Abstract:Overcharge has been one of the major factors to trigger thermal runaway (TR), but the influence of various triggering conditions on the TR behaviors in confined space has not been comprehensively discussed, preventing the further development of TR control technology. In this study, the large-format li-ion batteries with various capacities have been overcharged under different conditions in the self-made test container. Both the static and dynamic parameters have been obtained and analyzed. Results show that the variation of battery extrusion force was found to be the most sensitive parameter in the early stage of TR, which can be utilized as a reliable early warning signal. With the charging current increases from 1C to 6C, the distribution of heat and gas release at different TR stages have been completely changed, and the total gas generation enlarges over 4 times. In addition, both the heat generation and gas release experience rapid increase with the increasing capacity. The normalized gas release increased from 0.7 to 1.7 L/Ah, when battery capacity increases from 50 to 280 Ah. A new method has been proposed to compare the effect of various factors on the TR characteristics, which presents an underlying insight into the hazard mechanism. The standardized coefficient has been defined and the maximum pressure rise rate is found to be the most sensitive parameter to the test conditions, which reaches a maximum of 25.6. The gas generation experiences significant variation leading to the various explosion hazard risks, which may cause a huge problem during fire and explosion suppression.
