Abstract:Polymersemiconductors composed of a carbon-based pi conjugatedbackbone have been studied for several decades as active layers ofmultifarious organic electronic devices. They combine the advantagesof the electrical conductivity of metals and semiconductors and themechanical behavior of plastics, which are going to become one ofthe futures of modulable electronic materials. The performance ofconjugated materials depends both on their chemical structures andthe multilevel microstructures in solid states. Despite the greatefforts that have been made, they are still far from producing a clearpicture among intrinsic molecular structures, microstructures, anddevice performances. This review summarizes the development of polymersemiconductors in recent decades from the aspects of material designand the related synthetic strategies, multilevel microstructures,processing technologies, and functional applications. The multilevelmicrostructures of polymer semiconductors are especially emphasized,which plays a decisive role in determining the device performance.The discussion shows the panorama of polymer semiconductors researchand sets up a bridge across chemical structures, microstructures,and finally devices performances. Finally, this review discusses thegrand challenges and future opportunities for the research and developmentof polymer semiconductors.
Molecular Design of Multifunctional Integrated Polymer Semiconductors with Intrinsic Stretchability, High Mobility, and Intense Luminescence

Abstract:Multifunctional semiconductors integrating unique optical, electrical, mechanical, and chemical characteristics are critical to advanced and emerging manufacturing technologies. However, due to the trade‐off challenges in the design principles, fabrication difficulty, defects in existing materials, etc., realizing multiple functions through multistage manufacturing is quite taxing. Here, an effective molecular design strategy was established to prepare a class of multifunctional integrated polymer semiconductors. The pyridal[1,2,3]triazole‐thiophene co‐structured tetrapolymers with full‐backbone coplanarity and considerable inter/intramolecular noncovalent interactions facilitate short‐range order and excellent (re)organization capability of polymer chains, providing stress‐dissipation sites in the film state. The regioregular multicomponent conjugated backbones contribute to dense packing, excellent crystallinity, high crack onset strain over 100%, efficient carrier transport with mobilities of more than 1 cm2 V−1 s−1, and controllable near‐infrared luminescence. Furthermore, a homologous blending strategy was proposed to further enhance the color‐tunable luminescent properties of polymers while effectively retaining mechanical and electrical properties. The blended system exhibits excellent field‐effect mobility (μ) and quantum yield (Φ), reaching a record Φ · μ of 0.43 cm2 V−1 s−1. Overall, the proposed strategy facilitates a rational design of regioregular semicrystalline intrinsically stretchable polymers with high mobility and color‐tunable intense luminescence, providing unique possibilities for the development of multifunctional integrated semiconductors in organic optoelectronics. Abstract:Polymeric semiconductors have demonstrated great potential in the mass production of low‐cost, lightweight, flexible, and stretchable electronic devices, making them very attractive for commercial applications. Over the past three decades, remarkable progress has been made in donor–acceptor (D–A) polymer‐based field‐effect transistors, with their charge‐carrier mobility exceeding 10 cm2 V−1 s−1. Numerous molecular designs of D–A polymers have emerged and evolved along with progress in understanding the charge transport physics behind their high mobility. In this review, the current understanding of charge transport in polymeric semiconductors is covered along with significant features observed in high‐mobility D–A polymers, with a particular focus on polymeric microstructures. Subsequently, emerging molecular designs with further prospective improvements in charge‐carrier mobility are described. Moreover, the current issues and outlook for future generations of polymeric semiconductors are discussed.

Abstract:Conjugated polymers and molecular semiconductors are emerging as a viable semiconductor technology in industries such as displays, electronics, renewable energy, sensing and healthcare. A key enabling factor has been significant scientific progress in improving their charge transport properties and carrier mobilities, which has been made possible by a better understanding of the molecular structure–property relationships and the underpinning charge transport physics. Here we aim to present a coherent review of how we understand charge transport in these high-mobility van der Waals bonded semiconductors. Specific questions of interest include estimates for intrinsic limits to the carrier mobilities that might ultimately be achievable; a discussion of the coupling between charge and structural dynamics; the importance of molecular conformations and mesoscale structural features; how the transport physics of conjugated polymers and small molecule semiconductors are related; and how the incorporation of counterions in doped films—as used, for example, in bioelectronics and thermoelectric devices—affects the electronic structure and charge transport properties.

Abstract:Microelectronic circuits/arrays produced via high-speed printing instead of traditional photolithographic processes offer an appealing approach to creating the long-sought after, low-cost, large-area flexible electronics. Foremost among critical enablers to propel this paradigm shift in manufacturing is a stable, solution-processable, high-performance semiconductor for printing functionally capable thin-film transistors — fundamental building blocks of microelectronics. We report herein the processing and optimisation of solution-processable polymer semiconductors for thin-film transistors, demonstrating very high field-effect mobility, high on/off ratio and excellent shelf-life and operating stabilities under ambient conditions. Exceptionally high-gain inverters and functional ring oscillator devices on flexible substrates have been demonstrated. This optimised polymer semiconductor represents a significant progress in semiconductor development, dispelling prevalent skepticism surrounding practical usability of organic semiconductors for high-performance microelectronic devices, opening up application opportunities hitherto functionally or economically inaccessible with silicon technologies and providing an excellent structural framework for fundamental studies of charge transport in organic systems.
Toward Efficient Charge Transport of Polymer-Based Organic Field-Effect Transistors: Molecular Design, Processing, and Functional Utilization

Abstract:Polymer-based organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) have attracted great attention owing to their significantly improved performance and the recently emerged prospects for broad applications. The charge carrier mobility of polymer-based OFETs has been improved from 10(-5) to more than 10 cm(2) s(-1) over the past three decades. With the carrier mobility dose to or higher than that of amorphous silicon, the application fields of polymer-based OFETs have been extended from sensing to logic or drive circuits. During OFET operation, the charge carriers are successively injected in and then transferred across the semiconducting channel under an external electric field. The behavior of the charge carriers is determined by both charge injection and charge transport. Well-matched frontier molecular orbital (FMO) energy levels and optimized hierarchical structures of semiconducting polymers are essential for the realization of high-performance polymer-based OFETs. In this Account, we mainly demonstrate our recent progress in molecular design strategies and fabrication processing methods for high-performance semiconducting polymers. Moreover, we provide some examples of integrated applications of polymer-based OFETs. The convenient FMO energy level modulation and excellent molecular designability of donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers facilitate studies on their performance enhancement in OFETs. Proper molecular design of the D-A polymer backbone and side chain can significantly contribute to charge injection enhancement, transport pathway establishment, and trap reduction, thereby resulting in efficient charge transport. Moreover, special fabrication processes of OFET devices can further enhance the charge transport by optimizing the hierarchical structures of semiconducting polymers, thereby enhancing their carrier mobility and stability. By employing high-performance semiconducting polymers as the semiconducting channel of OFETs, various applications can be implemented. These applications range from small-scale logic signal processing and periodic signal generation to complex visual perception systems, indicating broad application prospects in human life. The works on performance improvement and functional utilization of the semiconducting polymers in OFETs might provide insights for molecular design strategies and applications for future plastic electronics.
A design strategy for high mobility stretchable polymer semiconductors

Abstract:Abstract As a key component in stretchable electronics, semiconducting polymers have been widely studied. However, it remains challenging to achieve stretchable semiconducting polymers with high mobility and mechanical reversibility against repeated mechanical stress. Here, we report a simple and universal strategy to realize intrinsically stretchable semiconducting polymers with controlled multi-scale ordering to address this challenge. Specifically, incorporating two types of randomly distributed co-monomer units reduces overall crystallinity and longer-range orders while maintaining short-range ordered aggregates. The resulting polymers maintain high mobility while having much improved stretchability and mechanical reversibility compared with the regular polymer structure with only one type of co-monomer units. Interestingly, the crystalline microstructures are mostly retained even under strain, which may contribute to the improved robustness of our stretchable semiconductors. The proposed molecular design concept is observed to improve the mechanical properties of various p- and n-type conjugated polymers, thus showing the general applicability of our approach. Finally, fully stretchable transistors fabricated with our newly designed stretchable semiconductors exhibit the highest and most stable mobility retention capability under repeated strains of 1,000 cycles. Our general molecular engineering strategy offers a rapid way to develop high mobility stretchable semiconducting polymers.

Recent Progress in Design of Conductive Polymers to Improve the Thermoelectric Performance

Abstract:Organic semiconductors, especially polymer semiconductors, have attracted extensive attention as organic thermoelectric materials due to their capabilities for flexibility, low-cost fabrication, solution processability and low thermal conductivity. However, it is challenging to obtain high-performance organic thermoelectric materials because of the low intrinsic carrier concentration of organic semiconductors. The main method to control the carrier concentration of polymers is the chemical doping process by charge transfer between polymer and dopant. Therefore, the deep understanding of doping mechanisms from the point view of chemical structure has been highly desired to overcome the bottlenecks in polymeric thermoelectrics. In this contribution, we will briefly review the recently emerging progress for discovering the structure–property relationship of organic thermoelectric materials with high performance. Highlights include some achievements about doping strategies to effectively modulate the carrier concentration, the design rules of building blocks and side chains to enhance charge transport and improve the doping efficiency. Finally, we will give our viewpoints on the challenges and opportunities in the field of polymer thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:The emergence of flexible electronics with broad application prospects has put forward new requirements for organic semiconductors, i.e., not only the electrical properties but also the mechanical properties. Among the strategies to achieve synergy between mechanical and electrical properties, near-amorphous polymers are competitive candidates due to their advantages of intrinsic flexibility, high mobility, and high reproducibility. Near-amorphous polymers with excellent performance are continuing to attract attention, and recently, some significant progress has been achieved in this field. In this perspective, we summarize these excellent advances on near-amorphous polymers from the point of view of their molecular design principles, their resulting charge transport and mechanical properties, and their potential applications in flexible electronic devices. Finally, we give a brief discussion on the challenges and opportunities of near-amorphous materials in flexible electronics from the perspectives of semiconductor layer materials themselves, devices, and multifunctional integration.

Isoindigo‐Based Polymers with Small Effective Masses for High‐Mobility Ambipolar Field‐Effect Transistors

Abstract:So far, most of the reported high‐mobility conjugated polymers are p‐type semiconductors. By contrast, the advances in high‐mobility ambipolar polymers fall greatly behind those of p‐type counterparts. Instead of unipolar p‐type and n‐type materials, ambipolar polymers, especially balanced ambipolar polymers, are potentially serviceable for easy‐fabrication and low‐cost complementary metal‐oxide‐semiconductor circuits. Therefore, it is a critical issue to develop high‐mobility ambipolar polymers. Here, three isoindigo‐based polymers, PIID‐2FBT, P1FIID‐2FBT, and P2FIID‐2FBT are developed for high‐performance ambipolar organic field‐effect transistors. After the incorporation of fluorine atoms, the polymers exhibit enhanced coplanarity, lower energy levels, higher crystallinity, and thus increased µe. P2FIID‐2FBT exhibits n‐type dominant performance with a µe of 9.70 cm2 V−1 s−1. Moreover, P1FIID‐2FBT exhibits a highly balanced µh and µe of 6.41 and 6.76 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively, which are among the highest values for balanced ambipolar polymers. Moreover, a concept “effective mass” is introduced to further study the reasons for the high performance of the polymers. All the polymers have small effective masses, indicating good intramolecular charge transport. The results demonstrate that high‐mobility ambipolar semiconductors can be obtained by designing polymers with fine‐tuned energy levels, small effective masses, and high crystallinity.
High mobility diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based organic semiconductor materials for organic thin film transistors and photovoltaics

Abstract:In recent years, the electron-accepting diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) moiety has been receiving considerable attention for constructing donor–acceptor (D–A) type organic semiconductors for a variety of applications, particularly for organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Through association of the DPP unit with appropriate electron donating building blocks, the resulting D–A molecules interact strongly in the solid state through intermolecular D–A and π–π interactions, leading to highly ordered structures at the molecular and microscopic levels. The closely packed molecules and crystalline domains are beneficial for intermolecular and interdomain (or intergranular) charge transport. Furthermore, the energy levels can be readily adjusted, affording p-type, n-type, or ambipolar organic semiconductors with highly efficient charge transport properties in OTFTs. In the past few years, a number of DPP-based small molecular and polymeric semiconductors have been reported to show mobility close to or greater than 1 cm2 V−1 s−1. DPP-based polymer semiconductors have achieved record high mobility values for p-type (hole mobility: 10.5 cm2 V−1 s−1), n-type (electron mobility: 3 cm2 V−1 s−1), and ambipolar (hole/electron mobilities: 1.18/1.86 cm2 V−1 s−1) OTFTs among the known polymer semiconductors. Many DPP-based organic semiconductors have favourable energy levels and band gaps along with high hole mobility, which enable them as promising donor materials for OPVs. Power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of up to 6.05% were achieved for OPVs using DPP-based polymers, demonstrating their potential usefulness for the organic solar cell technology. This article provides an overview of the recent exciting progress made in DPP-containing polymers and small molecules that have shown high charge carrier mobility, around 0.1 cm2 V−1 s−1 or greater. It focuses on the structural design, optoelectronic properties, molecular organization, morphology, as well as performances in OTFTs and OPVs of these high mobility DPP-based materials.

Abstract:Organic semiconductors with high-spin ground states are fascinating because they could enable fundamental understanding on the spin-related phenomenon in light element and provide opportunities for organic magnetic and quantum materials. Although high-spin ground states have been observed in some quinoidal type small molecules or doped organic semiconductors, semiconducting polymers with high-spin at their neutral ground state are rarely reported. Here we report three high-mobility semiconducting polymers with different spin ground states. We show that polymer building blocks with small singlet-triplet energy gap (Delta ES-T) could enable small Delta ES-T gap and increase the diradical character in copolymers. We demonstrate that the electronic structure, spin density, and solid-state interchain interactions in the high-spin polymers are crucial for their ground states. Polymers with a triplet ground state (S = 1) could exhibit doublet (S = 1/2) behavior due to different spin distributions and solid-state interchain spin-spin interactions. Besides, these polymers showed outstanding charge transport properties with high hole/electron mobilities and can be both n- and p-doped with superior conductivities. Our results demonstrate a rational approach to obtain high-mobility semiconducting polymers with different spin ground states. Semiconducting polymers with high-spin at their neutral ground state are rarely reported. Here the authors synthesize three semiconducting polymers with different spin ground states and high hole/electron mobility, by appropriate choice of the building blocks' singlet-triplet energy gap, spin distributions and solid-state interchain interactions.

Abstract:Organic electronics has made great progress in the past decades, which is inseparable from the innovative development of organic electronic devices and the diversity of organic semiconductor materials. It is worth mentioning that both of these great advances are inextricably linked to the development of organic high‐performance semiconductor materials, especially the representative n‐type organic small‐molecule semiconductor materials with high electron mobilities. The n‐type organic small molecules have the advantages of simple synthesis process, strong intermolecular stacking, tunable molecular structure and easy to functionalized structures. Furthermore, the n‐type semiconductor is a remarkable and important component for constructing complementary logic circuits and p‐n heterojunction structures. Therefore, n‐type organic semiconductors play an extremely important role in the field of organic electronic materials and are the basis for the industrialization of organic electronic functional devices. This review focuses on the modification strategies of organic small molecules with high electron mobility at molecular level, and discusses in detail the applications of n‐type small‐molecule semiconductor materials with high mobility in organic field−effect transistors (OFETs), organic light‐emitting transistors, organic photodetectors, and gas sensors. Abstract:In recent years, the charge carrier mobility study of organic semiconductors has seen significant progress and surpassed that of amorphous silicon thanks to the development of various molecular engineering, solution processing, and external alignment methods. These advances have allowed the implementation of organic semiconductors for fabricating high-performance organic electronic devices. In particular, diketopyrrolopyrrole-based small-molecular and polymeric organic semiconductors have garnered considerable research interest due to their ambipolar charge-carrier properties. In this article, we focus on conducting a comprehensive review of previous studies that are dedicated to the external alignment, thermal annealing, and molecular engineering of diketopyrrolopyrrole molecular structures and side-chain structures in order to achieve oriented crystal orientation, optimized thin-film morphology, and enhanced charge carrier transport. By discussing these benchmark studies, this work aims to provide general insights into optimizing other high-mobility, solution-processed organic semiconductors and sheds lights on realizing the acceleration of organic electronic device applications.

Abstract:In recent years, noncovalently assembled monolayers of conjugated, semiconducting polymers with thickness less than 5 nm have attracted increasing attention because of their determining role in charge carrier transport in field-effect transistors and their multifunctionality in other electronic devices. This article reviews recent advances in various promising and cutting-edge polymer monolayers for high-performance field-effect transistors with the main focuses on: (I) solution processing techniques for long-range ordering; (II) the importance of polymer aggregation in solution; (III) the effect of polymer packing orientation; (IV) engineering of the interface between the polymer monolayer with electrodes and dielectrics; (V) investigating the mechanism of charge carrier transport. By summarizing the field-effect mobilities of the different classes of conjugated semiconducting polymer monolayers, further understanding of correlation between monolayer structure and device property will be revealed. Furthermore, we also highlight the recent progress of other electronic applications of polymer monolayers such as integrated circuits, chemical sensors, and light-emitting diodes. Finally, we propose future research opportunities and remaining challenges in this exciting research field.

Abstract:All-polymer solar cells (all-PSCs) and all-polymer photodetectors (all-PPDs) are promising for application in flexible electronics, but their performance is greatly limited by the lack of polymer acceptors and the difficulties in morphology control. Herein, we report the use of a high-mobility n-type polymer semiconductor, PNDI-DTBT, for fabricating high-performance all-PSCs and all-PPDs. By pairing PNDI-DTBT with a matched polymer donor, a prominent power conversion efficiency of 8.5% was obtained in all-PSCs, demonstrating the great potential of high-mobility n-type polymers with a conventional donor–acceptor skeleton for photovoltaic application. Moreover, all-PPDs with a low dark current density of 1.32 × 10–8 A cm–2 at −0.1 V bias and a high specific detectivity of 4.77 × 1012 Jones were achieved, which belong to the best results of organic photodetectors. Morphology investigations revealed that the formation of a bicontinuous interpenetrating network with optimal phase separation scale, high domain purity, and preferential vertical composition distribution in the bulk-heterojunction active layer contribute to the remarkable device performance. Recent Advances on π-Conjugated Polymers as Active Elements in High Performance Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Abstract:As high-performance organic semiconductors, {\pi}-conjugated polymers have attracted much attention due to their charming advantages including low-cost, solution processability, mechanical flexibility, and tunable optoelectronic properties. During the past several decades, the great advances have been made in polymers-based OFETs with p-type, n-type or even ambipolar characterics. Through chemical modification and alignment optimization, lots of conjugated polymers exhibited superior mobilities, and some mobilities are even larger than 10 cm2 V-1 s-1 in OFETs, which makes them very promising for the applications in organic electronic devices. This review describes the recent progress of the high performance polymers used in OFETs from the aspects of molecular design and assembly strategy. Furthermore, the current challenges and outlook in the design and development of conjugated polymers are also mentioned.

Abstract:Stretchable polymer semiconductors have advanced rapidly in the past decade as materials required to realize conformable and soft skin-like electronics become available. Through rational molecular-level design, stretchable polymer semiconductor films are now able to retain their electrical functionalities even when subjected to repeated mechanical deformations. Furthermore, their charge-carrier mobilities are on par with the best flexible polymer semiconductors, with some even exceeding that of amorphous silicon. The key advancements are molecular-design concepts that allow multiple strain energy-dissipation mechanisms, while maintaining efficient charge-transport pathways over multiple length scales. In this perspective article, we review recent approaches to confer stretchability to polymer semiconductors while maintaining high charge carrier mobilities, with emphasis on the control of both polymer-chain dynamics and thin-film morphology. Additionally, we present molecular design considerations toward intrinsically elastic semiconductors that are needed for reliable device operation under reversible and repeated deformation. A general approach involving inducing polymer semiconductor nanoconfinement allows for incorporation of several other desired functionalities, such as biodegradability, self-healing, and photopatternability, while enhancing the charge transport. Lastly, we point out future directions, including advancing the fundamental understanding of morphology evolution and its correlation with the change of charge transport under strain, and needs for strain-resilient polymer semiconductors with high mobility retention.
