Abstract:Recently, the author determined the higher-order differential operator having the Jacobi-Sobolev polynomials as its eigenfunctions for certain eigenvalues. These polynomials form an orthogonal system with respect to an inner product equipped with the Jacobi measure on the interval [−1,1] with parameters α∈N0,β>−1 and two point masses N , S >0 at the right end point of the interval involving functions and their first derivatives. The first purpose of the present paper is to reveal how the Jacobi-Sobolev equation reduces to the differential equation satisfied by the Laguerre-Sobolev polynomials on the positive half line via a confluent limiting process as β→∞ . Secondly, we explicitly establish the differential equation for the symmetric Gegenbauer-Sobolev polynomials by employing a quadratic transformation of the argument. Each of the three differential operators involved is of order 4α+10 and symmetric with respect to the corresponding Sobolev inner product.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to reveal and establish the relationships among Jacobi - Sobolev, Laguerre - Sobolev and Gegenbauer - Sobolev differential equations. Specifically, the author solves this problem through the following two aspects: 1. **Limit process from Jacobi - Sobolev to Laguerre - Sobolev**: - The author transforms Jacobi - Sobolev polynomials into Laguerre - Sobolev polynomials through a limit process (when the parameter \(\beta\) tends to infinity). This step shows how to derive the Laguerre - Sobolev differential equation from the Jacobi - Sobolev differential equation. - Specifically, the author proves how each part in the Jacobi - Sobolev differential equation converges to the corresponding part in the Laguerre - Sobolev differential equation when \(\beta \to \infty\). 2. **New representation of Gegenbauer - Sobolev differential equation**: - The author uses the method of quadratic transformation to establish the relationship between Jacobi - Sobolev polynomials and Gegenbauer - Sobolev polynomials. In particular, for Gegenbauer - Sobolev polynomials of even order, the author represents them as a special form of Jacobi - Sobolev polynomials by choosing specific parameters. - Based on this, the author derives a new representation of the Gegenbauer - Sobolev differential equation and verifies its correctness. ### Key formulas - **Jacobi - Sobolev differential equation**: \[ L_{\alpha, \beta, N, S}^x y_n(x)=\lambda_{\alpha, \beta, N, S}^n y_n(x), \quad - 1\leq x\leq1 \] where \[ L_{\alpha, \beta, N, S}^x-\lambda_{\alpha, \beta, N, S}^n=\left\{L_{\alpha, \beta}^x-\lambda_{\alpha, \beta}^n\right\}+N\left\{T_{\alpha, \beta}^x-\tau_{\alpha, \beta}^n\right\}+S\left\{U_{\alpha, \beta}^x-\phi_{\alpha, \beta}^n\right\}+NS(\alpha + \beta + 2)\left\{V_{\alpha, \beta}^x-\chi_{\alpha, \beta}^n\right\} \] - **Laguerre - Sobolev differential equation**: \[ L_{\alpha, N, S}^x y_n(x)+\lambda_{\alpha, N, S}^n y_n(x) = 0, \quad 0\leq x<\infty \] where \[ L_{\alpha, N, S}^x+\lambda_{\alpha, N, S}^n=\left\{L_{\alpha}^x+\lambda_{\alpha}^n\right\}+N\left\{T_{\alpha}^x+\tau_{\alpha}^n\right\}+S\left\{U_{\alpha}^x+\phi_{\alpha}^n\right\}+NS\left\{V_{\alpha}^x+\chi_{\alpha} \]
