Abstract:The coupling of piezoelectric and semiconducting properties gives rise to the effect of piezotronics, which regulates charge carrier transport through the modulation of energy barriers at contact interfaces. With piezoelectric semiconductors as the building blocks, extensive progress has been made, covering the fundamental physics level, the individual device level as well as the integrated system level, effectively establishing a new field of study. By manipulating interfacial processes incorporating ionic charges, free electrons/holes, photons and chemicals, novel interdisciplinary effects have been studied and reported. This article aims at reviewing the milestone progress and offering perspectives of this new field of study in applications for multi-functional sensing systems, human-electronics interfacing, MEMS, energy harvesting and so on.
Mathematical Modelling of One-Dimensional Piezoelectric Transducers Based on Monoclinic Crystals

Abstract:A one-dimensional (computationally fast) model of a monoclinic-crystal ultrasonic transducer is presented. Based on elastic equations and piezoelectric constitutive relations relevant for a monoclinic crystal, a set of mathematical-modelling equations is derived. Special emphasis is given to the problem where a 6mm PZT-2 material is excited electrically along a general direction in the X-Z crystal-axis plane. We determine the electrical impedance as a function of frequency. Resonance conditions are discussed including dependencies with the PZT-2 layer thickness. Results are also presented for the angular dependence of the PZT-2/water interface pressure (where angle refers to the excitation direction in the X-Z plane) in the case where the PZT-2 layer is embedded into semi-infinite layers of air and water on either side. Finally, the PZT-2/water interface pressure signal for a transducer is computed subject to an eight-period sinusoidal current burst with driving frequency at 1 MHz. The present model is suitable for optimization of the dynamic transducer response as a function of excitation-direction angle and other physical parameters.

Abstract:Piezoelectric transducers are widely used for generating acoustic energy, and choosing the right radiating element is crucial for efficient energy conversion. In recent decades, numerous studies have been conducted to characterize ceramics based on their elastic, dielectric, and electromechanical properties, which have improved our understanding of their vibrational behavior and aided in the manufacturing of piezoelectric transducers for ultrasonic applications. However, most of these studies have focused on the characterization of ceramics and transducers using electrical impedance to obtain resonance and anti-resonance frequencies. Few studies have explored other important quantities such as acoustic sensitivity using the direct comparison method. In this work, we present a comprehensive study that covers the design, manufacturing, and experimental validation of a small-sized, easy-to-assemble piezoelectric acoustic sensor for low-frequency applications, using a soft ceramic PIC255 from PI Ceramic with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 5 mm. We present two methods, analytical and numerical, for sensor design, followed by experimental validation, allowing for a direct comparison of measurements with simulated results. This work provides a useful evaluation and characterization tool for future applications of ultrasonic measurement systems.

Abstract:Piezoelectricity is the ability of certain crystalline materials to develop an electric charge proportional to a mechanical stress, which is called the direct piezoelectric effect discovered by Curie bothers in 1880. Soon it was realized that materials showing this phenomenon must also show the converse piezoelectric effect: a geometric strain/deformation proportional to an applied voltage. Typical crystals (e.g., quartz, tourmaline and Rochelle salt) exhibit the piezoelectric effect. Since its discovery the piezoelectricity effect has found many useful applications, such as the production and detection of sound, generation of high voltages and frequency, microbalances, and ultra fine focusing of optical assemblies. It is also the basis of a number of scientific instrumental techniques with atomic resolution such as the scanning probe microscopy, and everyday uses such as acting as the ignition source for cigarette lighters and push-start propane barbecues. However, the traditional piezoelectric single crystals suffer from the disadvantages such as weak piezoelectric effect, low mechanical strength, sensitivity to moisture, and very narrow operated temperature range. Compared to the traditional single crystals, electrically poled polycrystalline ferroelectric ceramics, such as barium titanate (BaTiO3) and lead zirconium titanate (PZT), offer the advantages of large and stable piezoelectric effects, high strength and ease of fabrication in general, especially into complex shapes and large area pieces. Nowadays, they become the dominant piezoelectric materials in the fields of piezoelectric applications such as actuators, sensors, and transducers in intelligent systems and smart structures, dominating the world market today. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is giving a review of the state of art in polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramic materials, which covers the processing, properties, characterization, and applications of piezoelectric ceramic materials; whereas single crystals, polymeric piezoelectric materials and organic/inorganic piezoelectric composites are outside the scope of this review. This chapter is organized in the following way. In the first part, the history and processing of piezoelectric ceramic materials are briefly introduced, and then the general characteristics of piezoelectric ceramic materials are described with an emphasis on the piezoelectric parameters, compositions and properties, and piezoelectric constitutive relationships. Characterization methods for piezoelectric properties and ferroelectric domain structures of piezoelectric ceramic materials are addressed in the third part. Finally, various applications of piezoelectric ceramic materials in ultrasonic actuators, sensors, transducers, and active vibration controlling, are described, and the personal perspectives towards future trends of piezoelectric ceramic materials are also presented.

Abstract:Resonance technique for determining the physical properties of piezoelectric material can be difficult ro implement for some low symmetry systems. Inconstancy may be introduced because several samples are needed and the degree of poling depends on sample geometry. The ultrasonic method on the other hand, allows the determination of a complete set of elastic, piezoelectric, dielectric constants for materials of certain symmetries. However, some of these independent constants can not be directly measured from the phase velocities of pure modes, they need to be derived by solving a complicated coupled Christoffel equation, some relatively large errors may be introduced into these derivations. We found that if an additional length-longitudinal vibrator is used to assist the measurements, the computation would be greatly simplified and the final results became more accurate. As an example, the elastic, piezoelectric, dielectric constants and electromechanical coupling factors have been determined for a PZT-SH piezoelectric ceramic by using the combined method. This method can also be extended to piezoelectric crystals with symmetry point group of 4mm and 3mm.
A Review of Ceramic, Polymer and Composite Piezoelectric Materials

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials have been studied for nearly a century now. Initially employed in sonar technology, piezoelectric materials now have a vast set of applications including energy harvesting, sensing and actuation, and have found their way into our everyday lives. Piezoelectric material properties are being further enhanced to improve their performance and be used in novel applications. This review provides an overview of piezoelectric materials, and offers a material science and fabrication perspective on progress towards the development of practical piezoelectric energy harvesters and sensors. Piezoelectric materials have been divided into the three following classes for this review: ceramics, polymers and composites. The prominent materials under each class are examined and compared, with a focus on their linear piezoelectric response in the d33 mode. The three classes of piezoelectric materials are also compared qualitatively for a range of metrics, and the applications that each material class are best suited for is discussed. Novel piezoelectric materials such as ferroelectrets and nanogenerator devices are also reviewed here. It is shown that ceramic piezoelectric materials have strong piezoelectric properties but are stiff and brittle, whereas polymer piezoelectric materials are flexible and lightweight but do not exhibit very good piezoelectric performance. Composite materials are concluded to possess the advantages of both ceramic and polymer materials, with room to tailor-fit properties by modifying the structure and composition.

Abstract:Piezoelectric transducers have numerous applications in a wide range of sensing and actuation applications. Such a variety has resulted in continuous research into the design and development of these transducers, including but not limited to their geometry, material and configuration. Among these, cylindrical-shaped piezoelectric PZT transducers with superior features are suitable for various sensor or actuator applications. However, despite their strong potential, they have not been thoroughly investigated and fully established. The aim of this paper is to shed light on various cylindrical piezoelectric PZT transducers, their applications and design configurations. Based on the latest literature, different design configurations such as stepped-thickness cylindrical transducers and their potential application areas will be elaborated on to propose future research trends for introducing new configurations that meet the requirements for biomedical applications, the food industry, as well as other industrial fields.

Abstract:It has been over 111 years (1880–1991) since the discovery of piezoelectric phenomena by the Curie brothers. Over the years, sophisticated piezoelectricity theories have been proposed and refined. Novel piezoelectric devices were invented and applied to a variety of engineering applications (Tzou, 1990; Mason, 1981; Sessler, 1981; Dokmeci, 1983). In the recent development of active smart structures and systems, active piezoelectric and elastic/piezoelectric structures (elastic materials integrated with piezoelectric sensors/actuators and control electronics) are very promising in both static and dynamic applications, e.g., aerospace/aircraft structures, robot manipulators, vibration controls and isolations, high-precision devices, micro-sensors/actuators, micro-mechanical systems, micro-actuation and control, etc (Tzou & Fukuda, 1991). This has driven a renewed and widely spread interest in piezoelectricity related researches.

Abstract:Abstract Piezothermoelastic characteristics of distributed piezoelectric structural systems are investigated. A new piezothermoelastic finite element formulation for modeling static and dynamic responses of piezoelectric laminated continua subjected to combined thermal, electric, and mechanical excitations is proposed. A “thin” eight-node solid element with three internal degrees of freedom is formulated. Thermal influence to the distributed sensor/actuator systems is investigated. Vibration suppression of a piezoelectric laminated structure subjected to thermal excitations is studied and a correction method demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper reviews the current trends and historical development of piezoelectric sensors and sensor materials technology. It begins with a discussion of the bases of piezo- and ferroelectric activity, followed by an overview of the most commonly used piezoelectric ceramic: lead zirconate titanate (PZT). A discussion of the properties and applications of piezoelectric crystals and additional piezoelectric ceramics is followed by a description of several sensor configurations prepared from bulk ceramics. An extensive review and comparison of piezoelectric ceramic—polymer composite sensors based on the connectivity of the constituent phases is also presented. We conclude our discussion of sensor configurations with recent examples of piezoelectric ceramic—metal composite sensors, and expected future developments in the area of piezoelectric sensors.

Abstract:Piezoelectric actuators are a class of actuators that precisely transfer input electric energy into displacement, force, or movement outputs efficiently via inverse piezoelectric effect-based electromechanical coupling. Various types of piezoelectric actuators have sprung up and gained widespread use in various applications in terms of compelling attributes, such as high precision, flexibility of stoke, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and structural scalability. This paper systematically reviews the piezoelectric materials, operating principles, representative schemes, characteristics, and potential applications of each mainstream type of piezoelectric actuator. Herein, we intend to provide a more scientific and nuanced perspective to classify piezoelectric actuators into direct and indirect categories with several subcategories. In addition, this review outlines the pros and cons and the future development trends for all kinds of piezoelectric actuators by exploring the relations and mechanisms behind them. The rich content and detailed comparison can help build an in-depth and holistic understanding of piezoelectric actuators and pave the way for future research and the selection of practical applications.

Abstract:<p>In order to further understand the characteristics of PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal materials, the piezoelectric constant d<sub>33</sub>, impedance and frequency characteristics of PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal elements under different pressures are studied in this paper, and the performances of PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal elements are compared with PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic elements. The non prestressed PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal sandwich dipole transducer is studied and compared with PZT-4 piezoelectric ceramic sandwich dipole transducer of the same size. The matching layer broadband PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal circular composite rod transducer is studied. The stress distribution of the transducer under 10 N pressure is calculated, and the problem of local crack of the piezoelectric single crystal element is solved from the structural design. The results show that the PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal material has obvious advantages in low frequency performance, acoustoelectric and electroacoustic conversion efficiency, and can improve the emission and reception performance of acoustic transducer at the same time. The maximum transmitting voltage response and receiving sensitivity of the non prestressed sandwich dipole transducer can reach 144 dB and −166 dB respectively. Compared with piezoelectric ceramic transducer, the resonance frequency is reduced by about 3 kHz, and the transmitting and receiving performance are improved by 3 dB and 6 dB respectively. The matching layer broadband PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal circular composite rod transducer has a transmitting voltage response of more than 136 dB, fluctuation of less than 5 dB, receiving sensitivity of more than −176 dB and fluctuation of less than 6 dB in the frequency range from 20 kHz to 40 kHz. The research results of this paper have important reference value and guiding significance for the popularization of PMN-PT piezoelectric single crystal material and its application in acoustic transducer.</p>

Abstract:Piezoelectronics, as an efficient approach for energy conversion and sensing, have a far-reaching influence on energy harvesting, precise instruments, sensing, health monitoring and so on. A majority of the previous works on piezoelectronics concentrated on the materials that are applied at close to room temperatures. However, there is inadequate research on the materials for high-temperature piezoelectric applications, yet they also have important applications in the critical equipment of aeroengines and nuclear reactors in harsh and high-temperature conditions. In this review, we briefly introduce fundamental knowledge about the piezoelectric effect, and emphatically elucidate high-temperature piezoelectrics, involving: the typical piezoelectric materials operated in high temperatures, and the applications, limiting factors, prospects and challenges of piezoelectricity at high temperatures.

Abstract:Research activities on lead-free piezoelectric materials have been ongoing for over 20 years. Generally, the applicability of the main material families is less universal than that of lead-based compositions such as lead zirconate titanate, but in some cases, the corresponding applications have already been identified. Due to the extensive research, it is now possible to manufacture demonstrators and prototypes for different applications and the authors propose in this article to take stock of these advances. For this, we have chosen to first recall briefly the main new material systems using a simplistic "soft" and "hard" classification for approaching the various resonant transducer applications. Medical imaging applications that represent one of the most important fields are presented in a second step together with other low-power transducers. Then, a variety of applications are merged under the heading of high-power transducers. In addition, we mention two points that are important to consider when manufacturing at a larger scale. For the design of transducers, complete datasets must be available, especially if modeling tools are used. Finally, the commercialization of these lead-free materials imposes essential secondary requirements in terms of availability, reproducibility, sample size, and so on.
Numerical Characterization of Piezoceramics Using Resonance Curves

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials characterization is a challenging problem involving physical concepts, electrical and mechanical measurements and numerical optimization techniques. Piezoelectric ceramics such as Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) belong to the 6 mm symmetry class, which requires five elastic, three piezoelectric and two dielectric constants to fully represent the material properties. If losses are considered, the material properties can be represented by complex numbers. In this case, 20 independent material constants are required to obtain the full model. Several numerical methods have been used to adjust the theoretical models to the experimental results. The continuous improvement of the computer processing ability has allowed the use of a specific numerical method, the Finite Element Method (FEM), to iteratively solve the problem of finding the piezoelectric constants. This review presents the recent advances in the numerical characterization of 6 mm piezoelectric materials from experimental electrical impedance curves. The basic strategy consists in measuring the electrical impedance curve of a piezoelectric disk, and then combining the Finite Element Method with an iterative algorithm to find a set of material properties that minimizes the difference between the numerical impedance curve and the experimental one. Different methods to validate the results are also discussed. Examples of characterization of some common piezoelectric ceramics are presented to show the practical application of the described methods.

Abstract:A concise overview of ferroelectric ceramics and composites, which constitute the backbone of transducer applications such as actuators, sensors, energy harvesting, and storage are provided. For piezoelectric composites based on ferroelectric ceramics, underlying principles are developed using linear equations of state for piezoelectricity and the concepts of crystalline anisotropy, symmetry, composite connectivity, and form factor engineering as unifying themes. Emphasis is given to diphasic piezoelectric composites which have revolutionized transducer engineering in fields such as sonar and medical ultrasound imaging. It is shown that through judicious selection of a ferroelectric ceramic in conjunction with an inactive material such as a polymer or metal, effective material properties exceeding the performance of single-phase ceramics can be achieved. The application of traditional composite strategies and advances in fabrication technologies to rapidly growing fields such as dielectric energy storage and piezoelectric energy harvesting are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Piezoelectric materials have been analyzed for over 100 years, due to their ability to convert mechanical vibrations into electric charge or electric fields into a mechanical strain for sensor, energy harvesting, and actuator applications. A more recent development is the coupling of piezoelectricity and electro-chemistry, termed piezo-electro-chemistry, whereby the piezoelectrically induced electric charge or voltage under a mechanical stress can influence electro-chemical reactions. There is growing interest in such coupled systems, with a corresponding growth in the number of associated publications and patents. This review focuses on recent development of the piezo-electro-chemical coupling multiple systems based on various piezoelectric materials. It provides an overview of the basic characteristics of piezoelectric materials and comparison of operating conditions and their overall electro-chemical performance. The reported piezo-electro-chemical mechanisms are examined in detail. Comparisons are made between the ranges of material morphologies employed, and typical operating conditions are discussed. In addition, potential future directions and applications for the development of piezo-electro-chemical hybrid systems are described. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies on how piezoelectric materials and devices have been applied to control electro-chemical processes, with an aim to inspire and direct future efforts in this emerging research field.

Abstract:Piezoelectric single crystals, which have excellent piezoelectric properties, have extensively been employed for various sensors and actuators applications. In this paper, the state-of-art in piezoelectric single crystals for ultrasonic transducer applications is reviewed. Firstly, the basic principles and design considerations of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers will be addressed. Then, the popular piezoelectric single crystals used for ultrasonic transducer applications, including LiNbO3 (LN), PMN-PT and PIN-PMN-PT, will be introduced. After describing the preparation and performance of the single crystals, the recent development of both the single-element and array transducers fabricated using the single crystals will be presented. Finally, various biomedical applications including eye imaging, intravascular imaging, blood flow measurement, photoacoustic imaging, and microbeam applications of the single crystal transducers will be discussed.

Abstract:Recently, textured piezoelectric ceramics have become a hot topic in the field of piezoelectric materials. Due to their high cost-effectiveness, textured ceramics are expected to be the material of choice for the next generation of acoustic transducers. In this study, we investigated the coercive field (Ec), piezoelectric constant (d33), and dielectric constant (ε33) of textured PIN-PSN-PT ceramics under different torques, in response to the demand for the development of composite rod transducer technology for transmitting and receiving. Based on the obtained data, a wideband composite rod transducer was designed and fabricated using textured PIN-PSN-PT ceramics with high performance. Compared with conventional PZT piezoelectric ceramic transducers of the same size, the wideband composite rod transducer made with textured ceramics extends the frequency band to a lower frequency of 6.5 kHz, improves the emission performance by 2 dB, and enhances the reception performance by 2 dB. Compared with conventional PZT piezoelectric ceramics in the same frequency band, the acoustic performance is comparable, but there is a volume reduction of 59.23% and a weight reduction of 49.7%, solving the technical bottleneck of developing composite rod transducers that are miniaturized and lightweight. The research results of this study have important reference value for the engineering application of textured ceramic materials in acoustic transducers.

Abstract:Conveyances of physical energies (such as force, heat, and electricity) from one to another exist in nature and have initiated manifold useful applications. Piezothermic transduction refers to a change in the thermal conduction of a material when a mechanical strain is applied, which can be applied in high-performance pressure sensing and smart energy control. Here, we propose the piezothermic concept and investigate the mechanism of its transduction in three functional composite materials, that is, particle-reinforced composites, porous materials, and series-model materials. Theoretical models for analyzing relatedness effects of material properties (e.g., thermal conductivity, Young's modulus, and volume fraction) are established and validated by both finite element analyses and experimental measurements. The piezothermic transduction provides novel and promising strategies to implement high-performance mechanical sensing as well as energy control through optimizing composite materials. As a demonstration, a pressure sensor with a super high range-to-limit ratio of 50 000 that has a lower detection limit of 3.9 Pa and a large measurement range of 200 kPa is developed.
