Abstract:A deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared from choline chloride (ChCl), acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA); chitosan (CS) was used as a filler, and CS/P(AM- co -AA) composite hydrogels were prepared by frontal polymerization (FP). The hydrogels were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties, pH responsiveness and conductivity of the hydrogel were studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were significantly improved by adding CS, and the tensile strength and compressive strength were increased by 11.61 and 1.65 times respectively due to the increase in number of hydrogen bonds. At the same time, due to the presence of AA, the composite hydrogel has excellent pH response and super high swelling performance under alkaline conditions. The introduction of CS enhanced the conductivity of the hydrogel and gradually increased with the increase of CS content. The conductivity of the hydrogel with CS content of 10 wt% was nearly 160 times that of the hydrogel without CS. In this study, a more convenient and rapid method was proposed to prepare conductive composite hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and pH responsiveness.

Abstract:Choline chloride (ChCl) was used as the hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) as the hydrogen bond donor (HBD), and the three materials were mixed in a certain molar ratio to obtain deep eutectic solvent (DES). Subsequently, P(IA-co-AA-co-AM) composite hydrogels were prepared by adding itaconic acid (IA) to DES using the frontal polymerization (FP) method. The hydrogels were characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the influence patterns of IA content on the mechanical properties, swelling properties, and pH responsiveness of the composite hydrogels were investigated. The results showed that the composite hydrogel exhibited a homogeneous porous structure. The elongation at the break of the composite hydrogel gradually increased with the increase of IA content, and the elongation of the FP4 sample reached 167%. The addition of IA increased the number of hydrophilic groups, resulting in a 2.14-fold increase in the equilibrium swelling of the composite hydrogel in distilled water. P(IA-co-AA-co-AM) composite hydrogels exhibit different swelling patterns in acidic and alkaline environments, making them promising for acid–base indicators, biosensors, and other applications. In this study, a simpler and greener method was proposed to prepare P(IA-co-AA-co-AM) composite hydrogels with pH responsiveness.

Abstract:Hydrogels have received increasing interest owing to their excellent physicochemical properties and wide applications. In this paper, we report the rapid fabrication of new hydrogels possessing a super water swelling capacity and self-healing ability using a fast, energy-efficient, and convenient method of frontal polymerization (FP). Self-sustained copolymerization of acrylamide (AM), 3-[Dimethyl-[2-(2-methylprop-2-enoyloxy)ethyl]azaniumyl]propane-1-sulfonate (SBMA), and acrylic acid (AA) within 10 min via FP yielded highly transparent and stretchable poly(AM-co-SBMA-co-AA) hydrogels. Thermogravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the successful fabrication of poly(AM-co-SBMA-co-AA) hydrogels with a single copolymer composition without branched polymers. The effect of monomer ratio on FP features as well as porous morphology, swelling behavior, and self-healing performance of the hydrogels were systematically investigated, showing that the properties of the hydrogels could be tuned by adjusting the chemical composition. The resulting hydrogels were superabsorbent and sensitive to pH, exhibiting a high swelling ratio of up to 11,802% in water and 13,588% in an alkaline environment. The rheological data revealed a stable gel network. These hydrogels also had a favorable self-healing ability with a healing efficiency of up to 95%. This work contributes a simple and efficient method for the rapid preparation of superabsorbent and self-healing hydrogels.

Abstract:A composite hydrogel based on, by introducing, polyvinyl alcohol, sodium alginate, and hyaluronic acid was fabricated using CaCl2 as a cross-linker. The physical properties including morphology, water vapor transmission rate, and hydrophilicity were investigated. All PVA/SA/HA composite hydrogels with different compositions had highly homogeneous and interconnected pores, and the morphologies of the PVA/SA/HA hydrogels ranged from fibrous structure to irregular structure with increasing content of SA. The introduction of sodium alginate enhanced the hydrophilicity and water vapor transmission capacity of the hydrogel; however, the hydrophilicity of the composite hydrogels decreased with the increasing cross-linker content.

Abstract:Preparation of composite hydrogels by in situ polymerization (SP) using choline chloride (ChCl), acrylamide (AM), and urea (U) as raw materials for deep eutectic solvent (DES), with the introduction of PVA and PVDF as fillers into DES. Characterization of the composite hydrogels was conducted using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study analyzed the pressure sensitivity, piezoelectricity, swelling behavior, and mechanical properties of the composite hydrogels. The results indicate that due to the dipole–dipole interactions between PVA and PVDF, the composite hydrogels exhibit excellent pressure sensitivity and piezoelectric performance. When the ratio of PVA to PVDF is 1:1, the composite hydrogels exhibit optimal performance, with a 3.37-fold increase in pressure sensitivity and a 6.49-fold increase in piezoelectricity compared to other ratios. This research provides a method for preparing composite hydrogels with excellent piezoelectric performance and pressure sensitivity.

Abstract:Herein, we report an easy-to-prepare polyamic acid salt (PAAS) hydrogel with multiple functionalities including rapid self-healing, stimuli-responsive properties, and conductivity. This study describes a method for synthesizing PAAS hydrogel in aqueous solution. Phenylenediamine and 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride were used to prepare a hydrogel with a fully aromatic backbone via gradual polymerization. It is possible to use the gel in the field of biomaterials in the absence of organic solvents. The prepared hydrogel was characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and dynamic rheometry. The gel has good toughness and the storage modulus and tensile stress are, respectively, about 0.25 and 0.45 MPa. Our study may pave the way for the manufacture of PAAS hydrogel, which may promote the development of hydrogel materials.

Abstract:Based on the strategy of dynamic metal-coordination for improving mechanical properties, a further ideal was taken to prepare the tough hydrogels with the combination of self-crosslinking monomer and metal-coordination complexes. Herein, a series of hydrogels of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide) (P(AM-co-AAc-co-NMAM)) consisting the chemical crosslinking induced by NMAM units and the physical crosslinking derived from the coordination complexes of carboxyl-Fe3+ were prepared. The molecular structure was investigated with the ATR-FTIR, Raman and UV-vis spectra. These hydrogels with different water content of 57-93% possess good mechanical performances. The optimal hydrogels possess high tensile strength (8.56 MPa), prominent modulus (15.5 MPa), remarkable toughness (37.85 MJ/m(3)) and superb tearing energy (7062 J/m(2)). The tough hydrogels also display excellent self-recovery (95% toughness recovery within 50 min), pH-triggered healing, shape memory and plasticity abilities. These hydrogels having high strength and toughness may broaden range of potential applications in load-bearing soft actuators, flexible electronics, etc.

Abstract:Hydrogels are widely used in many fields but generally suffer from low mechanical strength and poor self-healing performance. Here, a novel and facile method was developed to prepare a semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogel with layered structure and improved properties based on sodium alginate (SA) and polyacrylamide (PAM). Systematic characterizations revealed a formation mechanism of layered structure via hydrogen bonds (HBs) promoted self-assembly of SA in the porous PAM matrix. Also, HBs can also display a key role in enhancing self-healing of the hydrogel, by which the hydrogel possesses a self-healing capacity of 99% with sprayed by a few of water. Moreover, the layered semi-IPN structure makes the tensile strength of PAMSA hydrogel reach 266 kPa. The fabricated PAMSA hydrogel with layered microstructure containing SA provides a protocol to broaden the functionality and variety of the hydrogels.

Abstract:The increased demand for improved strategies for wound healing has, in recent years, motivated the development of multifunctional hydrogels with favorable bio-compatibility and antibacterial properties. To this regard, the current study presented the design of a novel self-healing composite hydrogel that could perform as wound dressing for the promotion of wound healing. The composite hydrogels were composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), borax and chitosan functionalized with sialic acid (SA-CS) and curcumin loaded Pluronic F127 micelles. The hydrogels were formed through the boronic ester bond formation between PVA, SA-CS and borax under physiological conditions and demonstrated adjustable mechanical properties, gelation kinetics and antibacterial properties. When incubating with NIH3T3 cells, the hydrogels also demonstrated good biocompatibility. These aspects offer a promising foundation for their prospective applications in developing clinical materials for wound healing.

Abstract:Bentonite is a natural clay mineral with high cationic exchange properties and plays an important role in organic-inorganic composite hydrogels. We report an organic-inorganic cross-linked self-healing hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties by introducing acrylic acid-modified bentonite(AABT) into its cross-link network. AABT with unsaturated double bonds was co-polymerized with AA to construct the hybrid cross-link network of the hydrogel. Then, the carboxyl groups in the PAA chain reacted with CS to form a physically cross-linked network with a hydrogen bond structure. As confirmed by FTIR, XRD, XPS and SEM, the AABT participated in the formation of the hydrogel network, and the hydrogen bonds between PAA and CS chains were formed. Our AABT-PAA/CS hydrogels possessed tensile strength, compressive modulus and elongation at break as high as 0.96 MPa, 4.5 MPa and 1331%, respectively. Besides, our hydrogels also exhibited excellent self-healing properties, with recovered rate stress and strain of ∼76.6% and ∼77.7% after 4 h, respectively.

Abstract:Hydrogels with outstanding mechanical performance, self-healing capacity, and special functionality are highly desirable for their practical applications. However, it remains a great challenge to achieve such hydrogels by a facile approach. Here, we report a new type of nanocomposite hydrogels by in situ copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) using alumina nanoparticles (Al2O3 NPs) as the cross-linkers. The obtained hydrogels are highly stretchable and compressible, which could sustain large-scale extension (>1700%) or compression (90%) without failure, and exhibit tensile and compressive strength up to 660 kPa and 8.3 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, this kind of hydrogel also display considerable self-healing capacity due to their noncovalent cross-linking mechanism, as well as the hydrogen-bonding interactions between polymer chains. More interestingly, it was found that the resultant gels possess a long-lasting antifogging property that could prevent the formation of fog on the glass plate above hot water for at least 90 min. It is expected that this novel type of hydrogel would show great promise for various applications, including soft robots, artificial muscles, and optical devices.

Abstract:Deep eutectic solvent (DES) was prepared by using acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) as hydrogen bonding donors (HBD) and choline chloride (ChCl) as hydrogen bonding receptors (HBA). Nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) were dispersed in DES as fillers, and N-CNTs/P(AA- co -AM) composite hydrogels were prepared by FP. The interaction mode between the hydrogel and N-CNTs was characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mechanical properties, pH response and electrical conductivity of the composite hydrogels were studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties of the hydrogel were significantly enhanced with the increase of N-CNT content. The tensile strength and compressive strength of the FP4 composite hydrogel reached 5.42 MPa and 4.29 MPa, respectively. Due to the dissociation of carboxyl groups in AA in an alkaline environment the composite hydrogel showed excellent pH response performance. The conductivity of the hydrogel was also found to be improved with the content of N-CNTs. When the content of N-CNTs is 1.0 wt%, the conductivity of the hydrogel was 4.2 times higher than that of the hydrogel without N-CNTs, and connecting it to a circuit can make an LED lamp emit bright light. In this study, a simple and green method was proposed to prepare composite hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties and electrical conductivity by FP of DES in less than 5 min.

Abstract:The utility model relates to a self‐healing hydrogel with good mechanical properties, healing and plugging properties. The P(AM‐co‐AMPS)/SA DN hydrogel was synthesized through aqueous polymerization in this study. It formed a crosslinking network with hydrophobic associations between acrylamide (AM) and lauryl methacrylate (LMA), as well as an ionic bond network involving sodium alginate and Ca2+. To enhance its high‐temperature resistance, 2‐acrylamide‐2‐methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) was incorporated into the hydrogel formulation. The structure of the hydrogel was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. Results demonstrated that the hydrogel exhibited excellent temperature resistance and possessed a porous structure. Mechanical testing revealed a high tensile strength of 110 kPa, elongation at break of 995.31%, along with good fatigue resistance and self‐recovery performance during multiple cyclic stretching. Healing experiments indicated that the healing strength of the hydrogel was influenced by temperature variations. Furthermore, pressure plugging tests were conducted on steel models with crack widths of 0.5 and 1 mm, respectively; it was found that the 0.8%P(AM‐co‐AMPS)/SA DN hydrogel could withstand pressures up to 4.5 MPa at a temperature of 70°C. This novel hydrogel material exhibits remarkable mechanical properties along with certain self‐healing capabilities, making it suitable for leak control applications.

Abstract:Abstract First of all, we will provide a brief background on the self-healing hydrogels we produced which are suitable for the complex environment of nature. In this paper, disulfide bonds and acylhydrazone bonds can be combined in SH-WPU and hydrogen bonds existed in PAMAM. And the hydrogel can achieve self-healing under acid, alkaline, neutral or light environment.Self-healing for 1 h, 24 h and 48 h, the self-healing efficiency is 31.58%, 49.84% and 87.35% respectively. This effect achieved the desired effect and the repair effect is more obvious than previous research results. The hydrogels have potential applications in the field of biomaterials.

Abstract:A series of poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (PAA)/SiO2 hybrid hydrogels were prepared by in situ frontal polymerization. It was found that the increase in the concentration of SiO2 nanoparticles could lead to the increase in front velocity (Vf) and the highest front temperature (Tmax). This may be attributed to the fact that SiO2 nanoparticles could increase the liquid viscosity of reaction mixture. The obtained PAA/SiO2 hybrid hydrogels were characterized by SEM and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy spectrum and swelling measurements. The pH-sensitive swelling behaviors showed that the prepared PAA/SiO2 hybrid hydrogel had high pH sensitivity in different pH buffer solutions. Mechanical property test indicated that the PAA/SiO2 hybrid hydrogels exhibited a high compressive strength while remaining a high swelling radio (SR). The maximum of compressive strength and SR of the hybrid hydrogel may reach 42.6 kPa and 17.8, respectively, which was much higher than that of pure PAA hydrogel.

Abstract:In this work, poly(acrylic) acid‐chitosan @ tannic acid‐aluminum ion (PAA‐CS@TA‐Al3+) double‐network hydrogel was prepared via prefabrication, blending method, and Al3+ immersion method. The interaction between chitosan and tannic acid (CS@TA) was analyzed using Fourier transfer infrared spectra and UV‐Vis spectra. The UV‐Vis spectrum was also used to confirm the formation of ionic coordination in the gel. Then, the possible coordination modes were studied and analyzed. The microscopic pore structure and macroscopic strain behavior of the gel were analyzed using SEM and tensile testing, respectively, which verified that the tensile strength (≈32 KPa) and elongation at break (≈1700%) of the gel primarily resulted from its crosslinking structure. In addition, the gel also demonstrated a good self‐healing performance with recovery ≈92.2% at 60 minutes. Hence, the proposed novel self‐healing gel can provide inspiration for the preparation of future self‐healing gels.

Abstract:Endowing polymer hydrogels with good self-healing ability can autonomously repair damage with improved reliability. In this work, the benzaldehyde group was first grafted onto a biocompatible poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) molecular chain by esterification to obtain aldehyde-functionalized PVA (APVA), and the reversible imine bonds were further formed by reacting with amine groups on a quaternized chitosan (HTCC) chain. And thus, the self-healing APVA/HTCC hydrogel was fabricated with such imine bonds as crosslinking points together with hydrogen bonds. Many more imine bonds of hydrogels formed with increasing aldehyde content, resulting in increasing crosslinking density, decreasing average pore diameter and formation of a compact dynamic network, imparting certain mechanical strength and toughness with hydrogels. Furthermore, the healing efficiency of the hydrogel reached as high as 91.7% by self-healing without any external stimulus and its microstructure could be reconstructed after damage, exhibiting rapid recovery and dynamic features. Biocompatible self-healing PVA-based hydrogels exhibited great potential application in biomedical fields, like smart infill biomaterials, tissue engineering scaffolds, etc.

Abstract:Biodegradable hydrogels based on synthetic PHEA and IPN type composite hydrogel with chitosan, a natural carbohydrate polymer, were prepared by crosslinking using glutaraldehyde in aqueous mixture. Relatively strong hydrogels were formed in a shaped mold. Preparation of crosslinked gels and their swelling behavior depending on the composition, medium, and pH of solution are investigated. The porous morphology of scaffolds, obtained by freeze-drying method, was observed by scanning electron microscopy. Also preliminary results on hydrolytic degradation and cytotoxicity test of the hydrogel are included.

Fabrication of self-healing pectin/chitosan hybrid hydrogel via Diels-Alder reactions for drug delivery with high swelling property, pH-responsiveness, and cytocompatibility

Abstract:Self-healing hydrogels with pH-responsiveness could protect loaded drugs from being destroyed till it arrives to the target. The pectin-based hydrogel is a candidate due to the health benefit, anti-inflammation, antineoplastic activity, nontoxicity, and biospecific degradation, et al. However, the abundant existence of water-soluble branched heteropolysaccharide chains influenced its performance resulting in limitation of the potential. In the present study, we prepared a series of self-healing pectin/chitosan hydrogels via the Diels-Alder reaction. Moreover, pectin/chitosan composite hydrogel was prepared as a contrast. By comparison, it can be seen that the Diels-Alder reaction greatly improved the cross-linking density of hydrogels. The self-healing experiments showed excellent self-healing performance. In different swelling mediums, significant transformation in the swelling ratio was shown, indicating well-swelling property, pH- and thermo-responsiveness. The drug loading and release studies presented high loading efficiency and sustained release performance. The cytotoxicity assay that showed a high cell proliferation ratio manifested great cytocompatibility.

Composite Hydrogels with Rapid Self-Healing, Stretchable, Moldable and Antibacterial Properties Based on PVA/ε-Poly-L-lysine/Hyaluronic Acid

Abstract:Self-healing, stretchable, and moldable hydrogels have a great potential application in tissue engineering and soft robotics. Despite great success in reported hydrogels, it is still a great challenge to construct the moldable hydrogels with an ultrafast self-healing performance. Herein, the composite hydrogels (PBLH) with ultrafast self-healing, stretchable, and moldable properties were successfully constructed by poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), borate (B), ε-poly-L-lysine (EPL), and hyaluronic acid (HA) based on an efficient one-pot method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and rheological measurements confirmed the formation of a dynamic network among PVA, B, EPL, and HA through the cross-linking of dynamic borate bonds, electrostatic interaction, and hydrogen bonding. Having fabricated the dynamic network structure, the damage gap of the composite hydrogels can heal within 1 min, presenting an excellent self-healing ability. Simultaneously, the composite hydrogels can be molded into various shapes, and the length of the composite hydrogels can be stretched to 15 times their original length. In addition, the composite hydrogels exhibited an excellent antibacterial property against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Our results illustrated that the composite hydrogels not only retain the advantages of traditional hydrogels but also possess ultrafast self-healing, outstanding stretchable and antibacterial properties, presenting a prospective candidate for constructing biomedical materials.
