Abstract:Recently, Fulman developed some general connections between martingales and character ratios of a random representation of the symmetric group on transitions, and obtained a convergence rate in a central limit theorem. In this work we aim to establish the law of the iterated logarithm for character ratios. The technique is a well-known Skorokhod embedding theorem for martingales and strong approximation argument. Also, bounded martingale difference methods are used to obtain a large deviation for character ratios.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the Mill's ratio estimation problem and get two new inequalities. Compared to the well known results obtained by Gordon, they becomes tighter. Furthermore, we also discuss the inverse Q-function approximation problem and present some useful results on the inverse solution. Numerical results confirm the validness of our theoretical analysis. In addition, we also present a conjecture on the bounds of inverse solution on Q-function.

Abstract:Quadratic irrationals posses a periodic continued fraction expansion. Much less is known about cubic irrationals. We do not even know if the partial quotients are bounded, even though extensive computations suggest they might follow Kuzmin's probability law. Results are given for sequences of partial quotients of positive irrational numbers $\xi$ and $m \over \xi$ with $m$ a natural number. A big partial quotient in one sequence finds a connection in the other.

Abstract:Conrey, Farmer and Zirnbauer introduced a recipe to find asymptotic formulas for the sum of ratios of products of shifted L-functions. These ratios conjectures are very powerful and can be used to determine many statistics of L-functions, including moments or statistics about the distribution of zeros. We consider the family of real Dirichlet characters, and use multiple Dirichlet series to prove the ratios conjectures with one shift in the numerator and denominator in some range of the shifts. This range can be improved by extending the family to include non-primitive characters. All of the results are conditional under the Generalized Riemann hypothesis. This extended range is good enough to enable us to compute an asymptotic formula for the sum of shifted logarithmic derivatives near the critical line. As an application, we compute the one-level density for test functions whose Fourier transform is supported in ( − 2 , 2 ) \left (-2,2\right ) , including lower-order terms.

Abstract:Let $\lfloor x\rfloor$ denote the integer part of $x$. In 1947, Mills constructed a real number $\xi$ greater than $1$ such that $\lfloor \xi^{3^k} \rfloor$ is always a prime number for every positive integer $k$. We define Mills' constant as the smallest real number $\xi$ satisfying this property. In this article, we determine that Mills' constant is irrational. Moreover, we also obtain partial results on the transcendency of the constant.

Log-concavity in Combinatorics

Abstract:We survey some of the mechanisms used to prove that naturally defined sequences in combinatorics are log-concave. Among these mechanisms are Alexandrov's inequality for mixed discriminants, the Alexandrov Fenchel inequality for mixed volumes, Lorentzian polynomials, and the Hard Lefschetz theorem. We use these mechanisms to prove some new log-concavity and extremal results related to partially ordered sets and matroids. We present joint work with Ramon van Handel and Xinmeng Zeng to give a complete characterization for the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality. We extend Stanley's inequality for regular matroids to arbitrary matroids using the technology of Lorentzian polynomials. As a result, we provide a new proof of the weakest Mason conjecture. We also prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gorenstein ring associated to the basis generating polynomial of a matroid to satisfy Hodge-Riemann relations of degree one on the facets of the positive orthant.

Remarks on the conjectures of Capparelli, Meurman, Primc and Primc

Abstract:In a sequence of two papers, S. Capparelli, A. Meurman, A. Primc, M. Primc (CMPP) and then M. Primc put forth three remarkable sets of conjectures, stating that the generating functions of coloured integer partition in which the parts satisfy restrictions on the multiplicities admit simple infinite product forms. While CMPP related one set of conjectures to the principally specialised characters of standard modules for the affine Lie algebra $\mathrm{C}_n^{(1)}$, finding a Lie-algebraic interpretation for the remaining two sets remained an open problem. In this paper, we use the work of Griffin, Ono and the fourth author on Rogers-Ramanujan identities for affine Lie algebras to solve this problem, relating the remaining two sets of conjectures to non-standard specialisations of standard modules for $\mathrm{A}_{2n}^{(2)}$ and $\mathrm{D}_{n+1}^{(2)}$. We also use their work to formulate conjectures for the bivariate generating function of one-parameter families of CMPP partitions in terms of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. We make a detailed study of several further aspects of CMPP partitions, obtaining (i) functional equations for bivariate generating functions which generalise the well-known Rogers-Selberg equations, (ii) a partial level-rank duality in the $\mathrm{A}_{2n}^{(2)}$ case, and (iii) (conjectural) identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type for $\mathrm{D}_3^{(2)}$.

Abstract:We find an interesting relationship between the golden ratio, the Moebius function, the Euler totient function and the natural logarithm - central players in the theory of numbers. A number of identities involving the golden ratio and its reciprocal are proved, including an expression for the base of the natural logarithm. The theorem and corollaries highlight a connection between the golden ratio and the factorization of integers that is not obvious; and display a sort of inverse relationship between the Moebius function and Euler totient function.

Abstract:We consider q-binomial coefficients built from the q-rational and q-real numbers defined by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko in terms of continued fractions. We establish versions of both the q-Pascal identity and the q-binomial theorem in this setting. These results are then used to find more identities satisfied by the q-analogues of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko, including a Chu–Vandermonde identity and q-Gamma function identities.

Factorization Theorems for Relatively Prime Divisor Sums, GCD Sums and Generalized Ramanujan Sums

Abstract:We generalize recent matrix-based factorization theorems for Lambert series generating functions generating the coefficients $(f \ast 1)(n)$ for some arithmetic function $f$. Our new factorization theorems provide analogs to these established expansions generating sums of the form $\sum_{d: (d,n)=1} f(d)$ (type I) and the Anderson-Apostol sums $\sum_{d|(m,n)} f(d) g(n/d)$ (type II) for any arithmetic functions $f$ and $g$. Our treatment of the type II sums includes a matrix-based factorization method relating the partition function $p(n)$ to arbitrary arithmetic functions $f$. We also conclude the last section of the article by directly expanding new formulas for an arithmetic function $g$ by the type II sums using discrete Fourier transforms for functions over inputs of greatest common divisors and by suitably defined orthogonal polynomial sequences whose weight function we can define by a discrete time Fourier transform (DTFT) involving the partition function $p(n)$. There are numerous applications and special cases of our new results which we are able to cite as examples in the article. Particular cases of the applications we give in the article include new identities for Euler's totient function, the Ramanujan sums $c_q(n)$, the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, the Mertens function which is the summatory function of the Möbius function, and the cyclotomic polynomials.

Abstract:In this paper we settle long-standing questions regarding the combinatorial complexity of Minkowski sums of polytopes: We give a tight upper bound for the number of faces of a Minkowski sum, including a characterization of the case of equality. We similarly give a (tight) upper bound theorem for mixed faces of Minkowski sums. This has a wide range of applications and generalizes the classical the Upper Bound Theorems of McMullen and Stanley. Our main tool is relative Stanley--Reisner theory, a powerful generalization of the algebraic theory of simplicial complexes inaugurated by Hochster, Reisner, and Stanley. A key feature of our theory is the ability to accomodate topological as well as combinatorial restrictions. We illustrate this by providing several simplicial isoperimetric and reverse isoperimetric inequalities.

A Motivic Pairing and the Mellin Transform in Function Fields

Abstract:We define two pairings relating the A-motive with the dual A-motive of an abelian Anderson A-module. We show that specializations of these pairings give the exponential and logarithm functions of this Anderson A-module, and we use these specializations to give precise formulas for the coefficients of the exponential and logarithm functions. We then use this pairing to express the exponential and logarithm functions as evaluations of certain infinite products. As an application of these ideas, we prove an analogue of the Mellin tranform formula for the Riemann zeta function in the case of Carlitz zeta values. We also give an example showing how our results apply to Carlitz multiple zeta values.

Abstract:Making use of a telescoping approach, three types of sums of binomial quotients are examined. The summation terms of the two types of alternating sums have symmetry (i.e., their numerators and denominators are completely symmetric). We obtained a series of their explicit sums. Furthermore, by means of binomial relations, three recurrence relations of the sums are derived. In addition, series of double summation formulae involving binomial quotients are established.

On bounded ratios of minors of totally positive matrices

Abstract:We provide several examples of bounded Laurent monomials of minors of a totally positive matrix, which can not be factored into a product of so called primitive ratios, thus showing that the conjecture about factorization of bounded ratios stated in [3] by Fallat, Gekhtman, and Johnson does not hold. However, all found examples satisfy subtraction-free conjecture stated also in [3]. In addition, we show that the set of all bounded ratios form a polyhedral cone of dimension $\binom{2n}{n}-2n$.

We gained a new identity of product convolution of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. We wrote down generating functions of generalized Fibonacci and Lucas numbers products, their multisections, harmonic numbers and Catalan numbers.

Abstract:This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra's character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra's work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and Herb gave different formulas for these constants. In this article we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longer make sense), and give a direct proof that the two formulas agree. We actually prove a slightly more general identity that also implies the combinatorial identity underlying the discrete series character identities of Morel. We deduce this identity from a general abstract theorem giving a way to calculate the alternating sum of the values of a valuation on the chambers of a Coxeter arrangement. We also introduce a ring structure on the set of valuations on polyhedral cones in Euclidean space with values in a fixed ring. This gives a theoretical framework for the valuation appearing in Appendix A of the Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson paper. In Appendix B we extend the notion of $2$-structures (due to Herb) to pseudo-root systems.

Unimodality preservation by ratios of functional series and integral transforms

Abstract:Elementary, but very useful lemma due to Biernacki and Krzyż (1955) asserts that the ratio of two power series inherits monotonicity from that of the sequence of ratios of their corresponding coefficients. Over the last two decades it has been realized that, under some additional assumptions, similar claims hold for more general series ratios as well as for unimodality in place of monotonicity. This paper continues this line of research: we consider ratios of general functional series and integral transforms and furnish natural sufficient conditions for preservation of unimodality by such ratios. Numerous series and integral transforms appearing in applications satisfy our sufficient conditions, including Dirichlet, factorial and inverse factorial series, Laplace, Mellin and generalized Stieltjes transforms, among many others. Finally, we illustrate our general results by exhibiting certain statements on monotonicity patterns for ratios of some special functions. The key role in our considerations is played by the notion of sign regularity.
