Abstract:Aqueous proton batteries are regarded as one of the most promising energy technologies for next-generation grid storage due to the distinctive merits of H+ charge carriers with small ionic radius and light weight. Various materials have been explored for aqueous proton batteries; however, their full batteries show undesirable electrochemical performance with limited rate capability and cycling stability. Here we introduce a novel aqueous proton full battery that shows remarkable rate capability, cycling stability, and ultralow temperature performance, which is driven by a hydrogen gas anode and a Prussian blue analogue cathode in a concentrated phosphoric acid electrolyte. Its operation involves hydrogen evolution/oxidation redox reactions on the anode and H+ insertion/extraction reactions on the cathode, in parallel with the ideal transfer of only H+ between these two electrodes. The fabricated aqueous hydrogen gas-proton battery exhibits an unprecedented charge/discharge capability of up to 960 C with a superior power density of 36.5 kW kg-1, along with an ultralong cycle life of over 0.35 million cycles. Furthermore, this hydrogen gas-proton battery is able to work well at an ultralow temperature of -80 °C with 54% of its room-temperature capacity and under -60 °C with a stable cycle life of 1150 cycles. This work provides new opportunities to construct aqueous proton batteries with high performance in extreme conditions for large-scale energy storage.

Abstract:Aqueous electrolyte is one of the most favored choices for various high-energy, low-cost and safe batteries. However, the undesired parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially on high reactive metal anodes, brought by aqueous electrolyte remains the development bottleneck of these batteries. Here, introducing solvents to manipulate the hydrogen-bond network of aqueous electrolyte is proposed to suppress the parasitic HER. Significantly, theoretical simulations and experimental characterizations demonstrate that donor number of the solvents could serve as a descriptor to ability of confining the free water and reducing the water activity. The solvent additive with high donor number exhibits remarkable suppression on the self-discharge and hydrogen evolution of Al anodes in alkaline electrolyte, which endows a flow-based Al-air battery with an outstanding energy density of 3106.04 Wh kg(-1). The findings not only provide a guidance on the rational design of aqueous electrolyte but also expand the application of high-donor solvents.

Abstract:AbstractAqueous Zn‐organic batteries have received considerable attention owing to their green, low‐cost and high safe nature. Unfortunately, organic materials generally exhibit insulator nature (≈10−10 S cm−1), and most of reported promising performances of Zn‐organic batteries are achieved with a low mass‐loading (≈2 mg cm−2) in cathode, which is far away from practical application (10 mg cm−2). Herein, we demonstrate a semi‐conductive polymer poly(1,8‐diaminonaphthalene) (PDAN) cathode material for Zn batteries, which shows a moderate electronic conductivity (5.9×10−5 S cm−1). Theoretical calculations and in situ/ex situ analysis reveal that the cathode involves a bipolar‐type charge storage mechanism. Accordingly, the Zn//PDAN cell exhibits a promising capacity (140 mAh g−1at 0.1 A g−1) and a remarkable cycle stability (1000 cycles without capacity fading) at a high mass‐loading (10 mg cm−2). These encouraging results shed light on the design of advanced organic electrode.
A Fumed SiO2-Based Composite Hydrogel Polymer Electrolyte for Near-Neutral Zinc-Air Batteries

Abstract:Near -neutral zinc -air batteries show great promise for long -cycle applications in ambient air owing to their impressive deposition/stripping compatibility with zinc anodes and greater chemical stability towards CO2 in ambient air compared to batteries with traditional alkaline electrolytes. However, the inherent water volatilization of liquid electrolytes and the flexibility of electrolytes required for wearable devices severely limit the practical application of this system. In this study, a fumed SiO2- based composite hydrogel polymer electrolyte (SiO2-HPE) was prepared for application in near -neutral zinc -air batteries. The design of the SiO2-HPE was carried out considering the following three aspects. Firstly, it is widely acknowledged that the polyacrylamide polymer skeleton is beneficial to excellent ionic conductivity and the mechanical strength of the SiO2-HPE. Secondly, fumed SiO2 bearing multiple silicon hydroxyl groups is a suitable option as a water -retaining additive. Thirdly, the near -neutral liquid electrolyte (1 mol center dot kg-1 Zn(OTf)2) absorbed in the SiO2-HPE is stable towards CO2 in ambient air. In conclusion, these three aspects of the electrolyte design contribute to the practical application of the SiO2-HPE. Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the synthesized SiO2-HPE exhibited a high degree of polymerization, plentiful surface pores, and a uniform distribution of elements. According to the infrared and Raman spectra, the abundant hydroxyl groups located on the surface of the SiO2 particles enhanced water molecule binding by altering the hydrogen bond network within the SiO2-HPE. This conclusion was further confirmed by thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. After exposure to ambient air (30% relative humidity) for 96 h, the SiO2-HPE exhibited a water retention capacity of 49.52%, which is 6.23% and 1.73% higher than those for 1 mol center dot kg-1 Zn(OTf)2 and the HPE (hydrogel polymer electrolyte without SiO2). Moreover, owing to the dynamic recombination of the hydrogen bonds between the silicon hydroxyl groups and the gel skeleton, SiO2-HPE exhibited a higher mechanical strength and modulus than HPE under tensile and compressive conditions, respectively. This further rendered it an ideal electrolyte for flexible zinc -air batteries. The near -neutral zinc -air battery assembled with the SiO2-HPE exhibited a cycle life of up to 200 h under 30% relative humidity, far exceeding those of 1 mol center dot kg-1 Zn(OTf)2 and the HPE. Based on such remarkable performance, the flexible near -neutral zinc -air battery device assembled by the SiO2-HPE has shown a satisfactory performance under special conditions, such as bending and cutting, and can be used as a power supply for different electronic devices, making it a promising next -generation electrochemical energy storage device. Overall, this work provides new insight into the development of flexible zinc -air battery devices with long-term stability in ambient air.
Building Ultra-Stable and Low-Polarization Composite Zn Anode Interface via Hydrated Polyzwitterionic Electrolyte Construction

Abstract:Abstract Aqueous zinc metal batteries are noted for their cost-effectiveness, safety and environmental friendliness. However, the water-induced notorious issues such as continuous electrolyte decomposition and uneven Zn electrochemical deposition remarkably restrict the development of the long-life zinc metal batteries. In this study, zwitterionic sulfobetaine is introduced to copolymerize with acrylamide in zinc perchlorate (Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 ) solution. The designed gel framework with hydrophilic and charged groups can firmly anchor water molecules and construct ion migration channels to accelerate ion transport. The in situ generated hybrid interface, which is composed of the organic functionalized outer layer and inorganic Cl − containing inner layer, can synergically lower the mass transfer overpotential, reduce water-related side reactions and lead to uniform Zn deposition. Such a novel electrolyte configuration enables Zn//Zn cells with an ultra-long cycling life of over 3000 h and a low polarization potential (~ 0.03 V) and Zn//Cu cells with high Coulombic efficiency of 99.18% for 1000 cycles. Full cells matched with MnO 2 cathodes delivered laudable cycling stability and impressive shelving ability. Besides, the flexible quasi-solid-state batteries which are equipped with the anti-vandalism ability (such as cutting, hammering and soaking) can successfully power the LED simultaneously. Such a safe, processable and durable hydrogel promises significant application potential for long-life flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:The new-generation flexible aqueous zinc-ion batteries require enhanced mechanical properties and ionic conductivities at low temperature for practical applications. This fundamentally means that it is desired that the hydrogel electrolyte possesses antifreezing merits to resist flexibility loss and performance decrease at subzero temperatures. Herein, a highly flexible polysaccharide hydrogel is realized in situ and is regulated in zinc-ion batteries through the Hofmeister effect with low-concentration Zn(ClO4 )2 salts to satisfy the abovementioned requirements. The chaotropic ClO4 - anions, water, and polymer chains can form ternary and weak hydrogen bonding (HB), which enables the polymer chains to have improved mechanical properties, breaks the HB of water to remarkably decrease the electrolyte freezing point, and reduces the amounts of free water for effective side reactions and dendrite inhibition. Consequently, even at -30 °C, the Zn(ClO4 )2 in situ optimized hydrogel electrolyte features a high ionic conductivity of 7.8 mS cm-1 and excellent flexibility, which enables a Zn/polyaniline (PANI) battery with a reversible capacity of 70 mA h g-1 under 5 A g-1 for 2500 cycles, and renderd the flexible full battery with excellent cycling performances under different bending angles. This work provides a new pathway for designing high-performance antifreezing flexible batteries via the Hofmeister effect.

Abstract:Solid‐state batteries (SSBs) are an emerging technology for safe and high‐energy‐density electrochemical energy storage. Unfortunately, SSBs suffer from inadequate ionic conductivity and sluggish interfacial transport at subzero temperatures, which limit their widespread application. Herein, a flexible, stable, and highly conductive quasi‐solid polymer electrolyte (QSPE) for SSBs is developed that allows low‐temperature (LT) operation. The in situ polymerized QSPE has an integrated battery structure, outstanding ionic conductivity (e.g., 1.0 mS cm−1 at −30 °C), and exhibits favorable compatibility with Li metal (>2000 h in Li|QSPE|Li). Li|QSPE|LiFePO4 and high‐voltage Li|QSPE|LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 batteries demonstrate excellent long‐term stability (>2000 cycles at room temperature) and can operate effectively at LT (e.g., −30 °C). Furthermore, pouch cells with a LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (14.5 mg cm−2) cathode show flexibility, safety, and high capacity. The high performance of this QSPE is ascribed to its unique multilayer solvation structure that provides fast Li+ transport and excellent interfacial stability. Thus, the newly developed electrolyte chemistry enables practical high‐voltage, LT solid‐state Li batteries. This work reports the development of a flexible, stable, and highly conductive quasi‐solid polymer electrolyte (QSPE) for solid‐state Li metal batteries. The corresponding Li|QSPE|LiFePO4 and high‐voltage Li|QSPE|LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 batteries demonstrate excellent long‐term stability (>2000 cycles at room temperature) and can operate effectively at low temperature (e.g., −30 °C), respectively.

Abstract:Proton batteries are promising candidates for next-generation large-scale energy storage in extreme conditions due to the small ionic radius and efficient transport of protons. Hydrogen gas, with its low working potentials, fast kinetics, and stability, further enhances the performance of proton batteries but necessitates the development of novel electrolytes with low freezing points and reduced corrosion. This work introduces a localized water restriction strategy by incorporating a tertiary component with a high donor number, which forms strong bonds with water molecules. This approach restricts free water molecules and reduces the average hydrogen bond ratio and strength. As-prepared ternary eutectic electrolytes lowered the freezing point to −103 °C, significantly lower than the traditional binary electrolyte (9.5 m H3PO4, −93 °C). This electrolyte is highly compatible with the Cu0.79Co0.21[Fe(CN)6]0.64·4H2O (CoCuHCF) cathode, reducing material dissolution and current collector corrosion. The H2||CoCuHCF battery using this electrolyte demonstrated a high-power density of 23664.3 W kg−1, excellent performance at −80 °C, and stable cyclability over 1000 cycles (> 30 days) at −50 °C. These findings provide a framework for proton electrolytes, highlighting the potential of hydrogen batteries in challenging environments.

Abstract:Abstract Quasi-solid-state Zn-air batteries are usually limited to relatively low-rate ability (<10 mA cm −2 ), which is caused in part by sluggish oxygen electrocatalysis and unstable electrochemical interfaces. Here we present a high-rate and robust quasi-solid-state Zn-air battery enabled by atomically dispersed cobalt sites anchored on wrinkled nitrogen doped graphene as the air cathode and a polyacrylamide organohydrogel electrolyte with its hydrogen-bond network modified by the addition of dimethyl sulfoxide. This design enables a cycling current density of 100 mA cm −2 over 50 h at 25 °C. A low-temperature cycling stability of over 300 h (at 0.5 mA cm −2 ) with over 90% capacity retention at −60 °C and a broad temperature adaptability (−60 to 60 °C) are also demonstrated.

Abstract:Abstract Rechargeable aqueous batteries are an up-and-coming system for potential large-scale energy storage due to their high safety and low cost. However, the freeze of aqueous electrolyte limits the low-temperature operation of such batteries. Here, we report the breakage of original hydrogen-bond network in ZnCl 2 solution by modulating electrolyte structure, and thus suppressing the freeze of water and depressing the solid-liquid transition temperature of the aqueous electrolyte from 0 to –114 °C. This ZnCl 2 -based low-temperature electrolyte renders polyaniline||Zn batteries available to operate in an ultra-wide temperature range from –90 to +60 °C, which covers the earth surface temperature in record. Such polyaniline||Zn batteries are robust at –70 °C (84.9 mA h g −1 ) and stable during over 2000 cycles with ~100% capacity retention. This work significantly provides an effective strategy to propel low-temperature aqueous batteries via tuning the electrolyte structure and widens the application range of temperature adaptation of aqueous batteries.

Abstract:Flexible zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have been considered as one of the most outstanding energy storage devices for flexible and portable electronics because of their superior energy density and environmental friendliness. As the "blood" of flexible ZABs, electrolytes play a significant role in determining their performance, such as discharge working time, cycling property, and shelf life. Herein, a novel polymer electrolyte based on quaternary ammonium hydroxides is first applied in flexible zinc-air batteries. Tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) is innovatively used as the ionic conductor with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as the polymer host in the polymer electrolyte and exhibits a good water retention capability, resulting in not only a good shelf life but also a good working life of the flexible zinc-air batteries. The fabricated polymer electrolyte maintains its high ionic conductivity of 30 mS cm-1 even after 2 weeks. In addition, the as-assembled zinc-air batteries based on the TEAOH-PVA electrolyte exhibit excellent discharge performance and cycling life compared to those based on the commonly used KOH-PVA electrolyte, and no notable degradation is observed after 2 weeks. Furthermore, flexible TEAOH-PVA-based zinc-air batteries can power a light-emitting diode (LED) electronic watch, a mobile phone, and an LED screen, indicating the very large potential of the high-performance zinc-air batteries that are safe, cost-effective, and remarkably flexible.

Abstract:Zinc -organic batteries (ZOB) have garnered significant attention owing to their design flexibility and abundant raw materials. However, a notable drawback arises from the tendency of organic electrodes to dissolve in the electrolyte during cycling, resulting in diminished cycle stability and a shortened lifespan. Herein, we propose a noncovalent supramolecular self -assembly approach to address the challenge of organic electrode dissolution, namely the hydrogen -bonded organic polymer (HOP) is introduced as the cathode ensuring the electrolyte/ electrode stability in ZOB. The HOP comprises perylene anhydride units characterized by robust strong 7C -7C stacking and hydrogen bond connections. This configuration enables the reversible storage of Zn 2+ /H 3 O + through C - - O/C - O bond conversion, as validated by in -situ ATR-FTIR and ex -situ XPS analyses. Employing a 1 m Zn(OTF) 2 electrolyte, the Zn//HOP cell exhibited stable cycling at room temperature for 20,000 cycles with nearly 80 % capacity retention and operated at -5 degrees C for 300 cycles with 100 % capacity retention. Our findings explore the noncovalent supramolecular self -assembly strategy in producing organic electrodes resistant to dissolution.
A Flexible and Safe Aqueous Zinc–Air Battery with a Wide Operating Temperature Range from −20 to 70 °C

Abstract:Flexible solid-state rechargeable batteries have attracted extensive attention for their potential to accommodate the deep integration of humans and flexible electronics. To achieve a wide operating temperature range of −20 to 70 °C as well as good flexibility and safety, a novel flexible and rechargeable solid-state aqueous Zn–air battery was developed and is reported herein. This battery possessed temperature-resistance, long-term stability, excellent flexibility and mechanical properties, low interfacial resistance, and good safety. The Zn–air battery exhibited a power density of 11.8 mW cm–2, a specific capacity of 663.25 mA h g–1, and a gravimetric energy density of 769.37 W h kg–1 at 1 mA cm–2 and 25 °C. During operation at 0 and −20 °C, the maximum output power density retentions of the battery were 80.13% and 67.87%, respectively, compared with that at 25 °C. Furthermore, the battery could consistently power a timer under various conditions, including temperatures of −30 and 70 °C as well as exposure to the flame of an alcohol burner and being subjected to impacts, cutting, or bending. Notably, the battery was able to operate in these scenarios without developing smoke and blast phenomena, thus demonstrating that this battery has significant potential for future applications in safely wearable and flexible electronics that could be employed in harsh temperature environments. Abstract:Zinc-air batteries using gels as carriers for electrolyte absorption have attracted extensive attention due to their flexibility, deformability, and high specific capacity. However, traditional mono-polymer gel electrolytes display poor mechanical properties and low ionic conductivity at wide-window temperatures. Here, the enhanced gel polymer (PAM-F/G) modified by dual surfactants is present by way of pluronic F127 and layered graphene oxide introduced into the polyacrylamide (PAM) matrix. The gel electrolyte procured by absorbing 6 M KOH exhibits improved mechanical characteristics, temperature adaptability, and a satisfactory ionic conductivity (276 mS cm-1). The results demonstrate that a flexible zinc-air battery assembled by PAM-F/G electrolyte outputs a high power density (155 mW cm-2) and can even operate reliably (>40 h) at -20 °C. These findings are available for promoting the research and popularization of flexible zinc-air batteries with high performance.
Multifunctional Electrolyte Additive for High Power Lithium Metal Batteries at Ultra-Low Temperatures

Abstract:Ultra-low temperature lithium metal batteries face significant challenges, particularly sluggish ion transport and uncontrolled lithium dendrite formation, especially under high power. An ideal electrolyte requires high carrier ion concentration, low viscosity, rapid desolvation, and stable interfaces. However, harmonizing these attributes remains a formidable task. Here, we designed and synthesized a multifunctional additive, perfluoroalkylsulfonyl quaternary ammonium nitrate (PQA-NO3), which features both cationic (PQA+) and anionic (NO3-) components. PQA+ reacts in situ with lithium metal to form an inorganic-rich solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) that enhances Li+ transport through the SEI film. NO3- creates an anion-rich, solvent-poor solvation structure, improving oxidation stability at the cathode/electrolyte interface and reducing Li+-solvent interactions. This allows ether-based electrolytes to achieve high voltage tolerance, increased ionic conductivity, and lower desolvation energy barriers. The Li (40 µm)||NMC811 (3 mAh cm-2) cells with the developed electrolyte exhibited stable cycling at -60 ℃ and a 450 Wh kg-1 pouch cell retained 48.1% capacity at -85 ℃, achieving a remarkable energy density of 171.8 Wh kg-1. Additionally, the pouch cell demonstrated a high discharge rate of 3.0 C at -50 ℃, reaching a power density of 938.5 W kg-1, highlighting the electrolyte's potential for high-rate lithium metal batteries in extreme low-temperature environments.

Abstract:The growing demand for safer energy storage devices leads to wide research on solid-state lithium-ion batteries. However, as an important component in the solid-state battery, the solid-state electrolyte often encounters problems, especially the low conductivity at room temperature, inhibiting the development of solid-state batteries. Here, improved electrochemical performances of lithium-ion batteries are obtained by designing a composite gel polymer electrolyte with a sponge-like structure. The porous composite gel polymer electrolyte (PCGPE) is developed by a facile phase inversion process of poly(vinylidiene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO). The solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance test proves the continuous porous structure constructs fast Li-ion transport pathways on internal interfaces. As a result, the ionic conductivity of PCGPE is up to 5.45 × 10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature. Moreover, an initial capacity of 142.2 mAh g-1 and 82.6% capacity retention at 1 C after 350 cycles are successfully achieved in flexible LiFPO4//PCGPE//Li batteries.
