Abstract:Magnetoelastic resonators are gaining attention as an incredibly versatile and sensitive transduction platform for the detection of varied physical, chemical, and biological parameters. These sensors, based on the coupling effect between mechanical and magnetic properties of ME platforms, stand out in comparison to alternative technologies due to their low cost and wireless detection capability. Several parameters have been optimized over the years to improve their performance, such as their composition, surface functionalization, or shape geometry. In this review, the working principles, recent advances, and future perspectives of magnetoelastic resonance transducers are introduced, highlighting their potentials as a versatile platform for sensing applications. First, the fundamental principles governing the magnetoelastic resonators performance are introduced as well as the most common magnetoelastic materials and their main fabrication methods are described. Second, the versatility and technical feasibility of magnetoelastic resonators for biological, chemical, and physical sensing are highlighted and the most recent results and functionalization processes are summarized. Finally, the forefront advances to further improve the performance of magnetoelastic resonators for sensing applications have been identified.

Abstract:Magnetoelectric resonators have been studied for the detection of small amplitude and low frequency magnetic fields via the delta-E effect, mainly in fundamental bending or bulk resonance modes. Here, we present an experimental and theoretical investigation of magnetoelectric thin-film cantilevers that can be operated in bending modes (BMs) and torsion modes (TMs) as a magnetic field sensor. A magnetoelastic macrospin model is combined with an electromechanical finite element model and a general description of the delta-E effect of all stiffness tensor components Cij is derived. Simulations confirm quantitatively that the delta-E effect of the C66 component has the promising potential of significantly increasing the magnetic sensitivity and the maximum normalized frequency change Δfr. However, the electrical excitation of TMs remains challenging and is found to significantly diminish the gain in sensitivity. Experiments reveal the dependency of the sensitivity and Δfr of TMs on the mode number, which differs fundamentally from BMs and is well explained by our model. Because the contribution of C11 to the TMs increases with the mode number, the first-order TM yields the highest magnetic sensitivity. Overall, general insights are gained for the design of high-sensitivity delta-E effect sensors, as well as for frequency tunable devices based on the delta-E effect.

Abstract:Smart adaptive structures and structronic systems have been increasingly investigated and developed in the last two decades. Although smart structures made of piezoelectrics, shape-memory materials, electrostrictive materials, and electro-/magnetorheological fluids have been evaluated extensively, studies of magnetostrictive continua, especially generic mathematical model(s), are still relatively scarce. This study is to develop a generic mathematical model for adaptive and controllable magnetostrictive thin shells. Starting with fundamental constitutive magnetostrictive relations, both elastic and magnetostrictive stresses, forces, and moments of a generic double-curvature magnetostrictive shell continuum subject to small and moderate magnetic fields are defined. Dynamic magnetomechanical system equations and permissible boundary conditions are defined using Hamilton's principle, elasticity theory, Kirchhoff-Love thin shell theory and the Gibb's free energy function. Magnetomechanical behavior and dynamic characteristics of magnetostrictive shells are evaluated. Simplifications of magnetostrictive shell theory to other common geometries are demonstrated and magnetostrictive/dynamic coupling and actuation characteristics are discussed.

Abstract:Thick-film magnetoelastic sensors vibrate mechanically in response to a time varying magnetic excitation field. The mechanical vibrations of the magnetostrictive magnetoelastic material launch, in turn, a magnetic field by which the sensor can be monitored. Magnetic field telemetry enables contact-less, remote-query operation that has enabled many practical uses of the sensor platform. This paper builds upon a review paper we published in Sensors in 2002 (Grimes, C.A.; et al. Sensors 2002, 2, 294-313), presenting a comprehensive review on the theory, operating principles, instrumentation and key applications of magnetoelastic sensing technology.

Abstract:In the present work, the magneto-mechanical coupling in magneto-active elastomers is investigated from two different modeling perspectives: a micro-continuum and a particle–interaction approach. Since both strategies differ significantly in their basic assumptions and the resolution of the problem under investigation, they are introduced in a concise manner and their capabilities are illustrated by means of representative examples. To motivate the application of these strategies within a hybrid multiscale framework for magneto-active elastomers, their interchangeability is then examined in a systematic comparison of the model predictions with regard to the magneto-deformation of chain-like helical structures in an elastomer surrounding. The presented results show a remarkable agreement of both modeling approaches and help to provide an improved understanding of the interactions in magneto-active elastomers with chain-like microstructures.

Abstract:An expression for the description of the frequency-dependent magnetoelectric response in hybrid magnetostrictive-piezoelectric multiferroic composites is presented by using constitutive and motion equations. The calculations show that the values of the magnetoelectric voltage coefficient of the composites in the region of an electromechanical resonance sharply increase and exceed a low-frequency value by more than two orders of magnitude, which is in reasonable agreement with recent experimental data. The enhanced magnetoelectric response at the electromechanical resonance is dependent on the interface losses.

Abstract:The smart magneto-rheological visco-elastomer (MRVE) has a promising application to vibration control. Its dynamic characteristics are described by complex moduli which are applicable to linear dynamics. However, experimental results show remarkable nonlinear relations between force and deformation for certain large deformations, and the nonlinear dynamic modeling needs to be developed. The present study focuses on the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of MRVE. The MRVE was fabricated and specimens were tested to show nonlinear mechanical properties and dynamic behaviors. The nonlinear effect induced by applied magnetic fields was investigated. A phenomenological model for the dynamic behaviors of MRVE was proposed to describe the nonlinear elasticity, linear damping and hysteretic effect, and the corresponding equivalent linear model in the frequency domain was also given for small deformations. The proposed model is applicable to the dynamics and control analysis of composite structures with MRVE.

Abstract:We proposed a theoretical model describing frequency response of magnetoelectric (ME) voltage coefficients in long cylindrical piezoelectric-magnetostrictive composite structures. Using constitutive equations of the materials and equation of motion, an expression for the ME voltage coefficient is derived in terms of material parameters characterizing piezoelectric and magnetostrictive phases and as a function of applied ac magnetic field frequency. It is shown that there is a considerable enhancement in ME voltage coefficient in the region of electromechanical resonance. The resonance frequency equation is obtained as a function of material parameters and geometry sizes. The relationship between resonance frequency and resonance ME effect with geometry size under different boundary mechanical conditions is investigated in trilayered and bilayered cylindrical composites using the derived model. This theoretical work is of some significance for designing ME devices and understanding the resonance vibration mode in cylindrical ME composite structures.
Anhysteretic Magneto-Elastic Behaviour of Terfenol-D: Experiments, Multiscale Modelling and Analytical Formulas

Abstract:Giant magnetostrictive materials such as Terfenol-D and Galfenol are used to design actuators and sensors, converting magnetic input into a mechanical response, or conversely, mechanical input into a magnetic signal. Under standard operating conditions, these materials are subjected to stress. It is therefore important to be able to measure, understand and describe their magneto-mechanical behaviour under stress. In this paper, a comprehensive characterisation of the anhysteretic magneto-mechanical behaviour of Terfenol-D was performed. An energy-based multiscale approach was applied to model this behaviour. Finally, it was shown that the strain behaviour of Terfenol-D can be satisfactorily described using an analytical model derived from the full multiscale approach.
Magnetostriction in elastomers with mixtures of magnetically hard and soft microparticles: effects of non-linear magnetization and matrix rigidity

Abstract:In this contribution a magnetoactive elastomer (MAE) of mixed content, i.e., a polymer matrix filled with a mixture of magnetically soft and magnetically hard spherical particles, is considered. The object we focus at is an elementary unit of this composite, for which we take a set consisting of a permanent spherical micromagnet surrounded by an elastomer layer filled with magnetically soft microparticles. We present a comparative treatment of this unit from two essentially different viewpoints. The first one is a coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation model, which presents the composite as a bead-spring assembly and is able to deliver information of all the microstructural changes of the assembly. The second approach is entirely based on the continuum magnetomechanical description of the system, whose direct yield is the macroscopic field-induced response of the MAE to external field, as this model ignores all the microstructural details of the magnetization process. We find that, differing in certain details, both frameworks are coherent in predicting that a unit comprising magnetically soft and hard particles may display a non-trivial re-entrant (prolate/oblate/prolate) axial deformation under variation of the applied field strength. The flexibility of the proposed combination of the two complementary frameworks enables us to look deeper into the manifestation of the magnetic response: with respect to the magnetically soft particles, we compare the linear regime of magnetization to that with saturation, which we describe by the Fröhlich-Kennelly approximation; with respect to the polymer matrix, we analyze the dependence of the re-rentrant deformation on its rigidity.

Abstract:We analyze theoretically the field-induced microstructural deformations in a hybrid elastomer, that consists of a polymer matrix filled with a mixture of magnetically soft and magnetically hard spherical microparticles. These composites were introduced recently in order to obtain a material that allows the tuning of its properties by both, magnetically active and passive control. Our theoretical analysis puts forward two complementary models: a continuum magnetomechanical model and a bead-spring computer simulation model. We use both approaches to describe qualitatively the microstructural response of such elastomers to applied external fields, showing that the combination of magnetically soft and hard particles may lead to an unusual magnetostriction effect: either an elongation or a shrinking in the direction of the applied field depending on its magnitude. This behavior is observed for conditions (moderate particle densities, fields and deformations) under which the approximations of our models (linear response regime, negligible mutual magnetization between magnetically soft particles) are physically valid.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the behavior of field-dependent viscoelasticity for magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). A novel nonlinear constitutive model for magneto-viscoelastic behavior of MREs is proposed. The model considered here is thermodynamically motivated and based on the second law. An extended three-parameter standard linear solid model is proposed to describe the viscoelastic behavior of MREs, where the effect of particles on the elastomers at zero field is taken into account. Furthermore, the nonlinear magnetization and the local magnetic field within the ferromagnetic particle are incorporated to describe field-dependent constitutive behavior based on the dipole model. Then a set of analytical expressions of the constitutive law for MREs are obtained, and the parameters appearing in the model can be determined by those measurable experiments in mechanics and physics. The quantitative results demonstrate that this model can well capture the constitutive relation under both quasi-static and dynamic shear loading.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive review of magnetoelastic environmental sensor technology; topics include operating physics, sensor design, and illustrative applications. Magnetoelastic sensors are made of amorphous metallic glass ribbons or wires, with a characteristic resonant frequency inversely proportional to length. The remotely detected resonant frequency of a magnetoelastic sensor shifts in response to different physical parameters including stress, pressure, temperature, flow velocity, liquid viscosity, magnetic field, and mass loading. Coating the magnetoelastic sensor with a mass changing, chemically responsive layer enables realization of chemical sensors. Magnetoelastic sensors can be remotely interrogated by magnetic, acoustic, or optical means. The sensors can be characterized in the time domain, where the resonant frequency is determined through analysis of the sensor transient response, or in the frequency domain where the resonant frequency is determined from the frequency-amplitude spectrum of the sensor.

Abstract:A micromechanical analysis is offered for the prediction of the effective behavior and internal field distribution of multiphase magnetostrictive composites. The analysis is based on the homogenization technique for periodic composites. The nonlinear coupled constitutive relations of the monolithic magnetostrictive have been recently established at room and elevated temperatures and verified by comparisons with experimental results. Due to the nonlinearity of these constitutive equations, the micromechanical method is based on an incremental procedure which provides the instantaneous magneto-thermo-elastic concentrations tensors that relate the local field to the externally applied loading. In addition, the analysis provides the instantaneous effective tangent tensors as well as the macroscopic constitutive equations which govern the current global behavior of the magnetostrictive composite. The present analysis provides an efficient tool for analyzing magnetostrictive composites with continuous and arbitrary inclusion phases. Results present a parametric study of the effect of applied pre-stresses, elevated temperatures and magnetostrictive phase geometry and volume fraction on a magnetostrictive/epoxy composite response that is subjected to external magnetic field. The distributions of the induced magnetostrictions in the constituents are shown in various circumstances.

Abstract:This chapter discusses the physics of magnetoelasticity and magnetoelastic waves in thin films as well as their mathematical description. Magnetoelastic waves occur as a result of strong coupling between spin waves and elastic waves in magnetostrictive ferromagnetic media. In a first part, the basic behavior of spin waves is reviewed in both bulk ferromagnets as well as in thin films. Next, elastic waves are discussed with a focus on thin films. Then, the interactions between the elastic and magnetic domains are described and it is shown how this results in the formation of magnetoelastic waves. The description and the mathematical formalism of magnetoelastic waves in infinitesimally thin films is extended to magnetoelastic waves in thin films with finite thickness. The dispersion relations and eigenstates are derived and graphically visualised for such magnetoelastic waves. It is shown that the behavior strongly depends on the geometry of the system, especially on the polarization of the spin and elastic waves and the direction of the magnetization of the magnetostrictive ferromagnetic medium.

Abstract:Ferrogels and magnetoelastomers are composite materials obtained by embedding magnetic particles of mesoscopic size in a crosslinked polymeric matrix. They combine the reversible elastic deformability of polymeric materials with the high responsivity of ferrofluids to external magnetic fields. These materials stand out, for example, for large magnetostriction as well as significant increase of the elastic moduli in the presence of external magnetic fields. By means of X-ray micro-computed tomography, position and size of each magnetic particle can be measured with a high degree of accuracy. We here use data extracted from real magnetoelastic samples as input for coarse-grained dipole-spring modeling and calculations to investigate magnetostriction, stiffening, and changes in the normal modes spectrum. More precisely, we assign to each particle a dipole moment proportional to its volume and set a randomized network of springs between them that mimics the behavior of the polymeric elastic matrix. Extending our previously developed methods, we compute the resulting structural changes in the systems, their overall distortions, as well as the frequency-dependent elastic moduli when magnetic interactions are turned on. Particularly, with increasing magnetization, we observe the formation of chain-like aggregates, resulting in significant overall deformations. Interestingly, the static elastic moduli can first show a slight decrease with growing amplitude of the magnetic interactions, before a pronounced increase appears upon the chain formation. The change of the dynamic moduli with increasing magnetization depends on the frequency and can even show nonmonotonic behavior. Overall, we demonstrate how theory and experiments can complement each other to learn more about the dynamic behavior of this interesting class of materials.

Abstract:In this paper, the magnetostriction of a thin film ferromagnetic and elastic structure is investigated. The structure is composed of an elastic layer confined between two perfectly bonded thin ferromagnetic layers in a plane strain setting. The ferromagnetic layers are saturated insulators and their magnetization is assumed at every stage parallel to the relevant layer's axis (latent microstructure). The structure is studied within the theory of magneto-elastic interaction and focus is set on reducing the problem to a manageable one-dimensional form. This is accomplished employing the Euler—Bernoulli kinematics in conjunction with Maxwell equations. Once the model is stated, a system of coupled nonlinear integro-differential equations is obtained in the deformation components. Integral terms spring from the non-local character of the magnetic interaction. Some features of the solution are pointed out through an asymptotic analysis. The system is solved through the spectral method and a collocation technique, employing Gaussian quadrature at a second grid to assess the magnetic field and an iterative solver for nonlinear systems. Plots of the deformed configuration, of the internal action and of the layers's interaction are given. A parametric analysis brings out the role of some dimensionless quantities. Finally, solutions are compared with experimental results on Nickel magnetostriction.
