Abstract:Over the past two decades, a series of aqueous rechargeable metal-ion batteries (ARMBs) have been developed, aiming at improving safety, environmental friendliness and cost-efficiency in fields of consumer electronics, electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage. However, the notable gap between ARMBs and their organic counterparts in energy density directly hinders their practical applications, making it difficult to replace current widely-used organic lithium-ion batteries. Basically, this huge gap in energy density originates from cell voltage, as the narrow electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes substantially confines the choice of electrode materials. This review highlights various ARMBs with focuses on their voltage characteristics and strategies that can effectively raise battery voltage. It begins with the discussion on the fundamental factor that limits the voltage of ARMBs, i.e., electrochemical stability window of aqueous electrolytes, which decides the maximum-allowed potential difference between cathode and anode. The following section introduces various ARMB systems and compares their voltage characteristics in midpoint voltage and plateau voltage, in relation to respective electrode materials. Subsequently, various strategies paving the way to high-voltage ARMBs are summarized, with corresponding advancements highlighted. The final section presents potential directions for further improvements and future perspectives of this thriving field.

Abstract:Given the low cost, ease of fabrication, high safety, and environmental‐friendly characteristics, aqueous rechargeable batteries using mild aqueous solutions as electrolytes (pH is close to 7) and a monovalent/multivalent metal ion as charge carrier, are attracting extensive attention for energy storage. However, accompanied by advantages of mild aqueous electrolyte mentioned above, there are some challenges that stand in the way of the development of these aqueous rechargeable batteries, such as the narrow stable electrochemical window of water, instability of electrode materials, undesired side reactions, etc. In recent years, a massive effort is devoted to overcoming the drawbacks, and some encouraging works have arisen. In this review, the latest advances of electrolyte and electrode materials in aqueous batteries based on monovalent ion (Li + , Na + , K + ) and multivalent ion (Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Al 3+ ) are briefly reviewed.

Abstract:As an emerging technology for energy storage, aqueous rechargeable batteries possess several advantages including intrinsic safety, low cost, high power density, environmental friendliness, and ease of manufacture. Consequently, they hold significant application value and promising prospects in the field of large-scale energy storage, garnering extensive attention and experiencing rapid development in recent years. However, the limited voltage window poses a significant challenge for further advancements of the aqueous rechargeable batteries. Substantial progress has been made in achieving wide voltage windows (>2.0 V) and large operating voltages for aqueous rechargeable batteries. This mini-review paper presents an overview of the theoretical mechanisms governing stabilized voltage windows, providing essential guidelines for expanding the voltage range of aqueous rechargeable batteries. The strategies for constructing high-voltage aqueous rechargeable batteries are subsequently summarized and categorized into anode selection, cathode engineering, and electrolyte optimization strategies. By discussing their current research status along with associated challenges and potential solutions, we also suggest a few research directions for high-voltage aqueous rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable batteries are regarded as one of the ultimate solutions needed to solve the safety problems of conventional rechargeable batteries using organic electrolytes, but the challenge is to find suitable anode materials that will work well in the narrow electrochemical window of water with reasonable capacities. Aqueous Zn-based rechargeable batteries using Zn anode, a mild aqueous electrolyte, and Zn2+ or another monovalent/multivalent metal ion as charge carrier have been receiving extensive attention in recent years due to their low cost, high safety, environmental friendliness, and acceptable energy density. Although it is still a challenge to achieve high performance aqueous Zn-based rechargeable batteries with a long cycle life and a high energy density, considerable efforts have been devoted to overcoming the drawbacks associated with the Zn anode, electrolyte, and cathode materials. In this review, the recent advances on the aqueous Zn-based rechargeable batteries, including aqueous Zn ion batteries (AZIBs) and aqueous Zn hybrid batteries (AZHBs), are systematically reviewed. We first summarize and discuss the Zn anode behaviour and strategies to restrain the dendrite formation and improve the plating/stripping efficiency. Then, the cathode materials used in AZIBs and AZHBs are summarized in terms of their structures, electrochemical performance, and reaction mechanism, as well as the strategies used to improve their electrochemical performance. The electrolytes and their effects on the electrochemical performance of Zn anode and cathode materials are also discussed. Finally, the challenges for and perspectives on AZIBs and AZHBs are summarized to guide research directions in the future.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous metal-ion batteries (AMBs) have attracted extensive scientific and commercial interest due to their potential for cost-effective, highly safe, and scalable stationary energy storage. However, their limited output voltage, inadequate energy density, and poor reversibility of ambiguous electrode reactions in aqueous electrolytes strongly limit their practical viability. This review aims to elucidate the challenges of existing AMBs from the material design to whole device applications. We summarize the emerging electrochemistry, fundamental properties, and key issues in interfacial behaviors of various classes of prevailing AMBs, including aqueous alkali metal-ion batteries and multivalent-ion batteries, and present an appraisal of recent advances for addressing the performance deficiency. Specifically, the progress of zinc-ion batteries is highlighted to provide a ubiquitous guideline for their commercialization in the grid-scale energy storage. Finally, we figure out the dominating general challenges for achieving high-performance AMBs, laying out a perspective for future breakthroughs.

Abstract:The development of zinc batteries with advantages of high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness is energetic in recent years because of the increasing requirement on large-scale energy storage systems for integrating renewable energy in the power grid. However, there are still significant challenges in the way of commercialization of aqueous zinc batteries, such as parasitic reaction, zinc dendrite, and structure collapse and dissolution of cathode materials. This review summarizes the Zn2+ storage mechanism of cathode materials and the challenges in front of electrode materials and aqueous electrolyte. Meanwhile, corresponding solutions and points that should be paid attention for commercialization are discussed.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries are emerging power sources due to the merits of high safety, low cost, environmental friendliness, etc. However, several key issues such as narrow electrochemical stability window, dissolution of active materials, notorious dendrite growth and poor cycling lifespan hinder the practical application of aqueous batteries. Recently, 2D MXenes and their derivatives for aqueous batteries have exhibited substantial encouraging progress due to the special characters. The related researches have dramatically increased since 2019. However, comprehensive reviews on this topic are rare. Herein, the latest advances of MXenes and their derivatives for aqueous Zn-, Li-, Na-and dual-ion batteries are systematically reviewed, including cathode fabrication, anode design and electrolyte optimization, etc. This review aims to boost rational design strategies for practical application of aqueous batteries by combining the fundamental principle and research developments. Firstly, the fundamental background of aqueous rechargeable batteries is introduced and the superior merits for electrochemical energy storage of MXenes and their derivatives are summarized. Subsequently, the design strategies and internal mechanism of MXenes and their derivatives for aqueous batteries are comprehensively summarized and discussed. Finally, perspectives on the future design tactics of MXenes-based materials for aqueous batteries are proposed.

Abstract:Recent emerging rechargeable zinc-ion batteries have inherent benefits of intrinsic battery safety and high elemental abundance and reduce pollution toward an environmentally compatible energy storage system. However, the effort of promoting rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage applications is greatly plagued by the high activity of water molecules. The high activity of water molecules remains a threat to Zn-ion batteries, leading to premature failure of the Zn anode, cathode dissolution, and inferior low-temperature performance. Recently, a wide spectrum of effective strategies has been reported for reducing water’s activity to tackle the above challenges. In view of the shallow understanding of water molecule states and their interwoven associations with Zn-ion battery performance, it becomes urgent to highlight the significance of regulating water activity and summarize recent progress in aqueous Zn-ion batteries. This Perspective aims to provide a fundamental understanding for designing better Zn-ion batteries using aqueous solution chemistry.

Abstract:Aqueous rechargeable zinc-based batteries have sparked a lot of enthusiasm in the energy storage field recently due to their inherent safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Although remarkable progress has been made in the exploration of performance so far, there are still many challenges such as low working voltage and dissolution of electrode materials at the material and system level. Herein, the central tenet is to establish a systematic summary for the construction and mechanism of different aqueous zinc-based batteries. Details for three major zinc-based battery systems, including alkaline rechargeable Zn-based batteries (ARZBs), aqueous Zn ion batteries (AZIBs), and dual-ion hybrid Zn batteries (DHZBs) are given. First, the electrode materials and energy storage mechanism of the three types of zinc-based batteries are discussed to provide universal guidance for these batteries. Then, the electrode behavior of zinc anodes and strategies to deal with problems such as dendrite and passivation are recommended. Finally, some challenge-oriented solutions are provided to facilitate the next development of zinc-based batteries. Combining the characteristics of zinc-based batteries with good use of concepts and ideas from other disciplines will surely pave the way for its commercialization.

Abstract:With the low cost, excellent safety and high theoretical specific capacity, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered as a potential rival for lithium-ion batteries to promote the sustainable development of large-scale energy storage technologies. However, the notorious Zn dendrites and low Coulombic efficiency (CE) limit further development of AZIBs, due to the unstable electrochemical deposition/stripping behavior of Zn anode in aqueous zinc ion electrolytes. In this review, critical issues and advances are summarized in electrolyte engineering strategies. These strategies are focused on active water molecules during electrochemical process, including high-concentration electrolytes, ionic liquids, gel-polymer electrolytes and functional additives. With suppressed active water molecules, the solvation and de-solvation behavior of Zn2+ can be regulated, thereby modulating the electrochemical performance of Zn anode. Finally, the inherent problems of these strategies are discussed, and some promising directions are provided on electrolytes engineering for high performance Zn anode in AZIBs.

Abstract:In recent years, aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted more and more attention not only because they use earth-abundant metals but also due to their improved safety and high volumetric energy density. As one type of promising electrode material for AZIBs, manganese-based materials are receiving considerable attention owing to their high theoretical specific capacity, non-toxicity, and low cost. This mini review summarizes the recent advances on the application of manganese-based materials (manganese oxide, manganate, and their composites) in AZIBs. In addition, the methods to enhance their zinc-ion storage properties are summarized and discussed, such as morphology engineering, doping, as well as compositing with other materials. Ultimately, some personal prospects for future research of the manganese-based materials for AZIBs are also proposed.

Abstract:Aqueous ion batteries are receiving increasing attention as a means of achieving carbon neutrality due to their advantages in terms of low cost, safety, and environmental friendliness. Unlike aqueous multivalent metal cation batteries, monovalent metal cations in aqueous ion batteries have been favored by researchers for their lower reduction potentials, smaller hydration ion radii and hydration enthalpies, and faster ion migration rates. However, the research on aqueous monovalent cation batteries is still in the experimental exploration stage due to several limitations. The lower operating voltage and energy densities of aqueous monovalent cation batteries are mainly due to the narrow electrochemical stability window (ESW) of the electrolyte, limited compatible electrode materials, and unresolved challenges such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This paper aims to address the issues related to aqueous monovalent lithium/sodium ion batteries. A specific discussion will be provided on the electrode materials, the dissolution structure of the electrolyte, and the design strategy of the battery. Additionally, this paper will also present insights into the challenges faced during the research process and the prospects for the development of aqueous lithium/sodium ion batteries.

Abstract:With the rapid growth in energy consumption, renewable energy is a promising solution. However, renewable energy (e.g., wind, solar, and tidal) is discontinuous and irregular by nature, which poses new challenges to the new generation of large‐scale energy storage devices. Rechargeable batteries using aqueous electrolyte and multivalent ion charge are considered more suitable candidates compared to lithium‐ion and lead‐acid batteries, owing to their low cost, ease of manufacture, good safety, and environmentally benign characteristics. However, some substantial challenges hinder the development of aqueous rechargeable multivalent ion batteries (AMVIBs), including the narrow stable electrochemical window of water (≈1.23 V), sluggish ion diffusion kinetics, and stability issues of electrode materials. To address these challenges, a range of encouraging strategies has been developed in recent years, in the aspects of electrolyte optimization, material structure engineering and theoretical investigations. To inspire new research directions, this review focuses on the latest advances in cathode materials for aqueous batteries based on the multivalent ions (Zn2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Al3+), their common challenges, and promising strategies for improvement. In addition, further suggestions for development directions and a comparison of the different AMVIBs are covered.

Abstract:Although the lithium-ion battery using aqueous solution as electrolyte has low energy density, it may solve both the safety and large cost problems for lithium-ion batteries that use highly toxic and flammable organic solvents, and the poor cycling life associated with commercialized aqueous rechargeable batteries including lead-acid and nickel-metal hydride batteries, showing promising application in stationary power sources for smart grid. The present work reviews the latest advances in the exploration and development of battery systems and related materials. Also the main challenges in this field are briefly discussed and some constructive views and possible solutions are provided. On the other hand, present work also reviews the recent progress of the application of Li-metal anode, and analyzes its advantage, disadvantage and challenge.

Abstract:Aqueous batteries (ABs) have received increasing attention for large-scale energy storage owing to inherent safety, environmental friendliness, high ionic conductivity and low cost of the electrolytes. However, they display low discharge capacity and power density in low-temperature conditions, or even cannot operate normally, which severely limits their practical applications. Up to now, some strategies are reported to improve the low-temperature performance of ABs. In this review, we firstly clarify the intrinsic effect of low temperature environment on the battery from perspective of thermodynamics and kinetics. Then, the reported strategies for improving the low-temperature performance of ABs are summarized, including electrode materials design, electrolytes optimization, and modification of other components (e. g. binder, separator, and conductor). Finally, this review shares our perspectives on potential directions for further improving the low-temperature performance of ABs.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc‐based batteries (AZBs) have been recently considered as desirable energy storage devices for renewable energy storage because of their high theoretical capacity, low cost, and high safety. Despite the inspiring achievements in this field, the energy density of AZBs is still far below expectation, which directly hinders their practical application as next‐generation secondary cells. To address this issue, previously, reseach efforts have been mainly dedicated to the improvement of capacity by designing different kinds of high‐capacity electrode candidates, especially the cathode materials. In recent years, elevation of the output voltage for energy density improvement has gained more and more attention. The main limitation of the relatively low output voltage of AZBs lies in the narrow electrochemically stable window of aqueous electrolytes, which results in limited choice of cathode materials with high potential. Herein, by summarizing recently reported work in this field, the strategies applied to high‐voltage AZB construction are classified into two categories, from the aspects of electrode and battery structure. Classic examples of each category are discussed in detail, and their respective advantages/defects are compared and commented on. Finally, further challenges are elaborated to provide more insights into this area. The energy density of the state‐of‐the‐art aqueous zinc‐based batteries (AZBs) is still far below expectation, which directly hinders their practical applications. The elevation of output voltage is demonstrated to be an effective strategy to address this issue. An overview of the latest development of the high‐voltage rechargeable aqueous zinc‐based batteries is presented. Further challenges and prospects are also discussed.

Abstract:The electricity grids with high stability and reliability require a desired balance of energy supply and demand. As the typical sustainable energy, the intermittent solar and wind would result in electricity grid instability. Aqueous batteries have been considered to be appealing stationary power sources for sustainable energy. Advanced aqueous batteries can address the safety concern derived from the employment of highly toxic and flammable organic solvents in lithium-ion batteries together with the poor cycle life presented in commercialized aqueous rechargeable batteries. This review will introduce several kinds of newly developed aqueous batteries, including aqueous Li (Na)-ion batteries, zinc anode-based batteries (Zn-metal oxide, Zn-air, Zn–Br2, and Zn–Ni(OH)2 batteries), and Ni(OH)2 cathode-based batteries (Ni(OH)2–MH and Ni(OH)2-organic composite batteries). The materials, mechanisms, and battery techniques for the above aqueous batteries will be introduced in detail. The status and challenges for the application of aqueous batteries will also be discussed. The status for advanced aqueous batteries are summarized in detail. The challenges for the application of aqueous batteries are discussed.

Advanced Energy Materials

Abstract:Aqueous electrolyte‐based batteries have attracted increasing attention because of nonflammability, low cost, high power density, and environmental friendliness. However, the low energy density of aqueous lithium‐ion batteries caused by the narrow stable electrochemical window of water and electrode materials with low capacity severely limits their further development. In this regard, the development of metal anodes with high specific capacity shows excellent prospects. For example, metal zinc and aluminum anodes have high theoretical specific capacity, rich resources, and environmental friendliness, and can be used as promising anodes for high‐energy‐density aqueous rechargeable metal batteries. Unfortunately, metal anodes usually face balance issues with regard to stability and activity associated with dendrite growth and undesired side reactions in water‐based electrolytes, which is still a great challenge for aqueous metal batteries. In this review, various aqueous metal batteries including aqueous rechargeable metal batteries and aqueous metal–air batteries are summarized and highlighted. Recent advances in the design of high‐safety aqueous electrolytes and the strategies for metal anode protection are comprehensively reviewed. In addition, emerging challenges and some perspectives on the development of high‐energy‐density aqueous metal batteries are included.
