Abstract:Pyrophyllite-is widely applied as a solid pressure-transmitting and sealing medium in diamond synthesis. Mineralogical studies and preliminary measurements of pressure-transmitting qualities have been made for pyrophyllites collected from Chaochiatai. A detailed discussion is given to their types, phase transitions at elevated temperatures and pressures, with special reference to their influence on the process of diamond synthesis. Opinions are presented concerning the reasonable use of natural massive pyrophyllites and the improvement of these pressure-transmitting and sealing materials.

Pressure-transmitting Properties of Pyrophyllites from Different Localities

Abstract:ObjectivesPyrophyllite, as a sealed pressure medium, has been widely used in high-pressure research for laboratories and industrial synthesis. A highly efficient pressure transfer medium can generate higher cell pressure at the same loading force. The use of a highly efficient pressure transfer medium reduces the risk of anvil rupture and production costs. Therefore, it is important to develop a suitable and efficient pressure-transmitting pyrophyllite.MethodsThe pressure calibration of four pyrophyllites from different localities at room temperature was conducted in a 6 × 8 MN multi-anvil large-volume press. The relationship between loading force and cell pressure at room temperature was established. The influence of mineral composition changes in pyrophyllite on pressure-transmitting efficiency was studied using X-ray diffraction.ResultsBy investigating the influence of mineral composition changes in pyrophyllite on pressure-transmitting efficiency, the results are as follows: (1) When achieving the same cell pressure, the required loading force for Pyrophyllite 4 is 10% lower than those for the other three pyrophyllites, indicating that Pyrophyllite 4 has the best pressure-transmitting efficiency. (2) As cell pressure increases, the relationship between cell pressure and loading force begins to deviate from linearity, and the pressure-transmitting efficiency of pyrophyllite gradually decreases. When the cell pressure exceeds 5.00 GPa, applying higher loading force does not significantly increase the cell pressure. (3) Higher hardness minerals (such as Diaspore, Boehmite) in pyrophyllite can effectively improve pressure-transmitting efficiency in the low-pressure stage (cell pressure 2.55-3.68 GPa). When the minerals in pyrophyllite undergo phase transformation to form new minerals with higher hardness (such as Muscovite and Kaolinite) in the high-pressure stage (cell pressure of 5.50 GPa), pressure-transmitting efficiency can be effectively improved.ConclusionsPyrophyllite 4 has better pressure-transmitting efficiency than Pyrophyllite 2 does in the high-pressure stage, but it is prone to failure in sealing due to the changes in mineral composition. However, Pyrophyllite 2 shows good elastic recovery effect and sealing performance and can stably complete compression and decompression work. Considering both pressure-transmitting efficiency and sealing effect, Pyrophyllite 2 has better application value and economic benefits.
The Use of Pyrophyllite as Hermetical and Pressure Medium in High Pressure Synthesis

Abstract:Bulk material of nano-polycrystalline diamond is synthesized by independently developed two-stage large cavity static high-pressure device through the direct transformation from graphite to diamond under ultra-high pressure and high temperature.The synthesis pressure is about 17GPa and temperature is about 2300℃.Micro X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the graphite has been transformed into cubic phase diamond.The scanning electron microscopic picture and whole spectrum fitting analysis of X-ray shows that the dimension of synthesized diamond crystal is about 16nm.The Vickers hardness of the sample measured by the indentation method is above 100GPa.

Abstract:Pure-phase bulk polycrystalline diamonds are prepared through direct phase transition at ultrahigh pressure and high temperature.The phase composition and microstructure of the pure-phase bulk polycrystalline diamonds are studied by SEM,XRD and Raman spectrum.It is found that with different raw materials and different conditions,diamond samples have different colors and different grain sizes but they are all pure-phase polycrystalline diamonds.The average grain sizes for yellowtransparent and green samples are about 25 nm and 35 μm,respectively.The size of synthesized diamond blocks is φ6 mm × 6 mm.The Vicker's hardness of yellow-transparent polycrystalline diamond,HV,is 130-270 GPa at the load of 3N.According to China National Quality Supervision & Inspection Center for Abrasives,the abrasion ratio of yellow-transparent sample is 1.658 × 106,which is 25 times higher than that of commercial Co-based PCD used on oil bits.TG/DSC shows that the thermal stability of the yellow-transparent sample is almost the same as that of carat-level single-crystal diamond.Contrast grinding test,using NPD to grind against carat-level single-crystal diamond,shows that the abrasion ratio for the nano-structured polycrystalline diamond is 2.5,which demonstrates that the abrasion performance of NPD is much better than that of carat-level single-crystal diamond.

Abstract:Superhard materials are solids whose Vickers hardness is beyond 40 GPa. They have wide applications in industry such as cutting and polishing tools, wear-resistant coatings. Most preparations of superhard materials are conducted under extreme pressure and temperature conditions, not only for scientific investigations, but also for the practical applications. In this paper, we would introduce the recent progress on the design and preparations of novel superhard materials, mainly on nanopolycrystalline diamond, B–C–N superhard solid solutions, and cubic-Si3N4/diamond nanocomposites prepared under ultrahigh pressure and high temperature(HPHT), using multi-anvil apparatus based on the hinged-type cubic press. Bulk materials of all these superhard phases have been successfully synthesized and are systematically tested. We emphasize that ultra-HPHT method plays an important role in the scientific research and industrial production of superhard materials. It provides the driving forces for the light elements forming novel superhard phases as well as the way for sintering high-density nanosuperhard materials.
Semi-quantitative analysis of phase structure of pyrophyllite used for diamond synthesis under HT/HP

Abstract:The pyrophyllite used as solid seal and pressure-transfer medium in diamond synthesis under high temperature and pressure was selected in this paper,and pyrophyllite between WC anvil and dolomite lining was divided into four layers,the phase transformation of pyrophyllite in four layers were studied by means of X-ray diffraction method.At the same time,the semi-quantitative analysis of mass fraction of each layer was calculated.XRD results showed that the pyrophyllite crystal structure was gradually decomposed into diaspore,coesite and cristobalite under high temperature and high pressure.The results of the semi-quantitative analysis of each layer showed that the surface of the pyrophyllite block contains 83%(mass fraction) of pyrophyllite,17% diaspore,while the internal of the pyrophyllite block which contacting the dolomite lining contains 59% of pyrophyllite,30% diaspore,8% coesite,3% cristobalite.From surface to internal,the pyrophyllite crystal structure was gradually destroyed and other phase contents increased.Thus it will provide a new method to obtain more accurate physical parameters in computer simulation of temperature field and pressure field in diamond synthetic chamber.

Enlarged Scale Tests on Diamond Synthesis by Pressure Transmitting and Sealing Medium with Inside Diameter of 42 mm and Composed of Kaolinite and Dolomite

Abstract:Kaolinite can take the place of pyrophyllite in the use of pressure transmitting and sealing medium due to its good sealing performance,pressure transmitting property and machining capability.The selected kaolinite sample in this paper is not pure mineral,but it is more suitable for the pressure transmitting and sealing.A new pressure transmitting and sealing medium composed of kaolinite and dolomite is obtained through batching,mixing,shaping,and roasting.With this pressure transmitting and sealing medium,a large number of diamond synthesis tests are conducted.The test results show that the per unit yield of diamond is 19 g,the proportions of crystals whose compression strength and grain size are more than 160 N and 0.30 mm are 32% and 82%,respectively,and the cemented carbide anvil consumption is less than 0.5 g per 1 g of the produced diamond.In addition,the synthesis process observed is stable.Compared with pyrophyllite,the selected kaolinite-dolomite can also achieve considerable effect.

Abstract:Owing to the need for a hydrostatic high-pressure cubic large cavity (hexahedral top) press used in high-pressure research and production of superhard material, two kinds of pyrophyllite powder compacts (A and B) from pyrophyllite mine in South Africa are prepared, and compared with the domestic yellow pyrophyllite powder compacts (Mentougou, Beijing) produced by the same process, to establish experimental methods and physical criteria for evaluating the pressure transmission and sealing performance of Pyrophyllite. During the experiment, standard pressure materials such as Bi, Tl, and Ba are used to in-situ calibrate the pressure at the central positions and sealing edges of the pyrophyllite pressure chambers from the three aforementioned compacts under normal pressure conditions. Additionally, the silver melting point method is employed to obtain the corresponding relationship between chamber pressure at high temperature and system loading when using these three types of pyrophyllite as load-transmitting sealing materials. The results show that under the same hydraulic pressure loading, the difference in pressure at the central position between South African pyrophyllite B powder blocks and domestically produced pyrophyllite powder blocks does not exceed 0.1 GPa. Furthermore, in pressurization process and depressurization processe, the differences in pressure between the central position and the sealing edge of the pyrophyllite blocks are notably similar. Compared with South African pyrophyllite A powder blocks, pyrophyllite B powder blocks exhibit a closer resemblance to domestically produced pyrophyllite powder blocks in terms of high-temperature load transmission and sealing performance. Pyrophyllite B powder blocks from South Africa have the potential to serve as a substitute for domestically produced pyrophyllite without changing the existing superhard material synthesis process, making them promising candidates for use as load-transmitting media and sealing materials. These research findings hold significant academic importance in the realms of high-pressure research and superhard material production. They provide valuable insights into the selection of suitable transmission and sealing materials and the optimization of high-pressure experimental conditions. Additionally, this study presents robust method and criteria for experimental procedures and performance assessment.

Abstract:Pyrophyllite is extensively used in the high-pressure synthesis industry as a pressure-transmitting medium because of its outstanding pressure transmission, machinability, and insulation. Therefore, the atomic structure, electronic, and mechanical behavior of pyrophyllite [Al4Si8O20(OH)4] under high pressure should be discussed deeply and systematically. In the present paper, the lattice parameters, bond length, the electronic density of states, band structure, elastic constants, and mechanical parameters of pyrophyllite are investigated using density functional theory (DFT) from a microscopic perspective. The pressure dependence of atomic structure, electronic, and mechanical properties of pyrophyllite is analyzed for a wide range of pressure (from 0 GPa to 13.87 GPa). Under high pressure, the major bond lengths and layer thicknesses decrease slightly, and mechanical properties are improved with increasing pressure. The calculated electronic and band structures show only a slight change with increasing pressure, implying that the effect of pressure on the electronic property of pyrophyllite is weak, and pyrophyllite still has good stability under high pressure. The theoretical calculations presented here clarify the electronic and mechanical properties of natural pyrophyllite that are difficult to obtain experimentally because of their small particle size.

Properties and sealed heat insulation function of pyrophyllite

Preparation of Kaolinite-based Sealing-Pressure Transmission Medium with Φ40 mm Chamber and Scaled-up Tests for Diamond Synthesis

Abstract:A technique of preparing kaolinite-based sealing-pressure transmission medium is introduced.The medium consists of two parts,sealing layer and pressure transmission layer.The sealing material is mainly kaolinite which is lined inside a dolomite collar.The medium is of a cubic column shape with specifications as follows: 56 mm×56 mm×58 mm in body size,an internal cavity 40 mm in diameter,a ring 3 mm thick and 30 mm high.The manufacture process of the medium consists of dosing,mixing,mould feeding,press forming and roasting.Based on scaled-up tests,it is concluded that this sealing-pressure transmission medium have the same effect as pyrophyllite-based medium in diamond synthesis.The diamond product has a yield per unit of 95 ct(19 g) with a size(no smaller than 50/60 meshes) fraction of 80% and good crystal shape.The synthesis process is stable and easy to operate.In addition,utilization of the medium can settle the problem of shortage of pyrophyllite material used for diamond synthesis to a certain extent.

Abstract:Polycrystalline diamond composites (PDC) have been used as a cutting material in a multitude of fields, from mechanical processing to oil and gas drilling. In this study, PDC samples were prepared under high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions within a pressure interval of 5.5 to 10.5 GPa by sintering diamond powder (average grain size ~3 μm) with WC-10 wt% Co substrate. Samples obtained with varying sintering pressures and temperatures were characterized using Vickers hardness tester, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed that: (1) within a specified material system, each distinct sintering pressure condition corresponds to a unique optimal sintering temperature that yields the pinnacle of consolidation efficiency in samples. This optimal temperature exhibits a linearly increasing trend with rising sintering pressure; (2) at the intersection where the sintering pressure attains its optimal match with temperature, an increase in pressure fosters more intimate contact and stronger inter-grain bonding among diamond particles, thus amplifying the DD bond formation effect, which consequently leads to a linear enhancement in the Vickers hardness values of PDC with increasing sintering pressure; (3) simultaneously, under conditions of optimal temperature matching, elevating the sintering pressure notably decreases the cobalt content within the polycrystalline diamond layer of PDC samples. These findings furnish crucial experimental evidence for optimizing PDC material properties, significantly contributing to the advancement of both theoretical exploration and technological innovation within the field, carrying profound academic value and practical guidance implications.

Abstract:Indialite ceramic was prepared using fly ash and magnesium carbonate powder as precursors. The effects of sintering aids LiOH · H2O and TiO2 on its crystallization and morphology evolution were studied as well. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the formation of indialite was achieved by solid-state sintering reactions at 1200 °C for 4 h. With increasing amounts of LiOH · H2O, the viscosity decreased and β-spodumene, spinel phases started to develop at the expense of indialite. Scanning electron microscopy observations revealed that the surface of the sintered samples became smoother with higher porosity losses and grain size reduction. As the TiO2 contents increased from 4 to 10%, dauphine-twinned quartz and rutile were formed by simultaneously consuming indialite. In this process, the viscosity showed no significant changes.
Application of rectangular pyrophyllite block in artificial synthetic diamond

Abstract:Through the comparative analysis of the differences and connections between the rectangular pyrophyllite block and the cubic block used in artificial synthetic diamond,and comparisons of diamond synthesis experiments,the results showed that the anvil consumption was effectively reduced using the reasonably rectangular pyrophyllite than the cubic block,and can improve the yield and grade of the diamond.

Fullerenes Nanotubes and Carbon Nanostructures

Abstract:The exceptional properties of diamonds enable diverse applications. However, the applications are significantly hindered by its inclusions. In this study, a specific type of inclusion, broom-like inclusions, has been investigated. The broom-like inclusions in diamonds were synthesized through various high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) experiments. The synthesis methods were optimized by adjusting the metal catalyst composition, synthesis temperature, Mg(OH) 2 content, and nitrogen getter (Ti). The broom-like inclusion morphology and composition were physically characterized and analyzed using various methods. Optical microscopy and SEM were utilized to characterize the morphology and shape of the inclusions, while Raman spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy were employed to analyze the influence of the defects on the properties of diamonds and investigate the composition of the broom-like inclusions. Gaseous inclusions emerged as crucial for broom-like inclusion formation. They probably originated from residual gases like H 2 and CH 4 . The investigation of broom-like inclusions within diamond crystals has led to the development of various synthetic methods for producing inclusion-free crystals. The findings of this study offer valuable insights into the nature and origin of these inclusions in diamonds, as well as provide strategies to mitigate their formation during production.
