Abstract:This paper provides the recent advances and researches about non-destructive testing (NDT) methods for defect characterization in engineering materials and composites. The paper covers the review on the capabilities of NDT applications such as Visual Testing (VT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Thermography, Radiographic Testing (RT), Electromagnetic Testing (ET), Acoustic Emission (AE) and shearography testing with respect to advantages and disadvantages of these methods. Further methods are classified on basis of their intrinsic characteristics and their applications. Mostly, an NDT evaluator uses only one non-destructive test method to perform the evaluation. If the scope of work is straight forward, using a single test method is acceptable. However, there are times when a single test method does not provide enough information about the material integrity and thereby combination of different methods is essential. Non destructive testing is widely applied in power plants, aerospace, nuclear industry, military and defence, storage tank inspection, pipe and tube inspection and composite defects characterization. This paper mainly focuses on the scope of NDT application for composite materials.

Abstract:Nondestructive testing (NDT), also known as nondestructive evaluation (NDE), includes various techniques to characterize materials without damage. This article focuses on the typical NDE techniques that may be considered when conducting a failure investigation. The article begins with discussion about the concept of the probability of detection (POD), on which the statistical reliability of crack detection is based. The coverage includes the various methods of surface inspection, including visual-examination tools, scanning technology in dimensional metrology, and the common methods of detecting surface discontinuities by magnetic-particle inspection, liquid penetrant inspection, and eddy-current testing. The major NDE methods for internal (volumetric) inspection in failure analysis also are described.

Abstract:Material failure may occur in a variety of situations dependent on stress conditions, temperature, and internal or external load conditions. Many of the latest engineered materials combine several material types i.e., metals, carbon, glass, resins, adhesives, heterogeneous and nanomaterials (organic/inorganic) to produce multilayered, multifaceted structures that may fail in ductile, brittle, or both cases. Mechanical testing is a standard and basic component of any design and fabricating process. Mechanical testing also plays a vital role in maintaining cost-effectiveness in innovative advancement and predominance. Destructive tests include tensile testing, chemical analysis, hardness testing, fatigue testing, creep testing, shear testing, impact testing, stress rapture testing, fastener testing, residual stress measurement, and XRD. These tests can damage the molecular arrangement and even the microstructure of engineered materials. Nondestructive testing methods evaluate component/material/object quality without damaging the sample integrity. This review outlines advanced nondestructive techniques and explains predominantly used nondestructive techniques with respect to their applications, limitations, and advantages. The literature was further analyzed regarding experimental developments, data acquisition systems, and technologically upgraded accessory components. Additionally, the various combinations of methods applied for several types of material defects are reported. The ultimate goal of this review paper is to explain advanced nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques/tests, which are comprised of notable research work reporting evolved affordable systems with fast, precise, and repeatable systems with high accuracy for both experimental and data acquisition techniques. Furthermore, these advanced NDT approaches were assessed for their potential implementation at the industrial level for faster, more accurate, and secure operations.

Abstract:The field of nondestructive testing (NDT) is a very broad, interdiscip linary field, that plays a critical role in assuring the structural components and systems, performs their function in a reliable and cost effective fashion. Welded sample of SS304L is tested by various NDT techniques such as Magnetic particle Inspection. Liquid Penetrate test and Ultrasonic flaw detection in the present investigation studies. Testing procedure and methodology for detection of flaw is clearly discussed in the present studies. In Ultrasonic testing we detected two discontinuities. In the liquid penetrant test, no surface defects were found. In Magnetic Particle Inspection, linear surface defects were found.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring (SHM) is an important aspect of the assessment of various structures and infrastructure, which involves inspection, monitoring, and maintenance to support economics, quality of life and sustainability in civil engineering. Currently, research has been conducted in order to develop non-destructive techniques for SHM to extend the lifespan of monitored structures. This paper will review and summarize the recent advancements in non-destructive testing techniques, namely, sweep frequency approach, ground penetrating radar, infrared technique, fiber optics sensors, camera-based methods, laser scanner techniques, acoustic emission and ultrasonic techniques. Although some of the techniques are widely and successfully utilized in civil engineering, there are still challenges that researchers are addressing. One of the common challenges within the techniques is interpretation, analysis and automation of obtained data, which requires highly skilled and specialized experts. Therefore, researchers are investigating and applying artificial intelligence, namely machine learning algorithms to address the challenges. In addition, researchers have combined multiple techniques in order to improve accuracy and acquire additional parameters to enhance the measurement processes. This study mainly focuses on the scope and recent advancements of the Non-destructive Testing (NDT) application for SHM of concrete, masonry, timber and steel structures.

Abstract:Composite materials/structures are advancing in product efficiency, cost-effectiveness and the development of superior specific properties. There are increasing demands in their applications to load-carrying structures in aerospace, wind turbines, transportation, medical equipment and so on. Thus, robust and reliable non-destructive testing of composites is essential to reduce safety concerns and maintenance costs. There have been various non-destructive testing methods built upon different principles for quality assurance during the whole lifecycle of a composite product. This article reviews the most established non-destructive testing techniques for detection and evaluation of defects/damage evolution in composites. These include acoustic emission, ultrasonic testing, infrared thermography, terahertz testing, shearography, digital image correlation, as well as X-ray and neutron imaging. For each non-destructive testing technique, we cover a brief historical background, principles, standard practices, equipment and facilities used for composite research. We also compare and discuss their benefits and limitations and further summarise their capabilities and applications to composite structures. Each non-destructive testing technique has its own potential and rarely achieves a full-scale diagnosis of structural integrity. Future development of non-destructive testing techniques for composites will be directed towards intelligent and automated inspection systems with high accuracy and efficient data processing capabilities.

Abstract:The use of steel has grown rapidly over the past decades. However, corrosion under coating detection still presents challenges for nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques. One of such challenges is the lift-off introduced by complex structures. Inaccessibility due to structure leads corrosion to be undetected, which can lead to catastrophic failure. Furthermore, lift-off effects reduce the sensitivities. The limitations of existing NDT techniques heighten the need for novel approaches to the characterization of corrosion. This paper begins with a discussion of the challenges associated with corrosion detection of metal under coating. Secondly, reviews are given of the most NDT methods used for the detection of corrosion under coating. The different techniques based on nondestructive testing methods such as ultrasonic, acoustic, electromagnetic, radiographic, and thermographic have been detailed out. This review presents the significance and advantages provided by the emerging NDT techniques. In the end, the trends and identified problems are summarized.

Abstract:Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites offer a corrosion-resistant, lightweight, and durable alternative to traditional steel material in concrete structures. However, the lack of established inspection methods for assessing reinforced concrete elements with externally bonded FRP (EB-FRP) composites hinders industry-wide confidence in their adoption. This study addresses this gap by investigating non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for detecting damage and defects in EB-FRP concrete elements. As such, this study first identified and categorized potential damage in EB-FRP concrete elements considering where and why they occur. The most promising NDT methods for detecting this damage were then analyzed. And lastly, experiments were carried out to assess the feasibility of the selected NDT methods for detecting these defects. The result of this study introduces infrared thermography (IR) as a proper method for identifying defects underneath the FRP system (wet lay-up). The IR was capable of highlighting defects as small as 625 mm2 (1 in.2) whether between layers (debonding) or between the substrate and FRP (delamination). It also indicates the inability of GPR to detect damage below the FRP laminates, while indicating the capability of PAU to detect concrete delamination and qualitatively identify bond damage in the FRP system. The outcome of this research can be used to provide guidance for choosing effective on-site NDT techniques, saving considerable time and cost for inspection. Importantly, this study also paves the way for further innovation in damage detection techniques addressing the current limitations.

By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of these methods,the authors suggested that diverse NDT methods should be combined to accomplish full inspection for the wall of tank in service.

Abstract:In recent years, composite materials have gained popularity in numerous high-tech and engineering applications, owing to their outstanding physico-mechanical properties. They were initially used as fairings/reinforcements for different structures, but their application has recently shifted from general-purpose structures to primary and secondary load-bearing structures, where structural failures would result in catastrophic safety repercussions. This increased scope of application has prompted the introduction of composite structures featuring significant thickness and complexity. As such, the application of nondestructive testing and evaluation (NDT&E) to localize and characterize flaws in these materials at their incipient initiations could save resources, eliminate unplanned breakdown, and provide a timely window for repair-maintenance activities. Therefore, this paper critically reviews the recent advances in NDT&E as applied to the inspection of thick composite parts and sandwich structures (composites with a thickness ≥ 15 mm) and determines possible research prospects to address the limitations of the current technologies. A brief overview of defects/damage occurring in composite structures is provided followed by the main NDT&E techniques used to detect these flaws. Since there are many NDT&E techniques available, this work limits its scope on techniques that focus on the detection, localization, and characterization of flaws in thick composites and sandwich structures.

Abstract:Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), a novel high-performance material, has found extensive use across various domains. Due to the intricate structure of CFRP and variability in its manufacturing process, such as differences in resin curing speeds or carbon fiber alignment, defects including voids and inclusions can inevitably occur. These defects can compromise the material's performance and reliability, making Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) essential for early defect detection and real-time monitoring. This paper reviews existing NDT technologies like visual inspection, computed tomography (CT), ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission testing, infrared thermal imaging, eddy current testing, and Raman spectroscopy. To facilitate performance comparison, we use spider charts to illustrate key aspects of each technique, including detection accuracy, damage localisation, interface details, and online monitoring capabilities. These charts specifically highlight the superior overall performance of CT. The principles, applications, and cutting-edge advancements in NDT techniques and Structural Health Monitoring systems (SHM) are systematically discussed. This review delves into the principles, strengths, and limitations of CFRP damage detection methods, includes detailed examples and provides a selection criterion for the work of NDT researchers.

Abstract:The article presents results of the investigation of the quantitative evaluation of the degree of damage, described by the measure of accumulated plastic strain obtained in a static tensile test, using selected non-destructive techniques. Inconel 718 alloy was tested. The tests were conducted using a new type of specimens of variable cross-sectional area of measuring part. This provided a continuous distribution of plastic strain in the gage part of the specimen. The permanent deformation that varies along the sample axis enables an analysis of damage induced by a plastic deformation. The proposed method enables replacing the series of specimens by one sample. Degradation of the alloy corresponds with the changes of the electromagnetic properties of the material—the phase angle of the complex impedance of the eddy current, as well as with acoustics properties of material—acoustic birefringence of ultrasonic waves. It allows to determine the degree of damage of the material using noninvasive, non-destructive methods. Using the damage parameter proposed by Johnson it is possible to obtain the correlation between the non-destructive results and a damage degree of the material. The presented testing method delivers information about changes in the material structure caused by permanent deformation.

Abstract:The deterioration of concrete structures in the last few decades calls for effective methods for condition evaluation and maintenance. This resulted in development of several nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques for monitoring civil infrastructures. NDT methods have been used for more than three decades for monitoring concrete structures; now it has been recognized that NDT plays an important role in the condition monitoring of existing RC structures. NDT methods are known to be better to assess and evaluate the condition of RC structures practically. This paper reviewed several available NDT methods developed and used in the last few decades.

Abstract:Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of materials for characterising various key microstructural features, mechanical properties (tension, creep, fatigue crack growth, hardness and fracture toughness), deformation and damage mechanisms has attracted considerable attention in the past 20 years as a primary step towards ensuring structural integrity of components. However, until recently, the correlations between the various NDE parameters and material properties have been only empirical and based on physical principles. The interaction between the NDE probing medium and the mechanical behaviour is not yet fully understood. The purpose of this review is to discuss the progress made in the application of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques in evaluating various microstructural features and mechanical properties with emphasis on recent studies. Reinterpretation of older data, in the light of present understanding of the interaction of the NDE probing medium with material parameters, is carried out selectively. The NDT techniques evaluated include acoustic emission, ultrasonic attenuation and velocity, magnetic hysteresis parameters, magnetic Barkhausen emission, acoustic Barkhausen emission, laser interferometry, positron annihilation, X-ray diffraction and small angle neutron scattering. Critical assessments of the applicability of the various NDE techniques for the material parameters are provided.

Abstract:This work presents a review of the three most efficient non-destructive testing methods. The methods are radiography, eddy current and ultrasonic inspection. These particular techniques were chosen because they are able to cover most of the industrial needs for welding joint inspection. The aim of this work is to present the physical background of operation for the given methods, discuss their benefits, limitations, and typical areas of application, and compare them with each other. In the first part of this work, all three methods and their variations are described in detail with schemes and figures which represent their working principles. It appears that, although all the given methods can detect all types of flaws in welded joints, they have their specific limitations. For example, ultrasonic testing is able to detect defects only in certain directions. The eddy current technique is also sensitive to defect direction, but it can be applied for inspecting conductive materials only. The main flaw of radiography is the resolution: it is not usable for very fine defects. The second part of the work is for comparing the testing methods and for drawing the conclusions. The methods are compared according to the possible materials, defect types and their position, as well as the possible areas of application. This part gives the background for choosing a proper welding joint testing method for certain applications in the welding industry.

Abstract:In the present work, the recent advancements in additive manufacturing (AM) techniques for fabricating nanocomposite parts with complex shaped structures are explained, along with defect non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. A brief overview of the AM processes for nanocomposites is presented, grouped by the type of feedstock used in each technology. This work also reviews the defects in nanocomposites that can affect the quality of the final product. Additionally, a detailed description of X-CT, ultrasonic phased array technology, and infrared thermography is provided, highlighting their potential application in non-destructive inspection of nanocomposites in the future. Lastly, it concludes by offering recommendations for the development of NDT methods specifically tailored for nanocomposites, emphasizing the need to utilize NDT methods for optimizing nano-additive manufacturing process parameters, developing new NDT techniques, and enhancing the resolution of existing NDT methods.

Abstract:In Wire and Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) and fusion welding, various defects such as porosity, cracks, deformation and lack of fusion can occur during the fabrication process. These have a strong impact on the mechanical properties and can also lead to failure of the manufactured parts during service. These defects can be recognized using non-destructive testing (NDT) methods so that the examined workpiece is not harmed. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of various NDT techniques for WAAM and fusion welding, including laser-ultrasonic, acoustic emission with an airborne optical microphone, optical emission spectroscopy, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, laser opto-ultrasonic dual detection, thermography and also in-process defect detection via weld current monitoring with an oscilloscope. In addition, the novel research conducted, its operating principle and the equipment required to perform these techniques are presented. The minimum defect size that can be identified via NDT methods has been obtained from previous academic research or from tests carried out by companies. The use of these techniques in WAAM and fusion welding applications makes it possible to detect defects and to take a step towards the production of high-quality final components.
