Abstract:Photocatalytic H-2 production from H2O is promising for solving the energy and environment problems. Zeolites have been widely used in thermocatalysis, but their application in photocatalysis is limited. Herein, we anchor CdS and Pt nanoparticles on a NaY zeolite (ZP48) fabricated via 48 h crystallization to form a CdS/Pt/ZP48 photocatalyst for visible-light-driven photocatalytic H-2 production from H2O. CdS/Pt/ZP48 shows a H-2 production rate (686.5 lmol h(-1)) which is higher than those on Pt/CdS (263.2 lmol h(-1)) and photocatalysts with zeolite supports prepared by using crystallization times shorter and longer than 48 h, with an apparent quantum efficiency of 23.5% and superior stability. ZP48 promotes the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, thus releasing more electrons for enhancing the photocatalytic H-2 production on CdS/Pt/ZP48. These results are helpful for fabricating more efficient photocatalysts by zeolites which are widely used in industry but have poor ability in light absorption and charge transfer. Abstract:The development of novel photocatalyst is an important issue for improving the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency. Herein, novel aqueous ternary CdxMo1−xSe quantum dots (QDs) are prepared with five ratios (x = 0, 0.5, 0.67, 0.75, 1) by modulating the metal content. Experimental results show that the doping of Mo promotes the photoinduced electrons transfer and decreases the photoinduced electron–hole pairs recombination. Compared with the CdSe QDs, Cd0.75Mo0.25Se QDs, Cd0.5Mo0.5Se QDs and MoSe2 QDs, Cd0.67Mo0.33Se QDs exhibit significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity, and the amount of H2 production comes up to 911.1 μmol in 7 h. Meanwhile, the Cd0.67Mo0.33Se QDs display substantially high stability in recycling test, which facilitates the utilization of ternary QDs in the photocatalytic hydrogen production application.

Abstract:In this work, CdS quantum dots (QDs) supported on Ga2O3 and In2O3 are applied for visible-light-driven H-2 evolution from aqueous solutions that contain lactic acid. With Pt as the cocatalyst, the H-2 evolution rates on CdS/Pt/Ga2O3 and CdS/Pt/In2O3 are as high as 995.8 and 1032.2 mu mol h(-1), respectively, under visible light (lambda > 420 nm) with apparent quantum efficiencies of 43.6 and 45.3% obtained at 460 nm, respectively. These are much higher than those on Pt/CdS (108.09 mu mol h(-1)), Pt/Ga2O3 (0.12 mu mol h(-1)), and Pt/In2O3 (0.05 mu mol h(-1)). The photocatalysts have been characterized thoroughly and their band structures and photocurrent responses have been measured. The band alignment between the CdS QDs and In2O3 can lead to interfacial charge separation, which cannot occur between the CdS QDs and Ga2O3. Among the various possible factors that contribute to the high H-2 evolution rates on CdS/Pt/oxide, the surface properties of the metal oxides play important roles, which include (i) the anchoring of CdS QDs and Pt nanoparticles for favorable interactions and (ii) the efficient trapping of photo-generated electrons from the CdS QDs because of surface defects (such as oxygen defects) based on photoluminescence and photocurrent studies.

Abstract:In-depth understandings of charge carrier transfer dynamics in any artificial catalytic system are of critical importance for the future design of highly efficient photocatalysts. Herein, we synthesized sub-monolayer ZnSe partial-shell coated CdSe/CdS core/shell quantum dots in a controlled fashion. The ZnSe decorated quantum dots were employed as a model catalyst for photogeneration of H2 under light illumination. Both theoretical calculations and experimental results unravel that the growth of ZnSe partial-shell would retard the photogenerated electron transfer, and meanwhile, accelerate the corresponding hole migration process during the H2 photogeneration reaction in the artificial photocatalytic system. As such, the performance of the relevant photocatalytic system can be modulated and optimized, and accordingly, a plausible underlying mechanism is rationalized.

Abstract:BackgroundSolar-driven water splitting is regarded as one promising green way to produce H2. Photo-reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) to hypotoxic Cr(III) can control the Cr(VI)-induced pollution. A key in these processes is to develop a photocatalyst with high specific surface area, good light absorption and efficient charge carrier separation.MethodsA Co-encapsulated N-doped carbon (Co@NC) was prepared by pyrolysis ZIF-8@ZIF-67 precursor to modify CdSe quantum dots (QDs). The obtained catalyst was used to reduce Cr(VI) and split water under visible light irradiation.Significant findingsModification CdSe with Co@NC made obtained Co@NC/CdSe possessing enhanced visible-light absorption and photoexcited charge separation. The optimal 2%Co@NC/CdSe exhibited the excellent Cr(VI) reduction performance with a rate constant of 0.28 min–1 in the absence of sacrificial agent, as well as high H2 evolution rate of 6.48 mmol g–1 h–1 in 10% lactic acid solution. The H2O2 and electrons were the active species to reduce Cr(VI). This work gives a beneficial insight for improving the photocatalytic activity of QDs.

Abstract:The utilization of low‐energy sunlight to produce renewable fuels is a subject of great interest. Here we report the first example of metal chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) capped with a pyridinethiolate carboxylic acid (pyS‐COOH) for red‐light‐driven H2 production in water. The precious‐metal‐free system is robust over 240 h, and achieves a turnover number (TON) of 43910 ± 305 (vs Ni) with a rate of 31570 ± 1690 mmol g‐1 h‐1 for hydrogen production. In contrast to the inactive QDs capped with other thiolate ligands, the CdSe‐pyS‐COOH QDs give a significantly higher singlet oxygen quantum yield [ΦΔ (1O2)] in solution.

Abstract:Hydrogen generation via photocatalysis-driven water splitting provides a convenient approach to turn solar energy into chemical fuel. The development of photocatalysis system that can effectively harvest visible light for hydrogen generation is an essential task in order to utilize this technology. Herein, a kind of cadmium free Zn-Ag-In-S (ZAIS) colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) that shows remarkably photocatalytic efficiency in the visible region is developed. More importantly, a nanocomposite based on the combination of 0D ZAIS CQDs and 2D MoS2 nanosheet is developed. This can leverage the strong light harvesting capability of CQDs and catalytic performance of MoS2 simultaneously. As a result, an excellent external quantum efficiency of 40.8% at 400 nm is achieved for CQD-based hydrogen generation catalyst. This work presents a new platform for the development of high-efficiency photocatalyst based on 0D-2D nanocomposite.

Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an ideal green product with a broad range of applications, and visible-light-driven photocatalytic H2O2 production is deemed a sustainable and eco-friendly strategy. Herein, various ZnxCd1-xS/MXene photocatalysts with a Schottky junction were prepared for photocatalytic H2O2 production. The obtained Zn0.3Cd0.7S/MXene (ZCM-0.3) hybrid presented the highest photocatalytic H2O2 production rate in pure neutral water of 1160 μmol h-1 g-1, which was further improved to 2178.58 μmol h-1 g-1 in the presence of isopropanol as the sacrificial reagent. The experimental results demonstrated that the sufficient visible-light-harvesting ability and appropriate conduction band potential of the Zn0.3Cd0.7S solid solution, the excellent conductivity and two-electron selectivity of MXene, and the construction of Schottky junctions at the Zn0.3Cd0.7S/MXene interface resulted in the fast transfer and separation of the photogenerated charge carriers and the targeted reduction of oxygen to H2O2. The photocatalytic mechanism for H2O2 production was studied and proposed. Moreover, a simple photo-Fenton system consisting of ZnxCd1-xS/MXene and ferrous ions (Fe2+) was constructed and applied for the degradation of various emerging pollutants, which also performed effectively and exhibited universality across different pollutants. Overall, this study presents a novel and useful strategy to convert solar energy into chemical energy through efficient H2O2 production and provides an effective alternative for the degradation of emerging pollutants.

Abstract:The sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is often the bottleneck of photocatalytic overall water splitting, greatly suppressing the hydrogen-production activity. Herein, the slow OER was replaced by selective benzyl alcohol (BA) oxidation to benzaldehyde (BD) to promote H2 production. The photocatalytic reaction was conducted over CdS quantum dots, which were modified with Co2+ hole cocatalysts to further accelerate the ratelimiting BA oxidation. The photocatalytic system exhibits an ultra-high H2-production rate of 257.8 mmol g-1 h-1 with a remarkable apparent quantum yield of 69.3% under 365-nm light irradiation. The high performance is attributed to the Co2+ hole cocatalysts on CdS surfaces, which not only enhance light absorption but also facilitate photogenerated carrier transfer. More importantly, both photogenerated electrons and holes are fully utilized in meaningful reactions. This work exemplifies a bifunctional photocatalytic system for simultaneous production of self-separated hydrogen and benzaldehyde, both of which are important industrial products.
Highly Efficient Direct Z-scheme WO3/CdS-diethylenetriamine Photocatalyst and Its Enhanced Photocatalytic H-2 Evolution under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Cadmium sulfide (CdS) has demonstrated great promise in artificial photocataytic hydrogen (H-2) production. However, the serious photocorrosion hinders its effective interaction and real-life application. In this work, a typical direct Z-scheme WO3/CdS-diethylenetriamine (CdS-DETA) composite has been designed via facile in-situ solvothermal method, which exhibits excellent H-2 production properties in visible light region. In this system, the inorganic-organic CdS-DETA nanobelts (NBs) possess enough active sites and large surface area for the encouraging nanojunction structure information. Furthermore, we also systematically calculated energy band structure and investigated charge transfer of the WO3/CdS-DETA by PL and photocurrent test, the results demonstrated that the suitable band gap matching between CdS-DETA and WO3 and high redox potential improve the separation of photogenerated holes and electrons, restraining intrinsic photocorrosion of CdS as well as improving the photocatalytic activity. 5% WO3/CdS-DETA presented the most outstanding H-2 evolution rate (15522 lmol g (1) h (1)), which is twice higher than that of pure CdS-DETA. WO3/CdS-DETA composites also presented high stability after three recycle H-2 production experiment. Finally, direct Z- scheme photocatalytic mechanism is calculated. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) has received increasing attention as an important green-oxidate and energy carrier, but the H2O2 production industry has been plagued by high energy consumption and high environment risk in current processing technology. Photocatalytic production of H2O2 from earth-abundant water and molecular oxygen (O2) is seemed to be a potential solution. Core–shell CdS@CdIn2S4 heterojunctions was prepared through a "sequential two-step hydrothermal growth" route. The photoexcited CdIn2S4 moiety transfers the conduction band electrons to CdS, leading to selective production of H2O2 via single-electron reduction of O2. In contrast, the valence band holes photoformed on the CdS moieties are transferred to CdIn2S4, leading to efficient oxidation of water. The electron–hole separation enhanced by the core–shell structure of CdS@CdIn2S4 heterojunctions and significantly suppresses the charge recombination, which resulting in greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity for H2O2 production. The resultant catalyst shows an ultra-high H2O2 production rate of 1408.4 μmol/L in non-sacrificial system, which is about 3.8 times higher than that of pure CdS. This inorganic photocatalysis therefore shows potential as an artificial photosynthesis for H2O2 production by powdered catalysts.

Abstract:CdS quantum dots (CdS QDs) are regarded as a promising photocatalyst due to their remarkable response to visible light and suitable placement of conduction bands and valence bands. However, the problem of photocorrosion severely restricts their application. Herein, the CdS QDs-Co9S8 hollow nanotube composite photocatalyst has been successfully prepared by loading Co9S8 nanotubes onto CdS QDs through an electrostatic self-assembly method. The experimental results show that the introduction of Co9S8 cocatalyst can form a stable structure with CdS QDs, and can effectively avoid the photocorrosion of CdS QDs. Compared with blank CdS QDs, the CdS QDs-Co9S8 composite exhibits obviously better photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. In particular, CdS QDs loaded with 30% Co9S8 (CdS QDs-30%Co9S8) demonstrate the best photocatalytic performance, and the H2 production rate reaches 9642.7 μmol·g-1·h-1, which is 60.3 times that of the blank CdS QDs. A series of characterizations confirm that the growth of CdS QDs on Co9S8 nanotubes effectively facilitates the separation and migration of photogenerated carriers, thereby improving the photocatalytic hydrogen production properties of the composite. We expect that this work will facilitate the rational design of CdS-based photocatalysts, thereby enabling the development of more low-cost, high-efficiency and high-stability composites for photocatalysis.
Facile synthesis of ZnCdS quantum dots via a novel photoetching MOF strategy for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Abstract:MOF self-sulfurizing is regarded as a promising approach for preparing quantum dots (QDs). Herein, ZnCdS QDs were constructed by photoetching self-sulfurization of a novel 3D metal–organic framework (namely PZH) for the first time. The results of the morphology and X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterizations show that the ZnCdS QDs do not self-aggregate, and the frame structure of PZH remain intact. Under visible-light irradiation, ZnCdS QDs/PZH with the photoetching time of 60 min (ZnCdS −3 /PZH) exhibits a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production rate with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 18.51 % at 420 nm. The improvement of photocatalytic activity can be predominantly attributed to an outstanding four synergism of promoting separation and transfer of carriers owing to ZnCdS QDs shortening the charge transmission distance, inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electron-holes of uniform dispersed quantum dots without aggregating, optimizing the adsorption behavior of the active intermediates (H*) owing to the synergistic action between ZnCdS QDs and PZH, offering more holes for reactant molecules transmission due to presence of PZH. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that ZnCdS quantum dots relative to large size S-ZnCdS is going to help reduce the Gibbs free energy of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. More importantly, this rare strategy not only flourish the design idea of quantum dots, but also promote the applications of MOF in photocatalytic H 2 production.

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting to value-added hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production is more promising than the traditional O-2 evolution. However, enabling efficient PEC H2O2 generation is still challenging due to competitive two-/four-electron water oxidation pathways. In this work, ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) photoanodes were engineered by Se doping and colloidal quantum dots (QDs) modification to boost the PEC H2O2 evolution efficiency. Morphology and elemental studies testify the successful Se doping in ZIS and the anchoring of QDs on ZIS-Se photoelectrodes. Photoinduced carrier kinetics investigation verifies the optimized band bending, suppressed charge recombination, and promoted charge transfer in as-prepared ZIS-Se and ZIS-Se/QDs photoanodes, exhibiting inhibited four-electron O-2 evolution and facilitated two-electron H2O2 production during PEC water oxidation, as evidenced by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Accordingly, the Se-doped and QD-sdecorated ZIS photoelectrodes demonstrate a gradually less upward band bending and improved photo-excited hole transfer to the surface, delivering a maximum H2O2 production rate of 1.32 mu mol min(-1) cm(-2) with a Faraday efficiency of 86 % at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under one sun illumination.
