Abstract:In recent years, there has been a notable surge in environmental incidents, including wildfires and chemical releases. Responses to such events have primarily focused on addressing acute and immediate impacts. However, potential long-term health risks have been overlooked. Our proposed framework first advocates for the holistic identification of contaminants, prioritizing persistent organic contaminants determined through both knowledge-based and non-targeted and targeted analysis. We suggest integrating environmental monitoring and modeling approaches to assess the extent and composition of contamination caused by these chemicals. To facilitate swift assessments, we advocate the development of streamlined chemical analysis techniques and dedicated technologies for in situ monitoring of persistent organic chemicals. In addition, we provide an overview of both traditional and state-of-the-art approaches to risk assessment and introduce a three-tier risk assessment framework for evaluating the long-term health risks associated with environmental incidents. We emphasize the importance of in situ soil remediation and coordinated recovery efforts, including effective communication, evacuation, and cleaning plans for affected spaces, which are pivotal for facilitating recovery from environmental incidents. This comprehensive approach fortifies preparedness and recovery strategies, providing a robust framework for managing future environmental crises.

Abstract:Understanding the complicate chemical components in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) helps policy makers for pollutants control track progress and identify disparities in overall health risks. However, till now, information on accurate component detection, source identification, and effect-oriented risk assessment is scarce, especially for the simultaneous analysis of a broad-spectrum of compounds. In this study, a high-throughput target method was employed to distinguish the occurrence and characteristics of 152 chemicals: phthalate esters (PAEs), organophosphate esters (OPEs), carboxylic acid esters (CAEs), nitrophenols (NPs), nitrogen heterocyclic compounds (NHCs), per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), triclosan and its derivatives (TCSs), and organosulfates (OSs) in ambient PM2.5 collected from Beijing, China. Detection frequencies of 77 targeted compounds were >50 %. Total concentrations of all compounds ranged from 33.1 to 745 ng/m3. The median concentration of ∑PAEs (108 ng/m3) was the highest, followed by ∑CAEs (12.2 ng/m3) and ∑NPs (10.1 ng/m3). Organophosphate diesters (di-OPEs) and TCSs were reported for the first time in ambient PM2.5. The pollutants mainly originated from the local industrial production, release of building materials, and environmental degradation of parent compounds. Based on absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET)-oriented risk evaluations, we found that bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, and di (2-ethylhexyl) adipate have high health risks. Additionally, the high oxidative stress potential of 4-nitrocatechol and the strong blood-brain barrier penetration potential of triclosan cannot be ignored. Our study will facilitate the evaluations of specific health outcomes and mechanisms of pollutants, and suggestion of pollutants priority control to reduce human health hazards caused by atmospheric particles.
Health impacts and spatiotemporal variations of fine particulate and its typical toxic constituents in five urban agglomerations of China

Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its constituents pose great threatens to public health. The spatial-temporal characteristics of some key chemical constituents, such as sulfate, nitrate, and especially toxic trace elements in China has remained unclear, limiting further studies on evaluating the associated public health. Here, we conduct a two-yearlong (2012 and 2015) air quality simulation by coupling localized emission inventory for primary air pollutants and trace elements with a modified CMAQ model in a domain of China and five urban agglomerations. Associated health burdens of PM2.5 and various toxic trace elements are assessed applying exposure assessment models. The model successfully reproduces air pollution situations. Significant spatial-temporal variations of PM2.5 and chemical constituents are observed, with higher concentrations mainly occurred in North China Plain (NCP), Fenwei Plain (FWP) and Sichuan-Chongqing Basin (SCB). All chemical constituents in PM2.5 show higher concentrations in winter except for sulfate. From 2012 to 2015, the annual averaged PM2.5 concentration and its constituents decreased by 3% -20% nationally and regionally. Smaller reductions of nitrate make PM2.5 pollution become nitrate-dominated, especially in winter. Approximately 0.28 million deaths related to PM2.5 in China are avoided, while the population affected by the cancer risks of Cr (VI) and arsenic has slightly increased from 2012 to 2015. Our findings could provide critical insights on the mitigation of air pollution, as well as benefit for epidemiological studies on air pollutants related health effects.

Abstract:Recent Global Burden of Disease studies have provided quantitative evidence of the significant risk of ambient pollution to human health globally, but particularly in Asia. In the mega cities of emerging Asian economies, the rapidly growing fleet of vehicles - not necessarily low emitters - contribute to overall air pollution. On a continental scale, power generation, with billions of tonnes of coal burned annually, household emissions, trans-boundary pollution, and resuspended desert and exposed soil dust, all are the constituents of the ambient air pollution which is particularly acute in cities. By 2050, the world population is expected to grow to 9.3 billion, with 6.3 billion living in urban areas. China is at the forefront of this trend with 89 cities in 2010 exceeding one million of habitants, out of 442 such cities worldwide. The economic burden of the impact of air pollution on human life is evident around the world by the cost of health care. In addition to human health, it has been conclusively established that the release of the products of fossil fuel combustion into the air, which has accelerated exponentially over the past decades, has significant and long term consequences on the entire Earth system. The emissions originate from industrial, transport and energy generation sources, and have been studied and quantified in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as other greenhouse gases, including methane, nitrogen oxides and ozone. Based on this, predictions have been made about the future climate, particularly in terms of temperature increase, which in turn drives the evolution of the Earth as a whole. While the pressing need for lowering the emissions and significant improvement of air quality has been identified, the complexity of the problem requires input from a diverse mix of science, technology, innovation, health disciplines and policy. Further, to accelerate progress in cleaning the air, cross-disciplinary and applied research, and most importantly, international collaboration is of crucial significance. In this context, it is our pleasure to present the STOTEN Special Issue (SI) focused on: Air Quality in China: Current and Emerging Challenges.

Abstract:Significance More intense extreme events are projected under future climate change. However, the impacts of climate extremes on future air quality and associated health implications are not well recognized and are rarely quantified in China, with an enormous health burden from air pollution. Here, we estimate the climate-driven air pollution mortality in China and find that future climate change is likely to exacerbate air pollution mortality, largely influenced by the more intense extreme events such as stagnation events and heat waves. Our analysis provides quantitative assessments and insights regarding the links between climate extremes, future air quality, and public health, suggesting that extreme weather events may be an important mechanism by which climate change will affect air quality, and especially fine particulate matter.

Abstract:Air pollution contributes to the premature deaths of millions of people each year around the world, and air quality problems are growing in many developing nations. While past policy efforts have succeeded in reducing particulate matter and trace gases in North America and Europe, adverse health effects are found at even these lower levels of air pollution. Future policy actions will benefit from improved understanding of the interactions and health effects of different chemical species and source categories. Achieving this new understanding requires air pollution scientists and engineers to work increasingly closely with health scientists. In particular, research is needed to better understand the chemical and physical properties of complex air pollutant mixtures, and to use new observations provided by satellites, advanced in situ measurement techniques, and distributed micro monitoring networks, coupled with models, to better characterize air pollution exposure for epidemiological and toxicological research, and to better quantify the effects of specific source sectors and mitigation strategies.
Exposure information in environmental health research: Current opportunities and future directions for particulate matter, ozone, and toxic air pollutants

Abstract:Understanding and quantifying outdoor and indoor sources of human exposure are essential but often not adequately addressed in health effect studies for air pollution. Air pollution epidemiology, risk assessment, health tracking, and accountability assessments are examples of health effect studies that require but often lack adequate exposure information. Recent advances in exposure modeling along with better information on time–activity and exposure factor data provide us with unique opportunities to improve the assignment of exposures for both future and ongoing studies linking air pollution to health impacts. In September 2006, scientists from the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention along with scientists from the academic community and state health departments convened a symposium on air pollution exposure and health to identify, evaluate, and improve current approaches for linking air pollution exposures to disease. This manuscript presents the key issues, challenges, and recommendations identified by the exposure working group, who used case studies of particulate matter, ozone, and toxic air-pollutant exposure to evaluate health effects for air pollution. One of the overarching lessons of this workshop is that obtaining better exposure information for these different health effect studies requires both goal setting for what is needed and mapping out the transition pathway from current capabilities for meeting these goals. Meeting our long-term goals requires definition of incremental steps that provide useful information for the interim and move us toward our long-term goals. Another overarching theme among the three different pollutants and the different health study approaches is the need for integration among alternate exposure-assessment approaches. For example, different groups may advocate exposure indicators, biomonitoring, mapping methods (GIS), modeling, environmental media monitoring, and/or personal exposure modeling. However, emerging research reveals that the greatest progress comes from integration among two or more of these efforts.

Abstract:Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

Abstract:There has been an increasing interest in evaluating health effects associated with multiple air pollutants. Identifying the critical factors driving the variation of multiple air pollutants and pollution caused the human health risk are still limited. We selected four typical cities as the study object in the Central Plains Urban Agglomeration (CPUA), China and collected the data of air pollutants, meteorological factors and social development factors over the two years. Our results showed that the air pollutants presented remarkable seasonal variations, according to the principal coordinate analysis (PCoA), the air pollution event often occurred in winter in the CPUA, and the air quality health index (AQHI) values were moderate risk for population health particularly in Zhengzhou and Anyang. The results of the correlation analysis and redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that air pollution and associated health risk was driven by human activities, and was influenced by dominant meteorological factors, such as, rainfall, vapor pressure, relative humidity. These indicated that the air pollution in the CPUA should make the pollutant emission plan according to the region and season to improve the air quality and protect the public health.

Abstract:Global climate change and rapid urbanization have brought unprecedented environmental challenges, especially in rapidly expanding cities like Xi'an, posing potential challenges to sustainable development if not accompanied by adequate greenery, thoughtful layouts, and pollution control measures. The increasing frequency and intensity of urban air pollution (e.g., PM2.5, PM10, O3) and extreme climate events (e.g., heatwaves) have heightened health risks for residents. Existing studies mostly focus on single pollution or climate factors, neglecting the compounded effects of these factors. To fill this research gap, this study presents a health risk assessment model, specifically by analyzing the compounded effects of heatwaves and air pollution. By integrating hazard, exposure, and vulnerability factors using the entropy weight–TOPSIS method, the results reveal significant spatial differences in health risks across various regions of Xi'an. The findings provide valuable guidance for urban planners and policymakers to better address environmental hazards, reduce health risks, and promote sustainable urban development.

The Air Pollution Human Health Burden in Different Future Scenarios That Involve the Mitigation of Near‐Term Climate Forcers, Climate and Land‐Use

Abstract:Elevated surface concentrations of ozone and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) can lead to poor air quality and detrimental impacts on human health. These pollutants are also termed Near‐Term Climate Forcers (NTCFs) as they can also influence the Earth's radiative balance on timescales shorter than long‐lived greenhouse gases. Here we use the Earth system model, UKESM1, to simulate the change in surface ozone and PM2.5 concentrations from different NTCF mitigation scenarios, conducted as part of the Aerosol and Chemistry Model Intercomparison Project (AerChemMIP). These are then combined with relative risk estimates and projected changes in population demographics, to estimate the mortality burden attributable to long‐term exposure to ambient air pollution. Scenarios that involve the strong mitigation of air pollutant emissions yield large future benefits to human health (25%), particularly across Asia for black carbon (7%), when compared to the future reference pathway. However, if anthropogenic emissions follow the reference pathway, then impacts to human health worsen over South Asia in the short term (11%) and across Africa (20%) in the longer term. Future climate change impacts on air pollutants can offset some of the health benefits achieved by emission mitigation measures over Europe for PM2.5 and East Asia for ozone. In addition, differences in the future chemical environment over regions are important considerations for mitigation measures to achieve the largest benefit to human health. Future policy measures to mitigate climate warming need to also consider the impact on air quality and human health across different regions to achieve the maximum co‐benefits.

Estimating Ground-Level Concentrations of Multiple Air Pollutants and Their Health Impacts in the Huaihe River Basin in China

Abstract:Air pollutants existing in the environment may have negative impacts on human health depending on their toxicity and concentrations. Remote sensing data enable researchers to map concentrations of various air pollutants over vast areas. By combining ground-level concentrations with population data, the spatial distribution of health impacts attributed to air pollutants can be acquired. This study took five highly populated and severely polluted provinces along the Huaihe River, China, as the research area. The ground-level concentrations of four major air pollutants including nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), sulfate dioxide (SO₂), particulate matters with diameter equal or less than 10 (PM10) or 2.5 micron (PM2.5) were estimated based on relevant remote sensing data using the geographically weighted regression (GWR) model. The health impacts of these pollutants were then assessed with the aid of co-located gridded population data. The results show that the annual average concentrations of ground-level NO₂, SO₂, PM10, and PM2.5 in 2016 were 31 µg/m³, 26 µg/m³, 100 µg/m³, and 59 µg/m³, respectively. In terms of the health impacts attributable to NO₂, SO₂, PM10, and PM2.5, there were 546, 1788, 10,595, and 8364 respiratory deaths, and 1221, 9666, 46,954, and 39,524 cardiovascular deaths, respectively. Northern Henan, west-central Shandong, southern Jiangsu, and Wuhan City in Hubei are prone to large health risks. Meanwhile, air pollutants have an overall greater impact on cardiovascular disease than respiratory disease, which is primarily attributable to the inhalable particle matters. Our findings provide a good reference to local decision makers for the implementation of further emission control strategies and possible health impacts assessment.

Abstract:As the largest developing country, China has been changing rapidly over the last three decades and its economic expansion is largely driven by the use of fossil fuels, which leads to a dramatic increase in emissions of both ambient air pollutants and greenhouse gases (GHGs). China is now facing the worst air pollution problem in the world, and is also the largest emitter of carbon dioxide. A number of epidemiological studies on air pollution and population health have been conducted in China, using time-series, case-crossover, cross-sectional, cohort, panel or intervention designs. The increased health risks observed among Chinese population are somewhat lower in magnitude, per amount of pollution, than the risks found in developed countries. However, the importance of these increased health risks is greater than that in North America or Europe, because the levels of air pollution in China are very high in general and Chinese population accounts for more than one fourth of the world's totals. Meanwhile, evidence is mounting that climate change has already affected human health directly and indirectly in China, including mortality from extreme weather events; changes in air and water quality; and changes in the ecology of infectious diseases. If China acts to reduce the combustion of fossil fuels and the resultant air pollution, it will reap not only the health benefits associated with improvement of air quality but also the reduced GHG emissions. Consideration of the health impact of air pollution and climate change can help the Chinese government move forward towards sustainable development with appropriate urgency.

Abstract:Intensive human activity has brought about unprecedented climate and environmental crises, in which concurrent heatwaves and ozone extremes pose the most serious threats. However, a limited understanding of the comprehensive mechanism hinders our ability to mitigate such compound events, especially in densely populated regions like China. Here, based on field observations and climate-chemistry coupled modelling, we elucidate the linkage between human activities and the climate system in heat-related ozone pollution. In China, we have observed that both the frequency and intensity of heatwaves have almost tripled since the beginning of this century. Moreover, these heatwaves are becoming more common in urban clusters with serious ozone pollution. Persistent heatwaves during the extremely hot and dry summers of 2013 and 2022 accelerated photochemical ozone production by boosting anthropogenic and biogenic emissions, and aggravated ozone accumulation by suppressing dry deposition due to water-stressed vegetation, leading to a more than 30% increase in ozone pollution in China's urban areas. The sensitivity of ozone to heat is demonstrated to be substantially modulated by anthropogenic emissions, and China's clean air policy may have altered the relationship between ozone and temperature. Climate model projections further highlight that the high-emission climate-socioeconomic scenario tends to intensify the concurrent heat and ozone extremes in the next century. Our results underscore that the implementation of a strict emission strategy will significantly reduce the co-occurrence of heatwaves and ozone extremes, achieving climate and environmental co-benefits.

Abstract:Significance Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) adversely impact human health and ecosystems and are known to persist in the atmosphere. Despite decades of research, the mechanisms by which these PAHs persist are not well understood. Here, we combine theory and laboratory and field measurements within a global climate model to produce new insights into mechanisms that are responsible for the observed persistence of PAHs. We show that temperature- and humidity-dependent variations in effective viscosity of organic aerosol (OA) shield PAHs from chemical degradation. This OA shielding results in higher PAH concentrations at both near-urban and remote locations, leading to a fourfold increase in global lung cancer risk. Our study represents new research frontiers in terms of connecting climate-relevant OA with health-relevant PAHs.
Health and equity implications of individual adaptation to air pollution in a changing climate

Abstract:Future climate change can cause more days with poor air quality. This could trigger more alerts telling people to stay inside to protect themselves, with potential consequences for health and health equity. Here, we study the change in US air quality alerts over this century due to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), who they may affect, and how they may respond. We find air quality alerts increase by over 1 mo per year in the eastern United States by 2100 and quadruple on average. They predominantly affect areas with high Black populations and leakier homes, exacerbating existing inequalities and impacting those less able to adapt. Reducing emissions can offer significant annual health benefits ($5,400 per person) by mitigating the effect of climate change on air pollution and its associated risks of early death. Relying on people to adapt, instead, would require them to stay inside, with doors and windows closed, for an extra 142 d per year, at an average cost of $11,000 per person. It appears likelier, however, that people will achieve minimal protection without policy to increase adaptation rates. Boosting adaptation can offer net benefits, even alongside deep emission cuts. New adaptation policies could, for example: reduce adaptation costs; reduce infiltration and improve indoor air quality; increase awareness of alerts and adaptation; and provide measures for those working or living outdoors. Reducing emissions, conversely, lowers everyone's need to adapt, and protects those who cannot adapt. Equitably protecting human health from air pollution under climate change requires both mitigation and adaptation.
