Abstract:To improve the safety properties of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20), the composite particle of CL-20/EPDM energetic particles were prepared by an electrostatic spray method. The surface morphology of the composite was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystal structure of the composite was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The thermal decomposition properties of the composite were also analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The safety properties were judged by mechanical sensitivity test. The SEM results revealed that the prepared composite was homogeneous with mean granularity of 1 mu m and the morphology was distinct from raw CL-20 and EPDM, which is nearly spherical. The FTIR and XRD analysis indicated that the new crystalline formation appeared in the composite. The crystal form of CL-20 changed from epsilon to alpha. At 8 K.min(-1), the peak temperature decreased 248.9 degrees C to 237.8 degrees C, and the apparent activation energy decreased from 255.1 kJ.mol(-1) to 241.3 kJ.mol(-1), which was only 13.8 kJ.mol(-1) lower than CL-20, indicating that the thermal stability of the composite microspheres was close to that of raw CL-20. The decrease of critical temperature of thermal explosion from 228.4 degrees C to 223.4 degrees C indicates the improvement of thermal sensitivity. The impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity of CL-20/EPDM composite were reduced compared to raw CL-20. The value of H-50 of the composite is 20 cm, which increased by 6.4 cm compared with raw CL-20. And the explosion probability of the composite is reduced to 80%, compared with 100% of the raw CL-20, indicating the better safety properties.

Abstract:The sensitivity of energetic materials to external stimuli (mechanical, flame, etc.) limits their practical application. In order to improve the safety of HMX@PDA composite materials. In this study, HMX/DAAF@PDA composite microspheres with different mass ratios were prepared using a microfluidic self-assembly strategy, and the morphology, size, crystal structure, thermal behavior, flowability and mechanical sensitivity of the sample microspheres were analyzed. The results showed that the addition of DAAF did not change the crystal structure of the composites, and the HMX/DAAF@PDA composite microspheres showed high consistency and repeatability, concentrated particle size distribution, sphericity greater than 0.9 and good flowability. Meanwhile, the impact sensitivity of the sample was increased from 25 J to 50 J (S-3) and the friction sensitivity was increased from 160 N to 216 N. In addition, the ignition experiment and EXPLO5 calculation results show that the addition of insensitive DAAF can reduce the combustion of composite materials, thereby improving the application safety of the composites. This study provides a way for the design and preparation of high-energy insensitive composite explosives.

Abstract:epsilon-CL-20 based PBXs with high energy and reduced sensitivity are prepared and characterized for the first time. Their thermal decomposition behaviour, mechanical sensitivities and detonation properties are studied. Results show that the prepared epsilon-CL-20 based PBXs have a detonation velocity higher than 9100 m.s(-1) and acceptable insensitivity. DSC, TG and ARC are used to evaluate the thermal decomposition kinetic parameters, which are in good agreement with those obtained from AKTS thermokinetics program incorporated with TG data.
Design and Preparation of a Novel Nano-Composite Coating for Desensitization of CL-20

Abstract:Although 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) is one of the best high-energy explosives, its application is severely limited by its high sensitivity. Herein, a composite wax-film with interfacial crosslinking anti-falling was designed and fabricated to desensitize CL-20. It was filled with nano-silica powder (n-Si), nano-graphenes (n-GPNs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as insensitive en-hancers. A unique and stable core-shell composite explosive was prepared, and characterized by DSC, SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS as well as mechanical sensitivity tests. The results suggested that the functional group interaction and structural strengthening between enhancers and microcrystalline wax (MW) further enhanced the desensitization ability of the composite film for CL-20. Because of the hydrogen bonding and thickening enhancement, the CL-20 crystal was uniformly coated with a nano-composite film. Three enhancers were demonstrated to be highly compatible with CL-20. In comparison with MW@CL-20, The Ea, T-p0 and T-b of the composites containing n-GPNs increased by >375.27 kJ & sdot;mol(- 1), 21.04 C-degrees and 18.27 C-degrees, respectively. The SEM and XPS results showed that the composite performed a complete core-shell structure with thermal softening resistance and superior coverage (98.20 %). The insensitive enhancer was also distributed and embedded in the MW-film matrix. Besides, the anti-fall and cross-linking properties of the film enable the mechanical sensitivity of the composite explosive to reach to a level better than that of WO3/Al nanothermite with 5 wt% polyaniline and polymer-bonded explosive (PBX) with 95 wt% LLM-105 and 5 wt% ternary composite. The heterogeneous composites demonstrated excellent mechanical safety and high energy performance. These findings can provide a reference for the efficient desensitization of CL-20.

Abstract:Improved controllability and energy density of ignition agents are of great significance for the development of energetic composite materials. In this study, droplet microfluidics and emulsification techniques were combined to prepare HNS/CL-20 composite microspheres with polyglycidyl azide polymer (GAP) as the binder. The influence of binder content on the morphology of microspheres was investigated, and the microspheres were characterized and tested for particle size, crystal structure, thermal decomposition, dispersibility, mechanical sensitivity, combustion behavior and detonation performance. The results showed that microspheres prepared with a binder content of 3% had higher sphericity and particle size uniformity. The microspheres retained the crystal structure of both HNS and CL-20 (ε-type). Compared with raw HNS, the microspheres had higher apparent activation energy, better safety performance, and good dispersibility. The ignition experiments and detonation performance tests show that HNS/CL-20 composite microspheres have excellent ignition performance, obvious combustion flame, and significant energy release effects, which are expected to achieve high energy and high-speed response of the igniter, thus improving the ignition reliability in special environments or systems.

Abstract:In order to reduce the mechanical sensitivity of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX) and improve its energy density, spherical RDX/PMMA/NC composite particles were prepared by spray drying method, selecting polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, hydrocarbon binder) with excellent mechanical properties and nitrocellulose (NC, energy-containing binder) with higher density as the desensitizing shell material, RDX as the core material. PMMA/NC composite particles of the same component were prepared by a simple solvent evaporation method at the same time. Structural characterizations and thermal stability of the composites were systematically studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), respectively. Moreover, the safety performance has been qualitatively tested and analyzed through impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity. The results show that the addition of NC/PMMA binder would not change the original crystal structure of RDX, and the RDX/NC/PMMA composites fabricated by spray drying presented spherical particles with uniform distribution and smooth surface. The Tp0 of RDX/NC/PMMA composite particles increased from 220.3°C to 228.2°C, improving the thermal decomposition performance. The H50 rose from 29.32 cm to 84.3 cm, and the probability of friction explosion decreased from 96% to 8%, significantly enhancing the safety performance. In short, the RDX/NC/PMMA composites prepared via the spray drying method and the improvement of their performance have positive significance for the development of explosives in pursuit of high energy and low sensitivity.

Precise Regulation of Combustion Characteristics of High-Energy Composite Propellants by Incorporation of CL-20 Crystals Intercalated with Energetic Burn Rate Modifiers

Abstract:In this study, a 2D structured triaminoguanidine-glyoxal polymer with a high nitrogen content has been coordinated with metal ions to produce energetic metal complexes (TAGP-Ms) employed as energetic burn rate inhibitors. The metal ions (Ba2+, K+, and Ca2+) are elaborately selected based on their ability of suppressing the burn rate of composite propellants. The CL-20 crystals were intercalated with prepared TAGP-Ms materials via a solvent-antisolvent method for realization of the precise control on burning behaviors of studied propellants. The influence of TAGP-Ms inhibitors on thermal decomposition and combustion characteristics of high-energy composite propellants was evaluated using thermal analysis and a combustion diagnostic method. Results of TGA/DSC-FTIR measurements suggest that the thermal decomposition of CL-20-containing composite propellants was found to be constrained by varied degrees as a result of TAGP-Ms additions, in which the TAGP-K displays a stronger effect on suppressing the thermal decomposition of CL-20 compared with that of other TAGP-Ms. The FTIR spectra indicate that the primary gaseous phase products are composed of N2O, H2O, and CO2 in CL-20 decomposition, as well as by HCl, H2O, NO2, and N2O in the decomposition of AP for all studied composite propellants. The combustion characterizations show that the TAGP-K-containing composite propellant exhibits a significantly reduced rate of heat release but is associated with a higher flame radiation intensity increased by 4.2% compared with that of the reference propellant, which clearly implies that the TAGP-K is capable of suppressing the energy release rate while ensuring the high energetic features of propellants to be well maintained. Moreover, the burn rate pressure exponents are considerably decreased by ∼10% for the TAGP-K-containing propellants in comparison with those of propellants with the typical formulation, which strongly suggests that TGAP-Ms are promising candidates for tuning the combustion behaviors of composite propellants by influencing the decomposition processes of CL-20 and AP collectively.

Abstract:The explosive/desensitizer interface is the key to the safety and mechanical properties of polymer bonded explosive (PBX). Herein, a mortise-tenon-style bonded-insensitive interface composed of dopamine-containing polyurethane (TPU-PDA)@desensitizer was designed and fabricated to augment the interfacial performance of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20). The composite explosives were characterized by SEM, TG-DSC, XPS, XRD, mechanical sensitivity tester and inclined chute tester. The mortise-tenon coating enabled CL-20 to be coated more uniform and smooth. The TPU-PDA@microcrystalline wax (MW) elevated the T p0 and T b of CL-20 from 218.15°C and 220.27°C to 221.11°C and 222.38°C, respectively. The XRD results indicated that the crystal phases of the four composite particles were consistent with that of CL-20, suggesting that the coating process did not induce any crystal phases transformation of CL-20. Most importantly, The TPU-PDA@aqueous polyurethane (ATPU) film reduced the mechanical sensitivity of CL-20 from 60 N and 3.5 J to exceeding 252 N and 12.5 J. The TPU-PDA@polypropylene wax (PPW) films could impart composite explosive with friction sensitivity more than 360 N, comparable to that of WO 3 /Al nanothermite. These improvement allows for the handling of PBX using conventional protocols. Additionally, the electrostatic charge accumulation and free-running abilities of composite explosive were significantly weakened. The polyvinyl chloride (PVC) was identified as a more fitting contact material for raw CL-20, while red copper was found to be better suited for insensitive particles. These discoveries offer valuable insights for the extensive utilization of CL-20.

Abstract:Hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (HBNNSs) have huge potential in the field of coating materials owing to their remarkable chemical stability, mechanical strength and thermal conductivity. Thin-layer hBNNSs were obtained by a liquid-phase exfoliation of h-BN powders and incorporated into EVA coatings for improving the safety performance of 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX). HBNNSs and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) were introduced to HMX by a solvent-slurry process. For comparison, the HMX/EVA and HMX/EVA/graphene (HMX/EVA/G) composites were also prepared by a similar process. The morphology, crystal form, surface element distribution, thermal decomposition property and impact sensitivity of HMX/EVA/hBNNSs composites were contrastively investigated. Results showed that as prepared HMX/EVA/hBNNSs composites were well coated with hBNNSs and EVA, and exhibited better thermal stability and lower impact sensitivity than that of HMX/EVA and HMX/EVA/G composites, suggesting superior performance of desensitization of hBNNSs in explosives.

Abstract:The encapsulation of pyrotechnic binder on the α‐AlH3 surface by a solvent/antisolvent method is a means to address its stability and safety, laying the foundation for its application in solid propellants. Alpha‐aluminum hydride (α‐AlH3) is an ideal energetic combustion agent, but its poor stability and safety limit its application. Therefore, we prepare different composites by using the solvent/anti‐solvent method to coat different pyrotechnic binders on the surface of α‐AlH3. The vacuum stability test show that the minimum outgassing of Shellac‐coated α‐AlH3 composite is only 1.2 mL/g at 50 °C for 6 days. Due to the good electrical insulation properties of Viton, Viton‐coated α‐AlH3 composite have the highest E50 value of electrostatic sensitivity. In addition, the pyrotechnic binders coating not only protects the activity of the α‐AlH3 but also effectively increases its burning rate. Viton‐coated α‐AlH3 composite have more gaseous products and maximum flame area during combustion. This study illustrates that α‐AlH3 coated with pyrotechnic binders is a means to address its stability and safety, laying the foundation for its application in solid propellants.

Preparation of Core-Shell Composite Materials Containing Ultra-Fine AP

Abstract:The ultra-fine HMX,AP,CL-20 and Al-FPM2602 core-shell composite materials were prepared by supercritical anti-solvent(SAS) method.Mixtures of ultra-fine HMX,AP,CL-20 and Al were coated by FPM2602 precipitated on the surface of mixtures.Hygroscopic test of the core-shell composite materials coated with and without FPM2602 shows the anti-hydroscopicity of the core-shell composite materials have obviously improved,which indicates that there is FPM2602 on the surface of the mixtures.The impact sensitivity,flame sensitivity and explosion temperature of five seconds delay of the core-shell composite materials were carried out,The results show that compared with uncoated materials,the properties of the core-shell composite materials were improved to a certain extent.SAS technology is an effective method of preparing the ultra-fine composite materials without any pollution.
The GO Composite Coatings for Enhancing Interfacial Interaction Performance and Desensitization of CL-20

Abstract:Although CL-20 is one of the most widely used high-explosives, the issue of its high sensibility and interfacial interaction with coating material in composite explosives have not yet been well understood. Herein, the electrostatic self-assembly capability of a graphene oxide (GO) aqueous solution was utilized to desensitize CL-20 and enhance its interfacial interaction by preparing a CL-20@GO@desensitizer composite, which was prepared by the “one-pot” water suspension method. It was found that the CL-20@GO composite exhibited a compact GO cladding layer and demonstrated exceptional safety characteristics. On this basis, the structure and performance of three CL-20@GO@densitizer composites were characterized by SEM, XPS, ZETA, DSC, XRD, and mechanical sensitivity. The morphology of composites showed that GO@microcrystalline wax (MW) was evenly coated on the surface of CL-20 under the influence of ionic charge and -OH bonding. The surface analysis results indicated that three types of GO@desensitizer films possessed exceptional coating effectiveness. The thermal analyses results suggested that the CL-20@GO@ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) endowed Ea of composite up to 351.43 kJ/mol, while, the Ea of CL-20@GO, CL-20@GO@MW and CL-20@GO@MW + EPDM were only 184.36 kJ/mol, 186.21 kJ/mol and 258.79 kJ/mol, respectively. Besides, the XRD results confirmed that the three films had not caused a transformation of the CL-20 crystal phase, which afforded process safety support for the further application of this composite particle. Due to the high thermal conductivity of desensitizer-film, the composite showed a advantage in mechanical sensitivity, which can reach to a level of 252 N and 10 J. These findings can provide a reference for enhancing surface performance and desensitization of CL-20.
Reactivity Control of Oxidative CL-20@PVDF Composite Microspheres by Using Carbon Nanomaterials as Catalysts

Abstract:2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (CL-20) is one of the high-energy oxidants, but has limited application due to its high sensitivity. In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) was used as a co-oxidizer, which is expected to increase the safety of CL-20. One kind of novel graphene-based carbohydrazide complex (GCCo and GCNi) was employed to modify the properties of dual-oxidant CL-20@PVDF composites by the spray drying method and compared with traditional nanocarbon materials (CNTs and GO). The properties of these composites were investigated using the TGA/DSC technique and impact test. The results show that GCCo and GCNi could increase the activation energy (Ea) of CL-20@PVDF composites, and change the physical model of CL-20@PVDF, which followed the random chain scission model and then the first-order reaction model. In addition, these nanocarbon materials could reduce the impact sensitivity of CL-20@PVDF by their unique structure. Besides that, a dual-oxidant CL-20@PVDF system was used to improve the combustion property of Boron. GCCo and GCNi with the synergetic effect could increase the flame temperature and control the burn rate of CL-20@PVDF@B compared with CNTs and GO. The energetic nanocarbon catalyst-modified oxidant provides a facile method for stabilizing high-energy but sensitive materials to broaden their application.
Preparation and safety study of TKX-50/CL-20 composite explosives

Abstract:CL-20, as the best comprehensive high nitrogen energetic material, plays an important role in weaponry, equipment, and national defense. TKX-50, as a new type of ionic explosive, is commonly used for composite explosives due to its excellent desensitization effect. This work combines TKX-50 and CL-20, and then encapsulates them using demulsification method. TKX-50/CL-20 composite explosives were successfully prepared at the binder dosage of only 1.5 wt.%, which showed good encapsulation effects. The results showed that the Polyvinyl butyraldehyde (PVB) and wax were successfully coated on the surface of the explosive particles, and the crystal structure of CL-20 in the composite did not change, while the excellent detonation property of ε -CL-20 is retained. Our study found that TKX-50 has a catalytic effect on the decomposition of CL-20, and when mixed alone, the activation energy of CL-20 is significantly reduced. Furthermore, the activation energy of the TKX-50/CL-20 composite explosive prepared has hardly changed compared to CL-20, and it has better thermal stability compared to TKX-50/CL-20 (1:1). The impact sensitivity and friction sensitivity of TKX-50/CL-20 composite explosives have also been significantly improved, with 2 J and 96 N higher than the TKX-50/CL-20 (1:1) raw materials, respectively, demonstrating good desensitization effect.

Abstract:Safety performance under external stimuli plays a crucial role for energetic materials. Therefore, desensitization of high explosive arouses widespread research interests in the field of energetic materials. Nevertheless, synergistically reducing impact and electrostatic spark sensitivities of 1,3,5,7-tetranittro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) remains challenging. Herein, a novel strategy concerning conductive polymer coating was proposed to solve this issue. Theoretically, the polypyrrole (PPy) can form a complete shell and strong interaction with HMX crystals. The HMX@PPy composite has been successfully achieved by in-situ polymerization, exhibiting superior sensitivities (impact: from 7 J to 27.5 J and electrostatic spark: from 0.4 J to 1.68 J) among reported HMX-based energetic materials. In addition, the thermal phase stability of HMX can also be visibly improved with sluggish phase-transition kinetics by introducing PPy coating. The current study provides a design concept for high energy explosives with low sensitivity and improved comprehensive performances.

Characterization and Properties of F2602/GAP/CL-20 Energetic Fibers with High Energy and Low Sensitivity Prepared by the Electrospinning Method

Abstract:In this work, three samples of fluoroelastomers/glycidyl azide polymer/hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (F-2602/GAP/CL-20) energetic fibers with F-2602/GAP:CL-20 ratios of 1:9, 2:8, and 3:7 were prepared by the electrospinning method. The morphologies and structures of the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results revealed that F-2602/GAP/CL-20 energetic fibers showed a three-dimensional network structure, and four elements C, N, O, and F were observed on the surface. The surface of the fiber F-2602/GAP:CL-20 = 1:9 was uniform and smooth. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to analyze the thermal decomposition properties of the samples. The apparent activation energy of the F-2602/GAP/CL-20 energetic fiber was 399.86 kJ/mol, indicating high thermal stability. TG-MS analysis results show that the thermal decomposition products of F-2602/GAP/CL-20 are mainly C2H6, H2O, N-2, and CO2. The results of the energy performance evaluation showed that the standard specific impulse (I-sp) of F-2602/GAP/CL-20 was 2668.1 N s kg(-1), which was remarkably higher than I-sp of the state-of-the-art AP/HTPB/Al propellant. In addition, compared to that of CL-20, the friction sensitivity of one F-2602/GAP/CL-20 sample decreased by 38%, and the sensitivities of the other two F-2602/GAP/CL-20 samples were even less than zero. F-2602/GAP/CL-20 fibers also exhibited a higher feature height. Therefore, these kinds of CL-20-based fibers are high-energy materials with very low sensitivity.

Abstract:The reduction of interfacial interaction and the deterioration of mechanical properties by the introduction of the indispensable paraffin wax is a long-standing problem. To address it, a novel litchi-like core-shell 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX)@paraffin wax@polydopamine (PDA) structure was constructed with a new high melting point paraffin wax (HPW, 101.9 °C) as the inner shell and the bio-inspired strong adhesive PDA as the exterior shell. The evolution of element states on the surface of energetic microcapsules conducted by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the successful introduction of paraffin wax and PDA to form the core@double shell structure. Compared with the core@double shell particles based on the conventional low melting point paraffin wax (LPW, 69.8 °C), the HMX@HPW@PDA particles demonstrated a 120% increase of impact energy EBAM from 5 J (raw HMX) to 11 J by Bundesanstalt für Materialprüfung (BAM) method. Attributed to the stronger interfacial interaction, the litchi-like core-shell HMX@paraffin wax@PDA based energetic composites also exhibited much superior mechanical properties than that of the corresponding HMX@paraffin wax based ones and could be equaled to or even higher than that of the raw HMX based ones. In addition, the β-δ phase transition temperature of HMX in HMX@HPW@PDA crystals was improved by 11.3 °C than that of raw HMX. The simplicity and scalability of the described approach provided a creative opportunity for design and fabrication of energetic composites with high safety performance and mechanical properties.

Abstract:The desensitizing effect of morphology of LLM-105 particles on HMX was studied,and binder system and desensitizer system for formulation based on HMX and LLM-105 were selected.A formulation based on HMX and LLM-105 was designed.The safety of the new formulation was characterized with friction,impact sensitivity and shock sensitivity,and the plate dent test and cylinder test were conducted to characterize its performances.The results indicate that LLM-105 can be used in main charge as an energetic desensitizer.The HMX-based PBX containing LLM-105 has high energy which detonation velocity is above 8700m/s and detonation pressure is more than 34GPa,and specific dynamic energy is above 1.560kJ/g,the shock sensitivity is ten percent less than that of JOB-9003 explosive.This formulation is a new style low sensitive high energy explosive.

Abstract:Nano HMX was prepared by the ball milling method .The particle size distribution was analyzed by a laser particle size analyzer .At the same time ,the particle size and the morphology of nano HMX were character-ized through SEM .The thermal decomposition features and thermal stability of nano HMX were examined by a TG/DSC .Furthermore ,the explosion temperature in five seconds and the sensitivities of nano HMX were also tested .It was found that most of the particles were below 100 nm .The maximum weight loss temperature ,the apparent acti-vation energy Ea ,the self-ignition temperature and the explosion temperature in five seconds were lower than those of raw HMX by 3 4.6℃ ,11 1.9 kJ/mol ,2 1.1K and 4 9.℃ respectively .The electrostatic sensitivity and the sensitivity to flame of nano HMX were the same as raw HMX .The friction ,impact and shock sensitivities of nano HMX were decreased by 28% ,20 2.% and 56 4.% ,respec-tively .
