Abstract:Fruits have a significant impact on human health due to the mineral substances and vitamins that they contain. Among agricultural activities globally and within Türkiye, fruit cultivation is of great importance. In this study, the energy analyses of wolfberries, grapes, pomegranates, and strawberries grown in different countries were evaluated, and the energy efficiency parameters were compared for different countries to improve berry fruit production. The energy parameters in fruit growing include transportation, water, organic fertilizer, farmyard manure, diesel oil/oil, agricultural machinery, animal labor, human labor, electricity, organic chemicals, biocides, chemical fertilizers, seeds, biochemicals, and plastics. Water use, one of the energy analysis parameters, was found to be highest in strawberries grown in greenhouses, with 24,353.30 MJ/ha and the lowest was found in pomegranates, with 35.80 MJ/ha. The highest diesel/oil parameter usage, with an amount of 805,178.20 MJ/ha, was in strawberries grown in greenhouses. The lowest amount was determined in pomegranates, with 1224.90 MJ/ha. The energy input for agricultural machinery was calculated as 18,384.03 MJ/ha in strawberry production in open fields, and the lowest was calculated as 130.48 MJ/ha for the same fruit. In the energy analysis, the highest human labor parameter with an amount of 35,338.86 MJ/ha was found for strawberries produced in greenhouses. The lowest amount was found in grape production, with 205.68 MJ/ha.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the paper attempts to solve This paper aims to compare the energy - use efficiency of four kinds of berries (wolfberries, grapes, pomegranates and strawberries) produced in Turkey and other countries. Specifically, the research evaluates the energy - efficiency parameters of these production activities by analyzing the energy inputs and outputs in the berry - production processes in different countries, and explores how to improve the sustainability of berry production by optimizing energy use. ### Research background Fruits play an important role in global and Turkish agricultural production because they are rich in minerals and vitamins beneficial to human health. Due to its geographical location, Turkey has a very suitable climate for growing various fruits, except for tropical plants. Therefore, Turkey is considered the origin of horticulture and the homeland of many globally - planted fruit species. Although the agricultural sector is not the largest energy consumer, the energy consumption of the agricultural sector is still large due to a variety of processes including tilling, sowing, weeding, irrigation, fertilizing, harvesting, transporting and drying. As these processes are modernized, energy consumption also increases. ### Research purposes 1. **Evaluate the energy - use situation in berry production in different countries**: The research analyzes various energy inputs involved in the production processes of wolfberries, grapes, pomegranates and strawberries in different countries, including transportation, water, organic fertilizers, farmyard manure, diesel / oil, agricultural machinery, animal labor, human labor, electricity, organic chemicals, pesticides, chemical fertilizers, seeds, biochemicals and plastics. 2. **Compare the energy - efficiency parameters in different countries**: By calculating the ratio of total energy output to total energy input, evaluate the energy - use efficiency of berry production in different countries. 3. **Optimize the energy use in berry production**: By identifying high - energy - consumption links, propose methods to reduce energy consumption and improve energy - use efficiency, in order to achieve more sustainable agricultural production and environmental protection. ### Main findings - **Water use**: The water - energy consumption of greenhouse - grown strawberries is the highest, reaching 24,353.30 MJ/ha, while that of pomegranates is the lowest, only 35.80 MJ/ha. - **Diesel / oil use**: The diesel / oil - energy consumption of greenhouse - grown strawberries is the highest, reaching 805,178.20 MJ/ha, while that of pomegranates is the lowest, only 1224.90 MJ/ha. - **Use of agricultural machinery**: The agricultural - machinery - energy consumption of open - field - grown strawberries is the highest, being 18,384.03 MJ/ha, while the lowest value for the same fruit is 130.48 MJ/ha. - **Human labor**: The human - labor - energy consumption of greenhouse - grown strawberries is the highest, reaching 35,338.86 MJ/ha, while that of grapes is the lowest, only 205.68 MJ/ha. ### Conclusion By comparing the energy - use situations in berry production in different countries, the research finds that optimizing energy use can significantly improve the energy efficiency of berry production, thus promoting sustainable agricultural development, reducing environmental pollution and lowering production costs. In particular, higher energy - use efficiency can be achieved by reducing the energy use in high - energy - consumption links.
