Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained significant attention in recent years due to their exceptional adaptability and maneuverability. This paper investigates the three-dimensional (3D) deployment of UAVs equipped with visible light communication (VLC) capabilities, aiming to maximize the sum data rate. To this end, the system model is established and an efficient algorithm is proposed, with detailed analyses of the computational complexity. Besides, the simulation results indicate the proposed method achieves the best performance in both the sum data rate and the coverage ratio, compared to existing UAV deployment algorithms. Moreover, the effects of both the shot noise induced by the periodic solar radiation and the attenuation of optical signals are also discussed.

Abstract:Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been utilized to extend the coverage and capacity of terrestrial wireless networks. In such a UAV-aided wireless network, we can exploit the more favorable line-of-sight (LOS) propagation in the UAV-user wireless link to achieve better coverage and higher capacity. Furthermore, the flexible deployment of UAVs makes them ideal for catering to ad hoc demand. Due to the lack of fixed-line backhaul, UAVs act like relays with wireless backhaul links in UAV-aided wireless networks. Unlike the conventional relays in terrestrial wireless networks, the positions of UAV-Rs can be optimized to maximize the system performance. Although the optimal UAV positioning problem has been studied under simple LOS/probabilistic channel models, the joint optimization of UAV positions, user association, and wireless backhaul capacity allocation remains unsolved under realistic channel models, which will be addressed in this paper. The joint optimization problem is a challenging mixed non-convex and combinatorial problem. Combining the block coordinate descent and successive convex approximation (SCA) methods, we propose a sparse parallel block SCA algorithm, which can find a near-optimal solution by exploiting the structures of the propagation model. The simulations verify the significant gain of the proposed solution over existing solutions.

Abstract:Thanks to the flexible deployment, mobility and low cost, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) will be widely used in civil and military scenarios. In this paper, a flying network in the sky is considered, where multiple aerial source nodes are equipped with sensing devices to explore the environment and transmit the collected information to the ground station for data fusion and processing. However, there exists distance restriction due to the signal attenuation. Therefore, a UAV is deployed as a flying relay to provide wireless connection. Firstly, we design a time-division multiple access scheme to satisfy the rate requirements. Secondly, to maximize the system throughput under the no-fly zones, flying speed and available energy constraints, we optimize the time, power and flying trajectory. Then we decompose it into three subproblems. To reduce computational complexity, we optimize the power allocation and flying trajectory by applying the Lagrange dual decomposition and the alternating direction method of multipliers, respectively. In conclusion, an overall algorithm is proposed to iteratively optimize these three variables. In the end, we obtain the solution and the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
Optimal Resource Allocation for Multi-UAV Assisted Visible Light Communication

Abstract:In this paper, the optimization of deploying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over a reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-assisted visible light communication (VLC) system is studied. In the considered model, UAVs are required to simultaneously provide wireless services as well as illumination for ground users. To meet the traffic and illumination demands of the ground users while minimizing the energy consumption of the UAVs, one must optimize UAV deployment, phase shift of RISs, user association and RIS association. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem whose goal is to minimize the transmit power of UAVs via adjusting UAV deployment, phase shift of RISs, user association and RIS association. To solve this problem, the original optimization problem is divided into four subproblems and an alternating algorithm is proposed. Specifically, phases alignment method and semidefinite program (SDP) algorithm are proposed to optimize the phase shift of RISs. Then, the UAV deployment optimization is solved by the successive convex approximation (SCA) algorithm. Since the problems of user association and RIS association are integer programming, the fraction relaxation method is adopted before using dual method to find the optimal solution. For simplicity, a greedy algorithm is proposed as an alternative to optimize RIS association. The proposed two schemes demonstrate the superior performance of 34:85 energy consumption reduction over the case without RIS, respectively, through extensive numerical study.

Abstract:A major hurdle in widespread deployment of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicle) in existing communications infrastructure is the limited UAV onboard energy. Therefore, this study considers solar energy harvesting UAVs for wireless communications. In this context, we consider three dimensional position optimization of a solar-powered UAV relay that connects a distant sensor field to an optical ground station (OGS) for data processing. The integrated sensor-UAV-OGS network utilizes radio frequency band for sensor-to-UAV links and the optical band for the UAV-to-OGS feeder link. Since atmospheric conditions affect both the harvested solar energy as well as the optical wireless signal, this study tackles UAV position optimization problems under various channel conditions such as clouds, atmospheric turbulence and dirt. From this study, we discover that the optimum position of the UAV -- that maximizes the end-to-end channel capacity -- is heavily dependent on the atmospheric channel conditions.

Joint Optimization of 3D Placement and Radio Resource Allocation for per-UAV Sum Rate Maximization

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have emerged as a practical solution that provides on-demand services to users in areas where the terrestrial network is non-existent or temporarily unavailable, e.g., due to natural disasters or network congestion. In general, UAVs' user-serving capacity is typically constrained by their limited battery life and the finite communication resources that highly impact their performance. This work considers the orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) enabled multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (multi-UAV) communication systems to provide on-demand services. The main aim of this work is to derive an efficient technique for the allocation of radio resources, $3$D placement of UAVs, and user association matrices. To achieve the desired objectives, we decoupled the original joint optimization problem into two sub-problems: (i) $3$D placement and user association and (ii) sum-rate maximization for optimal radio resource allocation, which are solved iteratively. The proposed iterative algorithm is shown via numerical results to achieve fast convergence speed after fewer than 10 iterations. The benefits of the proposed design are demonstrated via superior sum-rate performance compared to existing reference designs. Moreover, results showed that the optimal power and sub-carrier allocation help to mitigate the inter-cell interference that directly impacts the system's performance.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of the deployment and resource management for visible light communication (VLC)-enabled, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs)-assisted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) networks is investigated. In the considered model, UAVs provide terrestrial users with wireless services and illumination simultaneously. Moreover, RISs are utilized to further improve the channel quality between UAVs and users. This joint placement and resource management problem is constructed aiming at acquiring the optimal UAV deployment, RISs phase shift, user and RIS association that satisfies the users’ needs with minimum consumption of the UAVs’ energy. An iterative algorithm that alternately optimizes continuous and binary variables is proposed to solve this mixed-integer programming problem. Specifically, RISs phase shift optimization is solved by phases alignment method and semidefinite program algorithm. Next, the successive convex approximation algorithm is proposed to settle the UAV deployment problem. The user and RIS association variables are relaxed to the continuous ones before adopting the dual method to find the optimal solution. Moreover, a greedy algorithm is proposed as an alternative to RIS association optimization with low complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed two schemes harvest the superior performance of 34.85% and 32.11% energy consumption reduction over the case without RIS, respectively.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, have become a new paradigm to provide emergency wireless communication infrastructure when conventional base stations are damaged or unavailable. In this paper, we propose new schemes to enable the 3D deployment of drones, which can provide network coverage and connectivity services for users located in uneven terrain. We formalize two models, including optimal coverage model and optimal connectivity model, which belong to NP-hard. To be specific, we first consider both the quality of service (QoS) requirements of users and the capacity of drones. We then formalize the problem and design a heuristic scheme, called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to achieve a cost-effective solution. We also address the optimal connectivity problem in a scenario, in which a number of isolated local networks have been established by users through ad hoc communication and/or device-to-device (D2D) communication. We further develop the cost-effective heuristic algorithm to effectively minimize the total number of required drones. Via extensive performance evaluation, our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed schemes can achieve the effective deployment of drones for users in uneven terrain with respect to the number of required drones.
Secure and Energy-efficient Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-enabled Visible Light Communication via A Multi-objective Optimization Approach

Abstract:In this research, a unique approach to provide communication service for terrestrial receivers via using unmanned aerial vehicle-enabled visible light communication is investigated. Specifically, we take into account a unmanned aerial vehicle-enabled visible light communication scenario with multiplex transmitters, multiplex receivers, and a single eavesdropper, each of which is equipped with a single photodetector. Then, a unmanned aerial vehicle deployment multi-objective optimization problem is formulated to simultaneously make the optical power received by receiving surface more uniform, minimize the amount of information collected by a eavesdropper, and minimize the energy consumption of unmanned aerial vehicles, while the locations and transmission power of unmanned aerial vehicles are simultaneously optimized under certain constraints. Since the formulated unmanned aerial vehicle deployment multi-objective optimization problem is complex and nonlinear, it is challenging to be tackled by using conventional methods. For the purpose of solving the problem, a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition with chaos initiation and crossover mutation is proposed. Simulation outcomes show that the proposed approach is superior to other approaches, and is efficient at improving the security and energy efficiency of visible light communication system.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be flexibly deployed to offload cellular traffic or to provide video services for emergency scenarios without infrastructure. However, the inherent resource allocation and three-dimensional (3D) aerial trajectory design have not been formally studied. In this paper, we study the joint resource allocation and 3D aerial trajectory design for dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH)-enabled services in a UAV communication system, where a UAV is employed as a base station for multiuser video streaming. Various factors are taken into account, including video data rate, quality variation, communication outage, play interruption, etc. By adopting a video streaming utility model, two fundamental problems are formulated with different practical aims: the first problem maximizes the minimum utility for all users within a given time horizon such that max-min fairness can be provided, and the second problem minimizes the UAV operation time subject to the individual utility requirement for all users to prolong UAV endurance. To tackle the first non-convex problem, we decouple it into three sub-problems, and a three-stage iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution by solving the three sub-problems with successive convex approximation and alternating optimization techniques. An exponential search based algorithm is proposed for the second problem by utilizing the structure of the considered problem and a similar three-stage iterative algorithm. Extensive simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance, and the results show that our proposed designs significantly outperform baseline schemes. Furthermore, our results reveal new insights of UAV movement for video streaming and unveil the tradeoff between utility and quality variance.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication provides a promising solution to emergency recovery and coverage extension. For Internet of Things (IoT) communications system, utilizing UAV as an on-demand gateway is an efficient technique to enable the communication between IoT devices over a long distance. In this paper, we investigate a mobile UAV-aided Internet of Things (IoT) communications system, where one UAV actes as a dynamic aerial base station to serve all the IoT devices. We aim to maximize the sum rate of the mobile UAV by jointly optimizing IoT device-UAV scheduling, the uplink transmission power of the IoT devices and the UAV altitude. This optimization is a mixed-integer non-convex problem, and an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed by means of the block coordinate descent technique. Finally, simulation results are presented to demonstrate that our proposed scheme significantly outperforms the existing one.

Abstract:As the commercial launch of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communications gets near, the trend from the Internet of Things (IoT) to the Internet of Everything (IoE) is emerging. Due to the advantages of the high mobility, high Line-of-Sight (LoS) probability and low labor cost, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may play an important role in the future IoT communication networks, e.g., data collection in remote areas. In this article, we study the 3-D placement and resource allocation of multiple UAV-mounted base stations (BSs) in an uplink IoT network, where the balanced task for the UAV-BSs, the limited channel resource, and the signal interference are taken into consideration. In the considered system, the total transmission power of IoT devices is minimized, subject to a signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) threshold for each device. First, aiming to balance the task of each UAV, we propose a clustering algorithm based on an improved $K$ -means method to divide IoT devices into several groups so that the number of devices in each group is roughly the same. Then, based on matching theory, a modified-Hungarian-based dynamic many–many matching (HD4M) algorithm is designed for assigning subchannels to IoT devices, which can efficiently mitigate the interference. Finally, we jointly optimize the transmission power of IoT devices and the altitudes of UAVs via an alternating iterative method. The simulation results show that the total transmission power decreases significantly after applying the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been widely used as an aerial base station (BS) to assist the ground communications for Internet of Things (IoT) due to its wide-area coverage, high mobility and line-of-sight (LoS) communication link. In this paper, a multi-UAV enabled IoT is considered, where the UAVs provide integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) services to the IoT nodes. The radar mutual information (MI) is introduced to measure the sensing performance of ISAC from the information theory perspective. To achieve fair communications, we seek to maximize the minimum communication rate per IoT node by jointly optimizing node scheduling, transmit power and 3D trajectory of the UAV under the constraint of radar MI for each IoT node. The formulated non-convex multi-variable optimization problem is divided into three subproblems, including UAV scheduling optimization, UAV transmit power optimization, and UAV 3D trajectory optimization. The near-optimal solutions of the original optimization problem can be achieved by proposing a three-layer iterative optimization algorithm to optimize the three subproblems iteratively. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed optimization scheme can obviously improve communication rate under the constraint of radar MI as well as achieve fair communication for each node.

Abstract:This paper investigates the achievable rate maximization problem of a downlink unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication system aided by an intelligent omni-surface (IOS). Different from the state-of-the-art reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that only reflects incident signals, the IOS can simultaneously reflect and transmit the signals, thereby providing full-dimensional rate enhancement. To tackle such a problem, we formulate it by jointly optimizing the IOS's phase shift and the UAV trajectory. Although it is difficult to solve it optimally due to its non-convexity, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to obtain a high-quality suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that the IOS-assisted UAV communications can achieve more significant improvement in achievable rates than other benchmark schemes.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) communications appear to be one of the most promising paradigms for future wireless communication networks, because of their high flexibility in providing on-demand communication services. In this context, this paper investigates a fast and fine-grained UAV deployment scheme so as to improve the network throughput and meet the real-time communication demands of users. The key novelty of the proposed scheme lies in that the UAV deployment problem is formulated as a computer vision problem and a novel UAV deployment method, i.e., a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based UAV deployment method is proposed to solve it. By taking advantage of the classical CNN models such as VGG-Net, AlexNet, the UAV deployment position can be determined timely. Compared with the existing work, this work not only reduces the computational time overhead for determining the deployment positions of UAV, but also shortens the deployment response time of UAV. The superiority of the proposed UAV deployment scheme is investigated and verified. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can provide a fast and on-demand UAV deployment solution while guaranteeing the throughput performance of the UAV network.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle-aided visible light communication (UAV-VLC) can be used to realize joint emergency illumination and communication, but the endurance of UAV is a key limiting factor. In order to overcome this limitation, this paper proposes the use of an angle diversity transmitter (ADT) to enhance the energy efficiency of the UAV-VLC system. The ADT is designed with one bottom LED and several evenly distributed inclined side LEDs. By jointly optimizing the inclination angle of the side LEDs in the ADT and the height of the hovering UAV, the study aims to minimize the power consumption of the UAV-VLC system while satisfying the requirements of both illumination and communication. Simulation results show that the energy efficiency of the UAV-VLC system can be greatly enhanced by applying the optimized ADT. Moreover, the energy efficiency enhancement is much more significant when the LEDs in the ADT have a smaller divergence angle, or more side LEDs are configured in the ADT. More specifically, a 50.9% energy efficiency improvement can be achieved by using the optimized ADT in comparison to the conventional non-angle diversity transmitter (NADT).

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have garnered attention for their potential to improve wireless communication networks by establishing line-of-sight (LoS) connections. However, urban environments pose challenges such as tall buildings and trees, impacting communication pathways. Intelligent reflection surfaces (IRSs) offer a solution by creating virtual LoS routes through signal reflection, enhancing reliability and coverage. This paper presents a three-dimensional dynamic channel model for UAV-assisted communication systems with IRSs. Additionally, it proposes a novel channel-tracking approach using deep learning and artificial intelligence techniques, comprising preliminary estimation with a deep neural network and continuous monitoring with a Stacked Bidirectional Long and Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) model. Simulation results demonstrate faster convergence and superior performance compared to benchmarks, highlighting the effectiveness of integrating IRSs into UAV-enabled communication for enhanced reliability and efficiency.

Abstract:Employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to assist conventional terrestrial communications has brought significant interest recently due to the attractive advantages of UAV communications. In this paper, the UAV is considered as a relay to support the communications between the base station and distant mobile users, where the UAV adjusts its three dimensional coordinate and transmit power to accommodate the mobility of multiple mobile users network. Our objective is to maximize the sum rate of all users, while taking into account the quality-of-service requirement of each user, the line-of-sight connections for communication links and the information-causality constraint for the relaying system. However, the considered problem is challenging to solve, because the objective function and constraint are non-convex with mutually coupled variables. Firstly, we study the UAV-supported single user relaying case, and obtain an analytical optimal solution. Next, we propose an efficient algorithm based on the concept of successive convex approximation and the structure property of the problem. Furthermore, we demonstrate simulation results to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and reveal the impacts of different parameters on the system performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a single-cell cellular network with a number of cellular users (CUs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), in which multiple UAVs upload their collected data to the base station (BS). Two transmission modes are considered to support the multi-UAV communications, i.e., UAV-to-infrastructure (U2I) and UAV-to-UAV (U2U) communications. Specifically, the UAV with a high signal to noise ratio (SNR) for the U2I link uploads its collected data directly to the BS through U2I communication, while the UAV with a low SNR for the U2I link can transmit data to a nearby UAV through underlaying U2U communication for the sake of quality of service. We first propose a cooperative UAV sense-and-send protocol to enable the UAV-to-X communications, and then formulate the subchannel allocation and UAV speed optimization problem to maximize the uplink sum-rate. To solve this NP-hard problem efficiently, we decouple it into three sub-problems: U2I and cellular user (CU) subchannel allocation, U2U subchannel allocation, and UAV speed optimization. An iterative subchannel allocation and speed optimization algorithm (ISASOA) is proposed to solve these sub-problems jointly. Simulation results show that the proposed ISASOA can upload 10\% more data than the greedy algorithm.

Abstract:Despite of constantly-developing satellites and terrestrial fifth generation (5G) communications, there is still a large gap for maritime broadband coverage. In this paper, we explore the potential gain of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for maritime communications. A hybrid satellite-UAV-terrestrial network is considered, where the UAV is employed to offer an accompanying coverage for mobile ships. We optimize both the trajectory and transmit power of UAV to maximize the minimum of ship's achievable rate. Different from previous studies, we consider a typical composite channel model containing both large-scale and small-scale fading, to cope with the practical propagation environment. Moreover, we assume only the large-scale channel state information (CSI) is known for optimization, because the dynamic small-scale fading cannot be obtained before UAV's flight, whereas the large-scale CSI can be estimated according to the position information of ships. Under this context, an optimization problem is formulated, subject to constraints on UAV's kinematics and communication limitation. We solve the problem which is proved to be non-convex by problem decomposition, successive convex optimization and bisection searching tools. Simulation results have corroborated the superiority of the proposed accompanying coverage of UAV.
