Let [math] be a local net of real Hilbert subspaces of a complex Hilbert space [math] on the family [math] of double cones of the spacetime [math] ([math] odd), covariant with respect to a positive energy, unitary representation [math] of the Poincaré group [math], with the Bisognano–Wichmann property for the wedge modular group. We set an upper bound on the local entropy [math] of a vector [math] in a given region [math] that depends only on [math] and the PCT anti-unitary canonically associated with [math]. A similar result holds for local, Möbius covariant nets of standard subspaces on the circle. We compute the entropy increase with respect to the dual net and illustrate this bound for the nets associated with the [math]-current derivatives.

Abstract:The entropy of a quantum state measures information or uncertainty contained in the quantum system and plays a crucial role in quantum information theory. Many entropic properties, such as the subadditivity, have been studied for the discrete system with a finite-dimensional state space, while much less is explored in the infinite-dimensional system. In this work, we study the entropic properties of the continuous system that models a collection of Gaussian modes or fields. In particular, we identify the parameter range for the Rényi, Tsallis, and Unified entropies of Gaussian states that they are additive, subadditive, and strong subadditive. We show that the Rényi entropies are subadditive, further giving rise to the subadditivity of the Tsallis and Unified entropies in certain parameter range. We also find that the Tsallis and Unified entropies are not strong subadditive, while the Rényi entropies with the order ranging from 1 to 2 are conjectured to admit the strong subadditivity. Our results are useful in studying quantum correlations and channel capacities in Gaussian systems.

Abstract:We investigate upper and lower bounds on the entropy of entanglement of a superposition of bipartite states as a function of the individual states in the superposition. In particular, we extend the results in [G. Gour, <a class="link-internal link-http" href="http://arxiv.org">arxiv.org</a>:<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0704.1521" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0704.1521">0704.1521</a> (2007)] to superpositions of several states rather than just two. We then investigate the entanglement in a subspace as a function of its basis states: we find upper bounds for the largest entanglement in a subspace and demonstrate that no such lower bound for the smallest entanglement exists. Finally, we consider entanglement of superpositions using measures of entanglement other than the entropy of entanglement.

Abstract:In this note, a notion of generalized topological entropy for arbitrary subsets of the space of all sequences in a compact topological space is introduced. It is shown that for a continuous map on a compact space, the generalized topological entropy of the set of all orbits of the map coincides with the classical topological entropy of the map. Some basic properties of this new notion of entropy are considered; among them are the behavior of the entropy with respect to disjoint union, cartesian product, component restriction and dilation, shift mapping, and some continuity properties with respect to Vietoris topology. As an example, it is shown that any self-similar structure of a fractal given by a finite family of contractions gives rise to a notion of intrinsic topological entropy for subsets of the fractal. A generalized notion of Bowen’s entropy associated to any increasing sequence of compatible semimetrics on a topological space is introduced and some of its basic properties are considered. Abstract:We present a general definition of entropy in the setting of pre-ordered semigroups, extending the notion of topological entropy. From our definition, we obtain the basic properties exhibited by various entropy-like theories encountered in the literature, many of them being particular cases of our scheme. We show how to derive from the properties of the abstract entropy corresponding properties in the concrete cases. We also introduce a notion of expansiveness in this general context, extending the concept of expansive dynamical system, which is related to the entropy in a similar fashion as in the case of topological dynamics. Finally, as an application, we suggest some definitions of new entropies and expansiveness in concrete cases.

Generalized entropy for general subregions in quantum gravity

Abstract:We consider quantum algebras of observables associated with subregions in theories of Einstein gravity coupled to matter in the $G_N\rightarrow 0$ limit. When the subregion is spatially compact or encompasses an asymptotic boundary, we argue that the algebra is a type II von Neumann factor. To do so in the former case we introduce a model of an observer living in the region; in the latter, the ADM Hamiltonian effectively serves as an observer. In both cases the entropy of states on which this algebra acts is UV finite, and we find that it agrees, up to a state-independent constant, with the generalized entropy. For spatially compact regions the algebra is type II$_1$, implying the existence of an entropy maximizing state, which realizes a version of Jacobson's entanglement equilibrium hypothesis. The construction relies on the existence of well-motivated but conjectural states whose modular flow is geometric at an instant in time. Our results generalize the recent work of Chandrasekaran, Longo, Penington, and Witten on an algebra of operators for the static patch of de Sitter space.

Coarse entropy of metric spaces

Abstract:Coarse geometry studies metric spaces on the large scale. The recently introduced notion of coarse entropy is a tool to study dynamics from the coarse point of view. We prove that all isometries of a given metric space have the same coarse entropy and that this value is a coarse invariant. We call this value the coarse entropy of the space and investigate its connections with other properties of the space. We prove that it can only be either zero or infinity, and although for many spaces this dichotomy coincides with the subexponential--exponential growth dichotomy, there is no relation between coarse entropy and volume growth more generally. We completely characterise this dichotomy for spaces with bounded geometry and for quasi-geodesic spaces. As an application, we provide an example where coarse entropy yields an obstruction for a coarse embedding, where such an embedding is not precluded by considerations of volume growth.

From Classical to Quantum: Uniform Continuity Bounds on Entropies in Infinite Dimensions

Abstract:We prove a variety of new and refined uniform continuity bounds for entropies of both classical random variables on an infinite state space and of quantum states of infinite-dimensional systems. We obtain the first tight continuity estimate on the Shannon entropy of random variables with a countably infinite alphabet. The proof relies on a new mean-constrained Fano-type inequality and the notion of maximal coupling of random variables. We then employ this classical result to derive the first tight energy-constrained continuity bound for the von Neumann entropy of states of infinite-dimensional quantum systems, when the Hamiltonian is the number operator, which is arguably the most relevant Hamiltonian in the study of infinite-dimensional quantum systems in the context of quantum information theory. The above scheme works only for Shannon- and von Neumann entropies. Hence, to deal with more general entropies, e.g. $\alpha$-Rényi and $\alpha$-Tsallis entropies, with $\alpha \in (0,1)$, for which continuity bounds are known only for finite-dimensional systems, we develop a novel approximation scheme which relies on recent results on operator Hölder continuous functions and the equivalence of all Schatten norms in special spectral subspaces of the Hamiltonian. This approach is, as we show, motivated by continuity bounds for $\alpha$-Rényi and $\alpha$-Tsallis entropies of random variables that follow from the Hölder continuity of the entropy functionals. Bounds for $\alpha>1$ are provided, too. Finally, we settle an open problem on related approximation questions posed in the recent works by Shirokov on the so-called Finite-dimensional Approximation (FA) property.

Abstract:The sequence of entropy numbers quantifies the degree of compactness of a linear operator acting between quasi-Banach spaces. We determine the asymptotic behavior of entropy numbers in the case of natural embeddings between finite-dimensional Lorentz spaces $\ell_{p,q}^n$ in all regimes; our results are sharp up to constants. This generalizes classical results obtained by Schütt (in the case of Banach spaces) and Edmunds and Triebel, Kühn, as well as Guédon and Litvak (in the case of quasi-Banach spaces) for entropy numbers of identities between finte-dimensional Lebesgue sequence spaces $\ell_p^n$. We employ techniques such as interpolation, volume comparison as well as techniques from sparse approximation and combinatorial arguments. Further, we characterize entropy numbers of embeddings between finite-dimensional symmetric quasi-Banach spaces in terms of best $s$-term approximation numbers.

Abstract:In this note, we show several variational principles for metric mean dimension. First we prove a variational principles in terms of Shapira's entropy related to finite open covers. Second we establish a variational principle in terms of Katok's entropy. Finally using these two variational principles we develop a variational principle in terms of Brin-Katok local entropy.

Abstract:We generalize several results of the classical theory of thermodynamic formalism by considering a compact metric space $M$ as the state space. We analyze the shift acting on $M^{\mathbb{N}}$ and consider a general a priori probability for defining the transfer (Ruelle) operator. We study potentials $A$ which can depend on the infinite set of coordinates in $M^{\mathbb{N}}$ . We define entropy and by its very nature it is always a non-positive number. The concepts of entropy and transfer operator are linked. If $M$ is not a finite set there exist Gibbs states with arbitrary negative value of entropy. Invariant probabilities with support in a fixed point will have entropy equal to minus infinity. In the case $M=S^{1}$ , and the a priori measure is Lebesgue $dx$ , the infinite product of $dx$ on $(S^{1})^{\mathbb{N}}$ will have zero entropy. We analyze the Pressure problem for a Hölder potential $A$ and its relation with eigenfunctions and eigenprobabilities of the Ruelle operator. Among other things we analyze the case where temperature goes to zero and we show some selection results. Our general setting can be adapted in order to analyze the thermodynamic formalism for the Bernoulli space with countable infinite symbols. Moreover, the so-called $XY$ model also fits under our setting. In this last case $M$ is the unitary circle $S^{1}$ . We explore the differentiable structure of $(S^{1})^{\mathbb{N}}$ by considering a certain class of smooth potentials and we show some properties of the corresponding main eigenfunctions.

A Note on Mathai's Entropy Measure

Abstract:In a paper [8] the authors classify entropy into three categories, as a thermodynamics quantity, as a measure of information production, and as a means of statistical inference. An entropy measure introduced by Mathai falls into the second and third categories. It is shown that this entropy measure is the same whether the variables involved are real or complex scalar, vector, or matrix variables. If the entropy measure is optimized under some moment-like conditions then one can obtain various types of densities which are applicable in different areas. Unlike Tsallis' entropy [9], it does not need an intermediary escort distribution to yield the desired results. Calculus of variation can be directly applied to obtain the desired results under Mathai's entropy. Tsallis' entropy, which is the basis of the area of non-extensive statistical mechanics, is a modified version of the ?-generalized entropy of Havrda-Charvat considered in [7]. Various types of distributions that can be obtained through optimization of Mathai's entropy, are illustrated in this paper.

Abstract:The relative entropy of entanglement $E_R$ is defined as the distance of a multi-partite quantum state from the set of separable states as measured by the quantum relative entropy. We show that this optimisation is always achieved, i.e. any state admits a closest separable state, even in infinite dimensions; also, $E_R$ is everywhere lower semi-continuous. We use this to derive a dual variational expression for $E_R$ in terms of an external supremum instead of infimum. These results, which seem to have gone unnoticed so far, hold not only for the relative entropy of entanglement and its multi-partite generalisations, but also for many other similar resource quantifiers, such as the relative entropy of non-Gaussianity, of non-classicality, of Wigner negativity $\unicode{8212}$ more generally, all relative entropy distances from the sets of states with non-negative $\lambda$-quasi-probability distribution. The crucial hypothesis underpinning all these applications is the weak*-closedness of the cone generated by free states, and for this reason the techniques we develop involve a bouquet of classical results from functional analysis. We complement our analysis by giving explicit and asymptotically tight continuity estimates for $E_R$ and closely related quantities in the presence of an energy constraint.

Abstract:Probability measures with either finite Monge-Ampère energy or finite entropy have played a central role in recent developments in Kähler geometry. In this note we make a systematic study of quasi-plurisubharmonic potentials whose Monge-Ampère measures have finite entropy. We show that these potentials belong to the finite energy class ${\mathcal E}^{\frac{n}{n-1}}$, where $n$ denotes the complex dimension, and provide examples showing that this critical exponent is sharp. Our proof relies on refined Moser-Trudinger inequalities for quasi-plurisubharmonic functions.

Quantifying subspace entanglement with geometric measures

Abstract:Determining whether a subspace spanned by certain quantum states is entangled and its entanglement dimensionality remains a fundamental challenge in quantum information science. This paper introduces a geometric measure of $r$-bounded rank, $E_r(\mathcal{S})$, for a given subspace $\mathcal{S}$. Derived from the established geometric measure of entanglement, this measure is specifically designed to assess the entanglement within $\mathcal{S}$. It not only serves as a tool for determining the entanglement dimensionality but also illuminates the subspace's capacity to preserve such entanglement. By employing developed non-convex optimization techniques utilized in machine learning area, we can accurately calculate $E_r(\mathcal{S})$ within the manifold optimization framework. Our approach demonstrates notable advantages over existing hierarchical methods, PPT relaxation techniques, and the seesaw strategy, particularly by combining computational efficiency with broad applicability. More importantly, it paves the way for high-dimensional entanglement certification, which is crucial for numerous quantum information tasks. We showcase its effectiveness in validating high-dimensional entangled subspaces in bipartite systems, determining the border rank of multipartite pure states, and identifying genuinely or completely entangled subspaces.
