Abstract:The objective of this study is to explore the association between community cohesion and dependency among elderly people. This is a community-based cross-sectional study, and data were obtained from a face-to-face questionnaire survey including 2017 elderly people aged ≥ 60 years from 27 locations in China. The community cohesion was measured by the Neighborhood Cohesion Inventory. Logistic regression models were created to evaluate the association between community cohesion and dependency, and stratified logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the association of important community healthcare service resources with community cohesion at different income levels. The results of the logistic regression analyses show a significant positive association between community cohesion and dependency after adjusting for sociodemographic and health-related variables, and the odds ratio (OR) was 2.42 (95%CI:1.43–4.08). Logistic regression analyses showed that the high community cohesion for the low-income group was associated with the satisfaction with the community physicians' technical expertise, daycare service, rehabilitation equipment rental services, and health records management. In the high-income group, community cohesion showed a positive association with the satisfaction with the community physicians' attitude, regular health assessment, and chronic disease care service. Community cohesion was positively associated with dependency among elderly people. Findings indicate that community cohesion may be an important accessible resource for elderly people with dependency, and the targeted provision of health resources and services are the most effective strategies to enhance community cohesion.
