Abstract:The Fe-N-C material is a promising non-noble-metal electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Further improvement on the ORR activity is highly desired in order to replace Pt/C in acidic media. Herein, we developed a new-type of single-atom Fe-N-C electrocatalyst, in which Fe-Nx active sites were modified by P atoms. The half-wave potential of the optimized material reached 0.858 V, which is 23 mV higher than that of the pristine one in a 0.1 mol L−1 HClO4 solution. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that P doping can reduce the thermodynamic over potential of the rate determining step and consequently improve the ORR activity.

Abstract:We report our facile and efficient approach for synthesizing Co-Fe alloy based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts, in which alloy nanoparticles are encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanostructures. The catalysts with high hierarchical porosities are fabricated at an appropriate temperature of 775 degrees C without a further acid leaching treatment after pyrolysis due to the use of ZnO nanoparticles as auto -removable templates. Co/Fe atomic ratio is found to greatly influence the ORR catalytic activity. The catalyst with Co/Fe = 1 exhibits the best catalytic performance by showing an ORR onset potential of 0.99 V and a half-wave potential of 0.87 V (vs. RHE) in 0.1 M KOH, as well as 0.98 V and 0.83 V (vs. RHE) in 0.5 M H2SO4, better than or approaching the performance presented by a commercial 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. The Zn-air battery using the synthesized CoFe@N-C catalyst delivers a higher power density at ambient conditions by air-breathing than the one using the 28.6 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Relatively higher atomic concentrations of both Fe and Co as well as more graphitic nitrogen in the surface of CoFe@N-C detected by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) may account for its excellent ORR catalytic activities both in alkaline and acidic en-vironments.

Abstract:It is a challenging task to research oxygen reduction electrocatalysts with cost-effectiveness, high-performance and ultra-stability to replace traditional noble metal catalysts in renewable energy conversion/storage devices. Herein, cobalt phosphide (Co2P) nanoparticles encapsulated in Mn, N co-doped porous carbon nanosheets with abundant nanoholes (Co2P/Mn,N-PCNS) were prepared by a alizarin complexone coordination regulated pyrolysis at 800 °C. In the controlled experiments, the pyrolysis temperature and metal types were investigated in details. The resultant catalyst exhibited rapid mass/charge transfer and superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance (Eonset = 0.96 V; E1/2 = 0.86 V vs RHE), surpassing commercial Pt/C. This work presents some constructive guidelines for synthesis of appealing ORR electrocatalysts in renewable energy technology.

Abstract:Iron phthalocyanine (FePc), characterized by its distinctive Fe–N4 sites, represents a macromolecular catalyst with promising applications in bifunctional oxygen catalysis. However, its inherently flat and symmetrical configuration often results in relatively weak electrocatalytic performance. In this study, a novel approach was employed by first anchoring the Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework onto microsized carbon spheres derived from a Zn-based coordination polymer, followed by the incorporation of dispersed FePc molecules. The resultant catalyst, denoted as FePc-CoNC-CMS, exhibited remarkable bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER) activity in an alkaline medium, notably achieving a half-wave potential of 0.87 V and an overpotential of 313 mV at 10 mA cm–2. Both experimental and theoretical investigations revealed that the presence of FePc on the cobalt surface induced significant alterations in the electron distribution within the Fe center, thereby regulating the adsorption affinity of Fe–N4 sites toward oxygen. This structural modification led to outstanding bifunctional activity. When applied in zinc–air batteries, it demonstrated an excellent power density of 147.6 mW cm–2 and satisfactory charge–discharge stability over a period of 70 h at 10 mA cm–2. This pioneering work integrates metal–organic framework-derived metal–carbon nanomaterials with macromolecular catalysts, offering a novel and efficient pathway for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Single-atomic Fe-N 4 is the well-acknowledged active site in iron-nitrogen-carbon (Fe-N-C) material for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The adjusting of the electronic distribution of Fe-N 4 is promising for further enhancing the performance of the Fe-N-C catalyst. Herein, a phosphorus (P)-doped Fe-N-C catalyst with penta-coordinated single atom sites (FeNPC) is reported for efficient oxygen reduction. Fe K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) verifies the coordination environment of single Fe atom, while density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the penta-coordination and neighboring doped P atoms can simultaneously change the electronic distribution of Fe-N 4 and its adsorption strength of key intermediates, reducing the reaction-free energy of the potential-limiting step. Electrochemical tests validate the remarkable intrinsic ORR activity of FeNPC in alkaline media (a half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.904 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and limited current density ( J L ) of 6.23 mA·cm −2 ) and an enhanced ORR performance in neutral ( E 1/2 = 0.751 V, J L = 5.27 mA·cm −2 ) and acidic media ( E 1/2 = 0.735 V, J L = 5.82 mA·cm −2 ) with excellent stability, highlighting the benefits of optimizing the local environment of single-atomic Fe-N 4 .

Abstract:Manipulating the coordination environment and electron distribution for heterogeneous catalysts at the atomic level is an effective strategy to improve the electrocatalytic performance but remains challenging. Herein, atomically dispersed Fe and Co anchored on nitrogen, phosphorus co‐doped carbon hollow nanorod structures (FeCo‐NPC) are rationally designed and synthesized. The as‐prepared FeCo‐NPC catalyst exhibits significantly boosted electrocatalytic kinetics and greatly upshifted half‐wave potential for the oxygen reduction reaction. Furthermore, when utilized as the cathode, the FeCo‐NPC catalyst also displays excellent zinc‐air battery performance. Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the introduction of single Co atoms with Co‐N/P coordination around isolated Fe atoms induces asymmetric electron distribution, resulting in the suitable adsorption/desorption ability for oxygen intermediates and the optimized reaction barrier, thereby improving the electrocatalytic activity. Abstract:Co based catalysts are the promising substitutes for Pt/C catalysts in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, designing efficient Co based catalysts still remains a challenge due to many restrictions including charge transfer, mass transport and utilization of active sites, etc. Herein, Co nanoparticles embedded 3D-interconnected hierarchical porous (macro/meso/microporous) carbon matrixes with carbon nanotubes as building blocks (marked as Co@h-ZIF-800) were prepared. The prepared Co@h-ZIF-800 showed fast charge transfer and maintained the channels for continuous O2 transport. High surface area and efficient utilization of active sites also made Co@h-ZIF-800 exhibited excellent ORR performance with half-wave potential of 0.906 V (vs. RHE), 26 mV positive than commercial Pt/C. Our work can provide an effective strategy to explore efficient Co based electrocatalysts with hierarchical structure.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped graphitic carbon materials hosting single-atom iron (Fe-N-C) are major non-precious metal catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The nitrogen-coordinated Fe sites are described as the first coordination sphere. As opposed to the good performance in ORR, that in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is extremely poor due to the sluggish O-O coupling process, thus hampering the practical applications of rechargeable zinc (Zn)-air batteries. Herein, we succeed in boosting the OER activity of Fe-N-C by additionally incorporating phosphorus atoms into the second coordination sphere, here denoted as P/Fe-N-C. The resulting material exhibits excellent OER activity in 0.1 M KOH with an overpotential as low as 304 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Even more importantly, they exhibit a remarkably small ORR/OER potential gap of 0.63 V. Theoretical calculations using first-principles density functional theory suggest that the phosphorus enhances the electrocatalytic activity by balancing the *OOH/*O adsorption at the FeN4 sites. When used as an air cathode in a rechargeable Zn-air battery, P/Fe-N-C delivers a charge-discharge performance with a high peak power density of 269 mW cm-2, highlighting its role as the state-of-the-art bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are a promising catalyst material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we introduced inexpensive red phosphorus (P 4 ) into a homogeneous solution as a phosphorus source. Using the electrostatic spinning technique combined with high temperature carbonization, we successfully prepared self-supported carbon nanofibers doped with nitrogen (N) and loaded with ruthenium (Ru)-modified cobalt phosphide (Co 2 P) nanoparticles catalysts (Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs). The Ru@Co 2 P phosphide nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of the carbon fibers, forming a three-dimensional network structure. The synergistic effect between the Ru and Co 2 P systems resulted in excellent catalytic activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solutions. The N-doped conducting carbon matrix and large specific surface area of the active sites contributed to this enhanced performance. The Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs catalysts only required an overpotential of 48 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , outperforming the noble metal platinum/carbon (Pt/C) catalysts, which required an overpotential of 52 mV. Furthermore, the Ru@Co 2 P nanoparticles were protected by a carbon layer, preventing catalyst corrosion during long-term operation. The HER performance of the Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs catalysts remained stable even after 40 h of continuous operation, demonstrating their long-lasting stability. This research introduces a new approach to developing cost-effective and highly active self-supported network-structured phosphide catalysts.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a vital process in numerous energy conversion systems, and therefore, considerable attention has been devoted to the fabrication of nonnoble and highly efficient electrode materials for OER. Herein, Co nanoparticles embedded in the N, P-codoped porous carbon (Co/P-N-C) are synthesized using a novel Co-based metal-organic polymer (Co-MOP) as the precursor through carbonization and a subsequent phosphorization treatment process. When the phosphorization treatment is carried out at pH 3, Co/P-N-C exhibits a very low overpotential of 300 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 61 mV dec−1 and excellent stability over 20000 s. The electrocatalytic performance of Co/P-N-C was even better than that of the commercial RuO2 material. Density functional theory calculations were used to simulate the electrocatalytic process and to verify the experimental findings, which showed that the superior OER performance was attributed to the active sites of doped P and Co nanoparticles. This viable strategy of using a novel Co-MOP to create a novel phosphorized Co/P-N-C microporous carbon-based material may expand the opportunities for the exploration of high-performance and robust nonnoble metal electrocatalysts for energy-conversion reactions.

Abstract:AbstractElectrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into chemicals and fuels has recently attracted much interest, but normally suffers from a high overpotential and low selectivity. In this work, single P atoms were introduced into a N‐doped carbon supported single Fe atom catalyst (Fe‐SAC/NPC) mainly in the form of P−C bonds for CO2 electroreduction to CO in an aqueous solution. This catalyst exhibited a CO Faradaic efficiency of ≈97 % at a low overpotential of 320 mV, and a Tafel slope of only 59 mV dec−1, comparable to state‐of‐the‐art gold catalysts. Experimental analysis combined with DFT calculations suggested that single P atom in high coordination shells (n≥3), in particular the third coordination shell of Fe center enhanced the electronic localization of Fe, which improved the stabilization of the key *COOH intermediate on Fe, leading to superior CO2 electrochemical reduction performance at low overpotentials.

Abstract:The controllable construction of non-noble metal based bifunctional catalysts with high activities towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance, but remains a challenge. Herein, we reported an effective method to synthesize cobalt-nitrogen doped mesoporous carbon-based bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst with controllable phosphorus content (Co-N-P X -MC, X = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0). The mesoporous carbon substrate endowed the as-prepared samples with more exposed active surface (236.50 m 2 ·g −1 ) and the most appropriate doping ratio of phosphorus had been investigated to be 1.5 (Co-N-P 1.5 -MC). For ORR, Co-N-P 1.5 -MC exhibited excellent catalytic activity with more positive onset potential (1.01 V) and half-wave potential (0.84 V) than the other samples. For OER, Co-N-P 1.5 -MC also showed a low overpotential of 415 mV. Combining experimental results and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, the outstanding bifunctional catalytic performance of Co-N-P 1.5 -MC was due to the synergistic cooperation between the P and N dopants, which could reduce the reaction barriers and was favorable for ORR and OER. Moreover, the Zn-air battery using Co-N-P 1.5 -MC as the cathode showed remarkable battery performance with high stability (could operate stably for over 160 h at 10 mA·cm −2 ) and maximum power density (119 mW·cm −2 ), demonstrating its potential for practical applications. This work could provide significant enlightenment towards the design and construction of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for next-generation electrochemical devices.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction is an important cathode reaction, thus seeking for low cost and high activity catalysts is highly demanded. Herein, a ternary catalyst composed of Co2P nanoparticles, N and P co-doped carbon (NPC) and CeO2 nanosheets (Co2P-NPC-CeO2) is reported for efficient oxygen reduction. In such composite, CeO2 nanosheets are coated with a carbon layer derived from dopamine, and then decorated with Co2P nanoparticles by using phytic acid as the phosphorus source. High ORR catalytic activity was achieved in the optimized sample with a high onset potential of 880 mV (vs RHE), a positive half-wave potential of 827 mV (vs RHE), a diffusion limited current density of 5.24 mA cm(-2), and a good durability (the half-wave potential exhibited almost 0 mV after 1000 cycles). Together with the good durability and methanol tolerance, the composite catalyst demonstrated here can be potentially applied in energy conversion devices. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon materials encapsulating 3d transition metals are promising alternatives to replace noble metal Pt catalysts for efficiently catalyzing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, we use cobalt substituted perfluorosulfonic acid/polytetrafluoroethylene copolymer and dicyandiamide as the pyrolysis precursor to synthesize nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) encapsulating cobalt nanoparticles hybrid material. The carbon layers and specific surface area of NCNT have a critical role to the ORR performance due to the exposed active sites, determined by the mass ratio of the two precursors. The optimum hybrid material exhibits high ORR activity and stability, as well as excellent performance and durability in zinc–air battery.

Abstract:At present, construction of economical, efficient and stable electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical to alleviate the energy shortage. Theophylline (THP) can be easily extracted from natural plants, whose nitrogen atoms can chelate with metal ions. With assistance of THP, FeCo alloy was confined in N-doped carbon nanotubes (FeCo/NCNTs-800) by one-step pyrolysis of a mixture of the metal precursors, g-C3N4 and THP. The resulting FeCo/NCNTs-800 showed a better ORR performance (onset potential, Eonset = 1.09 V; half-wave potential, E1/2 = 0.87 V) than commercial Pt/C (50 wt%) in a 0.1 M KOH solution, with a limiting current density as high as –5.54 mA cm−2. This work offers a feasible strategy for developing transitional bimetal-based carbon catalysts in alkaline fuel cells.
