Abstract:Based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral, the expressions for the average intensity and the effective size of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams propagating through a paraxial ABCD optical system are obtained in the turbulent atmosphere. The influences of the source coherence and atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams in the turbulent atmosphere are investigated in detail. It is found that the beam profile will eventually evolve into a Gaussian-like distribution through turbulence in contrast to ring-shaped far-field pattern in free space. The effective size of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams with lower source coherence is less affected by turbulence. The parameter β and index n of the sources have some effects on intensity distribution and beam spreading through atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:In a subject of ‘optical angular momentum (OAM) and optical vortex’, a twisted light (also referred to as a ‘spiralling optical field’) possesses a helical wavefront. Recently, a new advance in the twisted light is Rego et al's discovery of self-torque effect that can cause an intrinsic angular acceleration (DOI:10.1126/science.aaw9486). Such a self-torque effect gives rise to a time-varying optical orbital angular momentum. Then we believe that the time-dependent OAM of this vortex laser beam can lead to non-trivial evolution of the OAM state vector. It is expected that the information on the self-torque of a twisted optical field might be reflected in an extra phase shift and, based on this, we study the possible precession and nutation evolution of a quantized optical orbital angular momentum in such a twisted light. The relevant effects such as non-cyclic non-adiabatic ‘geometric’ phase and dynamical phase due to the angular momentum precession and nutation in the vortex beam are also included. An effective Hamiltonian characterizing the optical vortex precession and nutation is constructed and the time-dependent wave equation is solved. The result obtained in this paper could be utilized in treating the polarization evolution and possible mechanical (force) effect of twisted optical fields that can exhibit the self-torque phenomenon.

Abstract:Recently, the discovery of optical spatiotemporal (ST) vortex beams with transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) has attracted increasing attention and is expected to extend the research scope and open new opportunities for practical applications of OAM states. The ST vortex beams are also applicable to other physical fields that involve wave phenomena, and here we develop the ST vortex concept in the field of acoustics and report the generation of Bessel-type ST acoustic vortex beams. The ST vortex beams are fully characterized using the scalar approach for the pressure field and the vector approach for the velocity field. We further investigate the transverse spreading effect and construct ST vortex beams with an ellipse-shaped spectrum to reduce the spreading effect. We also experimentally demonstrated the orthogonality relations between ST vortex beams with different charges. Our study successfully demonstrates the versatility of the acoustic system for exploring and discovering spatiotemporally structured waves, inspiring further investigation of exotic wave physics. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.014001 © 2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:We establish the propagation model of orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes carried by hollow vortex Gaussian (hvG) beams propagating in anisotropic atmospheric turbulence. Effects of light source parameters and atmospheric conditions on the OAM mode propagation performance are investigated in detail. The findings indicate the hvG beam with a smaller OAM quantum number, a larger beam order, or a longer source wavelength has more robust resistance to atmospheric turbulence interference. The waist width of the light source has different influences on the OAM mode propagation at different propagation distances. Atmospheric turbulences with larger values of anisotropy, inner-scale factor, non-Kolmogorov power spectrum index, and altitude are favorable for the OAM mode propagation. These research results are conducive to optimizing the design of light sources and space wireless communication systems with hvG beams.

Abstract:Vortex harmonics with fractional average orbital angular momentum are generated when a relativistic fractional vortex beam is incident on and reflected from an over-dense plane plasma target. A two-step model is presented to explain the far-field patterns of the harmonics. In the first step, a fundamental spot-shaped hole is produced during the hole-boring stage, and harmonics are generated simultaneously. In the second step, different order harmonics are diffracted by the hole and propagate to the far field. This process can be accurately described by the Fraunhofer diffraction theory. This work facilitates a basic recognition of fractional vortex beams.

It is shown that for PCV beams with different spatial coherence structures, the OAM flux density distribution exhibits rich variations along the propagation path. Our findings provide insight into the use of the OAM in free-space optical communications when turbulence effects are significant.

Non-zero Integral Spin of Acoustic Vortices and Spin-orbit Interaction in Longitudinal Acoustics

Abstract:Spin and orbital angular momenta (AM) are of fundamental interest in wave physics. Acoustic wave, as a typical longitudinal wave, has been well studied in terms of orbital AM, but still considered unable to carry non-zero integral spin AM or spin-orbital interaction in homogeneous media due to its spin-0 nature. Here we give the first self-consistent analytical calculations of spin, orbital and total AM of guided vortices under different boundary conditions, revealing that vortex field can carry non-zero integral spin AM. We also introduce for acoustic waves the canonical-Minkowski and kinetic-Abraham AM, which has aroused long-lasting debate in optics, and prove that only the former is conserved with the corresponding symmetries. Furthermore, we present the theoretical and experimental observation of the spin-orbit interaction of vortices in longitudinal acoustics, which is thought beyond attainable in longitudinal waves in the absence of spin degree of freedom. Our work provides a solid platform for future studies of the spin and orbital AM of guided acoustic waves and may open up a new dimension for acoustic vortex-based applications such as underwater communications and object manipulations.

Abstract:The orbital angular momentum (OAM) conversion is critical in understanding the interaction between the structural sound field and a planar lattice. Herein, we explored the evolution of a monochromatic acoustic vortex beam (AVB) that is scattered by a phononic crystal (PnC) or a correlated random lattice. The phenomenon is ascribed to the enhanced orbit-orbit angular momentum coupling induced by the band structure. By modifying the coupling condition, accurate and continuous micro-manipulation of the AVBs can be achieved, including the transverse/lateral gravity shift, the dynamics of the phase singularities, the spatial distribution of acoustic pressure and etc. This research provides insight to the inhomogeneous coupling of AVBs with both the propagating Bloch waves and the localized Anderson modes, and may facilitate the development of novel OAM-based acoustic devices for active sound field manipulation.

Abstract:We study the spectral density of vortex beams propagating in atmospheric turbulence by numerical simulation and experiment with a spatial light modulator (SLM). It is found that the figures produced by experiment with SLM are quite different from those by traditional numerical simulation. In view of this, we put forward a new simulation method that refers to the theory of beam wander, leading to a consistency between numerical simulation and experimental results eventually. The improved simulation method could improve the accuracy of beam simulation greatly in optical study.
Angular width and beam quality of a partially coherent standard Laguerre-Gaussian vortex beam in turbulent plasma

Abstract:Analytical formulas for the angular width and propagation factor of a partially coherent standard Laguerre-Gaussian (sLG) vortex beam through anisotropic turbulent plasma were derived based on the extended Huygens-Fresnel integral and the second-order moments of the Wigner distribution function. The evolution properties of the angular width and propagation factor of partially coherent sLG vortex beams propagating in anisotropic turbulent plasma were investigated numerically. The numerical results demonstrate the influence of the source and turbulence parameters on the normalized angular width and normalized propagation factor of the partially coherent sLG vortex beams. It can be observed that in a partially coherent sLG vortex beam with a lower beam order, topological charge, and wavelength, or a higher correlation coefficient of the source plane, and with increasing propagation distance and refractive index fluctuation variance or decreasing anisotropy parameters, the outer and inner scales of the turbulent plasma have a large angular width and propagation factor (i.e., the beam quality is worse). The results of this study will be beneficial for applications in remote sensing and optical communications.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by acoustic vortex attracts extensive research interests due to the possible application such as acoustic tweezer and communications. The OAM in the conventional symmetric acoustic vortex is generally determined by topological charge l. Here, we provide the beam symmetry as an alternative factor to manipulate the OAM beyond the topological charge. We propose a nondiffractive asymmetric acoustic vortex beam, which can be generated by an acoustic metasurface and modulate the OAM to arbitrary values. Rather than the radially symmetric distribution, the intensity of the asymmetric acoustic vortex is characterized with a crescent shape controlled by the asymmetry parameter $\ensuremath{\alpha}$. The ratio between axial OAM and sound energy on the transverse plane depends on the asymmetry parameter and thus is not quantized by the ratio of topological charge l to wave angular frequency $\ensuremath{\omega}$ as in conventional vortex beam. Moreover, we present the realization of the proposed vortex beam by designed metasurface, and reveal the nondiffractive nature of the asymmetric acoustic vortex beam. Our work expands the family of acoustic vortex and demonstrates an alternative route to control acoustic OAM.

Abstract:Vortices in fluids and gases have piqued the interest of human for centuries. Development of classical-wave physics and quantum mechanics highlighted wave vortices characterized by phase singularities and topological charges. In particular, vortex beams have found numerous applications in modern optics and other areas. Recently, optical spatiotemporal vortex states exhibiting the phase singularity both in space and time have been reported. Here, we report the first generation of acoustic spatiotemporal vortex pulses. We utilize an acoustic meta-grating with mirror-symmetry breaking as the spatiotemporal vortex generator. In the momentum-frequency domain, we unravel that the transmission spectrum functions exhibit a topological phase transition where the vortices with opposite topological charges are created or annihilated in pairs. Furthermore, with the topological textures of the nodal lines, these vortices are robust and exploited to generate spatiotemporal vortex pulse against structural perturbations and disorder. Our work paves the way for studies and applications of spatiotemporal structured waves in acoustics and other wave systems.

Abstract:Herein, we derive the expression for the atmospheric refractive index structure constant under the influence of planar acoustic wave perturbations under the influence of the acoustic field on the refractive index and energy of the atmosphere. Utilizing the low-frequency compensated power spectrum inversion technique, we simulate the refractive index power spectrum of atmospheric turbulence perturbed by a planar acoustic wave. Numerical analysis is conducted on the transmission characteristics of the vortex light superposition states in atmospheric turbulence perturbed by a plane acoustic wave under different acoustic wave transmission heights, acoustic pressure amplitudes, and frequencies. Results indicate that introducing an acoustic field induces fluctuations in the atmospheric refractive index structure constant, with a more pronounced impact on the refractive index than on energy. Compared with the sole consideration of the impact of the acoustic field on the atmospheric refractive index, incorporating its effect on atmospheric energy results in a decrease in the atmospheric refractive index structure constant. The impact of the acoustic field on atmospheric turbulence is directly proportional to both acoustic pressure amplitude and frequency. The influence of the acoustic field on the transmission properties of the vortex optical superposition state varies with different acoustic transmission distances. Consequently, the transmission characteristics of the vortex light superposition state can be actively modulated according to varying acoustic wave transmission distances. This study offers a theoretical basis for modulating the optical field transmission characteristics via acoustic fields.

Spatiotemporal optical vortices with controllable radial and azimuthal quantum numbers

Abstract:Optical spatiotemporal vortices with transverse photon orbital angular momentum (OAM) have recently become a focal point of research. In this work we theoretically and experimentally investigate optical spatiotemporal vortices with radial and azimuthal quantum numbers, known as spatiotemporal Laguerre-Gaussian (STLG) wavepackets. These 3D wavepackets exhibit phase singularities and cylinder-shaped edge dislocations, resulting in a multi-ring topology in its spatiotemporal profile. Unlike conventional ST optical vortices, STLG wavepackets with non-zero p and l values carry a composite transverse OAM consisting of two directionally opposite components. We further demonstrate mode conversion between an STLG wavepacket and an ST Hermite-Gaussian wavepacket through the application of strong spatiotemporal astigmatism. The converted STHG wavepacket is de-coupled in intensity in space-time domain that can be utilized to implement the efficient and accurate recognition of ultrafast STLG wavepackets carried various p and l. This study may offer new insights into high-dimensional quantum information, photonic topology, and nonlinear optics, while promising potential applications in other wave phenomena such as acoustics and electron waves.

Influence of oceanic turbulence on propagation of Airy vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum

Abstract:With Rytov approximation theory, we derive the analytic expression of detection probability of Airy vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) through an anisotropic weak oceanic turbulence. We investigate the influences of turbulence parameters and beam parameters on the propagation properties of Airy-OAM beam. The numerical simulation results show that the anisotropic oceanic turbulence with a lower dissipation rate of temperature variance, smaller ratio of temperature and salinity contributions to the refractive index spectrum, higher dissipation rate of kinetic energy per unit mass of fluid, bigger inner scale factor, larger anisotropic coefficient causes the larger detection probability of Airy-OAM beam. Moreover, the Airy-OAM beam with a smaller topological charge, larger main ring radius and longer wavelength, has strong resistance to oceanic turbulent interference. Additionally, the detection probability decreases with the increase of receiving aperture size. In comparison with Laguerre-Gaussian-OAM beam, Airy-OAM beam has more anti-interference to turbulence when its topological charge is larger than 5 due to its non-diffraction and self-healing characteristics. The results are useful for underwater optical communication link using Airy-OAM beam.

Abstract:Vortex beams are unique in that they have annular spatial profiles and carry orbital angular momentum. This has led to their use in applications including laser processing, microparticle manipulation and signal transmission. Off-axis vortex beams, which may be considered a subset of vortex beams, display a broader spectrum of physical characteristics in comparison with their conventional (integer-order) counterparts. In this work, we derive the equations which describe the intensity distribution of off-axis vortex beams and use these to theoretically model their spatial profile. These models are supported by experimental generation of both integer and off-axis vortex beams, and the presence of orbital angular momentum is investigated through the use of the cylindrical lens transformation method.
