Abstract:We report the study of the thermal transport management of monolayer graphene allotrope nanoribbons (size ∼20×4nm2) by the modulation of their structures via molecular dynamics simulations. The thermal conductivity of graphyne (GY)-like geometries is observed to decrease monotonously with increasing number of acetylenic linkages between adjacent hexagons. Strikingly, by incorporating those GY or GY-like structures, the thermal performance of graphene can be effectively engineered. The resulting hetero-junctions possess a sharp local temperature jump at the interface, and show a much lower effective thermal conductivity due to the enhanced phonon–phonon scattering. More importantly, by controlling the percentage, type and distribution pattern of the GY or GY-like structures, the hetero-junctions are found to exhibit tunable thermal transport properties (including the effective thermal conductivity, interfacial thermal resistance and rectification). This study provides a heuristic guideline to manipulate the thermal properties of 2D carbon networks, ideal for application in thermoelectric devices with strongly suppressed thermal conductivity.
Revisiting Phonon-Phonon Scattering in Single-Layer Graphene

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms of thermal conduction in graphene is a long-lasting research topic, due to its high thermal conductivity. Peierls-Boltzmann transport equation (PBTE) based studies have revealed many unique phonon transport properties in graphene, but most previous works only considered three-phonon scatterings and relied on interatomic force constants (IFCs) extracted at 0 K. In this paper, we explore the roles of four-phonon scatterings and the temperature dependent IFCs on phonon transport in graphene through our PBTE calculations. We demonstrate that the strength of four-phonon scatterings would be severely overestimated by using the IFCs extracted at 0 K compared with those corresponding to a finite temperature, and four-phonon scatterings are found to significantly reduce the thermal conductivity of graphene even at room temperature. In order to reproduce the prediction from molecular dynamics simulations, phonon frequency broadening has to be taken into account when determining the phonon scattering rates. Our study elucidates the phonon transport properties of graphene at finite temperatures, and could be extended to other crystalline materials.
Thermal Conductivity Decomposition in Two-Dimensional Materials: Application to Graphene

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials have unusual phonon spectra due to the presence of flexural (out-of-plane) modes. Although molecular dynamics simulations have been extensively used to study heat transport in such materials, conventional formalisms treat the phonon dynamics isotropically. Here, we decompose the microscopic heat current in atomistic simulations into in-plane and out-of-plane components, corresponding to in-plane and out-of- plane phonon dynamics, respectively. This decomposition allows for direct computation of the corresponding thermal conductivity components in two-dimensional materials. We apply this decomposition to study heat transport in suspended graphene, using both equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. We show that the flexural component is responsible for about two-thirds of the total thermal conductivity in unstrained graphene, and the acoustic flexural component is responsible for the logarithmic divergence of the conductivity when a sufficiently large tensile strain is applied.
Nanoscale Heat Conduction Properties of Graphene at Different Phonon Branches

Abstract:Nano, Ahead of Print. Lattice vibrations or phonons play an important role in determining material properties, including thermal conductivity. To model the phenomenon accurately and efficiently, the most important factors governing phonon physics need to be identified, for example, polarization branches. Research continues into many aspects of the fundamental physical processes involved in phonons and into possible applications of these processes in modern physics. One of the most interesting controversies in the thermal properties of graphene involves the importance of out-of-plane acoustic phonons. The need for clarity in understanding this importance dictates that the thermal conductivity of graphene should be evaluated in various circumstances. The nanoscale heat conduction properties of graphene are studied by iteratively solving the Boltzmann transport equation and rigorously treating the normal and Umklapp collisions in the frame of three-phonon interactions. This captures the mechanistic aspects of thermal conductivity by revealing what phonon branches are present. The thermal conductivity is evaluated in different crystallite sizes and at different frequencies and temperatures. The results indicated that out-of-plane acoustic phonons become increasingly important in the frame of three-phonon interactions. The out-of-plane acoustic branch dominates thermal transport whereas the other acoustic branches make small contributions. The importance of this branch is generally attributed to the high density of states and restrictions governing anharmonic effects. The three-phonon normal and Umklapp processes must be clearly accounted for and the contribution from optical branches is not negligible at higher temperatures. The results have implications in the quest for predictive and quantitative calculations of thermal conductivity.

Study on Thermal Characteristics of Phonons in Graphene

Abstract:Phonons are the main energy carriers for heat conduction in graphene. One of the most important and basic thermal properties is the relaxation time. In this paper, phonon relaxation times are investigated by a normal mode decomposition method to reveal the distinctions of the different phonon modes. The method is based on equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. In the simulations, the heat current autocorrelation functions are obtained for each single phonon, and the relaxation times are extracted by fitting the functions. In addition, the relations among relaxation time, wave vector, frequency, and temperature are examined. It is found that the variation tendency of the relaxation time with wave vector is close to that of the dispersion with wave vector. For frequency and temperature, they are in agreement with the theoretical model: 1/=nTm. It is shown thatn is 1.56 for acoustic phonons, while for optical phonons, it varies slightly with frequencies; and m is slightly different for each mode. Finally, the contributions of different phonon modes to thermal conductivity are investigated. It is found that low frequency phonons dominate the heat conduction process because of the relatively high relaxation time and density of states.
Effect of out-of-plane acoustic phonons on the thermal transport properties of graphene

Abstract:The lattice thermal conductivity of graphene is evaluated using a microscopic model that takes into account the lattice's discrete nature and the phonon dispersion relation within the Brillouin zone. The Boltzmann transport equation is solved iteratively within the framework of three-phonon interactions without taking into account the four-phonon scattering process. The Umklapp and normal collisions are treated rigorously, thereby avoiding relaxation-time and long-wavelength approximations. The mechanisms of the failures of these approximations in predicting the thermal transport properties are discussed. Evaluation of the thermal conductivity is performed at different temperatures and frequencies and in different crystallite sizes. Reasonably good agreement with the experimental data is obtained. The calculation reveals a critical role of out-of-plane acoustic phonons in determining the thermal conductivity. The out-of-plane acoustic phonons contribute greatly and the longitudinal and transverse acoustic phonons make small contributions over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. The out-of-plane acoustic phonons dominate the thermal conductivity due to their high density of states and restrictions governing the anharmonic phonon scattering. The selection rule severely restricts the phase space for out-of-plane phonon scattering due to reflection symmetry. The optical phonon contribution cannot be neglected at higher temperatures. Both Umklapp and normal processes must be taken into account in order to predict the phonon transport properties accurately.

Thermal and Thermoelectric Properties of Graphene

Abstract:The subject of thermal transport at the mesoscopic scale and in low-dimensional systems is interesting for both fundamental research and practical applications. As the first example of truly two-dimensional materials, graphene has exceptionally high thermal conductivity, and thus provides an ideal platform for the research. Here we review recent studies on thermal and thermoelectric properties of graphene, with an emphasis on experimental progresses. A general physical picture based on the Landauer transport formalism is introduced to understand underlying mechanisms. We show that the superior thermal conductivity of graphene is contributed not only by large ballistic thermal conductance but also by very long phonon mean free path (MFP). The long phonon MFP, explained by the low-dimensional nature and high sample purity of graphene, results in important isotope effects and size effects on thermal conduction. In terms of various scattering mechanisms in graphene, several approaches are suggested to control thermal conductivity. Among them, introducing rough boundaries and weakly-coupled interfaces are promising ways to suppress thermal conduction effectively. We also discuss the Seebeck effect of graphene. Graphene itself might not be a good thermoelectric material. However, the concepts developed by graphene research might be applied to improve thermoelectric performance of other materials.

Abstract:Coherent wave effects of thermal phonons hold promise of transformative opportunities in thermal transport control but remain largely unexplored due to the small wavelength of thermal phonons, typically below a few nanometers. This small length scale indicates that, instead of artificial phononic crystals, a more promising direction is to examine the coherent phonon effects in natural materials with hierarchical superstructures matching the thermal phonon wavelength. In this work, we use first-principles simulations to characterize the previously unstudied thermal properties of D-graphene and T-graphene, two-dimensional carbon allotropes based upon the traditional graphene structure but containing a secondary, in-plane periodicity. We find that despite very similar atomic structure and bonding strength, D-graphene and T-graphene possess significantly different thermal properties than that of pristine graphene. At room temperature, the calculated thermal conductivity of D-graphene and T-graphene is 600 Wm-1K-1 and 800 Wm-1K-1 compared to over 3000 Wm-1K-1 for graphene. We attribute these distinct properties to the presence of naturally occurring, low frequency optical phonon modes that display characteristics of phonon coherence and arise from a folding of the acoustic modes and the associated frequency gap opening, a phenomenon also found in superlattices where an out of plane periodicity is introduced. Furthermore, we observe significantly enhanced Umklapp scatterings in D- and T-graphene that largely suppress the hydrodynamic phonon transport in pristine graphene. Our study presents D-graphene and T-graphene as ideal model systems to explore the coherent phonon effects in 2D and demonstrates the potential of using coherent phonon effects to significantly modify thermal transport of 2D materials without making drastic changes to their fundamental compositions.

Abstract:Graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) material with over 100-fold anisotropy of heat flow between the in-plane and out-of-plane directions. High in-plane thermal conductivity is due to covalent sp2 bonding between carbon atoms, whereas out-of-plane heat flow is limited by weak van der Waals coupling. Herein, we review the thermal properties of graphene, including its specific heat and thermal conductivity (from diffusive to ballistic limits) and the influence of substrates, defects, and other atomic modifications. We also highlight practical applications in which the thermal properties of graphene play a role. For instance, graphene transistors and interconnects benefit from the high in-plane thermal conductivity, up to a certain channel length. However, weak thermal coupling with substrates implies that interfaces and contacts remain significant dissipation bottlenecks. Heat flow in graphene or graphene composites could also be tunable through a variety of means, including phonon scattering by substrates, edges or interfaces. Ultimately, the unusual thermal properties of graphene stem from its 2D nature, forming a rich playground for new discoveries of heat flow physics and potentially leading to novel thermal management applications.

Abstract:We investigated theoretically the phonon thermal conductivity of single layer graphene. The phonon dispersion for all polarizations and crystallographic directions in graphene lattice was obtained using the valence-force field method. The three-phonon Umklapp processes were treated exactly using an accurate phonon dispersion and Brillouin zone, and accouting for all phonon relaxation channels allowed by the momentum and energy conservation laws. The uniqueness of graphene was reflected in the two-dimensional phonon density of states and restrictions on the phonon Umklapp scattering phase-space. The phonon scattering on defects and graphene edges has been also included in the model. The calculations were performed for the Gruneisen parameter, which was determined from the ab initio theory as a function of the phonon wave vector and polarization branch, and for a range of values from experiments. It was found that the near room-temperature thermal conductivity of single layer graphene, calculated with a realistic Gruneisen parameter, is in the range ~ 2000 - 5000 W/mK depending on the defect concentration and roughness of the edges. Owing to the long phonon mean free path the graphene edges produce strong effect on thermal conductivity even at room temperature. The obtained results are in good agreement with the recent measurements of the thermal conductivity of suspended graphene.

Abstract:: With the irreversible trend of miniaturization and the pursuit of a high power density in electronic devices, heat dissipation has become crucial for designing next-generation electronic products. Graphene, which has the highest thermal conductivity among all discovered solid materials, has attracted attention from both academia and the industry. As a two-dimensional material with atom-scale thickness, graphene is suitable for investigating the phonon transport behavior at reduced dimensions. The mass production technique of graphene makes it a promising material for thermal management in consumer electronics, information technology, medical devices, and new energy automobiles. In this review, we summarize the recent progress on the thermal conduction of graphene. In the first part, we introduce the thermal conductivity measurement methods for graphene, including the optothermal Raman method, suspended-pad method, and time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method. The thermal measurement of graphene with high accuracy is key to understanding the heat transfer mechanism of graphene; however, it is still a significant challenge. Despite the development of measurement methods, the thermal measurement of suspended single-layer graphene is limited by the graphene transfer technique, estimation of the thermal contact resistance, sensitivity to the in-plane thermal conductivity in the thermal model, and other factors. In the second part, we discuss the theoretical study of the thermal conductivity of graphene via first principle calculations and molecular dynamics simulation. The “selection rule” of phonon scattering explains the thickness-dependent thermal conductivity of few-layer graphene, and the understanding of the contribution of phonon modes to the thermal conductivity of graphene has been updated recently by taking multiple-phonon scattering into consideration. The size effect on the thermal conductivity of graphene is discussed in this section for a better understanding of the phonon transport behavior of graphene. In the third part, we conclude with the thermal management applications of graphene, including a highly thermally conductive graphene film, graphene fiber, and graphene-enhanced thermal interface materials. For graphene films, which are the pioneering thermal management applications in industrial use, we focus on the challenge of fabricating highly thermally conductive graphene films with large thicknesses and propose possible technical methods. For graphene-enhanced thermal interface materials, we summarize the main factors affecting the thermal properties and discuss the tradeoff between the high thermal conductivity of graphene flakes and the dispersibility of graphene in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that a 3D thermal conductive network is essential for efficient heat dissipation in graphene-based composites. Finally, a summary of opportunities and challenges in the thermal study of graphene is presented at the end of the review. Research on the thermal properties of graphene has made immense progress since the discovery of the thermal conductivity of graphene more than a decade ago, and will continue in order to address the urgent requirements of thermal management.
First-principles determination of high thermal conductivity of PCF-graphene: A comparison with graphene

Abstract:Poly-cyclooctatetraene framework (PCF)-graphene, an emerging all-sp 2 hybridized two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope, possesses an intrinsic direct bandgap (0.77 eV) and excellent mechanical properties, indicating great potential in nanoelectronics. Understanding the thermal transport behavior of PCF-graphene is of vital importance for determining the reliability of related devices based on it. In this work, the thermal transport in PCF-graphene is systematically studied using the Boltzmann transport theory combined with first-principles calculations. The results show that the room-temperature thermal conductivity of PCF-graphene with only considering three-phonon scattering is as high as 1587.3 W/m K along the zigzag direction, and decreases by 27.1% (1157.4 W/m K) when including four-phonon scattering, indicating the four-phonon scattering plays a non-negligible role in in thermal transport. Although the thermal conductivity of PCF-graphene is not as large as that in graphene, it still exceeds most common 2D materials and makes it suitable for applications in the thermal management of microelectronics. Analyses of phonon group velocity and phonon scattering rates are conducted to reveal the high thermal conductivity of PCF. Moreover, as the temperature increases to 800 K, the reduction of thermal conductivity is close to 50% after including four-phonon scattering. The analysis of phonon group velocity and phonon scattering rates are conducted to reveal the underlying mechanism. Our results provide insights for constructing high-thermal-conductivity materials based on 2D carbon allotropes.

Abstract:Thermal transport in graphene and graphene nanostructures have been studied experimentally and theoretically. Methods and previous work to measure and calculate the thermal conductivities of graphene and related nanostructures are briefly reviewed. We demonstrate that combining Raman spectroscopy for thermometry and electrical transport for Joule heating is an effective approach to measure both graphene thermal conductivity and graphene-substrate interface thermal resistance. This technique has been applied to a variety of exfoliated or CVD-grown graphene samples (both suspended and substrate-supported), yielding values comparable with those measured using all-optical or all-electrical techniques. We have also employed classical molecular dynamics simulation to study thermal transport in graphene nanostructures and suggest such structures may be used as promising building blocks for nanoscale thermal engineering.

Abstract:Two-dimensional materials, such as graphene, boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenides, have attracted increased interest due to their potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics. Thermal transport in two-dimensional materials could be quite different from three-dimensional bulk materials. This article reviews the progress on experimental measurements and theoretical modeling of phonon transport and thermal conductivity in two-dimensional materials. We focus our review on a few typical two-dimensional materials, including graphene, boron nitride, silicene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and black phosphorus. The effects of different physical factors, such as sample size, strain and defects, on thermal transport in Two-dimensional materials are summarized. We also discuss the environmental effect on the thermal transport of two-dimensional materials, such as substrate and when two-dimensional materials are presented in heterostructures and intercalated with inorganic components or organic molecules.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance of Graphene at Room Temperature by Cut-off Phonon Frequency

Abstract:Based on the full electron-phonon interactions and temperature-induced phonon renormalization, both electrical transport and thermal transport of graphene are systematically studied under different cut-off phonon frequencies. When the electron concentration is less than 1013 cm-2, the electrical transport properties increase with the cut-off phonon frequency. Otherwise, the electrical transport properties are nearly the same between 1013 cm-2 and 1015 cm-2, indicating that the contribution of cut-off phonon frequency decreases with the electron concentration. Considering the three-phonon, four-phonon, and phonon-electron scattering processes, the lattice thermal conductivity is studied, showing a value of 1357 W/mK at room temperature. At Van Hove singularity (5 x 1014 cm-2), the lattice thermal conductivity changes from 1357 W/mK to 557 W/mK. The effect of cut-off phonon frequency on thermal transport is nearly negligible. The electrical/phonon transport property accumulation concerning the mean free path shows the quantitative relationship between the mean free path and transport property, indicating a key mean free path of 186 nm. With a grain boundary of 186 nm, the ZT changes from 0.22 to 0.56 under a cut-off phonon frequency of 0 cm-1, while increasing from 0.64 to 1.23 under a cut-off phonon frequency of 30 cm-1. This work provides a strategy to enhance the thermoelectric property by regulating the electron-phonon coupling strength through cut-off phonon frequency.

Abstract:We review experimental and theoretical results on thermal transport in semiconductor nanostructures (multilayer thin films, core/shell and segmented nanowires), single- and few-layer graphene, hexagonal boron nitride, molybdenum disulfide and black phosphorus. Different possibilities of phonon engineering for optimization of electrical and heat conductions are discussed. The role of the phonon energy spectra modification on the thermal conductivity in semiconductor nanostructures is revealed. The dependence of thermal conductivity in graphene and related two-dimensional (2D) materials on temperature, flake size, defect concentration, edge roughness and strain is analyzed.

Abstract:Thermal transport in graphene is largely phonon‐based. Contrasting to the small electron‐based thermal transport of graphene, T‐graphene, biphenylene, and net‐graphene are predicted to display ultrahigh electron thermal conductivities. These planar carbon allotropes, containing four‐, five‐, and eight‐membered carbon–carbon rings, may enable thermal energy transfer through a combination of electrons and phonon vibrations in next‐generation nanotechnologies. Although isolated nonhexagonal carbon rings in graphene are associated with strain relaxation and curvature, dense and ordered arrangements of four‐, five‐, and eight‐membered rings with strained carbon–carbon bonds can tile 2D planar layers. Using the Boltzmann transport equation formalism in combination with density functional theory calculations, how the presence of nonhexagonal rings impacts the thermal conductivity of three 2D carbon allotropes: T‐graphene (four and eight rings), biphenylene (four, six, and eight rings), and net‐graphene (four, six, and eight rings), is investigated. The phonon thermal conductivity (κph), which captures three‐phonon, four‐phonon, and phonon–electron interactions, is significantly lowered with respect to pristine graphene. In compensation, the electron thermal conductivity (κe), which captures electron–phonon interactions, is enhanced to record high values, such that the room‐temperature total thermal conductivity κtotal = κph + κe approaches the values of pristine graphene. 2D carbon allotropes could be of interest for applications requiring thermal energy transfer by a combination of diffusion of electrons and phonon vibrations.

Abstract:In the hydrodynamic regime, phonons drift with a nonzero collective velocity under a temperature gradient, reminiscent of viscous gas and fluid flow. The study of hydrodynamic phonon transport has spanned over half a century but has been mostly limited to cryogenic temperatures (∼1 K) and more recently to low-dimensional materials. Here, we identify graphite as a three-dimensional material that supports phonon hydrodynamics at significantly higher temperatures (∼100 K) based on first-principles calculations. In particular, by solving the Boltzmann equation for phonon transport in graphite ribbons, we predict that phonon Poiseuille flow and Knudsen minimum can be experimentally observed above liquid nitrogen temperature. Further, we reveal the microscopic origin of these intriguing phenomena in terms of the dependence of the effective boundary scattering rate on momentum-conserving phonon-phonon scattering processes and the collective motion of phonons. The significant hydrodynamic nature of phonon transport in graphite is attributed to its strong intralayer sp2 hybrid bonding and weak van der Waals interlayer interactions. More intriguingly, the reflection symmetry associated with a single graphene layer is broken in graphite, which opens up more momentum-conserving phonon-phonon scattering channels and results in stronger hydrodynamic features in graphite than graphene. As a boundary-sensitive transport regime, phonon hydrodynamics opens up new possibilities for thermal management and energy conversion.
