Abstract:We discuss the suitability of few-body exclusive W boson decays for precise measurements of its mass and width. We show that the decay modes of this kind have extremely small relative widths, which excludes any possibility of their practical use.

Abstract:In the framework of electroweak theory and perturbative quantum chromodynamics, we examine various exclusive decay channels of $W$ bosons that can be fully or partially reconstructed. Our findings provide predictions for the partial widths and address some gaps in previous literature. We also place a strong emphasis on understanding and estimating the associated theoretical uncertainties.

Abstract:Using the most general, model independent form of the effective Hamiltonian, the exclusive, rare baryonic (Lambda_b -> Lambda l^+ l^- ~l=\mu,\tau) decay is analyzed. We study sensitivity of the branching ratio and lepton forward-backward asymmetry to the new Wilson coefficients. Is is shown that these physical quantities are quite sensitive to the new Wilson coefficients. Determination of the position of zero value of the forward-backward asymmetry can serve as a useful tool for establishing new physics beyond the standard model, as well as fixing the sign of the new Wilson coefficients.

Rare and exclusive few-body decays of the Higgs, Z, W bosons, and the top quark

Abstract:We perform an extensive survey of rare and exclusive few-body decays -- defined as those with branching fractions $\mathcal{B} \lesssim 10^{-5}$ and two or three final particles -- of the Higgs, Z, W bosons, and the top quark. Such rare decays can probe physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM), constitute a background for exotic decays into new BSM particles, and provide precise information on quantum chromodynamics factorization with small nonperturbative corrections. We tabulate the theoretical $\mathcal{B}$ values for almost 200 rare decay channels of the four heaviest elementary particles, indicating the current experimental limits in their observation. Among those, we have computed for the first time ultrarare Higgs boson decays into photons and/or neutrinos, H and Z radiative decays into leptonium states, radiative H and Z quark-flavour-changing decays, and semiexclusive top-quark decays into a quark plus a meson, while updating predictions for a few other rare H, Z, and top quark partial widths. The feasibility of measuring each of these unobserved decays is estimated for p-p collisions at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), and for $e^+e^-$ and p-p collisions at the future circular collider (FCC).

Abstract:We investigate the $W$ boson's exotic decay channel, $W \rightarrow \ell\ell\ell \nu$, at the LHC. Although the four-body final states suppress the decay branching ratio, the large production of $W$ bosons makes detecting and precisely measuring this decay probability entirely feasible. Our simulation study indicates that this tiny branching ratio can be measured with sub-percent precision at the HL-LHC. This decay channel can also constrain Standard Model extensions. Using the $ L_\mu-L_\tau$ model as a benchmark, we find that the current bound on the gauge coupling for $Z'$ mass in the range of $[4,75]$ GeV can significantly improve.

Abstract:Searches for exclusively produced W boson pairs in the process pp(gamma gamma) -> pW(+) W- p and an exclusively produced Higgs boson in the process pp(gg) -> pHp have been performed using e(+/-) mu(-/+) final states. These measurements use 20.2 fb(-1) of pp collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at a center-of-mass energy root s = 8 TeV at the LHC. Exclusive production of W+ W- consistent with the Standard Model prediction is found with 3.0 sigma significance. The exclusive W+ W- production cross section is determined to be sigma(gamma gamma -> W+ W- -> e(+/-) mu(-/+) X) = 6.9 +/- 2.2(stat) +/- 1.4(sys) fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set at 95% confidence level as -1.7 x 10(-6) < a(0)(W) / Lambda(2) < 1.7 x 10(-6) GeV-2 and -6.4 x 10(-6) < a(C)(W) / Lambda(2) < 6.3 x 10(-6) GeV-2. A 95% confidence-level upper limit on the total production cross section for an exclusive Higgs boson is set to 1.2 pb.

Abstract:We have presented a theoretical study of exclusive rare $W$-boson decays, $W\to V\ell\bar{\nu}_\ell$ with $V$ denoting a neutral vector meson and $\ell=e$ or $\mu$, in the standard model. The leading-order contributions to these processes are given by $W\to \gamma^*\ell\bar{\nu}_\ell$ with the subsequent $\gamma^*\to V$ transition. Branching fractions of these decay modes, for $V=\rho$, $\omega$, $\phi$, and $J/\Psi$, respectively, have been calculated and predicted around $10^{-6}\sim 10^{-7}$, which are surprisingly larger than those of two-body hadronic radiative decays $W^\pm\to M^\pm \gamma$ with $M$ denoting a pseudoscalar or vector meson. Thus it is expected that rare $W$ decays into a neutral vector meson plus lepton pair may be the promising channels in future experimental facilities with a large number of $W$-boson events produced.

Abstract:Motivated by the LHCb measurement, we analyze the Bs→π+π−ℓ+ℓ− decay in the kinematics region where the pion pairs have invariant masses in the range 0.5–1.3 GeV and muon pairs do not originate from a resonance. The scalar π+π− form factor induced by the strange s¯s current is predicted by the unitarized approach rooted in the chiral perturbation theory. Using the two-hadron light-cone distribution amplitude, we then can derive the Bs→π+π− transition form factor in the light-cone sum rules approach. Merging these quantities, we present our results for differential decay width which can generally agree with the experimental data. More accurate measurements at the LHC and KEKB in future are helpful to validate our formalism and determine the inputs in this approach.
A direct Measurement of the W Boson Width in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV

Abstract:A direct measurement of the total decay width of the W boson G_W is presented using 350 pb-1 of data from ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The width is determined by normalizing predicted signal and background distributions to 230185 W candidates decaying to enu and munu in the transverse-mass region 50 < M_T < 90 GeV and then fitting the predicted shape to 6055 events in the high-M_T region, 90 < M_T < 200 GeV. The result is G_W = 2032 +/- 45 (stat.) +/- 57 (syst.) MeV, consistent with the standard model expectation.

Abstract:In the "Higgs basis" for a generic two-Higgs-doublet model, only one doublet gets a nonzero vacuum expectation value and, under the criterion of minimal flavor violation, the other one is fixed to be either color-singlet or color-octet, referred to, respectively, as the type-III and type-C models. Both of them can naturally avoid large FCNC transitions and provide very interesting phenomena in some low-energy processes. In this paper, we study their effects on exclusive radiative B-meson decays due to the exchange of colorless or colored charged Higgs. It is found that while constraints from the branching ratios are slightly weaker than the ones from the inclusive B -> X-s gamma decay, the isospin asymmetries in exclusive decays provide very complementary bounds on the model parameters. As the two models predict similar corrections to the dipole coefficient C-7(eff), but similar magnitudes with opposite signs to C-8(eff), the branching ratios cannot discriminate the two models, and we have to resort to the direct CP and isospin asymmetries of b -> s processes, which are more sensitive to C-8(eff). Due to the CKM factors vertical bar lambda((d))(u)vertical bar similar to vertical bar lambda((d))(t)vertical bar, the terms proportional to lambda((d))(u) make the observables of b -> d processes exhibit a different dependence on the possible new physics phase. In addition, correlations between the various observables in the exclusive B -> V gamma and the inclusive B -> X-s,X-d gamma decays are investigated, which could provide further insights into the models with more precise experimental measurements and theoretical predictions for these decays.

Abstract:We argue that the B-c exclusive nonleptonic decays are perturbatively calculable. Working in a perturbative QCD model of Brodsky et al, we pay attention to the estimate of the partial widths of the modes B-c --> J/Psi pi(+), J/Psi rho(+), etc., which serve to identify B-c mesons and determine the B-c mass and life time. Our estimations are found to be lower than the other predictions. We note that the spectator ansatz might be misleading in dealing with B-c weak decays. So the results will be potentially important at LHC to measure the B-c meson and to test various models of weak decays of heavy mesons.
Inclusive semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ meson decays at the LHC via a sum-of-exclusive modes technique: possibilities and prospects

Abstract:We propose an approach for measuring the moments of the hadronic invariant mass distribution in semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ meson decays using a sum-of-exclusive technique. Using the present and foreseen knowledge about exclusive semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ decays, we estimate the uncertainties on moments of the kinematic distribution. Semileptonic $B_{s}^{0}$ decays can be described, as their $B^{0}$ counterpart, using the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), with the only difference between the $B_{s}^{0}$ and $B^{0}$ mesons being the $SU(3)_F$ breaking effects that change the numerical values of the non-perturbative HQE parameters. We extract the HQE parameters for the $B_{s}^{0}$ decays from our estimates of the moments, showing the potential of the proposed method. We identify a set of required measurements for a future precision measurement.

Abstract:A search for the exclusive hadronic decays $W^{\pm}\to \pi^{\pm}\gamma$, $W^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}\gamma$ and $W^{\pm}\to \rho^{\pm}\gamma$ is performed using up to $140\, \text{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13\,\text{TeV}$. These rare processes provide a test bench for the quantum chromodynamics factorization formalism used to calculate cross sections at colliders, as well as a probe of $W$ boson coupling to quarks and a new way to measure the $W$ boson mass through fully reconstructed decay products. The search results in the most stringent upper limit to date on the branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(W^{\pm}\to \pi^{\pm}\gamma) < 1.9\times10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(W^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}\gamma) < 1.7\times10^{-6}$, $\mathcal{B}(W^{\pm}\to \rho^{\pm}\gamma) < 5.2\times10^{-6}$ at 95% confidence level.

Abstract:The invariant mass spectrum, forward-backward asymmetry, and lepton polarizations of the exclusive processes B--> K(K*)l(+)l(-),l=mu,tau are analyzed in a supersymmetric context. Special attention is paid to the effects of neutral Higgs bosons (NHB's). Our analysis shows that the branching ratio of the process B --> K mu (+)mu (-) can be quite largely modified by the effects of neutral Higgs bosons and the forward-backward asymmetry would not vanish. For the process B-->K*mu (+)mu (-), the lepton transverse polarization is quite sensitive to the effects of NHB's, while the invariant mass spectrum, forward-backward asymmetry, and lepton longitudinal polarization are not. For both B-->K tau (+)tau (-) and B-->K*tau (+)tau (-), the effects of NHB's are quite significant. The partial decay widths of these processes are also analyzed, and our analysis manifests that, even taking into account the theoretical uncertainties in calculating weak form factors, the effects of NHB's could make supersymmetry show up.

Abstract:The newly-discovered Ξ_cc^++ decays into the Λ_c^+ K^-π^+π^+, but the experimental data has indicated that this decay is not saturated by any two-body intermediate state. In this work, we analyze the multi-body weak decays of doubly heavy baryons Ξ_cc, Ω_cc, Ξ_bc, Ω_bc, Ξ_bb and Ω_bb, in particular the three-body nonleptonic decays and four-body semileptonic decays. We classify various decay modes according to the quark-level transitions and present an estimate of the typical branching fractions for a few golden decay channels. Decay amplitudes are then parametrized in terms of a few SU(3) irreducible amplitudes. With these amplitudes, we find a number of relations for decay widths, which can be examined in future.

Abstract:Associated production of a baryonic ${Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ boson with the $W$ boson can account for the excess in $Wjj$ production observed by the CDF Collaboration at the Tevatron. We analyze other possible channels of this ${Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ at the Tevatron and at the LHC, including $\ensuremath{\gamma}{Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ and $Z{Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ with ${Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}jj$. We show that the chances of confirming this baryonic ${Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ are better at the Tevatron than at the LHC because of the faster growing backgrounds at the LHC. Unfortunately the current systematic uncertainties of the order of 10% cannot yield any significant excess in both the $\ensuremath{\gamma}{Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ and $Z{Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ channels at the Tevatron and also at the LHC. Nevertheless, the search using the $b\overline{b}$ decay mode of ${Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ is much more feasible at the LHC, provided that the branching ratio $B({Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}b\overline{b})>0.1$. In particular, the $W{Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}b\overline{b}$ mode has a signal-to-background ratio larger than 1. Even with $1\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{fb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ luminosity at the LHC, it can lead to a high significance level. The $W{Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\ell}\ensuremath{\nu}b\overline{b}$ and $\ensuremath{\gamma}{Z}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\gamma}b\overline{b}$ are also highly observable at the Tevatron.
