Abstract:The concept of "Superprism" which is used in photonic crystal will be introduced into optical thin film coatings, due to the fact that the group velocity of the light is different as the wavelength in certain special case for the multiplayer thin film coatings. In this paper, The "superprism" effect of multilayer thin film coatings will be presented both from theoretical analysis and experimental results, these researches will create an new application of the thin film coatings not only to be a spectral filter but also can acts as "thin film gratings".

Abstract:A new design method for multilayer thin film spatial demultiplexer based on Superprism phenomenon of periodic photonic crystal was presented. Without complex techniques the multilayer thin film structure was deposited easily with increasing the thickness of the single layer and decreasing the periodicity. The high-level reflectivity thin film stack as 10(9H9L)9H was designed. By the above method and compared with the classic low-level high reflectivity thin film stack of the same geometric thickness, the numerical simulation and the computational results show that the spatial dispersion is large and the designed multiplayer structure is more feasible in practice for fabrication.
Realization of Multichannel Group Delay Based on Thickness-Tapered Photonic Crystals

Abstract:In order to improve monotonously variational group delay characteristic in the conventional one-dimensional photonic crystals(PCs),an improved PCs structure was presented.The properties of rapid phase shift for the mismatch induced by the overlaps of different reflective bands inside PCs were utilized in the structure,and the relationship between phase shift and group delay was used,and thickness-tapered period structures were added at the two ends of the periodical PCs.The property of the reflective band was investigated inside the structure,and distribution of corresponding group delay was studied.Group delay properties between two thickness-tapered structures including high refractive index material and low refractive index material were compared and analyzed.The results indicate that compared with traditional Bragg mirrors,the structure design is more free and the structure can achieve multichannel group delay,realize large and linear dispersion at multiwave of light beams,and have better filtering effect and more superiorities in optical demultiplexer system.

Abstract:Based on the theory of photonic crystals and the framework of a single-channel reflection filter that we presented before, structures of reflection filters with multiple channels are proposed. These structures can overcome some drawbacks of conventional multichannel transmission filters and are much easier to fabricate. We have practically fabricated the reflection filters with two and three channels, and the tested results show approximate agreement with theoretical simulation. Moreover, the superprism effect is also simulated in the single-channel reflection filter, the superiorities to transmission filters are discussed, and these analyses may shed some light on new applications of reflection filters in optical communication and other systems.

Abstract:The negative refraction phenomenon in wavy two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals (PC) is investigated with the isofrequency surfaces of PC and incident medium. The finite-difference time-domain method is used to simulate the negative refraction of incident Gaussian beam with different wavelengths and incident angles. When the incident angle is set at 45 degrees, the linear relation exists between the negative refraction angle and the wavelength within the range from 1485 to 1530nm, which is suitable for the superprism effect. In order to increase the transmission when negative refraction happened at large incident angles, interface projection method is employed.

Abstract:The photnic crystal devices(PhCD)can manipulate the behavior of photons with the advantages such as lower energy loss,smaller size and more easy to integrate on a chip. In this paper some capital design methods and theories of PhCDs were summarized,then the technological difficult points in the fabrication were pointed out and two important coupling technologies were introduced. We also give a perspective about the PhCDs in the end.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of light propagation through photonic crystal (PhC) structures using an effective medium approximation based on equifrequency surface calculations. The procedure is illustrated by calculating bending, splitting and focusing phenomena in a slab of two-dimensional PhC using a Fourier imaging technique. In the passband above the first stop band, wave propagation was found to depend dramatically on both light frequency and incident direction. This propagation anisotropy leads to very large negative refraction along the [11] crystal direction. Light emitted from a line source outside the PhC slab can be focused, divided into subbeams inside the PhC, bent negatively, and refocused again on the other side the slab. The results agree well with the field calculated using a finite-difference time-domain method and can be straightforwardly applied to more complicated PhC structures, such as three-dimensional PhC structures. The imaging properties of a PhC slab are also discussed.

Abstract:The finite-difference time domain and plane-wave expansion methods were used to investigate in detail air-rod-type photonic crystals (PhCs) with ultrahigh-index background materials. Numerical results show that full-angle self-collimations are possible for some frequencies, according to equal-frequency contour analysis. The reflection losses can be reduced and the size of collimated refracted beams can be increased by adding a special interface to the PhC slab.

Abstract:Multi-refraction effects with one polarization in a two-dimensional triangular photonic crystal (PhC) were systematically studied by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The more complicated refraction behaviors can be excited in the higher band regions based on the intricate undulation of one band or the overlap of different bands. A novel non-handedness effect is proposed for the first time with group velocity perpendicular to phase velocity. Furthermore, triple refraction phenomena and special collimation effects of symmetrical positive-negative refraction with the loose incident conditions have been found in different band regions of this PhC. These unique features will provide us with more understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in PhCs and give important guideline for the design of new type optical devices.
Compact High-Resolution Spectrometer Based on Super-Prism and Local-Super-collimation Effects of Photonic Crystal.

Abstract:We propose a design of the compact high-resolution photonic crystal (PhC) spectrometer with a wide working bandwidth based on both super-prism and local-super-collimation (LSC) effects. The optimizing methods, finding the ideal incident angle and oblique angle of PhC for a wider working bandwidth and ideal incident beam width and PhC size for a certain resolution requirement, are developed. Besides the theoretical work, for the first time, the experiment of such a PhC spectrometer is conducted in the microwave frequency range, and the beam-splitting effects for different frequencies in a wide working bandwidth agree very well with the theoretical predictions. According to the scalability, with the condition to control the deviations in the fabrication processes the design could be extended to optical frequency ranges, e.g., infrared, visible-light, and ultraviolet ranges. The spectrometer in optical frequencies can be implemented on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chips as a thin-slab structure so that the operating bandwidth can be expanded further through the multi-layer design. Theoretically, the size of the ultra-high-resolution PhC spectrometer in optical frequency ranges based on our design could be two orders smaller than the traditional design.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an overview of milestone achievements in the research and development of photonic crystal structures and their perspective applications. We highlight challenges in the analysis techniques, device design, efficient coupling techniques, and fabrication and characterization techniques for both planar and three-dimensional structures. We discuss extensively progress to date to overcome various aspects in the available modeling and simulation tools as well as the necessary fabrication procedures to produce functional photonic crystal structures and devices. Hence, the goal of the work presented in this paper is to present key building blocks, which will in turn facilitate the full utilization of the unique spatial and temporal properties of photonic crystal structures.

New Methods for Computing Transmission and Reflection Spectra of Photonic Crystals and Diffraction Gratings

Abstract:Due to their unusual optical properties and significant potentials in applications, photonic crystals (PhCs) have been extensively studied both theoretically and experimentally. Many PhCs devices, such as waveguide bends, branches, frequency filters and waveguide couplers, are important building blocks of integrated optical circuits. Threedimensional (3D) PhCs with a complete bandgap in the optical wavelength region have potential applications, such as ultrahigh quality-factor cavities and zero-threshold lasers. The woodpile structures composed of alternating layers of rods have attracted much attention due to their relatively simple fabrication process compared with other 3D PhCs. Diffraction gratings have been extensively studied for many years, and they are important in practical applications, such as monochromators, spectrometers, lasers, wavelength division multiplexing devices, optical pulse compressing devices, etc. Numerical methods are essential in the design, analysis and optimization of photonic crystals and diffraction gratings. Some of these methods, such as the finitedifference time-domain (FDTD) method, are general methods that can be used to study various aspects of PhCs and diffraction gratings, but their accuracy and efficiency are often limited. FDTD requires a small mesh size to resolve curved material interfaces and often has difficulties truncating periodic structures that extend to infinity. The Fourier modal method (FMM) is suitable for diffraction gratings with uniform layers, but they are not so efficient and may have convergence problems when a general grating with sloping interfaces or a photonic crystal composed of cylinders must be approximated. The boundary integral equation (BIE) method is somewhat complicated to implement, since the integral operators are related to the quasiperiodic Green’s function which requires sophisticated lattice sums techniques to evaluate. The finite element method (FEM) is very general, but it gives rise to large, complex and indefinite linear systems that are expensive to solve. In this thesis, efficient numerical methods based on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) or Neumann-to-Dirichlet (NtD) maps (of unit cells or homogeneous sub-domains) are developed for accurate simulations of two- and three-dimensional photonic crystals and diffraction gratings. For photonic crystals composed of interpenetrating cylinders, i.e. when the radius of the cylinders is larger than √3/4 of the lattice constant, an efficient DtN map method is developed for computing the reflection and transmission spectra. Our method manipulates a pair of operators defined on a set of curves. It is efficient since the wave field in the interiors of the unit cells are never calculated. This is achieved by using the DtN maps which map the wave field on the boundaries of the unit cells to its normal derivative. Abstract:The behavior of light waves in a homogeneous dielectric crystal is the same as that in a continuous medium, because the wavelength of light is much larger than the period of crystal lattice, or say, the wave vector of light is much smaller than the reciprocal vectors of crystal lattice. However, if some microstructure is introduced into a dielectric crystal, forming a superlattice, and if the periods of the superlattice are comparable with the light wavelength, the situation is quite different. The propagation of light wave in the superlattice (classical system) is similar to the electron motion in a periodic potential of crystal lattice (quantum system). Thus, some ideas in solid-state electronics - for example, the reciprocal space, Brillouin zone, dispersion relation and the like - may be used in light wave processes. Such is the case for photonic crystal. On the other hand the interactions between light wave vectors and reciprocal vectors provided by the superlattice may generate some physical effects. It is the interactions that have led to new frequency generations in the quasi-phase matching materials. The main achievements in the field mentioned are reviewed.
Analytic properties of photonic crystal superprism parameters

Abstract:We study the analytic properties of the photonic crystal superprism resolution parameters p , q , and r introduced previously by Baba and Matsumoto [Appl. Phys. Lett. 81, 2325 (2002)], which characterize the potential dispersive power of a superprism. We find closed form expressions for these quantities that greatly simplify their accurate evaluation and reveal significant insights about their behavior. The expressions imply general properties of the parameters which are true for all bands and all photonic crystals. In particular, we demonstrate that all photonic crystals exhibit infinite resolution as measured by the parameter r along particular contours in any photonic band.
Engineering Dispersion Properties of Photonic Crystals for Spatial Beam Routing and Non-Channel Waveguiding

Abstract:In this research we present various implementations of novel photonic devices using photonic crystals, by engineering the dispersive properties of these periodic structures in a region outside the bandgap. Applications such as spatial beam routing can be attained through careful optimization of various Equi-Frequency Contours. The remarkable difference for the non-conventional-circular-shaped EFC in PhCs opens up a new dimension for the dispersion engineering of wide planar devices and applications based on the shape of the EFC obtained. Circular, square, star, or hexagonal are various possible shapes of EFC that can be achieved and/or engineered. For certain applications specific EFC shapes can be optimal while others are not. In addition to non-channel waveguiding through the periodic structure with sharp bends. We further present reverse engineering of the periodic structures dispersive properties to design various lattice arrangements. Numerical analyses were performed using both plane-wave expansion method as well as the FDTD method.

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) has offered a powerful means to mold the flow of light and manipulate light-matter interaction at subwavelength scale. Silicon has a large refraction index and low loss in infrared wavelengths, which makes it an important optical material. And silicon has been widely used for integrated photonics applications. In this paper, we have reviewed some recent theoretical and experimental works in our group on infrared two-dimensional (2D) air-bridged silicon PhC slab devices that are based on both band gap and band structure engineering. We have designed, fabricated, and characterized a series of PhC waveguides with novel geometries, PhC high-quality (high-Q) cavity, and channel drop filters utilizing resonant coupling between waveguide and cavity. These devices are aimed to construct a more flexible network of transport channel for infrared light at micrometer/nanometer scale. We have also explored the remarkable dispersion properties of PhCs by engineering the band structures to achieve negative refraction, self-collimation, superprism, and other anomalous dispersion behaviors of infrared light beam. Furthermore, we have designed and fabricated a PhC structure with negative refraction effect and used scanning near-field optical microscopy to observe the negative refraction beam. Finally, we have designed and realized a PhC structure that exhibits a self-collimation effect in a wide angle range and with a large bandwidth. Our works presented in this review show that PhCs have a strong power of controlling propagation of light at micrometer/nanometer scale and possess a great potential of applications in integrated photonic circuits.
Long-wavelength Behavior of Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystals

Abstract:We solve analytically the multiple-scattering equations for two-dimensional photonic crystals in the long-wavelength limit. Different approximations of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities are presented from a unified pseudopotential point of view. The nature of the so-called plasmon-polariton bands is clarified. Its frequency as a function of the wire radius is discussed. The corresponding tunable "magnetic surface plasmon" band is pointed out.

Abstract:Anomalous optical transmission phenomena have ever been discovered in various metamaterials, which can be modulated more easily in Photonic crystals (PhCs). Compared with the regular PhCs composed of round rods closely packed in air, the equal frequency contours (EFC) of honeycomb lattice PhCs constituted by trigonal rods are more rounded and more suitable to realize the all-angle left-handed negative refraction (AALNR) in the low band region. Due to the hex EFC distribution, the regular PhC can be applied in the optical collimator design. In the higher band regions, the more complicated refraction behaviors can be excited based on the intricate undulation of one band or the overlap of different bands in PhCs. These unique features will provide us with more understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in PhCs and give important guideline for the design of new type optical devices.
Diffraction of transmission light through triangular apertures in array of retro-reflective micro-prisms

Abstract:The array of micro-prisms was described by model of multi-period blazed gratings consisting of triangular apertures. The origins of hexagram-shaped diffraction patterns were interpreted based on multiple-beam interference and diffraction array theorem. The relation between zonal /line ghost fringes and imperfectly fabricated array structures was analyzed. Geometrical performances (e.g., the dihedral angle of micro-prism) were tested by measuring the features of diffraction patterns of samples from three retro-reflective sheeting manufacturers.
