Abstract:In ab initio indexing, for a given diffraction/scattering pattern, the unit-cell parameters and the Miller indices assigned to reflections in the pattern are determined simultaneously. `Ab initio' means a process performed without any good prior information on the crystal lattice. Newly developed ab initio indexing software is frequently reported in crystallography. However, it is not widely recognized that use of a Bravais lattice determination method, which is tolerant of experimental errors, can simplify indexing algorithms and increase their success rates. One of the goals of this article is to collect information on the lattice-basis reduction theory and its applications. The main result is a Bravais lattice determination algorithm for 2D lattices, along with a mathematical proof that it works even for parameters containing large observational errors. It uses two lattice-basis reduction methods that seem to be optimal for different symmetries, similarly to the algorithm for 3D lattices implemented in the CONOGRAPH software. In indexing, a method for error-stable unit-cell identification is also required to exclude duplicate solutions. Several methods are introduced to measure the difference in unit cells known in crystallography and mathematics.
Machine learning techniques for the ab initio Bravais lattice determination

Abstract:Machine learning‐based algorithms have been widely applied recently in different areas due to its ability to solve problems in all fields. In this research, machine learning techniques classifying the Bravais lattices from a conventional X‐ray diffraction diagram have been applied. Indexing algorithms are an essential tool of the preliminary protocol for the structural determination problem in crystallography. The task of reverting the obtained information in reciprocal lattice to direct space is a complex issue. As an alternative way to afford this problem, different machine learning algorithms have been applied and a comparison between them has been conducted. The obtained accuracy was 95.9% using 10‐fold cross‐validation (while the best result obtained so far has been 84%). A model based on Bragg positions was our unique predictor, allowing us to obtain the set of the interplanar lattice distances. Our model was successfully checked with a complex example. In addition, our procedure incorporates the following advantages: robustness versus imprecision in data acquisition and reduction of the amount of necessary input data. This is the first time so far that such classification has been carried out in true ab initio condition.

Abstract:A real-space renormalization-group approach for calculating the exact electronic Green function of an infinite Thue-Morse chain is presented. This approach is based on a renormalization transformation introduced according to the self-similar structure of the chain and the recursion relations for the matrix elements of the Green function. Numerical results for the local density of states for the off-diagonal model show the existence of the extended states.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 353-367, March 2024. A lattice of integers is the collection of all linear combinations of a set of vectors for which all entries of the vectors are integers and all coefficients in the linear combinations are also integers. Lattice reduction refers to the problem of finding a set of vectors in a given lattice such that the collection of all integer linear combinations of this subset is still the entire original lattice and so that the Euclidean norms of the subset are reduced. The present paper proposes simple, efficient iterations for lattice reduction which are guaranteed to reduce the Euclidean norms of the basis vectors (the vectors in the subset) monotonically during every iteration. Each iteration selects the basis vector for which projecting off (with integer coefficients) the components of the other basis vectors along the selected vector minimizes the Euclidean norms of the reduced basis vectors. Each iteration projects off the components along the selected basis vector and efficiently updates all information required for the next iteration to select its best basis vector and perform the associated projections.

Electronic properties of one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices: Green's function renormalization group approach

Abstract:Using the inflation-deflation symmetry, we have developed a new real-space decimation approach to study the electronic properties of one-dimensional quasiperiodic lattices. The key result is the construction of a compact renormalization group that allows simple calculation of the average Green's function and the average density of states to any degree. The Fibonacci and the generalized Fibonacci lattices are used to demonstrate the method. Numerical results for the average density of states of these lattices show a good agreement with the results obtained by other methods. This confirms the validity and the efficiency of the approach.
Recursive lattice reduction -- A framework for finding short lattice vectors

Abstract:We propose a recursive lattice reduction framework for finding short non-zero vectors or dense sublattices of a lattice. The framework works by recursively searching for dense sublattices of dense sublattices (or their duals) with progressively lower rank. When the procedure encounters a recursive call on a lattice $L$ with relatively low rank, we simply use a known algorithm to find a shortest non-zero vector in $L$. This new framework is complementary to basis reduction algorithms, which similarly work to reduce an $n$-dimensional lattice problem with some approximation factor $\gamma$ to a lower-dimensional exact lattice problem in some lower dimension $k$, with a tradeoff between $\gamma$, $n$, and $k$. Our framework provides an alternative and arguably simpler perspective. For example, our algorithms can be described at a high level without explicitly referencing any specific basis of the lattice, the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization, or even projection (though, of course, concrete implementations of algorithms in this framework will likely make use of such things). We present a number of instantiations of our framework. Our main concrete result is an efficient reduction that matches the tradeoff achieved by the best-known basis reduction algorithms. This reduction also can be used to find dense sublattices with any rank $\ell$ satisfying $\min\{\ell,n-\ell\} \leq n-k+1$, using only an oracle for SVP in $k$ dimensions, with slightly better parameters than what was known using basis reduction. We also show a simple reduction with the same tradeoff for finding short vectors in quasipolynomial time, and a reduction from finding dense sublattices of a high-dimensional lattice to this problem in lower dimension. Finally, we present an automated search procedure that finds algorithms in this framework that (provably) achieve better approximations with fewer oracle calls.

Simple Lattice Basis Computation -- The Generalization of the Euclidean Algorithm

Abstract:The Euclidean algorithm is one of the oldest algorithms known to mankind. Given two integral numbers $a_1$ and $a_2$, it computes the greatest common divisor (gcd) of $a_1$ and $a_2$ in a very elegant way. From a lattice perspective, it computes a basis of the sum of two one-dimensional lattices $a_1 \mathbb{Z}$ and $a_2 \mathbb{Z}$ as $\gcd(a_1,a_2) \mathbb{Z} = a_1 \mathbb{Z} + a_2 \mathbb{Z}$. In this paper, we show that the classical Euclidean algorithm can be adapted in a very natural way to compute a basis of a general lattice $L(a_1, \ldots , a_m)$ given vectors $a_1, \ldots , a_m \in \mathbb{Z}^n$ with $m> \mathrm{rank}(a_1, \ldots ,a_m)$. Similar to the Euclidean algorithm, our algorithm is very easy to describe and implement and can be written within 12 lines of pseudocode. While the Euclidean algorithm halves the largest number in every iteration, our generalized algorithm halves the determinant of a full rank subsystem leading to at most $\log (\det B)$ many iterations, for some initial subsystem $B$. Therefore, we can compute a basis of the lattice using at most $\tilde{O}((m-n)n\log(\det B) + mn^{\omega-1}\log(||A||_\infty))$ arithmetic operations, where $\omega$ is the matrix multiplication exponent and $A = (a_1, \ldots, a_m)$. Even using the worst case Hadamard bound for the determinant, our algorithm improves upon existing algorithm. Another major advantage of our algorithm is that we can bound the entries of the resulting lattice basis by $\tilde{O}(n^2\cdot ||A||_{\infty})$ using a simple pivoting rule. This is in contrast to the typical approach for computing lattice basis, where the Hermite normal form (HNF) is used. In the HNF, entries can be as large as the determinant and hence can only be bounded by an exponential term.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new index assignment scheme for the 3-description case, which aims to find a 3-tuple sublattice points to represent a fine lattice point. The design is made such that each edge of the triangle formed by the 3-tuple points needs to be as short as possible while the gravity center of the triangle is as close as possible to the fine lattice point. With a delicate sublattice partition, a well designed construction and mapping is developed to minimize the expected distortion

Abstract:We consider the physical implementation of a 2D optical lattice with schemes involving 3 and 4 light fields. We illustrate the wide range of geometries available to the 3 beam lattice, and compare the general potential properties of the two lattice schemes. Numerically calculating the band structure we obtain the Wannier states and evaluate the parameters of the Bose-Hubbard models relevant to these lattices. Using these results we demonstrate lattices that realize Bose-Hubbard models with 2, 4, or 6 nearest neighbors, and quantify the extent that these different lattices effect the superfluid to Mott-insulator transition.

Abstract:Lattices and their underlying symmetries play a central role in determining the physical properties and applications of many natural and engineered materials. This research offers a comprehensive solution to a long-standing challenge regarding the lattice-based materials: how to systematically construct a lattice and transform it among different symmetric configurations in a predictable, scalable, and reversible way. By bridging the lattice geometry and rigid-folding kinematics of a group of origamis consisting of generic degree-4 vertices, we successfully construct all types of two- and three-dimensional Bravais lattices, and demonstrate that they can undergo all diffusionless phase transformations via rigid folding (i.e., dilation, extension, contraction, shear, and shuffle). Such folding-induced lattice transformations can trigger fundamental lattice-symmetry switches, which can either maintain or reconstruct the nearest-neighbor relationships according to a continuous symmetry measure. This study can foster the next generation of transformable lattice structures and materials with on-demand property tuning capabilities.

Then we analyze the complexities of the nearest plane algorithm and round-off algorithm on semik-reduced basis, which, compared with L. Identifying topological edge states in 2D optical lattices using light scattering

Abstract:We recently proposed in a Letter [Physical Review Letters 108 255303] a novel scheme to detect topological edge states in an optical lattice, based on a generalization of Bragg spectroscopy. The scope of the present article is to provide a more detailed and pedagogical description of the system - the Hofstadter optical lattice - and probing method. We first show the existence of topological edge states, in an ultra-cold gas trapped in a 2D optical lattice and subjected to a synthetic magnetic field. The remarkable robustness of the edge states is verified for a variety of external confining potentials. Then, we describe a specific laser probe, made from two lasers in Laguerre-Gaussian modes, which captures unambiguous signatures of these edge states. In particular, the resulting Bragg spectra provide the dispersion relation of the edge states, establishing their chiral nature. In order to make the Bragg signal experimentally detectable, we introduce a "shelving method", which simultaneously transfers angular momentum and changes the internal atomic state. This scheme allows to directly visualize the selected edge states on a dark background, offering an instructive view on topological insulating phases, not accessible in solid-state experiments.

New Lattice Based Cryptographic Constructions

Abstract:We introduce the use of Fourier analysis on lattices as an integral part of a lattice based construction. The tools we develop provide an elegant description of certain Gaussian distributions around lattice points. Our results include two cryptographic constructions which are based on the worst-case hardness of the unique shortest vector problem. The main result is a new public key cryptosystem whose security guarantee is considerably stronger than previous results ($O(n^{1.5})$ instead of $O(n^7)$). This provides the first alternative to Ajtai and Dwork's original 1996 cryptosystem. Our second result is a family of collision resistant hash functions which, apart from improving the security in terms of the unique shortest vector problem, is also the first example of an analysis which is not based on Ajtai's iterative step. Surprisingly, both results are derived from one theorem which presents two indistinguishable distributions on the segment $[0,1)$. It seems that this theorem can have further applications and as an example we mention how it can be used to solve an open problem related to quantum computation.

Abstract:Lattices with minimal normalized second moments are designed using a new numerical optimization algorithm. Starting from a random lower-triangular generator matrix and applying stochastic gradient descent, all elements are updated towards the negative gradient, which makes it the most efficient algorithm proposed so far for this purpose. A graphical illustration of the theta series, called theta image, is introduced and shown to be a powerful tool for converting numerical lattice representations into their underlying exact forms. As a proof of concept, optimized lattices are designed in dimensions up to 16. In all dimensions, the algorithm converges to either the previously best known lattice or a better one. The dual of the 15-dimensional laminated lattice is conjectured to be optimal in its dimension and its exact normalized second moment is computed.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to introduce and analyze the polynomial time lattice basis reduction algorithm first described by Arjen Lenstra, Hendrik Lenstra, and László Lovász in 1982. We begin by introducing the shortest vector problem, which motivates the underlying components of the LLL algorithm. Then, we introduce the details of the algorithm itself, followed by proofs of the correctness and runtime of the algorithm in complete detail, assuming only a basic linear algebra background and an understanding of big O notation. Finally, we apply the LLL algorithm to the shortest vector problem and explore other applications of the algorithm in various mathematical settings.

Abstract:Motivated by the problems of lattice mixture identification and grain irregularity detection, we present a framework for lattice pattern representation and comparison and propose an efficient algorithm for lattice separation. We define new scale and shape descriptors, which considerably reduce the size of equivalence classes of lattice bases. These finite number of equivalence relations are fully characterized by the modular group theory. We construct the lattice space based on the equivalent descriptors and define a metric to accurately quantify the visual similarities and differences between lattices. We introduce the lattice identification and separation algorithm (LISA), which identifies individual lattice patterns from superposed lattices. LISA finds lattice candidates from the high responses in the image spectrum, then extracts different layers of lattice patterns one by one. By analyzing the frequency components, we explore the intricate dependency of LISA's performances on particle radius, lattice density, and relative translations. Various numerical experiments are presented to show LISA's robustness against a large number of lattice layers, moiré patterns, and missing particles.
