Abstract:Since ancient times, Tremella aurantialba has been proposed to have medicinal and food benefits. Modern phytochemistry and pharmacological studies have demonstrated that polysaccharides, the main components from T. aurantialba appear to be an all-round talent resisting a variety of chronic inflammatory diseases and protecting against different types of tumors, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. These health and pharmacological benefits have gained much attention from scholars around the world. Further, more and more methods for polysaccharides extraction, purification, structure identification have been proposed. Significantly, the bioactivity of fungus polysaccharides is affected by many factors such as extraction and purification conditions and chemical structure. This paper provides an overview of recent advances in the isolation, structural features and biological effects of polysaccharides derived from T. aurantialba , covers recent advances in the field and outlines future research and applications of these polysaccharides.

Abstract:The chemical structures of the polysaccharides from fruit body, spore, and submerged culture of T. fuciformis are similar. T. fuciformis polysaccharides mainly consist of heteropolysaccharides with α-(1→3)-linked D-mannan as the backbone chain, exhibiting diverse activities such as immunomodulation, antitumor, antioxidation, and antiaging. The present paper reviews the structural characteristics, various activities and structure -activity correlation of T. fuciformis polysaccharides.

Abstract:Sulfated polysaccharides are polysaccharide of which hydroxys of single sugar molecules are replaced by sulfate groups.In recent years,sulfated polysaccharides have aroused more and more concern for their anticoagulant activity and lower side effects compared with heparin.There are two forms of sulfated polysaccharides-natural sulfated polysaccharides and chemically sulfated polysaccharides,both of which have good anticoagulant activity.As the core of improving their functional properties,the structure-activity relationship of sulfated polysaccharides in anticoagulation is extensive studied around world.The sulfate methods,the anticoagulant activity of sulfated polysaccharides and mechanisms are reviewed.

Abstract:Auricularia auricula (A. auricula), is a medicinal and edible fungus in China for thousands of years with rich nutrition and delicious taste. The main active ingredient of A. auricula is polysaccharide, which has antitumor, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, and immune regulation bioactivities. It is widely recognized that the biological activity of polysaccharides is closely related to the chemical structure and advanced structure. In terms of polysaccharides extracted from A. auricula (AAPs), there were distinguished structures reported due to the different original resources and extraction methods, leading to various bioactivities. However, the structure-activity relationship of AAPs has scarcely been reviewed till now. In addition, polysaccharides were found to have specific self-assembly properties recently, together with their bioactivities, endowing them with unique physicochemical properties. Nowadays, an increasing number of polysaccharides, such as cellulose, chitin, and pectin, have been used to construct various functional materials in the fields of food, cosmetics, and biomedical materials. Therefore, the construction of functional materials by AAPs is of great research significance. This article aims to provide a systematic review of the structure-activity relationship of AAPs and summarize the functional materials constructed based on AAPs to provide theoretical references for further research and application of AAPs.

Abstract:Natural polysaccharides are macromolecular substances with a wide range of biological activities. The structural modification of polysaccharides by chemical means can enhance their biological activity. This paper reviews the latest research reports on the chemical modification of natural polysaccharides. At present, the modification methods of polysaccharides mainly include sulfation, phosphorylation, carboxymethylation, socialization, methylation and acetylation. The chemical and physical structures of the modified polysaccharides were detected via ultraviolet spectroscopy, FT-IR, high-performance liquid chromatography, ultraviolet spectroscopy, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance and scanning electron microscopy. Modern pharmacological studies have shown that the modified polysaccharide has various biological activities, such as antioxidant, antitumor, immune regulation, antiviral, antibacterial and anticoagulant functions in vitro. This review provides fresh ideas for the research and application of polysaccharide structure modification.

Abstract:Astragalus polysaccharides(APS)is one of the main active ingredient of Astragli radix.Modern phytochemistry and pharmacological experiments have proved that polysaccharide is one of the major active ingredients in Astragli radix with various important bioactivities,such as immunomodulation,antioxidant,antitumor,anti-diabetes,antiviral,hepatoprotection,anti-inflammation,anti-atherosclerosis,hematopoiesis and neuroprotection.Therefore,the structural features and biological activities of Astragalus polysaccharides become a hot topic in the field of pharmacy.The aim of the present review is to summarize previous and current references and give a comprehensive summary regarding the structural features and biological activities of Astragli radix polysaccharides in order to provide new insight for further development of these macromolecules.

Abstract:Objective:to investigate the structure and in vitro immunomodulatory activity of polysaccharides from bamboo shavings (BSP).Methods:the structure was analyzed by the methods of methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy;the in vitro immunomodulatory activity was evaluated by the assays of mouse splenic lymphocyte proliferation,the phagocytosis of neutral red and NO secretion of RAW264.7 cell.Results:BSP was O-acetyl-(4-O-methylglucurono)-arabinoxylans consisting of a linear (l→4)-β-D-xylopyranosyl backbone decorated with branches at O-2 of 4-O-methylglucuronic acid units and acetyl groups or O-3 of α-L-arabinofuranosyl and acetyl groups.The structural element could be expressed as below:1,4-β-D-[2-O-Ac][3-O-Ac][4-O-Me-D-GlcpA-(1→2)][α-L-Araf-(1→3)]-xylp;BSP could evidently strengthen concanavalin A or lipopolysaccharide-induced splenic lymphocyte proliferation at 10-100μg/mL;BSP could significantly enhance the phagocytosis activity and NO production of RAW264.7 cell at 10-1 000 μg/mL in a dose-dependent manner.Conclusion:BSP exhibits excellent immunostimulatory activity in vitro,and can be considered as an ideal source of bio-active polysaccharides due to the abundance of its raw material.

Natural polysaccharides are obtained mainly by extraction and purification, which may serve as reliable procedures to enhance the quality and the yield of polysaccharide products. Moreover, structural analysis of polysaccharides proves to be promising and crucial for elucidating structure–activity relationships. Therefore, this report summarizes the recent developments and applications in extraction, separation, purification, and structural analysis of polysaccharides of plants and fungi.

Consequently, the research progresses and future prospects of fungal polysaccharides must be systematically reviewed to promote their better understanding. Moreover, the structure–activity relationships of fungal polysaccharides were emphasized and discussed. This review can provide scientific basis for the research and industrial utilization of fungal polysaccharides.

Abstract:Traditional Chinese medicines (TCM), as the unique natural resource, are rich in polysaccharides, polyphenols, proteins, amino acid, fats, vitamins, and other components. Hence, TCM have high medical and nutritional values. Polysaccharides are one of the most important active components in TCM. Growing reports have indicated that TCM polysaccharides (TCMPs) have various biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-aging, immunomodulatory, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and other activities. Hence, the research progresses and future prospects of TCMPs must be systematically reviewed to promote their better understanding. The aim of this review is to provide comprehensive and systematic recombinant information on the extraction, purification, structure, chemical modification, biological activities, and potential mechanism of TCMPs to support their therapeutic effects and health functions. The findings provide new valuable insights and theoretical basis for future research and development of TCMPs.

Abstract:<p>Polysaccharides have various biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-tumor, antiviral, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-radiation, hypoglycemic and lipid lowering, immune regulation, etc. Although many polysaccharides have been proved to have various biological activities, in the research process, it has been found that more polysaccharides in nature do not have biological activities or have low activities, and some polysaccharides have poor activities due to lack of certain groups. While others are due to polysaccharide with too large molecular weight, because its molecular weight is too large to smoothly enter cells and thus cannot exert its activity. For the former, we need to adopt molecular grafting modification. This kind of modification method is mainly chemical modification method, which increases the functional groups and molecular weight of various polysaccharides to improve their biological activity. For the latter, we need to adopt molecular degradation modification, which includes biodegradation, physical degradation, chemical degradation and other means to improve the solubility of polysaccharide in water phase by reducing its molecular weight, thus improving its activity. This article mainly introduces polysaccharide structure modification methods that have been widely used in recent years.</p>

Abstract:Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo ( D. officinale ) is a traditional medicinal and food homologous plant that has been used for thousands of years in folk medicine and nutritious food. Recent studies have shown that polysaccharide is one of the main biologically active components in D. officinale . D. officinale polysaccharides possess several biological activities, such as anti-oxidant, heptatoprotective, immunomodulatory, gastrointestinal protection, hypoglycemic, and anti-tumor activities. In the past decade, polysaccharides have been isolated from D. officinale by physical and enzymatic methods and have been subjected to structural characterization and activity studies. Progress in extraction, purification, structural characterization, bioactivity, structure-activity relationship, and possible bioactivity mechanism of polysaccharides D. officinale were reviewed. In order to provide reference for the in-depth study of D. officinale polysaccharides and the application in functional food and biomedical research.

Abstract:Tricholoma Matsutake is an important edible mushroom that has been artificially cultivated and used as a food and medicinal ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. In the past decades, many researchers have reported that Tricholoma Matsutake Polysaccharides (TMP) possess various bioactivities, including anti-tumor, immunomodulatory, anti-oxidation and anti-aging. The structural characteristics of TMP were studied by GC-MS, LC-MS, NMR, and FT-IR, and the structure-activity relationship of TMP biomolecular was analyzed. This paper reviews the progress of TMP extraction, purification, structure characterization and application.

Abstract:Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz (AM), traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with many medicinal values, has a long usage history in China and other oriental countries. The phytochemical investigation revealed the presence of volatile oils, polysaccharides, lactones, flavonoids, and others. The polysaccharides from AM are important medicinal components, mainly composed of glucose (Glc), galactose (Gal), rhamnose (Rha), arabinose (Ara), mannose (Man), galacturonic acid (GalA) and xylose (Xyl). It also showed valuable bioactivities, such as immunomodulatory, antitumour, gastroprotective and intestinal health-promoting, hepatoprotective, hypoglycaemic as well as other activities. At the same time, based on its special structure and pharmacological activity, it can also be used as immune adjuvant, natural plant supplement and vaccine adjuvant. The aim of this review is to summarize and critically analyze up-to-data on the chemical compositions, biological activities and applications of polysaccharide from AM based on scientific literatures in recent years.

Abstract:The sulfated polysaccharides have attracted more and more attention because they have various biological activities. The study has systematically summarized current knowledge about synthesis, structural characteristics, biological activities, and molecular mechanisms of sulfated polysaccharides. Furthermore, the current problems of sulfide polysaccharides modification affecting the biological activities have analyzed and discussed. Polysaccharides are another important class of bioactive macromolecules in organisms, in addition to proteins and nucleic acids. Abstract:Pharmacotherapy using natural substances can be currently regarded as a very promising future alternative to conventional therapy. As biological macromolecules, polysaccharide together with protein and polynucleotide, are extremely important biomacromoleules which play important roles in the growth and development of living organism. Polysaccharide is important component of higher plants, membrane of the animal cell and the cell wall of microbes. It is also closely related to the physiological functions. Recently, increasing attention has been paid on polysaccharides as an important class of bioactive natural products. Numerous researches have demonstrated the bioactivities of natural polysaccharides, which lead to the application of polysaccharides in the treatment of disease. In this paper, the various aspects of the investigation results of the bioactivities of polysaccharides were summarized, including its diversity pharmacological applications, such as immunoregulatory, anti-tumor, anti-virus, antioxidation, and hypoglycemic activity, and their application of polysaccharides in the treatment of disease are also discussed. We hope this review can offer some theoretical basis and inspiration for the mechanism study of the bioactivity of polysaccharides.

Abstract:Polysaccharide is an important natural active ingredient, which has many biological activities such as antioxidation, antitumor and immunomodulation. And it has been widely used in biomedicine and health food. However, the huge molecular weight, complex spatial structure and vague structure-activity relationship of polysaccharide greatly limit the development and utilization of polysaccharide resources. Degradation can achieve structural modification and improve biological activity by reducing molecular weight and affecting its physicochemical properties and spatial conformation. Therefore, degradation may be an effective strategy to produce polysaccharides with excellent biological activity and analyze their structure-activity relationship. In this paper, the degradation methods of polysaccharides and the effects of degradation on their physicochemical properties and biological activities were reviewed. In addition, the development and application of polysaccharide degradation research and the existing problems were summarized and analyzed. This paper provided theoretical basis for polysaccharide degradation, development and utilization and structure-activity relationship research.

Abstract:Plants of the genus Atractylodes are perennial herbaceous plants in the family Asteraceae, whose rhizome is often used in the production of medicines and health products. There are 6 main species in this genus, namely A. macrocephala , A. lancea , A. chinensis , A. carlinoides , A. koreana and A. japonica . Among them, A. lancea and A. macrocephala are the most extensively investigated. Polysaccharides as the main active ingredients extracted and isolated from plants in this genus, show good pharmacological activities in vivo and in vitro , such as immunomodulatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic and intestinal protective activities. The pharmacological activities of polysaccharides are closely related to their extraction methods and physicochemical properties. This article discusses the extraction and separation methods, molecular weight, monosaccharide composition, chemical structure characteristics and pharmacological activities of polysaccharides from the genus Atractylodes . Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the relationship of monosaccharide composition, relative molecular weight and structural modifications with the pharmacological activities of polysaccharides of the genus Atractylodes was carried out, which provided a reference for the development and utility of polysaccharides.

Abstract:In recent decades, the polysaccharides from the medicinal plants have attracted a lot of attention due to their significant bioactivities, such as anti-tumor activity, antioxidant activity, anticoagulant activity, antidiabetic activity, radioprotection effect, anti-viral activity, hypolipidemic and immunomodulatory activities, which make them suitable for medicinal applications. Previous studies have also shown that medicinal plant polysaccharides are non-toxic and show no side effects. Based on these encouraging observations, most researches have been focusing on the isolation and identification of polysaccharides, as well as their bioactivities. A large number of bioactive polysaccharides with different structural features and biological effects from medicinal plants have been purified and characterized. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the most recent developments in physiochemical, structural features and biological activities of bioactive polysaccharides from a number of important medicinal plants, such as polysaccharides from Astragalus membranaceus, Dendrobium plants, Bupleurum, Cactus fruits, Acanthopanax senticosus, Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, Aloe barbadensis Miller, and Dimocarpus longan Lour. Moreover, the paper has also been focused on the applications of bioactive polysaccharides for medicinal applications. Recent studies have provided evidence that polysaccharides from medicinal plants can play a vital role in bioactivities. Abstract:Natural polysaccharides are macromolecular substances with great potential owing to their wide biological activity and low toxicity. However, not all polysaccharides have significant pharmacodynamic activity; hence, appropriate chemical modification methods can be selected according to the unique structural characteristics of polysaccharides to assist in enhancing and promoting the presentation of their biological activities. This review summarizes research progress on modified polysaccharides, including common chemical modification methods, the change in biological activity following modification, and the factors affecting the biological activity of chemically modified polysaccharides. At the same time, the difficulties and challenges associated with the structural modification of natural polysaccharides are also outlined in this review. Thus, research on polysaccharide structure modification is critical for improving the development and utilization of sugar products.
