Abstract:This study aims to produce a 3D single integrated reinforcement for a metal/metal composite to enhance the brittleness and toughness of Mg-7Al-1Ca as the matrix. Cu lattice structure has chosen as reinforcement with strut diameters of 2, 2.5, and 3 mm. The lattice structures and composites were produced by investment and gravity casting methods, respectively. The mechanical response of this composite has evaluated through a uniaxial compression test, where the maximum tolerated stress of all samples is approximately 200 MPa. The fracture mechanism of this composite is based on the growth of microcracks from the brittle intermetallic compounds toward the interface of the matrix and the reinforcement. The 3D single integrated reinforcement not only controls the microcracks but also improves the toughness from 14 to 38 MJ m −3 , which is approximately 2.7 times. The study suggests that using 3D single integrated reinforcements can improve the mechanical behavior of brittle matrixes.
