Abstract:Aromatic polyesters bearing pendent carboxyl functionalities were prepared by interfacial polycondensation of diphenolic acid, bisphenol A and isophthaloyl chloride with tetrabutylammonium chloride as phase transfer catalyst. The copolyester composition was confirmed with HPLC analysis. The polymerization process and composition of the copolyesters were examined by considering influences of reaction temperatures, time, ratio of feeds, agitation speeds.

Abstract:The protecting-group-free synthesis of reactive functional group containing poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) is reported. The synthesis of the PEAs is based on the nucleophilic ring-opening polyaddition of terephthalaziridine (TP-Az) with comonomers baring carboxylic acid and phenols as nucleophiles. The comonomers also contained the reactive functional groups aldehyde, ketone, ester, alcohol, furan, disulfide and siloxane, which were incorporated into the resulting PEAs without any detectable side reactions. A multicomponent polymerization was conducted to further demonstrate the versatility of this method. These PEAs are amorphous with high thermal stability (T d,5 % : 231–324 °C) and a have wide range of glass transition temperatures (T g ) (32–142 °C). The disulfide and siloxane-containing copolymers PEAs selectively degrade in the presence of dithiothreitol and fluoride respectively. The PEAs also underwent alkaline hydrolysis to yield a potential TP-Az, potentially facilitating chemical recycling of these PEAs.

The reaction proceeds through double C−H activation (arene and alkene) and subsequent C−C oxidative coupling (Fujiwara–Moritani reaction), processes catalyzed by Pd and assisted by Ag. The obtained products 3 a–3 g are isosteric analogs of phenylalanine and are obtained with high selectivity. Thus, geometrical E‐isomers have been obtained in all studied cases, however mixtures of ortho‐/meta‐/para‐isomers are observed when the activated position in the starting arene 2 is considered.

Abstract:Among natural and synthetic polymers, main-chain phosphorus-containing polyacids (PCPAs) (polyphosphodiesters), stand in a unique position at the intersection of chemistry, physics, biology and medicine. The structural similarity of polyphosphodiesters PCPAs to natural nucleic and teichoic acids, their biocompatibility, mimicking to biomolecules providing the 'stealth effect', high bone mineral affinity of polyphosphodiesters resulting in biomineralization at physiological conditions, and adjustable hydrolytic stability of polyphosphodiesters are the basis for various biomedical, industrial and household applications of this type of polymers. In the present review, we discuss the synthesis, properties and actual applications of polyphosphodiesters.
Synthesis, characterization and in vitro degradation of a new family of alternate poly(ester-anhydrides) based on aliphatic and aromatic diacids

Abstract:A new family of alternate poly(ester-anhydrides) containing aliphatic and aromatic diacids were synthesized. The dicarboxylic acids were obtained by derivatization of p-hydroxy benzoic acid at the hydroxy terminus with cyclic anhydride (adipic anhydride and succinic anhydride) and subsequently polymerized via the corresponding mixed anhydrides by melt polycondensation. DSC traces revealed that the polymers had low Tg (<40°C) and no crystallinity. The static contact angle measurements indicated that the poly(ester-anhydrides) were more hydrophobic than poly(d,l-lactide) and poly(adipic anhydride). In vitro degradation of the polymers was also investigated in pH 7.4 PBS at 37°C. It was found that degradation rate of the poly(ester-anhydrides) increased with p-carboxy phenyl adipic monoester (CPA) content in the polymers and the degradation duration could be adjusted from ca. 20 days to ca. 2 months. Erosion curve of poly(p-carboxy phenyl adipic monoester anhydride) (PCPA) was characterized by a linear region of weight loss at nearly constant rate in the first 7 days (ca. 80% of weight loss) followed by a gradual decrease region. IR and SEM analysis showed that significant erosion of PCPA occurred in the outer layer and no apparent erosion could be seen in the inner layer of the degrading sample after 7-day degradation. The poly(ester-anhydrides) may be used as either anti-infective polymeric prodrugs or matrices for drug delivery.

Abstract:Five novel poly(aryl ether ketone ketone ether ketone ketone) with carboxylic ester side groups(PEKKEKK-E)s were synthesized from poly(aryl ether ketone ketone ether ketone ketone) having pendent carboxyl groups(PEKKEKK-A) and alcohols,in the presence of 1,2-dichoroethane and thionyl chloride as acylchlorination reagent,pyridine as a catalyst.While PEKKEKK-A was prepared from trimellitic anhydride chloride(TMAC) and 1,4-bis(4-phenoxybenzoyl) benzene(p-EKKE) by low temperature solution polycondensation.PEKKEKK-Es were characterized by FTIR,1H-NMR,WAXD,TGA,DSC,the solubility and mechanical properties of the polymers were investigated.Results show that the glass transition of the polymers is in the range of 175℃ to 237℃.The structure of the polymers is amorphous as expected.The esterified polymers have better solubility than the corresponding polymer.Flexible and colorless films were easily obtained by solution casting taking DMAc as solvent.It shows that the polymers have good mechanical properties.Tensile strength,elongation at break and Young's module of polymers are in the range of 74.7 MPa to 85.4 MPa,6.34% to 15.43%,and 1.74 GPa to 3.08 GPa,respectively.

Abstract:Polyphosphate esters were synthesized from phenolphthalein and aryl phosphorodichloridates by interfacial polycondensation using a phase transfer catalyst. The polymers were characterized by IR, 1H‐, 13C‐, and 31P‐NMR spectroscopy. The molecular weights were calculated by end group analysis using 31P‐NMR spectral data. The thermal stability of the polymers was studied by thermogravimetry and the flammability was investigated by measuring limiting oxygen index values.

Abstract:A new family of positively charged and water soluble amino acid-based poly(ester amide)s (PEAs) consisting of nontoxic L-arginine, diols, and aliphatic dicarboxylic acids building blocks was synthesized and characterized. The L-arginine based PEAs (Arg-PEAs) were prepared by a solution polycondensation of two monomers: tetra-p-toluenesulfonic acids salts or hydrochloride acid salts of bis-(L-arginine) alpha, omega-alkylene diesters (monomer II), and di-p-nitrophenyl esters of saturated or unsaturated dicarboxylic acids (monomer I). Optimal reaction conditions were studied as functions of type of solvents and acid acceptors, concentrations of reactants. The molecular weights (Mn and Mw) of Arg-PEAs measured by GPC ranged from 20,000 to 60,000 g mol-1 with a rather narrow molecular weight distribution below 1.5. The chemical structures were confirmed by IR and NMR spectra. Arg-PEAs obtained were all amorphous materials with Tg from 33 to 125 degrees C, depending on the number and the type (saturated vs. unsaturated) of methylene groups in diols or diacids, and the type of counter-ions attached to the guanidine group of the Arg-based PEAs. The Arg-PEAs had a high solubility in all polar solvents, including water. Preliminary studies of cell morphology and DNA capture capability of Arg-PEAs indicated that this new family of cationic PEAs was nontoxic and more biocompatible than a commercial transfection agent (Superfect (R)), and can successfully capture plasma DNA. The strong positive charge of Arg-PEAs as well as their good water solubility could provide unique characteristics for potential gene transfection or other charge preferred biomedical applications. Abstract:A novel poly(aryl ether ketone) containing phthalazinone moiety (PPEKEKK)copolmper is synthesized by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) (2H)phthalazire-1-one with bis-1, 4-(4-chlorobenzoyl) benzene and 4, 4'-difluorobenzophenone. Thecopolymer is studied by FT-IR, DSC, TGA, X-ray diffraction. It is proved that PPEKEKK is aamorphous plastics with high glass transition temperature and good thermal stability, and theglass transition temperature of PPEKEKK increases with the decreasing of mole ratios of BCBB toDFPK. PPEKEKK has good solubility, soluble in some aprotic dipolar solvents.

Abstract:Phosphorylation of poly(epichlorohydrin) (PECH) was successfully performed via reacting the P-H bond of 9,10-dihydro-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) with the pendent chloromethyl groups of PECH. From this reaction, phosphorus-containing PECH with hydroxyl terminal groups was obtained. This compound was further reacted with toluene-2,4-diisocyanate to form a phosphorous-containing polyurethane. The performance of the phosphorylation reaction and the structure of the resulting polymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, phosphorous-31 nuclear magnetic resonance (P-31 NMR) spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The phosphorylated PECH and polyurethane were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which showed weight loss retardation behavior under air at high temperature at >500 degreesC and high char yield at 700 degreesC. Both of the synthesized polymers are potentially useful as multifunctional modifiers for epoxy resins and for improving the toughness and flame retardancy of the resins. Abstract:Polyesteramide (PEA(n, x/y))prepolymers with M-n from 4400 to 6400 were synthesized through melt polycondensation from whim, butanediol and N,N'-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)oxalamide (0) or N, N'-bis (2-hydroxyethyl) adipamide (4) at different butanediol (x) to bisamidediol (y) molar ratios. Chain extension reaction was performed with 2,2'-(1,4-phenylene)-bis(2-oxazoline) (PBOX) and adipoyl biscaprolactamate (ABC) as combined chain extenders. High molecular weight PEA (n, x/y) with M-n up to 22500 and M-n up to 53100 was prepared. The PEA(n, x/y) prepolymers and the chain extended PEA (n,x/y) were characterized by FTIR and H-1-NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calonmetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). H-1-NMR spectra revealed that during the preparation of the PEA (n,x/y) prepolymers, some esteramide exchange side reaction took place. DSC studies indicated that after chain extension the T-m and Delta H-m of the polyesteramides decreased. TGA studies showed that after the chain extension, the thermal stability of the PEA (n,x/y)s slightly decreased, but still a little higher than that of poly(butylene adipate).

Abstract:Aryl, heteroaryl, and benzylic electrophiles can be coupled to in situ-generated alkylphosphinates (ROP(O)H-2) in moderate to good yields using palladium catalysis. For the first time, electrophiles other than simple aryl iodides can be employed in an experimentally straightforward, one-pot reaction. The direct formation of H-phosphinic esters avoids the separate esterification of H-phosphinic (phosphonous) acids and is particularly useful in the case of nitrogen-containing heteroaromatics. Synthesis of Polymerizable Methyl Acryloyl Oxygen Propyl Phosphate Ester

Abstract:A phosphate ester reactive emulsifier is synthesized via multi steps reaction which uses phosphorus oxychloride, hydroxypropyl acrylate(HPA), and triethylamine as reactants. The optimum technical conditions are acquired by discussing different feed ratios, reaction time and temperature. The product is characterized by IR spectroscopy. The results indicate that the yield of methyl acryloyl oxygen propyl phosphate ester will reach 98.80% when the feed ratio is: n(POCl3)∶n(triethylamine) : n(HPA) = 1.1∶1.3∶1, the reaction time is 1.5h, the reaction temperature is 25℃, and the second step hydrolysis reaction temperature is 0 to 15℃, and the hydrolyzed material ratio is n(intermediate product)∶n(triethylamine)∶n(water) = 1∶1. 4∶1. 2.

Abstract:A series of novel poly(aryl ether ketone) s containing pendant aryl ester groups(PEK-COO-Ar) were prepared from poly(aryl ether ketone)s containing pendant carboxyl acid groups(PEK-A) and phenol in the presence of 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and by using p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst.The PEK-A was synthesized from trimellitic anhydride chloride(TMAc),terephthaloyl chloride(TPC) and 1,4-bis(4-phenoxybenzoyl)benzene(p-EKKE) by low temperature solution poly-condensation.By changing the molar ratio of TMAc and TPC a series of PEK-A polymers were prepared.The PEK-COO-Ars were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),wide-angle X-ray diffraction(WAXD),thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC).The results showed that the glass transition temperature(Tg) of the PEK-COO-Ar was in the range of 195 ～ 219℃ and the decomposition temperature(Td) at 5% weight loss was from 416℃ to 447℃ and the melting temperature(Tm) was between 325℃ and 345℃.The Tg of the PEK-COO-Ar increased by increasing the mole ratio of aryl ester groups in the polymer,while the Td deceased.The polymers were readily soluble in N-methly-2-pyrrodine,chloroacetic acid and concentrated sulfuric acid at room temperature.They were swelling or soluble in the strong polar aprotic solvent such as N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF),N,N-dimethylacetamide(DMAc) and dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) by heating.The polymers converted to amorphous when the molar ratio of TPC to TMAc was less than 1.The polymers had good mechanical properties after being isothermally crystallization.The tensile strength,elongation at break and elastic modulus of S2’(TPC/TMAc = 60/40) and S3’(TPC/TMAc = 50/50) were 112.1 MPa,27%,2.9 GPa and 130.3 MPa,24.2%,2.4 GPa,respectively.
Poly(Ether Tert-Amine): A Novel Family of Multiresponsive Polymer

Abstract:A novel multiresponsive poly(ether tert-amine) (PEA) was synthesized by nucleophilic addition/ring-opening reaction of commercial poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(propylene oxide) (PPO), and di-epoxy and di-amine monomer. The process of synthesis was very simple and green in ethanol as reactive media. These PEAS exhibit sharp response to temperature, pH, and ionic strength, with adjustable and sharp phase transitions in the range of 27-100 degrees C. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of PENS aqueous solution presents a linear relationship to the PEO content (y = 35.7 + x), indicating well-tunable LCST. The concentration of PEA has no obvious effect on LCST. Therefore, PEA will be potential in applications of drug delivery, separation, and biotechnology. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:This work presents a facile approach for preparation of acid-labile and biocompatible polymers with pendent cyclic ortho esters, which is based on the efficient and mild reactions between cyclic ketene acetal (CKA) and hydroxyl groups. Three CKAs, 2-ethylidene-1,3-dioxane (EDO), 2-ethylidene-1,3-dioxolane (EDL), and 2-ethylidene-4- methyl-1,3-dioxolane (EMD) were prepared from the corresponding cyclic vinyl acetals by catalytic isomerization of the double bond. The reaction of CKAs with different alcohols and diols was examined using trace of p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst. For the monohydroxyl alcohols, cyclic ortho esters were formed by simple addition of the hydroxyl group toward CKAs with ethanol showing a much greater reactivity than iso-propanol. When 1,2- or 1,3-diols were used to react with the CKAs, we observed the isomerized cyclic ortho esters besides the simple addition products. Biocompatible polyols, that is, poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were then modified with CKAs, and the degree of substitution of the pendent ortho esters can be easily tuned by changing feed ratio. Both the small molecule ortho esters and the CKA-modified polymers demonstrate the pH-dependent hydrolysis profiles, which depend also on the chemical structure of the ortho esters as well as the polymer hydrophobicity.
