Abstract:We investigate the quantum phase transitions of the transverse-field quantum Ising model on the triangular lattice and Sierpiński fractal lattices by employing the multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence along with the quantum renormalization group method. It is shown that the quantum criticalities of these high-dimensional models closely relate to the behaviors of the multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence. As the thermodynamic limit is approached, the first derivatives of the multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence exhibit singular behaviors, and the consistent finite-size scaling behaviors for each lattice are also obtained from the first derivatives. The multipartite entanglement and quantum coherence are demonstrated to be good indicators for detecting the quantum phase transitions in the triangular lattice and Sierpiński fractal lattices. Furthermore, the dimensions determine the relations between the critical exponents and the correlation length exponents for these lattices.

Abstract:Electronic states play a crucial role in many quantum systems of moir & eacute; superlattices, quasicrystals, and fractals. As recently reported for Sierpi & nacute;ski lattices [Yao et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 115424 (2023)], the critical states are revealed by the energy-level-correlation spectra, which are caused by the interplay between aperiodicity and determined self-similarity characters. In the case of the Sierpi & nacute;ski carpet, our results further demonstrate that there is some degree of spatial overlap between these electronic states. These states could be strongly affected by the "seed lattice" of the generator and slightly modulated by the dilation pattern and the geometrical self-similarity level. These electronic states are made multifractal by scaling the qth-order inverse participation ratio or fractal dimension, which correlates with the subdiffusion behavior. In the gene pattern, an average state-based multifractal dimension of second order would increase as its Hausdorff dimension increases. Our findings could potentially contribute to understanding quantum transports and single-particle quantum dynamics in fractals.
Fractal Quantum Phase Transitions: Critical Phenomena Beyond Renormalization

Abstract:We identify a quantum critical point with fractal symmetry whose effective theory eludes the renormalization group framework. We consider the Newman-Moore model with three-body interaction subjected to an external transverse field, which exhibits a Kramers-Wannier type self-duality and a fractal $Z_2$ symmetry with Ising charge conserved on a fractal subset of sites, i.e., on Sierpinski gaskets. Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we identify a continuous quantum phase transition between a phase with spontaneous fractal symmetry breaking and a paramagnetic phase. This phase transition is characterized by the emergence of a fractal scaling dimension $d=\ln(3)/\ln(2)$ at the quantum critical point, where the power-law exponent of the correlation function is related to the fractal dimension of the Sierpinski triangle. We develop a field theory to elucidate such quantum criticality and denote the fractal scaling as a subsequence of UV-IR mixing, where the low energy modes at the critical point are manipulated by short-wavelength physics due to the fractal symmetry.

Abstract:Through a combination of rigorous analytical derivations and extensive numerical simulations, this work reports an exotic multifractal behavior, dubbed "logarithmic multifractality", in effectively infinite-dimensional systems undergoing the Anderson transition. In marked contrast to conventional multifractal critical properties observed at finite-dimensional Anderson transitions or scale-invariant second-order phase transitions, in the presence of logarithmic multifractality, eigenstate statistics, spatial correlations, and wave packet dynamics can all exhibit scaling laws which are algebraic in the logarithm of system size or time. Our findings offer crucial insights into strong finite-size effects and slow dynamics in complex systems undergoing the Anderson transition, such as the many-body localization transition.

Energy-level Statistics in Planar Fractal Tight-Binding Models

Abstract:In this study, we examine the statistics of level spectra in a noninteracting electron gas confined to a Sierpinski carpet lattice. These lattices are constructed using two types of the self and gene patterns, and they are categorized by the area-perimeter scaling law. The singularly continuous spectra, along with the nearest level spacing distribution and gap-ratio distribution, reveal a critical phase different from both extended and localized phases. This critical phase differs from the behavior near the Anderson model's metal-insulator transition. The Wigner-like conjecture is confirmed for both lattice classes, indicating Gaussian orthogonal symmetry. A similar observation was made in a quasiperiodic lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 3996 (1998)]. The self-similar nature of fractals also leads to level clustering behavior.

Abstract:Electrons moving through a spatially periodic lattice potential develop a quantized energy spectrum consisting of discrete Bloch bands. In two dimensions, electrons moving through a magnetic field also develop a quantized energy spectrum, consisting of highly degenerate Landau energy levels. When subject to both a magnetic field and a periodic electrostatic potential, two-dimensional systems of electrons exhibit a self-similar recursive energy spectrum. Known as Hofstadter’s butterfly, this complex spectrum results from an interplay between the characteristic lengths associated with the two quantizing fields,,,,,,,,,, and is one of the first quantum fractals discovered in physics. Critical dynamics of long-range quantum disordered systems

Abstract:Long-range hoppings in quantum disordered systems are known to yield quantum multifractality, whose features can go beyond the characteristic properties associated with an Anderson transition. Indeed, critical dynamics of long-range quantum systems can exhibit anomalous dynamical behaviours distinct from those at the Anderson transition in finite dimensions. In this paper, we propose a phenomenological model of wave packet expansion in long-range hopping systems. We consider both their multifractal properties and the algebraic fat tails induced by the long-range hoppings. Using this model, we analytically derive the dynamics of moments and Inverse Participation Ratios of the time-evolving wave packets, in connection with the multifractal dimension of the system. To validate our predictions, we perform numerical simulations of a Floquet model that is analogous to the power law random banded matrix ensemble. Unlike the Anderson transition in finite dimensions, the dynamics of such systems cannot be adequately described by a single parameter scaling law that solely depends on time. Instead, it becomes crucial to establish scaling laws involving both the finite-size and the time. Explicit scaling laws for the observables under consideration are presented. Our findings are of considerable interest towards applications in the fields of many-body localization and Anderson localization on random graphs, where long-range effects arise due to the inherent topology of the Hilbert space.

Abstract:We study the multifractal behavior of coherent states projected in the energy eigenbasis of the spin-boson Dicke Hamiltonian, a paradigmatic model describing the collective interaction between a single bosonic mode and a set of two-level systems. By examining the linear approximation and parabolic correction to the mass exponents, we find ergodic and multifractal coherent states and show that they reflect details of the structure of the classical phase space, including chaos, regularity, and features of localization. The analysis of multifractality stands as a sensitive tool to detect changes and structures in phase space, complementary to classical tools to investigate it. Quantum phase with coexisting localized, extended, and critical zones

Abstract:Conventionally a mobility edge (ME) marks a critical energy that separates two different transport zones where all states are extended and localized, respectively. Here we propose a novel quasiperiodic spin-orbit coupled lattice model with experimental feasibility to realize a fundamentally new quantum phase with three coexisting energy-dependent zones, i.e., the extended, critical and localized zones, and uncover the underlying generic mechanism for the occurrence of the new quantum phase. Accordingly, this phase exhibits new types of MEs which separate the extended states from critical ones, and the localized states from critical ones, respectively. We introduce the diagnostic quantities to characterize and distinguish the different zones, and show that the predicted phase can be detected by measuring the fractal dimension or conductivities. The experimental realization is also proposed and studied. This work extends the concept of ME and enriches the quantum phases in disordered systems, which sheds light on searching for new localization and critical phenomena with novel transport and thermoelectric effects.

Abstract:Fractals are fascinating, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for allowing the investigation of physical properties in non-integer dimensions. In these unconventional systems, many intrinsic features might come into play, including the fractal dimension and the fractal geometry. Despite abundant theoretical studies, experiments in fractal networks remain elusive. Here we experimentally investigate quantum transport in fractal networks by performing continuous-time quantum walks in fractal photonic lattices. We unveil the transport properties through the photon evolution patterns, the mean square displacement and the Pólya number. Contrarily to classical fractals, we observe anomalous transport governed solely by the fractal dimension. In addition, the critical point at which there is a transition from normal to anomalous transport depends on the fractal geometry. Our experiment allows the verification of physical laws in a quantitative manner and reveals the transport dynamics in great detail, thus opening a path to the understanding of more complex quantum phenomena governed by fractality. Quantum transport in fractal networks is experimentally investigated by performing continuous-time quantum walks in fractal photonic lattices. Contrarily to classical fractals, anomalous transport governed solely by the fractal dimension is observed.

Higher-order topological phases on fractal lattices

Abstract:Electronic materials harbor a plethora of exotic quantum phases, ranging from unconventional superconductors to non-Fermi liquids and, more recently, topological phases of matter. While these quantum phases in integer dimensions are well characterized by now, their presence in fractional dimensions remains vastly unexplored. Here, we theoretically show that a special class of crystalline phases, namely, higher-order topological phases that via an extended bulk-boundary correspondence feature robust gapless modes on lower-dimensional boundaries, such as corners and hinges, can be found on a representative family of fractional materials: quantum fractals . To anchor this general proposal, we demonstrate realizations of second-order topological insulators and superconductors, supporting charged and neutral Majorana corner modes on planar Sierpiński carpet and triangle fractals, respectively. Abstract:Localization-delocalization transition in disordered quantum small-world network model is confirmed by using the numerical multifractal analysis of the wave functions at the critical point. A linear relation between the numerator acid the denominator of the parametric representation for the singularity spectrum of the wave functions near the transition point is obtained, serving as a criterion of the critical behavior. The singularity spectrum f(alpha) at the critical point is size independent. The variation of the fractal intensity alpha (q) at q = 0 and q = 1 in changing the rewiring probability p reveals the phase transition as shown in the level statistics on the same model.
Dynamical Spectral Response of Fractonic Quantum Matter

Abstract:Quantum many-body systems with fractonic excitations can realize fascinating phases of matter. Here, we study the low-energy excitations of a constrained Bose-Hubbard model in one dimension, which conserves the center of mass or, equivalently, the dipole moment in addition to the particle number. This model is known to realize fractonic phases, including a dipole Mott insulator, a dipole Luttinger liquid, and a metastable dipole supersolid. We use tensor network methods to compute spectral functions from the dynamical response of the system and verify predictions from low-energy field theories of the corresponding ground state phases. We demonstrate the existence of gapped excitations compatible with strong coupling results in a dipole Mott insulator, linear sound modes characteristic of a Luttinger liquid of dipoles, and soft quadratic modes at both zero and finite momenta in a supersolid state with charge density wave order and phase coherence at non-integer filling.

Abstract:Inspired by the similarity between the fractal Weierstrass function and quantum systems with discrete scaling symmetry, we establish general conditions under which the dynamics of a quantum system will exhibit fractal structure in the time domain. As an example, we discuss the dynamics of the Loschmidt amplitude and the zero-momentum occupation of a single particle moving in a scale invariant 1/r^{2} potential. In order to show these conditions can be realized in ultracold atomic gases, we perform numerical simulations with practical experimental parameters, which shows that the dynamical fractal can be observed in realistic timescales. The predication can be directly verified in current cold atom experiments.

Abstract:Fractal materials are fascinating substances that introduce a novel, non-integer dimension world and display self-similar properties. This unique characteristic holds significant appeal in both scientific and mathematical realms. In recent times, there has been noteworthy progress in the synthesis of fractal materials and their promising applications attributed to the distinct properties associated with their special fractal structures. Notably, these properties include a high specific surface area, an abundance of high-density edges and sharp points, all of which provide fractal materials with exceptional advantages in diverse applications, such as biomolecular detection, optics, and energy-related fields. This article centers on exploring the structural characteristics, widely accepted formation mechanisms, and notable applications of fractal materials. Additionally, we explore the current challenges concerning synthetic strategies and future development prospects. We propose rational and strategic perspectives that may serve as potential guidelines for advancing fractal materials. By offering a timely and comprehensive review, this article aims to foster the development of nanostructures.

Quantum description of atomic diffraction by material nanostructures

Abstract:We present a theoretical model of matter-wave diffraction through a material nanostructure. This model is based on the numerical solution of the time-dependent Schr{ö}dinger equation, which goes beyond the standard semi-classical approach. In particular, we consider the dispersion force interaction between the atoms and the material, which is responsible for high energy variations. The effect of such forces on the quantum model is investigated, along with a comparison with the semi-classical model. In particular, for atoms at low velocity and close to the material surface, the semi-classical approach fails, while the quantum model accurately describes the expected diffraction pattern. This description is thus relevant for slow and cold atom experiments where increased precision is required, e.g. for metrological applications.

Exploring Multifractal Critical Phases in Two-Dimensional Quasiperiodic Systems

Abstract:The multifractal critical phase (MCP) fundamentally differs from extended and localized phases, exhibiting delocalized distributions in both position and momentum spaces. The investigation on the MCP has largely focused on one-dimensional quasiperiodic systems. Here, we introduce a two-dimensional (2D) quasiperiodic model with a MCP. We present its phase diagram and investigate the characteristics of the 2D system's MCP in terms of wave packet diffusion and transport based on this model. We further investigate the movement of the phase boundary induced by the introduction of next-nearest-neighbor hopping by calculating the fidelity susceptibility. Finally, we consider how to realize our studied model in superconducting circuits. Our work opens the door to exploring MCP in 2D systems.
