Abstract:The preparation of CuCrZr alloy parts by traditional material processing methods usually requires solution and aging treatment to precipitate Cr phase to improve the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the alloy. Electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF) additive manufacturing always keeps the substrate at high temperature when forming parts. This special thermal history process is similar to aging treatment. Therefore, the CuCrZr alloy prepared by EB-PBF is expected to precipitate Cr phase in situ, avoiding time-consuming and expensive aging treatment. In this study, CuCrZr alloys with nano-Cr phases were successfully generated in situ by EB-PBF. Firstly, the theoretical model for thermal calculation is corrected and obtained the linear energy density (LED) range (253–526 J/m) required for the preparation of high density CuCrZr by EB-PBF. Experiments verified the accuracy of the theoretical model and established a reference for EB-PBF process development of new materials. Furthermore, the effects of LED on the microstructure evolution, microstructure, nano-precipitation, electrical conductivity, and mechanical properties of CuCrZr alloy specimens were systematically studied. The results show that the average grain size of CuCrZr is positively correlated with the LED value, mainly distributed in the range of 14.7–24.2 μm. At the same time, it was found that two types of nano-Cr 2 O 3 precipitates (ie, spherical and rod-shaped) were uniformly distributed in the matrix, and the average particle size was positively correlated with the LED value. Finally, the specimens exhibited excellent comprehensive properties, among which the highest elongation, ultimate tensile strength and electrical conductivity were 32.1%, 257.7 MPa and 70.6 ± 1.4 %IACS, respectively.
