Abstract:The distribution of the sum of negative binomial random variables has a special role in insurance mathematics, actuarial sciences, and ecology. Two methods to estimate this distribution have been published: a finite-sum exact expression and a series expression by convolution. We compare both methods, as well as a new normalized saddlepoint approximation, and normal and single distribution negative binomial approximations. We show that the exact series expression used lots of memory when the number of random variables was high (>7). The normalized saddlepoint approximation gives an output with a high relative error (around 3–5%), which can be a problem in some situations. The convolution method is a good compromise for applied practitioners, considering the amount of memory used, the computing time, and the precision of the estimates. However, a simplistic implementation of the algorithm could produce incorrect results due to the non-monotony of the convergence rate. The tolerance limit must be chosen depending on the expected magnitude order of the estimate, for which we used the answer generated by the saddlepoint approximation. Finally, the normal and negative binomial approximations should not be used, as they produced outputs with a very low accuracy.

Abstract:Consider the observation of n iid realizations of an experiment with d>1 possible outcomes, which corresponds to a single observation of a multinomial distribution M(n,p) where p is an unknown discrete distribution on {1,...,d}. In many applications, the construction of a confidence region for p when n is small is crucial. This concrete challenging problem has a long history. It is well known that the confidence regions built from asymptotic statistics do not have good coverage when n is small. On the other hand, most available methods providing non-asymptotic regions with controlled coverage are limited to the binomial case d=2. In the present work, we propose a new method valid for any d>1. This method provides confidence regions with controlled coverage and small volume, and consists of the inversion of the "covering collection"' associated with level-sets of the likelihood. The behavior when d/n tends to infinity remains an interesting open problem beyond the scope of this work.

Abstract:In this paper we do some research on a three-parameter distribution which is called beta-negative binomial (BNB) distribution, a beta mixture of negative binomial (NB) distribution. The closed form and the factorial moment of the BNB distribution are derived. In addition, we present the recursion on the pdf of BNB stopped-sum distribution, and make stochastic comparison between BNB and NB distributions. Furthermore, we have shown that BNB distribution has heavier tail than NB distribution. The application of BNB distribution is carried out on one sample of insurance data. Based on the results, we have shown that the BNB provides a better fit compared to the Poisson and the NB for count data.

Abstract:In this article, we use bockwise empirical likelihood technique to construct confidence regions for the parameter of the single-index models under negatively associated errors. It is shown that the blockwise empirical likelihood ratio statistic for the parameter of interest is asymptotically chi(2)-type distributed. The result can be used to obtain confidence regions for the parameter of interest.
Growth Estimators and Confidence Intervals for the Mean of Negative Binomial Random Variables with Unknown Dispersion

Abstract:The negative binomial distribution becomes highly skewed under extreme dispersion. Even at moderately large sample sizes, the sample mean exhibits a heavy right tail. The standard normal approximation often does not provide adequate inferences about the data's expected value in this setting. In previous work, we have examined alternative methods of generating confidence intervals for the expected value. These methods were based upon Gamma and Chi Square approximations or tail probability bounds such as Bernstein's inequality. We now propose growth estimators of the negative binomial mean. Under high dispersion, zero values are likely to be overrepresented in the data. A growth estimator constructs a normal-style confidence interval by effectively removing a small, predetermined number of zeros from the data. We propose growth estimators based upon multiplicative adjustments of the sample mean and direct removal of zeros from the sample. These methods do not require estimating the nuisance dispersion parameter. We will demonstrate that the growth estimators' confidence intervals provide improved coverage over a wide range of parameter values and asymptotically converge to the sample mean. Interestingly, the proposed methods succeed despite adding both bias and variance to the normal approximation.

Abstract:The negative multinomial distribution appears in many areas of applications such as polarimetric image processing and the analysis of longitudinal count data. In previous studies, Mosimann (1963) derived general formulas for the falling factorial moments of the negative multinomial distribution, while Withers & Nadarajah (2014) obtained expressions for the cumulants. Despite the availability of the moment generating function, no comprehensive formulas for the moments have been calculated thus far. This paper addresses this gap by presenting general formulas for both central and non-central moments of the negative multinomial distribution. These formulas are expressed in terms of binomial coefficients and Stirling numbers of the second kind. Utilizing these formulas, we provide explicit expressions for all central moments up to the 4th order and all non-central moments up to the 8th order.

Two-Sample Inference in Highly Dispersed Negative Binomial Models

Methodology

Abstract:Two-sample inference for the difference of population means typically relies upon a Central Limit Theorem approximation. When data are drawn from a Negative Binomial distribution, previous work of Shilane et al. (2010) showed that a Normal approximation is often unreliable in one-sample inference and proposed alternative techniques. We seek to extend these methods to the problem of two-sample inference on the difference of sample means in highly dispersed Negative Binomial models. We demonstrate that the Normal approximation is considerably more robust in the two-sample setting and may often be applied even when it is not appropriate for either sample individually. We also provide an intuitive extension of Bernstein's Inequality to the two-sample case. A simple mixture of these two methods may improve coverage in borderline and small sample settings. We subsequently investigate the coverage quality of confidence intervals and sample size considerations in a wide variety of simulation studies. Overall, we demonstrate that the Normal approximation is considerably more robust in approximating the distribution of the mean difference than the corresponding one-sample theory would suggest.

Abstract:Estimation of the predictive probability function of a negative binomial distribution is addressed under the Kullback—Leibler risk. An identity that relates Bayesian predictive probability estimation to Bayesian point estimation is derived. Such identities are known in the cases of normal and Poisson distributions, and the paper extends the result to the negative binomial case. By using the derived identity, a dominance property of a Bayesian predictive probability is studied when the parameter space is restricted.

Because the binomial distribution is discrete, the analytical evaluation of the exact confidence interval of the sampled outcome is a mathematical challenge. This paper proposes three alternative confidence interval calculation methods that are characterized and exemplified.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a closed form approximation to the mean and variance of a new generalization of negative binomial (NGNB) distribution arising from the Extended COM-Poisson (ECOMP) distribution developed by Chakraborty and Imoto (2016)(see [4]). The NGNB is a special case of the ECOMP distribution and was named so by these authors. This distribution is more flexible in terms of the dispersion index as compared to its ordinary counterparts. It approaches the COM-Poisson distribution (Shmueli et al. 2005) [11] under suitable limiting conditions. The NGNB can also be obtained from the COM-Negative Hypergeometric distribution (Roy et al. 2019)[10] as a limiting distribution. In this paper, we present closed-form approximations for the mean and variance of the NGNB distribution. These approximations can be viewed as the mean and variance of convolution of independent and identically distributed negative binomial populations. The proposed closed-form approximations of the mean and variance will be helpful in building the link function for the generalized negative binomial regression model based on the NGNB distribution and other extended applications, hence resulting in enhanced applicability of this model.
Finite Sample Confidence Regions for Linear Regression Parameters Using Arbitrary Predictors

Abstract:We explore a novel methodology for constructing confidence regions for parameters of linear models, using predictions from any arbitrary predictor. Our framework requires minimal assumptions on the noise and can be extended to functions deviating from strict linearity up to some adjustable threshold, thereby accommodating a comprehensive and pragmatically relevant set of functions. The derived confidence regions can be cast as constraints within a Mixed Integer Linear Programming framework, enabling optimisation of linear objectives. This representation enables robust optimization and the extraction of confidence intervals for specific parameter coordinates. Unlike previous methods, the confidence region can be empty, which can be used for hypothesis testing. Finally, we validate the empirical applicability of our method on synthetic data.

Abstract:Let $B(n,p)$ denote a binomial random variable with parameters $n$ and $p$. Chvátal's theorem says that for any fixed $n\geq 2$, as $m$ ranges over $\{0,\ldots,n\}$, the probability $q_m:=P(B(n,m/n)\leq m)$ is the smallest when $m$ is closest to $\frac{2n}{3}$. Motivated by this theorem, in this note we consider the infimum value of the probability $P(X\leq E[X])$, where $X$ is a negative binomial random variable. As a consequence, we give an affirmative answer to the conjecture posed in [Statistics and Probability Letters, 200 (2023) 109871].

Abstract:In this paper, a new mixture distribution for count data, namely the negative binomial-new generalized Lindley (NB-NGL) distribution is proposed. The NB-NGL distribution has four parameters, and is a flexible alternative for analyzing count data, especially when there is over-dispersion in the data. The proposed distribution has sub-models such as the negative binomial-Lindley (NB-L), negative binomial-gamma (NB-G), and negative binomial-exponential (NB-E) distributions as the special cases. Some properties of the proposed distribution are derived, i.e., the moments and order statistics density function. The unknown parameters of the NB-NGL distribution are estimated by using the maximum likelihood estimation. The results of the simulation study show that the maximum likelihood estimators give the parameter estimates close to the parameter when the sample is large. Application of NB-NGL distribution is carry out on three samples of medical data, industry data, and insurance data. Based on the results, it is shown that the proposed distribution provides a better fit compared to the Poisson, negative binomial, and its sub-model for count data.

Abstract:A generalized negative binomial distribution is derived from the Markov Bernoulli sequence of successes and failures. We study the properties and applications of this distribution. The properties are illustrated by two examples of discrete time queueing systems. The distribution is then fitted to two data sets, the eruption record of Mt. Sangay, and a record of computer disk failure accesses. In the first case there is a strong serial dependence in the data and the generalized negative binomial provides a good fit, while in the second case, although there is a significant serial dependence, it is insufficient to justify the additional parameter of the distribution. We conclude by demonstrating the usefulness of the distribution in the field of statistical quality control.

Abstract:In this paper, a quasi-negative binomial distribution (QNBD) derived from the class of generalized Lagrangian probability distributions is studied. The negative binomial distribution is a special case of QNBD. Some properties of QNBD, including the upper tail behavior and limiting distributions, are investigated. It is shown that the moments do not exist in some situations and the limiting distribution of QNBD is the generalized Poisson distribution under certain conditions. A zero-inflated QNBD is also defined. Applications of QNBD and zero-inflated QNBD in various fields are presented and compared with some other existing distributions including Poisson, generalized Poisson and negative binomial distributions as well as their zero-inflated versions. In general, the QNBD or its zero-inflated version performs better than the other models based on the chi-square statistic and the Akaike Information Criterion, especially for the cases where the data are highly skewed, have heavy tails or excessive numbers of zeros.

In this paper, we explain how methods used for the central beta distribution function (described in [2]) can be used to obtain asymptotic representations of these functions, and also for their inversion. Abstract:In this paper, the positive negative binomial-Lindley distribution is used to model count data for which the value zero cannot occur, which means that the NB-L distribution has to be adjusted for the missing zeros. We introduce and investigate some characteristics of the proposed distributions, such as the mean and variance. For the simulation, the parameters of the proposed distributions are estimated based on the maximum likelihood estimation method. We consider the efficiency of this parameter estimation method based on the mean squared error. It is applied in two applications; the positive NB-L distribution provides a better fit than the zero-truncated Poisson and the zero-truncated Poisson–Lindley distributions.

Abstract:The negative binomial distribution is frequently used as an alternative to the Poisson distribution for count data. One interpretation of the negative binomial distribution is that it is a compound Poisson distribution with means chosen at random from a gamma distribution. This appears to be a useful model for failure data, particularly for data from a number of repairable systems all of which follow a Poisson process but with different intensities. In this framework the times to failure are of importance and the distributions of these are derived for both a single system and a collection of systems. The distributions are shown to be related to Snedecor's F distribution. The usefulness of these concepts is exemplified through evaluations of reliability and spare parts requirements based on some airplane component data. Method of moments estimation of the parameters and confidence interval estimation of the average failure intensity are also mentioned.
