Abstract:The number of urban vitality assessment studies is rising continuously, owing to the emergence of geographic data. The current literature focuses primarily on evaluation, rather than implementation, of urban vitality. Hence, a scoping review and research agenda are needed for urban vitality research to be more practical. This study aims to fill the research gap by exploring the content and methods of vitality assessment that can make urban vitality research more compatible with policy, planning, and design practice. We chose the neighborhood scale, which is the most practical initiative unit for vitality enhancement. We discovered that the gaps between the current research and practice primarily lie in the diversity of research subjects, the authenticity and comprehensiveness of vitality measurement, and the multi-domain of impact factor analysis. On this basis, we classified the following expandable aspects: (1) multi-type, multi-dimensional, multi-temporal, and implementation-adaptive vitality evaluation; (2) methods reflecting high-quality social interactions and the perceptions of vulnerable groups; (3) how design and urban management impacts vitality; and (4) the synergistic effects of multiple indicators on vitality. Overall, the research content and methodology presented in this paper can help neighborhood-scale vitality assessment to provide more meaningful insights for policy makers and practitioners.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to highlight the main policies of the last half century that have shaped the urban architectural fabric of Seoul today, and explore whether a modified approach might better address the current socioeconomic conditions in Korea. The paper defines and examines urban planning in Korea through an overview of the four main urban project policies implemented in Seoul from the 1960s to the present: Land Readjustment (LR), Housing Site Development (HSD), Urban Redevelopment (UR), and Housing Reconstruction (HR). While the fundamental ideology behind these policies served well during a prolonged period of high economic growth, evidence is growing that these policies are losing steam under today's conditions. A growing legacy of stalled and incomplete urban projects from the mid-2000s-the New Town Project is an example-begs the fundamental question as to whether an alternative urban planning paradigm is needed for Korea in an age of low economic growth, low birth rates and a fossil fuel energy crisis. Through the urban morphologies of the three residential areas in Seoul developed by LR projects, this paper looks at the possibility of urban regeneration through the sustainment of urban architecture in those residential areas that have not been affected by HSD, UR, and HR.

Evaluating the effect of compact urban form on air quality in Korea

Abstract:Air quality is affected by the interplay between emission sources and urban planning factors such as land use, built environment, development pattern, and transportation. Few empirical studies have been conducted to determine the influence of urban form characteristics on air quality in Korea. Thus, the purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between urban form and air pollution, focusing on ozone pollution in Korea. The characteristics of urban form include density, concentration, clustering, and land use mix. In this study, those characteristics were measured by population density, the Theil index, Moran’s I index, G-statistic values, and an entropy index using statistical methods and a geographic information system. We employed a spatial regression model to consider the spatial effects of ozone concentrations. We found that the degree of urban land use mix, clustering, and concentration of development are significantly associated with better air quality by using a spatial lag model, which was found to be the best fit for the data used in this study. However, an increase in population density was found to be associated with exacerbated ozone concentrations. Communities with higher daily temperatures, a large number of cars, and polluting facilities exhibited poor air quality, while those with a larger percentage of residential land use tended to have lower ozone pollution. These findings suggest that, to properly address concerns over air quality, mixed-land use and compact urban form need to be more seriously considered in sustainable urban planning.
Identifying urban form typologies in Seoul using a new Gaussian mixture model-based clustering framework

Abstract:Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science, Ahead of Print. Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, has diverse urban forms developed through its complex history. Previous studies show limitations of strong subjectivity and difficulty in scalability in identifying typical Seoul urban forms with expert knowledge. Data-driven approach offers an opportunity to address those challenges, but previous studies often focused on direct applications of clustering algorithms to a given area with diverse methods and workflows, lacking a systematic framework. This study addressed these issues by developing a new form clustering framework to systematically identify form typologies at a large scale and demonstrated its application in Seoul. With a 500 m × 500 m grid as the basic spatial unit and twelve urban form attributes as learning features, 14 clusters were identified using the Gaussian mixture model. These clusters were further translated into form typologies following a semantic typology naming system, with representative form samples identified. The resulting typologies were then verified and validated through comparisons with previous studies. Their relationships with zoning classes were also examined, emphasizing their role in urban planning and design. Results suggest this new framework is an effective and promising way to identify urban form typologies in complex urban environments to better support urban planning and management.

Abstract:The United Nations has proposed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), of which SDG11 aims to "make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable". This is in line with Urban Vitality's objectives. This study proposes a quantitative framework to evaluate the impact of urban morphology on urban vitality. In this framework, a proxy that is more reflective of economic and human activities is proposed for depicting urban vitality based on geographic big data; then we use a Multi-scale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) regression considering spatial heterogeneity to analyze the different effects of urban form on urban vitality. Taking the Beijing Sixth Ring Road area as the study region, the results indicate that tall, large-area, multi-functional buildings have a significantly positive impact on urban vitality. These areas exhibit single-function buildings and high levels of greenery, leading to inefficient space utilization. Increasing road network density, as well as the density of transportation and public facilities, also positively influences urban vitality. However, commercial density has a negative impact on workday vitality. Furthermore, excessive green space density, a high proportion of the largest green patches, and complex green space borders all contribute to a reduction in urban vitality.

Abstract:The rapid development of cities has caused various environmental problems. Recently, in Korea, citizens' interest and concerns regarding particulate matter are on the rise. Particulate matter has an adverse impact on the health and activities of individuals, and this can lead to a decline in urban vitality. The maintenance and management of urban vitality is essential for ensuring a sustainable and livable city; consequently, an understanding of environmental impact is indispensable. Thus, this study aims to demonstrate the impact of particulate matter on urban vitality by using the spatiotemporal big data of particulate matter and floating population that targets Seoul—a world-class high-density city in South Korea. Further, it aims to examine the impact of the spatial and physical characteristics of neighborhoods on the vitality of cities and neighborhoods. The data analyzed the impact of particulate matter on neighborhood vitality by using a spatial panel model that considered the characteristics of time series and local data. The analysis demonstrated that the impact of particulate matter varied during weekdays and weekends. It did not significantly affect the numerous mandatory activities of city dwellers and vitality on weekdays. However, on weekends, when there are relatively more selective activities, particulate matter was found to affect the decline of urban vitality. This means that people are very anxious about particulate matter, and that it leads them to reduce their visits whenever possible on weekends, when selective activities are predominant. In the spatial characteristics of the neighborhood, the degree of development, land use for commercial and business purposes, land-use mix, access to public transportation, and pedestrian environment were found to significantly impact the increase of urban vitality. However, areas with significant land use for residential and industrial purposes, and areas with high altitudes were found to have relatively low urban vitality. Parks and living infrastructure had different effects on urban vitality depending on the type. This study's results can be utilized to establish various policies related to particulate matter and devise measures to enhance urban vitality.

Abstract:Unprecedented urbanisation processes characterise the Great Acceleration, urging urban researchers to make sense of data analysis in support of evidence-based and large-scale decision-making. Urban morphologists are no exception since the impact of urban form on fundamental natural and social patterns (equity, prosperity and resource consumption’s efficiency) is now fully acknowledged. However, urban morphology is still far from offering a comprehensive and reliable framework for quantitative analysis. Despite remarkable progress since its emergence in the late 1950s, the discipline still exhibits significant terminological inconsistencies with regards to the definition of the fundamental components of urban form, which prevents the establishment of objective models for measuring it. In this article, we present a study of existing methods for measuring urban form, with a focus on terminological inconsistencies, and propose a systematic and comprehensive framework to classify urban form characters, where ‘urban form character’ stands for a characteristic (or feature) of one kind of urban form that distinguishes it from another kind. In particular, we introduce the Index of Elements that allows for a univocal and non-interpretive description of urban form characters. Based on such Index of Elements, we develop a systematic classification of urban form according to six categories (dimension, shape, spatial distribution, intensity, connectivity and diversity) and three conceptual scales (small, medium, large) based on two definitions of scale (extent and grain). This framework is then applied to identify and organise the urban form characters adopted in available literature to date. The resulting classification of urban form characters reveals clear gaps in existing research, in particular, in relation to the spatial distribution and diversity characters. The proposed framework reduces the current inconsistencies of urban morphology research, paving the way to enhanced methods of urban form systematic and quantitative analysis at a global scale.

Abstract:Substantial efforts have been devoted to investigating the effects of urban form on fundamental natural and social patterns. Such efforts, however, focus mostly on the urban and regional scales. Despite fine-scale investigations that have been conducted recently to analyze how the urban landscape influences urban vitality at the local scale, these studies are often based on the two-dimensional shape of spaces and ignore the diversification of economies and activities in various cities throughout the day. This work examined the relationships between multidimensional urban form and urban vitality at the street block level and explored their variations across fifteen megacities in China. Based on the framework of Conzen’s town-plan analysis, multidimensional urban form was quantified from three fundamental aspects: city plan, building forms, and land utilization. The local vitality was measured in social and economic dimensions at different times of day using restaurant data and nighttime lights. Our results revealed the time- and place-varying relationships between urban form and urban vitality and indicated the successes and failures of widely accepted norms of a good city form. In particular, connectivity, compactness, building arrangement, iconic buildings, transport facilities, and open and green spaces were found to be important for urban vitality, whereas land-use mixture and building density presented limited or unintended effects. Furthermore, some urban form indicators could contrarily contribute to vitality for different cities, times, or dimensions, suggesting that urban spaces bearing these qualifications might not be constantly attractive. We suggest a consideration of local spatiotemporal characteristics in urban revitalization policies.

Abstract:Environment and Planning B: Urban Analytics and City Science, Ahead of Print. Urban space vitality is a critical indicator for supporting rational urban spatial planning and updating and formulating sustainable development strategies. However, in many areas (e.g., aging urban areas), there is often a mismatch between the conditions of the physical built environment and its spatial attractiveness. Traditional methods based on physical space design theory often fail to accurately measure the spatial vitality of these areas. Street view images directly reflect the actual construction situation and effectively compensate for the lack of visual, subjective, perception dimension information. This study proposes a novel method that integrates objective and subjective dimensions to measure urban vitality, which is captured by incorporating spatial data of points of interest, building outlines, road networks, and street view images. Then, taking mobile phone signaling data as a source of ground truth validation, we choose Nanjing as a case study to demonstrate that our multidimensional fusion method exhibits higher explanatory power and better alignment with actual conditions by comparing it against single-dimensional methods. The results underscore the importance of integrating subjective and perceptual dimensions in measurements of urban vitality. We believe that the localized samples of the subjective perception survey will further enhance the accuracy and generalizability of this method in the future.

Abstract:Neighborhood social vulnerability is a dimension of vulnerability that influences society's response to external factors, encompassing various social factors tied to socioeconomic and demographic attributes at the neighborhood level. While previous studies have explored the associations between vulnerable neighborhoods and stressors like environmental hazards, understanding of their impact on residents' social capital remains limited. Moreover, the role of built environments in mitigating these effects is uncertain. This study investigates the impact of neighborhood social vulnerability, alongside streetscape features, on individual social capital in Seoul, South Korea. Using a stratified random sampling method, we surveyed 1000 Seoul residents, assessing their social capital and demographics. In particular, six questionnaires based on a four-point Likert scale were used to measure the individual level of social capital: two questions for social networks, three questions for social participation, and one question for sense of community. Additionally, we employed a deep learning-based model to analyze Google Street View images for detailed streetscape features. Our analysis, utilizing multiple and ordinal logistic regression models, reveals that walkable environments and neighborhood prosperity, indicated by factors like income, education, and street greenery, are linked to higher social capital. Moreover, less urbanized areas with lower land prices and greater openness to the sky also show positive associations. These findings underscore the potential of improving streetscape features to mitigate the negative impacts of neighborhood vulnerability, particularly in neighborhoods where low-income and less-educated residents are concentrated, offering insights for urban planners and community leaders.

Exploring the Correlation between Urban Microclimate Simulation and Urban Morphology: A Case Study in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul

Abstract:Different social backgrounds and planning policies give rise to diverse urban morphologies. These morphologies influence urban microclimate factors and contribute to the formation of unique local microclimates, particularly in terms of outdoor temperature. In recent times, the heat island effect has gained increasing significance during the summer season. Therefore, this study aims to explore the correlation between urban microclimate simulation and urban morphology within the context of the heat island effect. Specifically, we investigate how the outside temperature varies across different types of residential buildings in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, South Korea, during the summer period. We compare temperature conditions using a multi-dimensional system of building clusters' morphological indices and employ ENVI-met software for simulation purposes. The results of the urban microclimate simulation are comprehensively analyzed, revealing a significant finding: high-rise residential buildings exhibit considerably higher outdoor temperatures compared to low-rise residential buildings. Furthermore, the presence of open spaces plays a crucial role in mitigating high neighborhood temperatures. By deriving insights from these findings, we aim to provide valuable conclusions to support city managers in making informed decisions.

The Transition from Traditional Infrastructure to Living SOC and Its Effectiveness for Community Sustainability: The Case of South Korea

Abstract:In 2018, the South Korean government began promoting a “livelihood-improving” social overhead capital policy based on the concepts of an inclusive city, smart shrinkage, and the balanced development of metropolitan and provincial cities. Based on a review of the extant literature and relevant policies from South Korea, this study explores this policy’s implementation and makes some suggestions for its sustainability. This study compares the current state of South Korea’s urban facilities’ and the balance of their supply between metropolitan and provincial cities. To discern which type of facility central and local governments should prioritize, this study conducts a stepwise regression analysis and identifies which preexisting facilities influence the facility type proposed by the current policy. Results show that South Korea’s living infrastructure is well distributed among metropolitan and provincial cities. However, urban planning shows little consideration for minimizing the distance between facilities and residential zones. In terms of facility types, the supply of education and local community facilities was adequate throughout the country, while culture and art facilities were inadequate. In metropolitan cities, the supply of sports and leisure facilities was insufficient.

Abstract:In the context of rapid urbanization in developing countries, the spatial organization of cities has been progressively restructured over the past decades. However, little has been done to understand how the physical expansion affected the reorganization of socioeconomic spaces in cities. This study explores the association between various street network metrics and urban vitality and how it changes across different scales using geographic big data through a case study of Wuhan, China. Urban vitality is characterized by four components: concentration, accessibility, livability, and diversity. The new technique of spatial design network analysis (sDNA) is employed to characterize street network metrics, including connectivity, closeness, betweenness, severance, and efficiency, with 16 localized network variables. Furthermore, the stratified spatial heterogeneity between street network metrics at multiple scales and the four components of urban vitality is investigated using the Geodetector tool. First, concentration, accessibility, and diversity decline with distance from the urban center, whereas livability has a fluctuating upward trend with distance from the urban core. Second, the correlation between street network characteristics and urban vitality is sensitive to different spatial scales. Third, connectivity explains the largest amount of the variance in urban vitality (over 40%), while both betweenness and closeness explain roughly 28% of urban vitality. Efficiency and severance contribute 22 and 10% to the spatial heterogeneity of urban vitality, respectively. The study sheds light on the mechanisms between street configurations and urban vitality from the multi-scalar perspective. Some implications are provided for the improvement of the streets' urban vitality.

Abstract:This study investigates certain correlations between the impacts of urban and building form and microclimate on the energy consumption of buildings. It applies microscopic elements such as urban form and tissue, building form and character, and microclimate as factors in the energy consumption of buildings. To this end, the energy consumption of selected buildings in Seoul in August of 2014 was analyzed. Based on microscopic elements within a radius of 500 meters of 23 Automated Weather Station (AWS) measurement points selected by the Meteorological Office of the City of Seoul, the study employed both ordinary least square (OLS) and gamma regression, techniques that have been widely applied in this field of study. The analysis results show that compared to OLS, gamma regression is more suitable for analyzing the energy consumption of buildings. With the exception of a few elements, the urban form and character elements demonstrate a significant relation to the energy consumption of buildings. It is also found that microclimate elements such as wind speed and humidity are pertinent to the energy consumption of buildings. This study is expected to contribute to the foundation for the formation of sustainable and resilient cities through the reduction of energy consumption.

Abstract:The widespread availability of open datasets in cities is transforming the way urban energy systems are planned, simulated, and visualized. In this paper, a cross-scale approach is pursued to better understand the reciprocal effects between building energy performance, the urban climate, and urban dwellers' indoor and outdoor thermal comfort. On the one hand, monthly building electricity and gas demand data at the parcel level was collected, along with hourly weather station data at the urban scale. On the other hand, a longitudinal experiment was carried out in which 22 participants wore smartwatches for 4–6 weeks and filled out hourly micro surveys on their activities, location, and thermal comfort. In addition to survey responses, the smartwatches collected participants' physiological data and location throughout the period of the study. The project was conducted in Seoul, South Korea, the highest-ranked Asian country in open data readiness, implementation, and impact. This paper reports on the data collection effort and provides some preliminary analysis of the results. The work carried out is expected to help develop methodologies for the convergence of district-scale and occupant-scale data in urban areas. A number of expected applications are proposed, including urban-scale studies on the impact of urban form on the local climate and building energy performance, district-to-building-scale building energy simulations accounting for occupant thermal comfort-related behaviors, and district-scale analyses of occupants' outdoor thermal comfort and its relationship with location and wayfinding in urban areas.
How can the urban landscape affect urban vitality at the street block level? A case study of 15 metropolises in China

Abstract:Urban vitality, as a metric, measures the attractiveness and competitiveness of a city and is a driver of development. As the physical and social space of human activities, the urban landscape has close connections with urban vitality according to classical theories. However, limited quantitative criteria for the urban landscape and gaps between macro urban planning and micro design create difficulties when constructing a vibrant city. In this study, we quantitatively examined the relationship between the urban landscape and urban vitality at the street block level using geospatial open data to discover where, how, and to what extent we could improve urban vitality, taking 15 Chinese metropolises as a case study. Results indicate that, among the three aspects of the urban landscape considered, the city plan pattern has the highest effect on stimulating vitality, followed by the land use and the patterns of building form. Specifically, the three-dimensional form of buildings has a greater effect than a two-dimensional form. In addition, convenient transportation, a compact block form, diverse buildings, mixed land use, and high buildings are the main characteristics of vibrant blocks. The results also show that the effects of the urban landscape have spatial variations and obvious diurnal discrepancies. Furthermore, over 20 and 33% of the blocks in these cities are identified as low-vitality blocks during the day and night, respectively, and are then categorized into six different types. The identification of the common characteristics of these low-vitality blocks can be taken as references for designing a vibrant urbanity.

Residential environmental satisfaction, social capital, and place attachment: the case of Seoul, Korea

Abstract:This study examines the relationship between residential environmental satisfaction, social capital, and place attachment. Previous studies on place attachment and residential environments have not fully considered the components of residential environments or executed an integrated analysis. This study includes diverse aspects of residential environmental satisfaction such as accessibility, comfort, and safety, which permits a comparison of the influence of each element. Furthermore, this study examined the mediating effect of social capital between residential environments and place attachment. Online surveys were conducted with 750 residents in the metropolitan city of Seoul, Korea, and mediation regression analysis as employed. The results indicated that residential environmental satisfaction had a positive effect on place attachment. In particular, accessibility had the greatest effect on place attachment. Furthermore, social capital had a mediating effect on all sub-components of residential environments. Today, many countries, including China and India, pursue and experience rapid urbanization much like Seoul, which has undergone it over several decades. However, this causes a variety of urban problems that might hinder long-term sustainable development. Therefore, this study suggests that the importance of qualitative development for sustainability should be recognized and incorporated together with quantitative development.

Abstract:This research investigates how access to eight urban amenities impacts people's satisfaction with the urban environment in four new towns close to Seoul, the capital of South Korea. A Structural Equation Model (SEM) is used to analyze how the objective environment affects satisfaction with the urban environment through factors such as the perceived evaluation of the objective environment. The findings indicate that having easy access to urban parks, schools, shopping facilities, medical service facilities, and sports facilities is linked to higher levels of satisfaction with the urban environment. While some amenities indirectly affect satisfaction, shopping and sports facilities have a direct and indirect effect on overall satisfaction. The study also suggests that while people's perception of crime prevention influences satisfaction with the urban environment, accessibility to police stations does not have a significant impact on satisfaction with either crime prevention or the urban environment, highlighting the need to identify other factors that influence satisfaction with crime prevention measures. Overall, the research provides evidence to support the importance of proximity to urban amenities, and identifies which amenities are crucial to enhance the quality of urban life.
