Landscape Ecology

Abstract:We summarize the foundational elements of a new area of research we call soundscape ecology. The study of sound in landscapes is based on an understanding of how sound, from various sources—biological, geophysical and anthropogenic—can be used to understand coupled natural-human dynamics across different spatial and temporal scales. Useful terms, such as soundscapes, biophony, geophony and anthrophony, are introduced and defined. The intellectual foundations of soundscape ecology are described—those of spatial ecology, bioacoustics, urban environmental acoustics and acoustic ecology. We argue that soundscape ecology differs from the humanities driven focus of acoustic ecology although soundscape ecology will likely need its rich vocabulary and conservation ethic. An integrative framework is presented that describes how climate, land transformations, biodiversity patterns, timing of life history events and human activities create the dynamic soundscape. We also summarize what is currently known about factors that control temporal soundscape dynamics and variability across spatial gradients. Several different phonic interactions (e.g., how anthrophony affects biophony) are also described. Soundscape ecology tools that will be needed are also discussed along with the several ways in which soundscapes need to be managed. This summary article helps frame the other more application-oriented papers that appear in this special issue.

Abstract:Humans use two mechanisms for detecting the direction of sound waves, based on diffraction and time of arrival, respectively (Shaw 1974, Yost and Gourevitch 1987, Brown 1994). The presence of the body may disturb the sound wave so that the sound pressure at the surface of the body differs from that in the undisturbed sound wave (diffraction). The sound pressure at a particular position on the surface, for example, the location of an ear, varies with the direction of sound incidence. Diffraction occurs when the dimensions of the body (head) are larger than one-tenth the wavelength of the sound. The sound spectra at the two ears differ for most sound directions if the ears are some distance apart. It is thus possible for the brain to estimate the direction of the sound source by comparing the sound spectra at the two ears. This task is easier with broad-band sounds than with pure tones or narrow-band sounds.

Abstract:The aim of this book is to discuss “sensory ecology”, that is the adaptation of sense organs to the properties of the environments. For hearing organs, it is at present only possible to describe such a correlation for hearing in air and water. Some physical parameters are different in these two homogeneous media (see below), and the hearing organs are adapted to the medium in which they are being used (references to the literature on hearing in fish, seals and whales can be found in Schuijf and Hawkins, 1976;, Møhl and Ronald, 1975; and Payne and Webb, 1971). The vast majority of hearing animals, however, live in terrestrial environments, and very little is known about the acoustical properties of these environments.

Abstract:Most sounds of interest consist of complex, time-dependent admixtures of tones of diverse frequencies and variable amplitudes. To detect and process these signals, the ear employs a highly nonlinear, adaptive, real-time spectral analyzer: the cochlea. Sound excites vibration of the eardrum and the three miniscule bones of the middle ear, the last of which acts as a piston to initiate oscillatory pressure changes within the liquid-filled chambers of the cochlea. The basilar membrane, an elastic band spiraling along the cochlea between two of these chambers, responds to these pressures by conducting a largely independent traveling wave for each frequency component of the input. Because the basilar membrane is graded in mass and stiffness along its length, however, each traveling wave grows in magnitude and decreases in wavelength until it peaks at a specific, frequency-dependent position: low frequencies propagate to the cochlear apex, whereas high frequencies culminate at the base. The oscillations of the basilar membrane deflect hair bundles, the mechanically sensitive organelles of the ear's sensory receptors, the hair cells. As mechanically sensitive ion channels open and close, each hair cell responds with an electrical signal that is chemically transmitted to an afferent nerve fiber and thence into the brain. Abstract:The sounds produced by animals have been a topic of research into animal behaviour for a very long time. If acoustic signals are undoubtedly a vehicle for exchanging information between individuals, environmental sounds embed as well a significant level of data related to the ecology of populations, communities and landscapes. The consideration of environmental sounds for ecological investigations opens up a field of research that we define with the term ecoacoustics. In this paper, we draw the contours of ecoacoustics by detailing: the main theories, concepts and methods used in ecoacoustic research, and the numerous outcomes that can be expected from the ecological approach to sound. Ecoacoustics has several theoretical and practical challenges, but we firmly believe that this new approach to investigating ecological processes will generate abundant and exciting research programs.

Abstract:This work reviews the human auditory system, elucidating some of the specialized mechanisms and non-linear pathways along the chain of events between physical sound and its perception. Customary relationships between frequency, time, and phase--such as the uncertainty principle--that hold for linear systems, do not apply straightforwardly to the hearing process. Auditory temporal resolution for certain processes can be a hundredth of the period of the signal, and can extend down to the microseconds time scale. The astonishingly large number of variations that correspond to the neural excitation pattern of 30000 auditory nerve fibers, originating from 3500 inner hair cells, explicates the vast capacity of the auditory system for the resolution of sonic detail. And the ear is sensitive enough to detect a basilar-membrane amplitude at the level of a picometer, or about a hundred times smaller than an atom. This article surveys and provides new insights into some of the impressive capabilities of the human auditory system and explores their relationship to fidelity in reproduced sound.

Abstract:Protected areas are critical locations worldwide for biodiversity preservation and offer important opportunities for increasingly urbanized humans to experience nature. However, biodiversity preservation and visitor access are often at odds and creative solutions are needed to safeguard protected area natural resources in the face of high visitor use. Managing human impacts to natural soundscapes could serve as a powerful tool for resolving these conflicting objectives. Here, we review emerging research that demonstrates that the acoustic environment is critical to wildlife and that sounds shape the quality of nature-based experiences for humans. Human-made noise is known to affect animal behavior, distributions and reproductive success, and the organization of ecological communities. Additionally, new research suggests that interactions with nature, including natural sounds, confer benefits to human welfare termed psychological ecosystem services. In areas influenced by noise, elevated human-made noise not only limits the variety and abundance of organisms accessible to outdoor recreationists, but also impairs their capacity to perceive the wildlife that remains. Thus soundscape changes can degrade, and potentially limit the benefits derived from experiences with nature via indirect and direct mechanisms. We discuss the effects of noise on wildlife and visitors through the concept of listening area and demonstrate how the perceptual worlds of both birds and humans are reduced by noise. Finally, we discuss how management of soundscapes in protected areas may be an innovative solution to safeguarding both and recommend several key questions and research directions to stimulate new research.

Abstract:The sound propagating in a turbulent atmosphere fluctuates in amplitude and phase. This phenomenon, known as acoustic scintillation, is caused by random fluctuations in the acoustic refractive index of the air induced by atmospheric turbulence. Auralization techniques should consider this phenomenon to increase the realism of the synthetic sound. This paper proposes a physics-based formulation to model sequences of log-amplitude and phase fluctuations of a sound propagating in a turbulent atmosphere. This method applies to slanted and vertical propagation of the sound, which is useful for simulating elevated noise sources such as aircraft, drones, and wind turbines. The theoretical framework is based on the spatial correlation functions for the log-amplitude and phase fluctuations for spherical waves, the von Kármán spectrum, and similarity theories to model atmospheric turbulence. Two applications with audio files are presented to demonstrate the applicability of this method to tonal and broadband noise.

Abstract:Factoring the pressure field of a harmonic sound wave into its amplitude and phase profiles provides the foundation for an analytical framework for studying acoustic forces that not only provides insights into the forces exerted by specified sound waves but also addresses the inverse problem of designing sound waves to implement desired force landscapes. We illustrate the benefits of this acoustokinetic framework through case studies of purely nonconservative force fields, standing waves, pseudostanding waves, and tractor beams.

Abstract:An experimental study of strings, woodwind (organ pipe, flute, clarinet, saxophone and recorder) and the voice was undertaken to illustrate the basic principles of sound production in musical instruments. The setup used is simple and consists of common laboratory equipment. The canonical examples (standing wave on a string, in an open and closed pipe) are easily reproduced. The characteristics of the instruments are outlined and discussed.

Abstract:Room acoustics is commonly regarded and studied as an applied subdiscipline of engineering acoustics. It is likely for this reason that many textbooks and lecture notes on the topic provide a too brief, unsystematic, and incomplete physical basics of the theory, while focusing on the practical aspects of calculation, measurement, assessment, and optimization of sound fields in rooms, such as lecture halls, control rooms, concert halls, and opera houses. While such approach may be satisfactory for a broad community of acoustic engineers, it leaves many important physical concepts and mechanisms obscure and their understanding superficial and unsolid, especially among inexperienced practitioners and students. The main purpose of this text is to provide a brief yet self-contained introduction to the physics of room acoustics or, more generally, acoustics of closed spaces, starting with the governing equations of fluid dynamics. While covering all essential topics and concepts in the field, such as modal analysis, geometrical and statistical theory, room impulse response, subjective criteria and descriptors of sound fields in rooms, acoustic design and simulations, and acoustic elements (reflectors, absorbers, and diffusers), it does so in a systematic and, arguably, didactically more appropriate way. The rigorous derivations of many important theoretical results rely on well-established methods of modern mathematical physics, but require only basic mathematical skills of the reader, since all mathematical tools are introduced and explained in sufficient detail. On the other hand, the thorough derivations expose the underlying assumptions and limitations of the obtained results, the proper understanding of which is crucial for the correct use of the results in practice.

Abstract:We live in a richly structured auditory environment. From the sounds of cars charging towards us on the street to the sounds of music filling a dancehall, sounds like these are generally seen as being instances of things we hear but can also be understood as opportunities for action. In some circumstances, the sound of a car approaching towards us can provide critical information for the avoidance of harm. In the context of a concert venue, sociocultural practices like music can equally afford coordinated activities of movement, such as dancing or music making. Despite how evident the behavioral effects of sound are in our everyday experience, they have been sparsely accounted for within the field of psychology. Instead, most theories of auditory perception have been more concerned with understanding how sounds are passively processed and represented and how they convey information of the world, neglecting than how this information can be used for anything. Here, we argue against these previous rationalizations, suggesting instead that information is instantiated through use and, therefore, is an emergent effect of a perceiver’s interaction with their environment. Drawing on theory from psychology, philosophy and anthropology, we contend that by thinking of sounds as materials, theorists and researchers alike can get to grips with the vast array of auditory affordances that we purposefully bring into use when interacting with the environment.

Abstract:Background: The field of acoustic ecology emerged from Simon Fraser University in the late 1960s during which time R. Murray Schafer and the World Soundscape Project studied everyday soundscapes and the rise of urban noise. While it was an innovative approach to understanding the relationship between humans and their environments, it reproduced the dominant frameworks of this period. Analysis: This article argues that contemporary acoustic ecology discourse continues to frame noise, silence, and urban acoustic design through a white normative and colour-blind listening framework. This article examines dominant authorship and citation practices within leading journals that publish soundscape literature as well as sound mapping practices. Conclusion: After also surveying seldom-cited soundscape research that interrogates the environmental listening and sound-making practices of BIPOC and marginalized communities, the article concludes that there is a need for contemporary soundscape research to incorporate more intersectional and decolonial modes of environmental listening.

Abstract:The auditory sense of humans transforms intrinsically senseless pressure waveforms into spectacularly rich perceptual phenomena: the music of Bach or the Beatles, the poetry of Li Bai or Omar Khayyam, or more prosaically the sense of the world filled with objects emitting sounds that is so important for those of us lucky enough to have hearing. Whereas the early representations of sounds in the auditory system are based on their physical structure, higher auditory centers are thought to represent sounds in terms of their perceptual attributes. In this symposium, we will illustrate the current research into this process, using four case studies. We will illustrate how the spectral and temporal properties of sounds are used to bind together, segregate, categorize, and interpret sound patterns on their way to acquire meaning, with important lessons to other sensory systems as well.

Abstract:Our planet is facing unprecedented adversity due to the global impacts of climate change and an emerging sixth mass extinction. These impacts are exacerbated by population and industrial growth, where increased resource extraction is required to meet our insatiable demands. Yet, the tangible elements of our lone inhabited planet in the solar system are not the only things disappearing or being modified. The sounds of Earth are being altered in ways that may never be recovered. Indeed, we occupy a noisier world in this age of machines that comes at a great expense in the form of sonic extinctions. It is profoundly apparent, yet not widely recognized, that conservation efforts must consider the importance of the sonic environment (i.e., sonosphere). Although sound has been integral to life for millions of years, our understanding of its ecological role has only just begun. Sounds are one of the most important extensions of the organismic inner world, becoming testimonials of environmental complexity, integration, and relationships between apparently separated parts. From a semiotic perspective, sounds are signals utilized by many organisms to save energy in patrolling, defending, exploring, and navigating their surroundings. Sounds are tools that establish dynamic biological and ecological competencies through refined partitioning in the natural selection process of evolution. Ecoacoustics is a recent scientific discipline that aims to investigate the role of sound in ecological processes. Despite its youth, Ecoacoustics has had rapid theoretical and applied growth, consolidating a diverse array of research on the ecology of sounds across many disciplines. Here, we present how Ecoacoustics plays a significant role in conservation ecology by exploring the discipline's theoretical framework, new descriptors of sonic complexity, and innovative methods for supporting conservation efforts from singular species to entire landscapes across local and global scales. The combination of automated recording units and ecoacoustic indices present a very promising approach to the study of remote areas, rare species, and data rich analyses. While Ecoacoustics scientists continue to explore this new scientific horizon, we encourage others to consider Ecoacoustics in their conservation agendas because of its application to the study and management of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater habitats.
Music, cells and the dimensionality of nature

Abstract:One of the foundational principles of recent developments in evolutionary biology has been the acknowledgement of homeostasis as an organising principle of cellular development from unicellular origins. Fundamentally, this concerns the balance between the inside of a biological entity and its environment. Given that the organ of balance is the ear, and that the evolutionary provenance of the vestibular system can be traced back to fish, music provides a rich foundation for evolutionary biological inquiry. This paper considers a specific dimensional relationship in sonic experience between noise, signal, redundancy and anticipation. Drawing on the physics of Bohm and more recent developments in Rowlands's nilpotent quantum mechanics, I argue that the relationship between these four parameters is not only that they represent aspects of sonic experience, but that they are dimensionally distinct, where noise can be considered to be scalar, a signal (or a note) is a vector (having magnitude and direction), redundancy is bi-vectorial (involving degrees of repetition of signals over time), and anticipation is tri-vectorial (involving reflexive consideration of different orders of redundancy). In outlining the dimensional distinction between these variables, an analysis is presented which considers the relationship between the Shannon entropy of different dimensions in music. This shows that the entropy of noise has a particular bearing on the entropy of the other dimensions. This dimensional relation is also reflected in biological evidence, where Torday has shown there to be a direct correlation between the effect of gravitational "noise" on cellular communication, and by extension the evolution of consciousness.

Abstract:A primary complaint of people with hearing impairment is difficulty understanding speech in noise ( Woods et al. 2015 ). As such, substantial knowledge has been acquired about mechanisms underlying speech perception ( Pardo et al. 2021 ) and a wide arsenal of speech-in-noise test batteries has been developed ( Ellis et al. 2016 ; Kuk et al. 2020 ; Zaar et al. 2023 ). In contrast, little is known about auditory perception of so-called "environmental sounds"—that is nonlinguistic sounds corresponding to either nonspeech natural sounds (e.g., sounds of nature such as animal vocalizations and geophysical sounds including wind, rain, stream sounds), mechanical or electronic machines, and human activity—or how it is affected in people with hearing loss. This is curious considering the long-recognized importance of environmental sounds for ensuring a person's awareness of, and connection to, objects and events in the immediate environment ( Ramsdell 1978 ; Gaver 1993 ). Following the ecological perspective introduced by Gibson (1966 ) in vision sciences, and later expanded by Gaver (1993 ) and Neuhoff (2004 ) in hearing sciences, it is essential to consider the broad functional significance of all elements of the soundscape in the context of everyday human behavior. People spend less time in situations involving speech communication than in situations where they are monitoring surroundings, that is, when they are collecting nonlinguistic information to build a perceptual representation of their close environment to orient, navigate, and assess potential resources, opportunities for action, and danger ( Keidser et al. 2020 ; Smeds et al. 2020 ; Lorenzi et al. 2023 ). Of particular interest, in addition to communication needs, is the role of natural sounds in the (re)habilitation of permanent hearing loss, which falls under the domain of human auditory ecology.

Criticality and Chaos in Auditory and Vestibular Sensing

Abstract:The auditory and vestibular systems exhibit remarkable sensitivity of detection, responding to deflections on the order of Angstroms, even in the presence of biological noise. Further, these complex systems exhibit high temporal acuity and frequency selectivity, allowing us to make sense of the acoustic world around us. As this acoustic environment of interest spans several orders of magnitude in both amplitude and frequency, these systems rely heavily on nonlinearities and power-law scaling. The behavior of these sensory systems has been extensively studied in the context of dynamical systems theory, with many empirical phenomena described by critical dynamics. Other phenomena have been explained by systems in the chaotic regime, where weak perturbations drastically impact the future state of the system. We first review the conceptual framework behind these two types of detectors, as well as the detection features that they can capture. We then explore the intersection of the two types of systems and propose ideal parameter regimes for auditory and vestibular systems.

Abstract:The concept of soundscape was originally coined to study the relationship between humans and their sonic environment. Since then, several definitions of soundscapes have been proposed based on musical, acoustical and ecological perspectives. However, the causal mechanisms that underlie soundscapes have often been overlooked. As a consequence, the term “soundscape” is frequently used in an ambiguous way, alternatively pointing to objective realities or subjective percepts. Through an interdisciplinary review, we identified the main biotic and abiotic factors that condition non-anthropogenic terrestrial soundscapes. A source-filter approach was used to describe sound sources, sound propagation phenomena and receiver’s characteristics. Interdisciplinary information was cross-referenced in order to define relationships between factors, sound sources and filters. Those relationships and the associated references were organized into a functional block diagram. This representation was used to question the different uses and meanings of the soundscape concept found in the literature. Three separate categories were then suggested: distal soundscape, proximal soundscape and perceptual soundscape. Finally, practical examples of these different categories were described, in relation to the diagram. This new systemic approach to soundscapes should help ecoacousticians, bioacousticians, psychoacousticians and environmental managers to better understand soundscapes and protect natural areas in a more significant way.
