Abstract:Quantum protocols often require the generation of specific quantum states. We describe a quantum algorithm for generating any prescribed quantum state. For an important subclass of states, including pure symmetric states, this algorithm is efficient.

Abstract:We propose modulation protocols designed to generate, store and transfer compact localized states in a quantum network. Induced by parameter tuning or local reflection symmetries, such states vanish outside selected domains of the complete system and are therefore ideal for information storage. Their creation and transfer is here achieved either via amplitude phase flips or via optimal temporal control of inter-site couplings. We apply the concept to a decorated, locally symmetric Lieb lattice where one sublattice is dimerized, and also demonstrate it for more complex setups. The approach allows for a flexible storage and transfer of states along independent paths in lattices supporting flat energetic bands. The generic network and protocols proposed can be utilized in various physical setups such as atomic or molecular spin lattices, photonic waveguide arrays, and acoustic setups.

Optimized Distribution of Entanglement Graph States in Quantum Networks

Abstract:Building large-scale quantum computers, essential to demonstrating quantum advantage, is a key challenge. Quantum Networks (QNs) can help address this challenge by enabling the construction of large, robust, and more capable quantum computing platforms by connecting smaller quantum computers. Moreover, unlike classical systems, QNs can enable fully secured long-distance communication. Thus, quantum networks lie at the heart of the success of future quantum information technologies. In quantum networks, multipartite entangled states distributed over the network help implement and support many quantum network applications for communications, sensing, and computing. Our work focuses on developing optimal techniques to generate and distribute multipartite entanglement states efficiently. Prior works on generating general multipartite entanglement states have focused on the objective of minimizing the number of maximally entangled pairs (EPs) while ignoring the heterogeneity of the network nodes and links as well as the stochastic nature of underlying processes. In this work, we develop a hypergraph based linear programming framework that delivers optimal (under certain assumptions) generation schemes for general multipartite entanglement represented by graph states, under the network resources, decoherence, and fidelity constraints, while considering the stochasticity of the underlying processes. We illustrate our technique by developing generation schemes for the special cases of path and tree graph states, and discuss optimized generation schemes for more general classes of graph states. Using extensive simulations over a quantum network simulator (NetSquid), we demonstrate the effectiveness of our developed techniques and show that they outperform prior known schemes by up to orders of magnitude.

Network mechanism for generating genuinely correlative Gaussian states

Abstract:Generating a long-distance quantum state with genuine quantum correlation (GQC) is one of the most essential functions of quantum networks to support quantum communication. Here, we provide a deterministic scheme for generating multimode Gaussian states with certain GQC (including genuine entanglement). Efficient algorithms of generating multimode states are also proposed. Our scheme is useful for resolving the bottleneck in generating some multimode Gaussian states and may pave the way towards real world applications of preparing multipartite quantum states in current quantum technologies.

Abstract:Using the recent ability of quantum computers to initialize quantum states rapidly with high fidelity, we use a function operating on a discrete set to create a simple class of quantum channels. Fixed points and periodic orbits, that are present in the function, generate fixed points and periodic orbits in the associated quantum channel. Phenomenology such as periodic doubling is visible in a 6 qubit dephasing channel constructed from a truncated version of the logistic map. Using disjoint subsets, discrete function-generated channels can be constructed that preserve coherence within subspaces. Error correction procedures can be in this class as syndrome detection uses an initialized quantum register. A possible application for function-generated channels is in hybrid classical/quantum algorithms. We illustrate how these channels can aid in carrying out classical computations involving iteration of non-invertible functions on a quantum computer with the Euclidean algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor of two integers.

Abstract:A new construction scheme of a universal quantum network which is compatible with the known quantum gate-assembly schemes is proposed. Our quantum network is standard, easy-assemble, reusable, scalable and even potentially programmable. Moreover, we can construct a whole quantum network to implement the general quantum algorithm and quantum simulation procedure. In the above senses, it is a realization of the quantum central processing unit.

Abstract:The generation and verification of quantum states are fundamental tasks for quantum information processing that have recently been investigated by Irani, Natarajan, Nirkhe, Rao and Yuen [CCC 2022], Rosenthal and Yuen [ITCS 2022], Metger and Yuen [FOCS 2023] under the term \emph{state synthesis}. This paper studies this concept from the viewpoint of quantum distributed computing, and especially distributed quantum Merlin-Arthur (dQMA) protocols. We first introduce a novel task, on a line, called state generation with distributed inputs (SGDI). In this task, the goal is to generate the quantum state $U\ket{\psi}$ at the rightmost node of the line, where $\ket{\psi}$ is a quantum state given at the leftmost node and $U$ is a unitary matrix whose description is distributed over the nodes of the line. We give a dQMA protocol for SGDI and utilize this protocol to construct a dQMA protocol for the Set Equality problem studied by Naor, Parter and Yogev [SODA 2020], and complement our protocol by showing classical lower bounds for this problem. Our second contribution is a dQMA protocol, based on a recent work by Zhu and Hayashi [Physical Review A, 2019], to create EPR-pairs between adjacent nodes of a network without quantum communication. As an application of this dQMA protocol, we prove a general result showing how to convert any dQMA protocol on an arbitrary network into another dQMA protocol where the verification stage does not require any quantum communication.

Quantum state preparation for multivariate functions

Abstract:A fundamental step of any quantum algorithm is the preparation of qubit registers in a suitable initial state. Often qubit registers represent a discretization of continuous variables and the initial state is defined by a multivariate function. We develop protocols for preparing quantum states whose amplitudes encode multivariate functions by linearly combining block-encodings of Fourier and Chebyshev basis functions. Without relying on arithmetic circuits, quantum Fourier transforms, or multivariate quantum signal processing, our algorithms are simpler and more effective than previous proposals. We analyze requirements both asymptotically and pragmatically in terms of near/medium-term resources. Numerically, we prepare bivariate Student's t-distributions, 2D Ricker wavelets and electron wavefunctions in a 3D Coulomb potential, which are initial states with potential applications in finance, physics and chemistry simulations. Finally, we prepare bivariate Gaussian distributions on the Quantinuum H2-1 trapped-ion quantum processor using 24 qubits and up to 237 two-qubit gates.

Deterministic generation of qudit photonic graph states from quantum emitters

Abstract:We propose and analyze deterministic protocols to generate qudit photonic graph states from quantum emitters. We show that our approach can be applied to generate any qudit graph state, and we exemplify it by constructing protocols to generate one- and two-dimensional qudit cluster states, absolutely maximally entangled states, and logical states of quantum error correcting codes. Some of these protocols make use of time-delayed feedback, while others do not. The only additional resource requirement compared to the qubit case is the ability to control multi-level emitters. These results significantly broaden the range of multi-photon entangled states that can be produced deterministically from quantum emitters.

Abstract:We propose and analyze a probabilistic but heralded scheme to generate pure, entangled, non-Gaussian states of collective spin in large atomic ensembles by means of single-photon detection. One photon announces the preparation of a Dicke state, while two or more photons announce Schr\odinger cat states. The method produces pure states even for finite photon detection efficiency and weak atom-photon coupling. The entanglement generation can be made quasideterministic by means of repeated trial and feedback, enabling metrology beyond the standard quantum limit.
Multipartite state generation in quantum networks with optimal scaling

Abstract:We introduce a repeater scheme to efficiently distribute multipartite entangled states in a quantum network with optimal scaling. The scheme allows to generate graph states such as 2D and 3D cluster states of growing size or GHZ states over arbitrary distances, with a constant overhead per node/channel that is independent of the distance. The approach is genuine multipartite, and is based on the measurement-based implementation of multipartite hashing, an entanglement purification protocol that operates on a large ensemble together with local merging/connection of elementary building blocks. We analyze the performance of the scheme in a setting where local or global storage is limited, and compare it to bipartite and hybrid approaches that are based on the distribution of entangled pairs. We find that the multipartite approach offers a storage advantage, which results in higher efficiency and better performance in certain parameter regimes. We generalize our approach to arbitrary network topologies and different target graph states.

The Quantum Internet: an Efficient Stabilizer states Distribution Scheme

Abstract:Quantum networks constitute a major part of quantum technologies. They will boost distributed quantum computing drastically by providing a scalable modular architecture of quantum chips, or by establishing an infrastructure for measurement based quantum computing. Moreover, they will provide the backbone of the future quantum internet, allowing for high margins of security. Interestingly, the advantages that the quantum networks would provide for communications, rely on entanglement distribution, which suffers from high latency in protocols based on Bell pair distribution and bipartite entanglement swapping. Moreover, the designed algorithms for multipartite entanglement routing suffer from intractability issues making them unsolvable exactly in polynomial time. In this paper, we investigate a new approach for graph states distribution in quantum networks relying inherently on local quantum coding -- LQC -- isometries and on multipartite states transfer. Additionally, single-shot bounds for stabilizer states distribution are provided. Analogously to network coding, these bounds are shown to be achievable if appropriate isometries/stabilizer codes in relay nodes are chosen, which induces a lower latency entanglement distribution. As a matter of fact, the advantages of the protocol for different figures of merit of the network are provided.

Abstract:Generative models and in particular Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have become very popular and powerful data generation tool. In recent years, major progress has been made in extending this concept into the quantum realm. However, most of the current methods focus on generating classes of states that were supplied in the input set and seen at the training time. In this work, we propose a new hybrid classical-quantum method based on quantum Wasserstein GANs that overcomes this limitation. It allows to learn the function governing the measurement expectations of the supplied states and generate new states, that were not a part of the input set, but which expectations follow the same underlying function.

Quantum Generative Adversarial Networks: Generating and Detecting Quantum Product States

Abstract:Machine learning can be used as a systematic method to non-algorithmically program quantum computers. Quantum machine learning enables us to perform computations without breaking down an algorithm into its gate building blocks, eliminating that difficult step and potentially reducing unnecessary complexity. In addition, the machine learning approach is robust to both noise and to decoherence, which is ideal for running on inherently noisy NISQ devices which are limited in the number of qubits available for error correction. Here we apply our prior work in quantum machine learning technique, to create a QGAN, a quantum analog to the classical Stylenet GANs developed by Kerras for image generation and classification. A quantum system is used as a generator and a separate quantum system is used as a discriminator. The generator Hamiltonian quantum parameters are augmented by quantum style parameters which play the role of the style parameters used by Kerras. Both generator parameters are trained in a GAN MinMax problem along with quantum parameters of the discriminator Hamiltonian. We choose a problem to demonstrate the QGAN that has purely quantum information. The task is to generate and discriminate quantum product states. Real product states are generated to be detected and separated from fake quantum product states generated by the quantum generator. The problem of detecting quantum product states is chosen to demonstrate the QGAN because is well known as purely quantum mechanical, has no classical analog and is an open problem for quantum product states of more than 2 qubits. With proper encoding of image pixels into quantum states as density matrices, the method demonstrated here is applicable to GAN image generation and detection that can be hosted on and take advantage of the nature of quantum computers.

Neural-network states for the classical simulation of quantum computing

Abstract:Simulating quantum algorithms with classical resources generally requires exponential resources. However, heuristic classical approaches are often very efficient in approximately simulating special circuit structures, for example with limited entanglement, or based on one-dimensional geometries. Here we introduce a classical approach to the simulation of general quantum circuits based on neural-network quantum states (NQS) representations. Considering a set of universal quantum gates, we derive rules for exactly applying single-qubit and two-qubit Z rotations to NQS, whereas we provide a learning scheme to approximate the action of Hadamard gates. Results are shown for the Hadamard and Fourier transform of entangled initial states for systems sizes and total circuit depths exceeding what can be currently simulated with state-of-the-art brute-force techniques. The overall accuracy obtained by the neural-network states based on Restricted Boltzmann machines is satisfactory, and offers a classical route to simulating highly-entangled circuits. In the test cases considered, we find that our classical simulations are comparable to quantum simulations affected by an incoherent noise level in the hardware of about $10^{-3}$ per gate.

Sparse Probabilistic Synthesis of Quantum Operations

Abstract:Successful implementations of quantum technologies require protocols and algorithms that use as few quantum resources as possible. However, many important quantum operations, such as continuous rotation gates in quantum computing or broadband pulses in NMR or MRI applications, can only be implemented approximately using finite quantum resources. This work develops an approach that enables -- at the cost of a modestly increased measurement repetition rate -- exact implementations on average. One proceeds by first building a library of a large number of different approximations to the desired gate operation; by randomly selecting these operations according to a pre-optimised probability distribution, one can on average implement the desired operation with a rigorously controllable approximation error. The approach relies on sophisticated tools from convex optimisation to efficiently find optimal probability distributions. A diverse spectrum of applications are demonstrated as (a) exactly synthesising rotations in fault-tolerant quantum computers using only low T-count circuits and (b) synthesising broadband and band-selective pulses of superior performance in quantum optimal control with (c) further applications in NMR or MRI. The approach is very general and a broad spectrum of practical applications in quantum technologies are explicitly demonstrated.

Noise-robust proofs of quantum network nonlocality

Abstract:Quantum networks allow for novel forms of quantum nonlocality. By exploiting the combination of entangled states and entangled measurements, strong nonlocal correlations can be generated across the entire network. So far, all proofs of this effect are essentially restricted to the idealized case of pure entangled states and projective local measurements. Here we present noise-robust proofs of network quantum nonlocality, for a class of quantum distributions on the triangle network that are based on entangled states and entangled measurements. The key ingredient is a result of approximate rigidity for local distributions that satisfy the so-called ``parity token counting'' property with high probability. Considering quantum distributions obtained with imperfect sources, we obtain noise robustness up to $\sim 80\%$ for dephasing noise and up to $\sim 0.67\%$ for white noise. Additionally, we can prove that all distributions in the vicinity of some ideal quantum distributions are nonlocal, with a bound on the total-variation distance. Our work opens interesting perspectives towards the practical implementation of quantum network nonlocality.

Deterministic Generation of Multipartite Entanglement via Causal Activation in the Quantum Internet

Abstract:Entanglement represents ``\textit{the}'' key resource for several applications of quantum information processing, ranging from quantum communications to distributed quantum computing. Despite its fundamental importance, deterministic generation of maximally entangled qubits represents an on-going open problem. Here, we design a novel generation scheme exhibiting two attractive features, namely, i) deterministically generating different classes -- namely, GHZ-like, W-like and graph states -- of genuinely multipartite entangled states, ii) without requiring any direct interaction between the qubits. Indeed, the only necessary condition is the possibility of coherently controlling -- according to the indefinite causal order framework -- the causal order among the unitaries acting on the qubits. Through the paper, we analyze and derive the conditions on the unitaries for deterministic generation, and we provide examples for unitaries practical implementation. We conclude the paper by discussing the scalability of the proposed scheme to higher dimensional genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) states and by introducing some possible applications of the proposal for quantum networks.

Abstract:Quantum 7, 992 (2023). https://doi.org/10.22331/q-2023-04-27-992 Since linear-optical two-photon gates are inherently probabilistic, measurement-based implementations are particularly well suited for photonic platforms: a large highly-entangled photonic resource state, called a graph state, is consumed through measurements to perform a computation. The challenge is thus to produce these graph states. Several generation procedures, which use either interacting quantum emitters or efficient spin-photon interface, have been proposed to create these photonic graph states deterministically. Yet, these solutions are still out of reach experimentally since the state-of-the-art is the generation of a linear graph state. Here, we introduce near-deterministic solutions for the generation of graph states using the current quantum emitter capabilities. We propose hybridizing quantum-emitter-based graph state generation with all-photonic fusion gates to produce graph states of complex topology near-deterministically. Our results should pave the way towards the practical implementation of resource-efficient quantum information processing, including measurement-based quantum communication and quantum computing.
