Abstract:Materials with hyperbolic dispersion have recently garnered much attention in the optical and quantum communities due to their potential for controlling large- $k$ waves over a broad wavelength range. Their rarity has motivated many fundamental studies at microwave frequencies to improve their applications with full utilization of large- $k$ waves. Here, we report that hyperbolic dispersion can be mimicked by exploiting the structural dispersion of electromagnetic modes in waveguides filled with anisotropic dielectric materials. As demonstrated, the material parameters in the waveguide are subtly designed, and effective hyperbolic dispersion is achieved, which can reduce the dielectric loss and nonlocal effects related to the finite thickness of the discrete constituent elements of metamaterials at microwave frequencies. Numerical simulations are performed, including negative and anomalous refractions, negative reflection, and directional hyperbolic polaritons to validate the analytical results. The present method paves the way for the development of hyperbolic metamaterials at microwave frequencies.

Abstract:Hyperbolic metamaterials have attracted considerable interest in the research community for their peculiar ability to enhance control of electromagnetic waves' propagation. Although conformal transformation optics provides a unique platform for metamaterials design, this method has not been used for hyperbolic metamaterials yet. This comes from the lack of a well-defined mathematical structure. We extend conformal transformation optics to hyperbolic metamaterials, by applying Clifford algebra to analyze light propagation. We will show that the effective line element of a trajectory of light propagation conforms to ultrahyperbolic—not Euclidean—geometry. We also, by using conformal hyperbolic mapping, obtain all conformal spaces with Minkowski space-time. Finally, we employ this theory to study the electric-field pattern of dipoles.

Abstract:Hyperbolic metamaterials (HMs) supporting hyperbolic isofrequency curves (IFCs) provide unprecedented control on wave propagation and light‐matter interaction. However, in the microwave regime, ultrahigh wave vectors and customizable permittivity tensors cannot be supported simultaneously by current common HMs. Based on the waveguide principle, low‐loss waveguide‐type HMs (WHMs) are suggested as a new geometry format of microwave HMs, flexibly mixing positive and negative components in their effective permittivity tensors. Then, a deeply subwavelength WHM cavity, confirming the existence of giant wave vectors, is demonstrated, whose transverse size has a potential to be reduced to three orders smaller than the working free‐space wavelength. Such a WHM cavity is also demonstrated to follow the fascinating anomalous scaling law originating from the unique shape of hyperbolic IFCs. As a low‐loss platform, WHMs are predicted to produce distinctive physical phenomena based on HMs and provide novel functional devices at low frequencies.

Abstract:We review the properties of hyperbolic metamaterials and show that they are promising candidates as substrates for nanoimaging, nanosensing, fluorescence engineering, and controlling thermal emission. Hyperbolic metamaterials can support unique bulk modes, tunable surface plasmon polaritons, and surface hyperbolic states (Dyakonov plasmons) that can be used for a variety of applications. We compare the effective medium predictions with practical realizations of hyperbolic metamaterials to show their potential for radiative decay engineering, bioimaging, subsurface sensing, metaplasmonics, and super-Planckian thermal emission.

Abstract:We propose a novel, miniaturized astigmatic optical element based on a single biaxial hyperbolic metamaterial that enables the conversion of Hermite-Gaussian beams into vortex beams carrying an orbital angular momentum and vice versa. As an example, we design a biaxial anisotropic metamaterial that introduces a π/2 phase shift between two orthogonal components of a Hermite-Gaussian beam due to the optical path difference and at the same time astigmatically focuses these orthogonal components such that they recombine in a symmetric Laguerre-Gaussian beam. We design the proposed device using an array of silver nanowires in an MgF(2) matrix. The advantages of the proposed approach over the existing bulk optics based techniques include compactness and therefore, compatibility with ultra-compact opto-electronic circuits, potential re-configurability and an increased tolerance to misalignment.
Topology optimization of broadband hyperbolic elastic metamaterials with super-resolution imaging

Abstract:Hyperbolic metamaterials are strongly anisotropic artificial composite materials at a subwavelength scale and can greatly widen the engineering feasibilities for manipulation of wave propagation. However, limited by the empirical structure topologies, the previously reported hyperbolic elastic metamaterials (HEMMs) suffer from the limitations of relatively narrow frequency width, inflexible adjusting operating subwavelength scale and being difficult to further ameliorate imaging resolution. Here, we develop an inverse-design approach for HEMMs by topology optimization based on the effective medium theory. We successfully design two-dimensional broadband HEMMs supporting multipolar resonances, and theoretically demonstrate their deep-subwavelength imagings for longitudinal waves. Under different prescribed subwavelength scales, the optimized HEMMs exhibit broadband negative effective mass densities. Moreover, benefiting from the extreme enhancement of evanescent waves, an optimized HEMM at the ultra-low frequency can yield a super-high imaging resolution (~{\lambda}/64), representing the record in the field of elastic metamaterials. The proposed computational approach can be easily extended to design hyperbolic metamaterials for other wave counterparts. The present research may provide a novel design methodology for exploring the HEMMs based on unrevealed resonances and serve as a useful guide for the ultrasonography and general biomedical applications.

Abstract:Hyperbolic lattices are a new type of synthetic materials based on regular tessellations in non-Euclidean spaces with constant negative curvature. While so far, there has been several theoretical investigations of hyperbolic topological media, experimental work has been limited to time-reversal invariant systems made of coupled discrete resonances, leaving the more interesting case of robust, unidirectional edge wave transport completely unobserved. Here, we report a non-reciprocal hyperbolic network that exhibits both Chern and anomalous chiral edge modes, and implement it on a planar microwave platform. We experimentally evidence the unidirectional character of the topological edge modes by direct field mapping. We demonstrate the topological origin of these hyperbolic chiral edge modes by an explicit topological invariant measurement, performed from external probes. Our work extends the reach of topological wave physics by allowing for backscattering-immune transport in materials with synthetic non-Euclidean behavior.

Abstract:Natural hyperbolic materials (HMs) in two dimensions (2D) have an extraordinarily high anisotropy and a hyperbolic dispersion relation. Some of them can even sustain hyperbolic polaritons with great directional propagation and light compression to deeply sub-wavelength scales due to their inherent anisotropy. Herein, the anisotropic optical features of 2D natural HMs are reviewed. Four hyperbolic polaritons (i.e., phonon polaritons, plasmon polaritons, exciton polaritons, and shear polaritons) as well as their generation mechanism are discussed in detail. The natural merits of 2D HMs hold promise for practical quantum photonic applications such as valley quantum interference, mid-infrared polarizers, spontaneous emission enhancement, near-field thermal radiation, and a new generation of optoelectronic components, among others. The conclusion of these analyses outlines existing issues and potential interesting directions for 2D natural HMs. These findings could spur more interest in anisotropic 2D atomic crystals in the future, as well as the quick generation of natural HMs for new applications.
Topological radiation engineering in hyperbolic sonic semimetals

Abstract:Hyperbolic dispersion enables unprecedented abilities for wave-field engineering which so far chiefly has been realized by man-made metamaterials. Recent classical explorations of topological media and semimetals suggest that these exotic structures may enable a novel route toward hyperbolic sound control. Here, we demonstrate that a three-dimensional acoustic semimetal implementation exhibits nodal lines of hyperbolic shape that are topologically protected due to translational symmetry. The structure comprises a cubic arrangement of crossed hollow channels whose hopping strengths are determined by their cross sections, which facilitate analytically exact prediction of tunable spin-Hall textures. Interestingly, thanks to these nodal signatures of hyperbolic shape, we are able to acquire an array of unusual emission features, spanning from directional collimation to either horizontally or vertically split radiation. We foresee that our findings will provide remarkable opportunities for advanced wave control with hyperbolic and topological attributes.

Abstract:In article number 1800081, Lei Zhou, Lin Chen, and co-workers propose an alternative approach to realize high-efficiency transmission-mode metasurfaces to control electromagnetic wave-fronts, based on hyperbolic metamaterial waveguides. An anomalous refracted beam is realized with a conversion efficiency of 42.9% in the microwave region and 77.9% in the near infrared region. This work may advance a new class of research to develop electromagnetic waves functional devices based on hyperbolic metamaterials, particularly at high frequencies, with the existing fabrication technology.

Abstract:Abstract Optical metamaterials have presented an innovative method of manipulating light. Hyperbolic metamaterials have an extremely high anisotropy with a hyperbolic dispersion relation. They are able to support high- k modes and exhibit a high density of states which produce distinctive properties that have been exploited in various applications, such as super-resolution imaging, negative refraction, and enhanced emission control. Here, state-of-the-art hyperbolic metamaterials are reviewed, starting from the fundamental principles to applications of artificially structured hyperbolic media to suggest ways to fuse natural two-dimensional hyperbolic materials. The review concludes by indicating the current challenges and our vision for future applications of hyperbolic metamaterials.
Negative Refraction of Ultra-Squeezed In-Plane Hyperbolic Designer Polaritons

Abstract:The in-plane negative refraction of high-momentum (i.e., high-k) photonic modes could enable many applications such as imaging, focusing, and waveguiding in a planar platform at deep-subwavelength scales. However, its practical implementation in experiments remains elusive so far. Here we propose a class of hyperbolic metasurfaces, which is characterized by an anisotropic magnetic sheet conductivity and can support the in-plane ultra-high-k magnetic designer polaritons. Based on such metasurfaces, we report the experimental observation of the all-angle negative refraction of designer polaritons at extremely deep-subwavelength scales. Moreover, we directly visualize the designer polaritons with hyperbolic dispersions. Importantly, for these hyperbolic polaritons, we find that their squeezing factor is ultra-large. To be specific, it can be up to 129 in the experiments, an ultra-high value exceeding those in naturally hyperbolic materials. This work may pave a way toward exploring the extremely high confinement and unusual propagation of magnetic designer polaritons over monolayer or twisted bilayer hyperbolic metasurfaces.

Abstract:We extend the transformation media concept to the linear liquid surface waves. A mapping is introduced to generate an anisotropic depth parameter that corresponds to the anisotropic permittivity tensor in electromagnetic waves. A device that can rotate the liquid wave front is introduced, which is an analog of the metamaterial electromagnetic wave field rotator. The structure is based on a layered design. Abstract:Hyperbolic metasurfaces (HMSs) that possess special dispersion properties have attracted immense attention owing to their capability of manipulating electromagnetic waves in the near field. However, in previous HMSs, electric and magnetic surface waves are excited and manipulated individually. Simultaneous control of electric and magnetic surface waves has not been studied, in particular, in HMSs with multiple energy bands. Here, we propose and demonstrate a 2D electromagnetic HMS that enables the propagation of both electric and magnetic surface waves by different means of terahertz radiation excitation, and there are independent self-collimation frequencies in the orthogonal directions. The experimental observations agree well with numerical simulations. A hyperlens realized by a plasmonic metamaterial

Abstract:We have designed and realized an optically non-existing transformation-medium, based on a specific plasmonic metamaterial. Such a medium can perfectly transport impinging waves at any incident angle under both TE and TM polarizations without phase accumulations. Effective medium theory, mode expansion theory and full-wave simulations are in consistency with each other and facilitated the design of realized samples. We demonstrated experimentally that a curved microwave sample fabricated based on our design can work as a hyperlens, with experimental results in excellent agreement full-wave simulations.
Graphene-based hyperbolic metamaterials for a tunable subwavelength dark hollow beam

Abstract:Hyperbolic metamaterials have recently been widely investigated in nanophotonics systems. Here, we propose an alternating graphene/${{\rm SiO}_2}$SiO2 multilayer structure as an anisotropic medium with hyperbolic dispersion. When in-plane and out-of-plane effective permittivity is negative and positive, respectively, the incident beam (transverse magnetic polarization wave) can be split into two subwavelength beams, and a dark hollow beam can be achieved for circularly polarized incidence. Also, the size of the dark hollow beam can be tuned by changing the Fermi level. Our method is believed to be used as a tunable optical tweezer for controlling molecules.

Abstract:Vertically stacked multiple atomically thin layers have recently widened the landscape of rich optical structures thanks to these quantum metamaterials or van der Waals (vdW) materials, featuring hyperbolic polaritons with unprecedented avenues for light. Despite their far‐reaching implications, most of their properties rest entirely on a trivial band topological origin. Here, we adopt a two‐dimensional (2D) approach towards a micromechanical vdW analogue that, as a result of engineered chiral and mirror symmetries, provides topologically resilient hyperbolic radiation of mechanical vibrations in the ultrasonic regime. By applying laser vibrometry of the micrometer‐sized metasurface, we are able to exhibit the exotic fingerprints of robust hyperbolic radiation spanning several frequencies, which beyond their physical relevance, may enable ultrasonic technologies. Abstract:Recent advances in hyperbolic metamaterials have spurred many breakthroughs in the field of light manipulation. However, the extremely high demands on the compositional materials and the relatively small effective permittivity coverage have greatly hindered the rapid development of hyperbolic metamaterials. Here, based on the proposed concept of structure-induced spoof surface plasmon, we prove that hyperbolic metamaterials with independent effective permittivity components can be constructed using arbitrary single dielectric. Moreover, the achievable ranges of the relative effective permittivity components are unlimited. Three proof-of-concept hyperbolic metamaterials with different permittivity tensors are designed and fabricated in which the unique anomalous diffraction is numerically and experimentally verified. To further illustrate the superiority of the method, we propose and demonstrate a novel all-metal hyperbolic metamaterial whose loss is extremely low.
