Abstract:It has been established that a key strategy for affecting the electronic structure and catalytic activity of polymer carbon nitrides (PCNs) is to incorporating defects into the material. Self-modification-deficient PCNs without the assistance of other species are rarely mentioned. We report a method where melamine, sealed in a crucible with aluminum foil, is thermally treated to create structural defects in PCNs. This process hinders ammonia release during the polymerization, encouraging defect formation. Such defects cause PCNs materials to form defect energy levels, which raise exciton densities and promote charge separation and migration. Resulting defects-modified PCNs (D-PCNM) demonstrate significantly better photocatalytic hydrogen performance production, up to fivefold compared to standard PCNs. This approach is applicable to PCNs from various precursors, enhancing their photocatalytic efficiency and offering new insights for defect engineering in polymeric materials and catalysis.
