Abstract:Abstrac t: In this paper, a spectral feature extraction method based on fast Fourier transformation for writer identifi cation is presented. According to the constructibility of the texture image of handwriting, we put forward an estimation method for mathematical expectation value of texture image’s spectral features. This method eliminates the randomness of spectral features and gets stable spectral features. The experiment results show that this approach enhances the identification accuracy to a large extent using data sets with large handwriting samples.

Abstract:The goal of spectral imaging is to capture the spectral signature of a target. Traditional scanning method for spectral imaging suffers from large system volume and low image acquisition speed for large scenes. In contrast, computational spectral imaging methods have resorted to computation power for reduced system volume, but still endure long computation time for iterative spectral reconstructions. Recently, deep learning techniques are introduced into computational spectral imaging, witnessing fast reconstruction speed, great reconstruction quality, and the potential to drastically reduce the system volume. In this article, we review state-of-the-art deep-learning-empowered computational spectral imaging methods. They are further divided into amplitude-coded, phase-coded, and wavelength-coded methods, based on different light properties used for encoding. To boost future researches, we've also organized publicly available spectral datasets.

Abstract:Drawing on the correspondence between spectral clustering, spectral dimensionality reduction, and the connections to the Markov chain theory, we present a novel unified framework for structural analysis of image database using spectral techniques. The framework provides a computationally efficient approach to both clustering and dimensionality reduction, or 2-D visualization. Within this framework, we can also infer the semantic degrees of the images, i.e. imagerank, which characterize the richness of semantics contained in the images. Some illustrative examples are discussed.

Abstract:Determining specific line‐crossing sequences has always posed a challenge for document examiners. Interactions between pen ink and stamp seal ink can be complicated and changeable due to the many seals and writing inks available in the market. This study determines the line‐crossing sequence of stamping before writing by observing the influence of seal ink on pen writing. The results of examining four types of pens and six types of seal ink crossings reveal that assessing the completeness of writing strokes can determine sequencing. Different ink types interact to produce different phenomena. In addition, time interval and pen structure affected the interaction between two inks in a crossing. A 70% accuracy rate was achieved in a nationwide blind test, which will be discussed in this article.

Abstract:Fingerprints are the best form of personal identification for criminal investigation purposes. We present a line-scanning Raman imaging system and use it to detect fingerprints composed of β-carotene and fish oil on different substrates. Although the line-scanning Raman system has been used to map the distribution of materials such as polystyrene spheres and minerals within geological samples, this is the first time to our knowledge that the method is used in imaging fingerprints. Two Raman peaks of β-carotene (501.2, 510.3 nm) are detected and the results demonstrate that both peaks can generate excellent images with little difference between them. The system operates at a spectra resolution of about 0.4 nm and can detect β-carotene signals in petroleum ether solution with the limit of detection of 3.4×10(-9) mol/L. The results show that the line-scanning Raman imaging spectroscopy we have built has a high accuracy and can be used in the detection of latent fingerprints in the future.
Determination of Crossing Sequences Between Laser Printed Text and Seal Impression by Ultraviolet Fluorescence

Abstract:Objective This paper aims to demonstrate a new, non-destructive, quick and reliable way for determining crossing sequence of laser printed text and stamped seal impression using ultraviolet fluorescence. Methods A Video Spectral Comparator(VSC5000) was applied. 72 document samples, prepared with 6 brands of laser printer and 3 types of inkpad, were examined under ultraviolet light with adjustment of parameters including color filter, contrast, brightness and others. Then fluorescence reflection on overlapping region of seal impression and printed text was observed. Results There was great difference at two crossing sequences, that is, printed text over seal impression and seal impression over printed text. In the crossing region of seal impression over printed text, the text was darker and wider, but the strokes maintained continuous and complete. In the crossing region of printed text over seal impression, the text kept the same color and width with those separated from the stamp impression, but some of them were interrupted or incomplete. Conclusions The ultraviolet fluorescence method is a very effective and attractive technique for determining the sequence of laser printed text and stamped seal impression. Some challenging samples such as year-long documents, unclear stamps, and those not covered yet here, can be detected in further study.

Abstract:Identifying the writing sequence of seals and signatures in documents is often performed and difficult to resolve in forensic determination. Morphological and physical-chemical analysis methods are often limited by the destructive nature of samples, a high signal response strength and specific materials. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) has been used as an alternative method because it can generate molecular images from many surfaces and produce rich chemical information. Herein, we developed a sequence identification method by coupling an air flow-assisted desorption electrospray ionization (AFADESI)-MSI system with a chemometric analysis, which can holistically and directly analyse document samples under ambient, moderate and selectable conditions and maintain the original appearance of the paper documents after sampling. By integrating principal component analysis (PCA) and the partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), equivocal point analysis can be objectively performed, where knowing the components of the seal or signature is not necessary to identify the sequence. In total, 28 prepared samples with known sequences and two original blind test samples were analysed. One prepared sample was analysed in negative ionization mode, and other samples were inferred in positive ionization mode. All writing sequences were in accordance with the actual case. The writing sequence of the blind testing of the original samples was correctly identified. This study provided a convenient, objective and quasi-nondestructive method to investigate the sequence differences among equivocal document samples and is promising for providing an alternative method for the sequence identification of seals and signatures in questionable documents.

Abstract:It is of great significance to digitize ancient paintings and calligraphy, especially for a country with five thousand years of history and rich cultural heritages. Millions of paintings and calligraphy are haunted by various diseases or even natural disasters and the only way to eternalize them is to store their digital replica in computers, which many museums and libraries are planned or started to do. A typical way to acquire them is use a linear CCD based large area table scanner. But this kind of solution has great drawbacks in terms of precision as well as scanning range, which prohibit its use in museums and libraries. Our lab has recently developed a new equipment to solve these drawbacks and hopefully it would shed new light on the documentation of ancient paintings and calligraphy.

Abstract:Examining the sequences of printing and writing is a significant method of determining the authenticity and validity of documents. Forensic document examiners have extensively studied crossing lines, which has produced useful information. However, the sequence for laser printing and rollerball pen writing without crossing strokes has not been studied. To solve this problem, volunteers were invited to write characters on A4 paper with different rollerball pens using two sequences. Four laser printers applied print to these sheets, and the materials were examined using an Optem A-Zoom2 video tomography microscope. Consequently, distinguishing features were noted between the materials produced in both sequences. These features might provide a scientific basis for accurately determining the sequence between laser printing and rollerball pen writing in the absence of intersecting strokes.

Abstract:The rising crime rate associated with document forgery has a significant impact on public safety and social stability. In document fraud cases, determining the origin of a particular stamp-pad ink is the most important objective. In this study, a comprehensive analysis of the volatile compounds in quick-drying stamp-pad inks from six commonly used brands were performed for the first time, utilizing a combination of headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) and multivariate statistical analysis methods. Visual and comparative analysis of the differential volatile components among different stamp-pad ink samples was conducted using fingerprints and volcano plots. A total of 127 volatile compounds were accurately identified, with ketones, esters, alcohols, and aldehydes being the most abundant compounds in the stamp-pad inks. Hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA), including dendrograms and clustering heatmaps, was utilized to explore the correlations between these compounds and the samples. Additionally, the precise identification of positional isomers and functional group isomers of aliphatic compounds was achieved. To achieve accurate discrimination of various stamp-pad ink samples, a multivariate statistical analysis method was utilized to establish a classification model for them. Based on the results obtained from HS-GC-IMS, effective discrimination among different brands of stamp-pad ink samples was achieved through principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). The model exhibited excellent performance, with the fit index of dependent variables (R 2 Y) and the predictive index of the model (Q 2 ) values of 0.99 and 0.984, respectively. These results provided significant theoretical evidence for the application of HS-GC-IMS as an efficient technique in the analysis of volatile compounds, identification of positional isomers and functional group isomers, as well as tracing the origin of stamp-pad ink and analyzing the formation time of documents.

Abstract:<p>Determining the sequence of intersection lines is a challenge in forensic document examination. To explore more advanced technology and meet the needs of practical applications, this study proposes a method based on the characteristics of the molten state to examine crossing‐line sequences. This state can be considered as a melting state of solid laser toner through a dissolution process. Experimental results demonstrate that the molten state is always visible at intersections when a particular ink is stamped after laser printing; however, the presence of the molten state when the seal is stamped before laser printing largely depends on the time interval between printing and stamping. The degree of error obtained through blind tests indicates that this approach has its limitations; however, a high accuracy, which refers to the ability of an examiner, was achieved with respect to determining the sequence of strokes when using a fluorescence method in conjunction with this method. This further indicated the limitation of a single method and the importance of combining multiple methods for document examinations.</p>

Abstract:The development of latent fingerprints on long-circulated RMB banknotes has been one of the challenging task in forensic science research. In this work, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) was used to perform chemical imaging of latent fingerprints on the surface of the substrate due to its advantages such as in-situ, quasi-nondestructive, high-throughput, simultaneous analysis of multi-components and high spatial resolution. The developing effect of TOF-SIMS was firstly compared with that of several traditional methods, and the reasons for the unique advantages of TOF-SIMS were discussed. Its applicability was further discussed from the perspective of universality, sensitivity and fingerprint three-level feature acquisition capability. Finally, exogenous substances in fingerprints were also analyzed by using this technology to detect the molecular ions (m/z 92.06) and fragment ion peaks (m/z 43.02) of glycerol in the moisture lotion and developed clear fingerprint images. Preliminary research results showed that TOF-SIMS technology could provide an effective method for the development of latent fingerprints on long-circulated RMB banknotes and was expected to be used for the detection of substances in fingerprints on the surface of various substrates.

Abstract:Fourier transform infrared microscope(FTIR Microscope) was used to identify the components of ballpoint writing inks on some paper. The result indicates that inks form different companies could be differentiated apparently, and data of dye and solvent in ink could be acquired rapidly. In addition, FTIR Microscope could also identify the writing density and the type of writing paper. All these suggested that FTIR Microscope. is a good nondestructive technique to identify ballpoint-writing inks.

Abstract:A systematically analytical method for the recongnition of blue ballpoint pen ink has been studied by ATR technique of Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectrometry. By using this method, a total of 108 blue ink samples have been divided to 18 groups depending on the main component. The spectral characteristics of these inks such as peak location, peak intensity etc, were described by the way of pattern recognition; and the species of inks have been able to be recognized by their correlation coefficient(A). This system has provided a best reliable and nondestructive method for the determination of ballpoint pen ink.

Abstract:In recent years, new technologies are emerging in the field of judicial expertise, followed by more arduous challenges. In this study, ink marks are used as an example. Meanwhile, machine learning and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) are used to analyze the ink marks. This is a new idea in the field of handwriting identification. First, the spectrum is obtained by LIBS. The characteristic spectral lines of C, N, O, Si, Mg, Al, and Ca are observed in the spectrum. Second, a detailed spectrum of the ink mark is provided in this article; in addition, different kinds of inks are used for analogy observation to analyze the influence of different components on ink marks. Finally, the K-nearest neighbor algorithm based on the principal component analysis is used to build the ink recognition model and then analyze the differences in different inks and build a database. The identification results become more intuitive and accurate combining machine learning based on big data, which provide reliable evidence for judicial expertise.

Abstract:In the field of questioned document examination, determining the sequence of intersecting lines is still a technical challenge. This study aims to validate whether confocal Raman spectroscopy can determine the sequence of intersecting lines created by laser prints toner and seal ink through empirical research. The study collected 110 varieties of seal ink and 1074 test pages from 66 models of laser printers available in the Chinese market. Based on the Raman spectral characteristics of the seal ink and the microscopic morphology of the toner, 13 types of seal ink and three types of laser printers were selected for further analysis, producing 78 representative samples of intersecting lines. Confocal Raman spectroscopy was applied to the examination of these samples using a point‐scanning mode for enhanced accuracy and efficiency. The experimental results demonstrate that confocal Raman spectroscopy can non‐destructively and quickly examine the sequence of intersecting lines produced by laser printer toner and seal ink. Variations in toner forms result in differing levels of difficulty in resolving intersection problems, with the sequence of intersecting lines from toner‐dense laser printers being the easiest to ascertain. In contrast, those from printers with porous and dispersed toner present a more significant challenge in examination. This study can be corroborated with other methods proposed, and more significantly, it lays the groundwork for addressing intersection problems related to other printing or writing instruments.

Abstract:In the field of document forensics, ink analysis plays a crucial role in determining the authenticity of legal and historic documents and detecting forgery. Visual examination alone is insufficient for distinguishing visually similar inks, necessitating the use of advanced scientific techniques. This paper proposes an ink analysis technique based on hyperspectral imaging, which enables the examination of documents in hundreds of narrowly spaced spectral bands, revealing hidden details. The main objective of this study is to identify the number of distinct inks used in a document. Three clustering algorithms, namely k-means, Agglomerative, and c-means, are employed to estimate the number of inks present. The methodology involves data extraction, ink pixel segmentation, and ink number determination. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique in identifying ink clusters and distinguishing between different inks. The analysis of a hyperspectral cube dataset reveals variations in spectral reflectance across different bands and distinct spectral responses among the 12 lines, indicating the presence of multiple inks. The clustering algorithms successfully identify ink clusters, with k-means clustering showing superior classification performance. Determining line-crossing sequences between laser printing and black ink using digital microscopy: The influence of writing tool and toner

Abstract:One of the recurring issues in forensic document analysis is determining the chronological order of line-crossing sequences. This seemingly simple but tricky task allows forensic laboratories to demonstrate the real order of events. The aim of this work is to analyse black ink/toner intersections using the digital microscope Hirox RH-2000. Five types of pens (ballpoint, gel, rollerball, fountain and fineliner) as well as five different laser printers were used to create the samples. Forensic examiners were tasked with assessing toner fractures, the bronzing effect, and gaps. The findings were analysed to determine the importance of each characteristic for each type of pen. Results indicate that observing the bronzing effect at high magnification (700x) is crucial for establishing the sequence order of application. In this regard, the fineliner pen is considered the most challenging type of pen to analyse in a black ink/toner intersection. The method was validated through a blind test. Based on this, a flow chart has been developed to assist the Forensic Document Examiners (FDEs) in their evaluations. The flow chart emphasises the significance of combining multiple observations and enables a more objective analysis for trained FDEs.
