Applied Composite Materials
Abstract:Plant fibers have the advantages of high specific strength and high specific modulus, diverse range of potential plant sources, low price and biodegradability. Accordingly, plant fiber reinforced composites are finding increasing utilization in the aerospace, automotive, and rail transportation industries, as well as many other sectors. However, the multi-scale microstructure and hydrophilic properties of plant fibers makes prediction of the aging properties of plant fiber reinforced composites challenging. Hydration can dramatically alter the physical, chemical and mechanical properties of plant fibers, thus impacting the integrity of fiber reinforced composites. This review article summarizes recent research relating to the hygrothermal aging of plant fiber reinforced composites, including (1) the aging mechanisms of plant fibers, resin matrices and reinforced composites; (2) effects of hygrothermal aging on composite mechanical properties; (3) aging simulation and prediction for plant fiber reinforced composites; and (4) future prospects of plant fiber reinforced composites with improved/predictable properties.
