Abstract:Until 1993, when I translated Anne of Green Gables, there were only abridged and altered translations in Japan. I have identified four major reasons for the deletions and changes made in these translations. My unabridged translations of the entire Anne series with hundreds of annotations in each book are revising the understanding and appreciation of Montgomery’s works in Japan.

Abstract:In modern Japan, especially in the Meiji period (1868-1912), translations occupied a dominant position in the literary polysystem. This paper claims that, since the Meiji period, “competing translational norms” have existed in the Japanese literary polysystem, which is to say that “literal” (adequate) and “free” (acceptable) translations have existed in parallel, vying for superior status. Moreover, this paper traces the literalist tradition in modern Japan. Though “literal” translation has been widely criticized, the styles and expressions it created have made a significant contribution to the founding and development of the modern Japanese language and its literature. Among the arguments in favor of literal translation, Iwano Homei’s literal translation strategy—the so-called “straight translation”—had different features than the others, and thus the potential to produce translations that maintain the cohesion, coherence, information structure and illocutionary effects of the source text.

Abstract:Abstract This article examines the aesthetic and economic forms of judgment that guided the Japanese literature translation program at the American publisher Alfred A. Knopf Inc. in the 1950s—1970s. During these years, the editor Harold Strauss coordinated Knopf’s ambitious translation program that made dozens of recently written Japanese novels available in English to an American audience. This article provides a fresh perspective on Knopf’s well-known Japanese literature translation program by understanding it to be an illuminating case study that reveals how the practical business of cultural commerce mixes aesthetic and economic modes of valuation, producing provocative connections that link what might otherwise seem to be the antagonistic realms of art and the market. Guided by documents held in the Knopf corporate archive, the article shows how the aesthetics of modern Japanese literature and the economics of publishing each encountered the other in the transactional territory of translation.

Abstract:Early modem novels configuring modernity are established on the basis of the motif of ethical self-confession between double-domed male hero and another male intellectual. The literary ethical device of self-confession is created by male intellectuals and emerged through the interaction between the male characters. Modem Japanese literature has thus created the standard method of the modem novel as it expresses the modern individual's ethical sense. of guilt or ethical inner conflicts through confession. In this respect, it is not unconvincing to say that the new modem state as well as the individual has builtthe ethical order which form the background of the birth of modem Japanese literature. This paper will not only examine the literary ethics implicit in the device of confession, but also provide an alternative approach to the history of modem Japanese literature by adopting Nie Zhenzhao's Method of "ethical literary criticism."

Abstract:As one of the pivot figures of “Northeastern Writers”, Xiao Jun’s Village in August is of great importance in the history of modern Chinese literature, highlighting the local characteristics of Northeastern China, the revolutionary “banditry”, and the romantic personal heroism, attracting the attention of Chinese and Western critics. The translation by American sinology researcher Evan King shows attention to Chinese stories and makes a unique contribution to the cultural exchange between China and the West. His translation is noteworthy, but given the differences in cultural contexts between the two countries and the subjectivity of the translator, it is inevitably full of adaptation and mistranslation. Therefore, it is necessary to make a comprehensive examination of the literary style of the original work, and then propose handy translation strategies and principles for the new era: under the translation principle of truthfulness and accuracy, when translating Chinese culture, it is better to integrate both the foreignisation and domestication; when it comes to local culture, it is appropriate to apply various means to compensate for the cultural default given the specific situation and keep fidelity to the original text in the translation of the novel’s literary characteristics.

Abstract:The current paper presents the intricacy of the novel "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro. This work is a complex combination of themes such as memory, identity, love, loss, and the ethical impacts of scientific progress via cloning. A thorough evaluation of Ishiguro's use of narrative tools, like first-person narrative, non-linear stories, and emotional distance, will show how such methods intensify the thematic import of the novel and give it a philosophical orientation. The narrative analysis focuses on the Hailsham educational system, social control techniques and the attempt by clones to define themselves despite the limited choices they can make. Comparing with other such books, the paper locates Ishiguro's novel in a bigger literary context, highlighting its relevance in the discussions about human nature, ethics, and the risks associated with scientific advances. The last part reveals the novel's powerful take on how to treasure life, look into human relationships, and fight as humans to find a sense of purpose and meaning, even amid loss and fate.
No translator is an island: the changing dynamics of Murakami Haruki translations around the world

Abstract:Tim Parks has included Haruki Murakami among the group of authors writing 'dull global novels', a perception that is in part the result of an exclusive focus on English-language translations of Murakami. By turning attention to translations in other languages, this essay reveals a more nuanced and complex picture, showing that depending on where and by whom he is translated, Murakami in fact emerges differently than in English, and arguing that his writing is perhaps not so 'dull', after all. After briefly describing the history of Murakami translations in North America, the essay examines the history of translations in East Asia, using the example of greater China, where the two main translators, Lai Ming Chu (Taiwan) and Lin Shaohua (China), produce strikingly different versions of his writing. The essay then goes on to trace the main patterns of Murakami translation in Europe and into some Middle Eastern languages and Persian. In Europe there is a gradual shift away from indirect translations through English toward direct translations from the Japanese, and a greater degree of collaboration among translators. The essay analyzes the effects of these changes, offering a few examples from Murakami's latest novels.

Abstract:This paper will consider the 1887 Japanese translation of Apuleius' Golden Ass from the angle of classical reception. Although this was the first translation of Greco-Roman literature to appear in modern Japanese, it has, at least in print, never been examined by a classicist before. With the rising interest in the study of classical receptions, including those taking place outside the West, the time may be ripe for a serious look at this early Meiji translation by Morita Shiken—its content, source, intellectual climate surrounding its production, and its own subsequent reception in Japan. The ancient novel, as Whitmarsh observes, is a genre uniquely suited for reception studies, especially of the more usual kind that is concerned with the modern period. Although a late and ignoble genre within antiquity, despite its often considerable linguistic and literary artistry, it came to enjoy relatively wide cultural recognition and circulation in the early modern period, before being outshone by the modern Western novel and sinking back into relative obscurity again both in the public and in academia—and its literary character is still very much controversial, to the extent that it is debated whether the ancient genre may justifiably be called ‘novel’. The history of the reception of the novel therefore may show more intriguing twists and contradictions than that of such established and uncontroversially ‘great’ genres as epic or tragedy.
A PARALLEL CORPUS OF JAPANESE-RUSSIAN TRANSLATION OF A MANGA

Abstract:After the collapse of the Soviet Union, there was a strong influx of foreign culture into Russia. As part of the influx, Japanese manga entered the former Soviet Union, including Russia. The purpose of this paper is to present a parallel corpus of Japanese manga text Hadashi no Gen (Barefoot Gen), which was familiar to people in the former Soviet Union, and its Russian translation. The author has been studying the translation of Japanese literature and manga works into Russian from the standpoint of Descriptive translation studies, with the question, “How are Japanese literature, manga, and anime works translated into Russian?” As part of this research, the author has created a parallel corpus of Hadashi no Gen. The use of corpora is important to objectively clarify norms and laws of translation. This paper introduces the current state of Japanese manga translation studies and corpus-based translation studies, and then presents the parallel corpus of Hadashi no Gen. The author lays out three texts: the Japanese original text, the old Russian translation text, and the new Russian translation text. Finally, a case study using the corpus was presented. The present researcher showed how many times the name “Gen,” the main character of Hadashi no Gen, appears in the Japanese original text, the old Russian translation text, and the new Russian translation text, and what translation strategies were used. The results of the survey revealed that in the old Russian translation, the name Gen was removed due to page omissions, while in the new Russian translation, Gen which appeared as a vocative in the Japanese text was removed. In the case of the former translation, the name Gen was probably deleted for editorial reasons, but in the case of the latter, the name Gen was probably deleted to make the text more natural as Russian. This new edition would have been translated with the aim of providing a more readable text for Russians.

Abstract:As two major English translations of a famous sixteenth-century Chinese novel The Journey to the West, Monkey by Arthur Waley and The Monkey and the Monk by Anthony Yu differ in many respects due to the translators’ different concerns and translation strategies. Whereas Waley’s translation omits many episodes and significantly changes textual features of the original novel, Yu’s translation is more literal and faithful to the original. Through a comparison of the different approaches in these two translations, this paper aims to delineate important differences in textual features and images of protagonists and demonstrate how such differences, especially the changing representation of Tripitaka, might affect English-language readers’ understanding of religious references and themes in the story. It also seeks to help us reconsider the relationship between translations and the original text in the age of world literature through a case study of English translations of The Journey to the West .

It makes a systematic study on the dynamics and effects of the " semantic change" and " values change" embodied in this Chinese translation to point out Lu Xun's discourse strategy of taking constructing Chinese literature as its target of translation.

Abstract:The concentration of structure and language is the distinctive feature of Hard Times,which for the earlier critics of the book is a regrettable defect but an admirable strength for one of its Chinese translators Wu Guangjian.Be it a defect or strength,they are both misunderstandings.By the image system,Hard Times affects us as a symbolic poetic work which is constructed to criticize the hard philosophy of Utilitarianism.And with a cluster of key images,Dickens expresses his disappointment and concern with the inhumanities of Victorian civilization.By leaving out most of the images of the original to fit into the mode of ancient Chinese novel,Lao Ku Shi Jie has transformed the poetic work into a prosaic story.A close study of this translation will help us understand the design and function of the symbolic image system of the original from a new perspective.

Abstract:The translator is the subject of translation, serving as a medium for cultural exchange and communication. However, translators in the external dissemination of Chinese culture have long been neglected and marginalized. With the “cultural turn” in translation studies, translators have gained due attention. As one of the representative works of Confucianism, Mencius is an important part of traditional Chinese culture, but its foreign translation is later than the Analects of Confucius and other classics, which also reflects the problem of scholars’ insufficient investment in its research. This paper makes a comparative analysis of how the English translation of the core concepts of Mencius by James Legge, Derk Bodde and D.C. LAU reflects the translator’s subjectivity, and in turn how the translator’s subjectivity affects their translation strategy, in order to make a contribution to the foreign translation of classics.

Abstract:In 1890–1, after a lacuna of almost two hundred years, The Tale of Genji was reprinted three times. Two more movable type editions of Genji followed in 1903–6 and 1909–10. The present essay is an attempt to account for this spate of new editions and to explain why scholars of Japanese literature suddenly decided to expend so much energy editing, explicating and otherwise endeavouring to rescue Genji from obscurity. They believed that The Tale of Genji was the epitome of Japan's ‘true national character'; that an appreciation of Genji was vital to the forging of a strong national identity; and, therefore, that Genji was a book ‘every citizen ought to read’. Yet, despite numerous attempts on the part of scholars to disseminate the text of the classic and aids to its understanding to the Meiji citizenry, it was Yosano Akiko's modern Japanese translation of The Tale of Genji, published in 1912–13, that was the first successful transformation of the entire work into an accessible form.

Abstract:This article surveys the available English translations of contemporary Chinese literature from the People's Republic. In view of the post-Mao Party policy of relative freedom for creative writing, more works are pouring out of China than ever before. Of the most recent translations, the largest share belongs to Panda Books, a publishing subunit of the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing. Under the leadership of the Yangs (Xianyi and Gladys), a husband-and-wife team of great renown, this new Panda series has published more than a dozen titles as of 1984, and new ones continue to be received. Despite its voluminous production, the editors of the Panda series have made certain choices that are of dubious value. Especially weak is the representation of traditional literary works, which are often drastically abridged or collected in slender anthologies. In comparison, coverage of modern and contemporary works is more exciting. The translations are generally correct, the most felicitous from the hands of Gladys Yang. However, the translations suffer from a certain uniformity of style and sometimes from severe cuts. Volumes in the series are nevertheless a useful addition to the increasing library of English translations of contemporary Chinese literature, now more than adequate for an undergraduate course.

Abstract:Self-translation is a particular translation phenomenon. A self-translator may have a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of the original text than other translators. Translation is not simply the process of language transformation, but also a process of aesthetic representation with proper aesthetic creation by the translator from the original poems to the target ones. As a well-known writer and translator, Yu’s self-translated poem collection The Night Watchman shows his translation competence, and profound translation thoughts. Based on the theory of translation aesthetics, this research is going to discuss self-translation, and how Yu Kwang-chung reproduces the originals, aesthetic effect in form, sound and imagery, providing a new research angle and material for studies on his translation aesthetic thoughts.
