The concept of pattern abandons the extremely philosophical comprehension of realism and anti-realism. It fully affirms the abstraction and objectivity of mathematics. Based on the concept of patterned mathematical ontology, mathematics includes instrumental character and cultural character. Mathematics penetrates in every branch of science, and provides the necessary instrument for them. It is the incarnation of the rational spirit, and profoundly affects the cultivation of people’s concepts, spirit and way of thinking.

Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:This text summarizes and expands the content of a general audience talk given in 2018 at the University of Mainz. Motivated by recent developments in dependent type theory and infinity category theory, it presents a history of ideas around the concepts of truth, proof, equality, and equivalence as well as their relation to human thought. We describe a few selected ideas of Platon, Aristoteles, Leibniz, Kant, Frege and others and then pass to the results of Gödel and Tarski about incompleteness, undecidability and truth in deductive systems and their semantic models. The main focus of this text, however, is the development of dependent type theory through the work of Per Martin--Löf and recent developments in homotopy type theory, i.e., the univalent foundations program of Vladimir Voevodsky and others. These theories allow the notion of identity types, which gives new possibilities for handling equality, symmetry, equivalence and isomorphisms in a conceptual way. Martin--Löf type theories have semantic models in (infinity,1)-categories, which are related to simplicial localizations of Quillen model categories. The interaction of type theory with infinity category theory is a new paradigm for a structural view on mathematics which is superior to set theory. It also supports the recent emerging trend for computer assisted proofs in mathematics and verification of algorithms and software in computer science.

Their hyperbolic polygons show a considerable singularity/cusp structure that our modern age of computers is able to capture. Henri Poincaré would have been happy to see it.

Abstract:In relation to a thesis put forward by Marx Wartofsky, we seek to show that a historiography of mathematics requires an analysis of the ontology of the part of mathematics under scrutiny. Following Ian Hacking, we point out that in the history of mathematics the amount of contingency is larger than is usually thought. As a case study, we analyze the historians' approach to interpreting James Gregory's expression ultimate terms in his paper attempting to prove the irrationality of pi. Here Gregory referred to the last or ultimate terms of a series. More broadly, we analyze the following questions: which modern framework is more appropriate for interpreting the procedures at work in texts from the early history of infinitesimal analysis? as well as the related question: what is a logical theory that is close to something early modern mathematicians could have used when studying infinite series and quadrature problems? We argue that what has been routinely viewed from the viewpoint of classical analysis as an example of an "unrigorous" practice, in fact finds close procedural proxies in modern infinitesimal theories. We analyze a mix of social and religious reasons that had led to the suppression of both the religious order of Gregory's teacher degli Angeli, and Gregory's books at Venice, in the late 1660s.

Here we analyze the essence of mathematics making the main emphasis on mathematics as an advanced system of knowledge. This knowledge consists of structures and represents structures, existence of which depends on observers in a nonstandard way. Structural nature of mathematics explains its reasonable effectiveness.

Abstract:The paper investigates the notions of number, extensive quantity, algebraic quantity, similarity, and probability as introduced in Wolff’s mathematical writings, and evaluates the coherence of these definitions with Wolff’s presentation of the mathematical method. Wolff’s original epistemology is based on the belief that the discussion on the foundation of mathematics and on the history of mathematical ideas is essential not only to pure mathematics but also to its application and teaching. Mathematics is integrated into a larger body of knowledge and subordinated to philosophy, which explains the impurity of definitions and proofs and why certain notions, such as that of similarity and probability, cannot be understood without reference to ontology and logic. Wolff’s investigation of probable propositions allowed for a unique demonstrative methodology applied to philosophical, mathematical, and historical knowledge, because he described probable reasoning as an insufficient knowledge of the requisites for the truth of the premises. This explains the importance assigned to the right order of concepts and the inferential role of definitions. The paper shows the internal coherence between Wolff’s choice of mathematical definitions and his overall epistemology, and underlines the heritage of Descartes, of Barrow’s edition of Euclid’s Elements and of Aristotle’s notion of contiguity rather than the influence exerted by Leibniz’s mathematics or by Newton’s fluxional conception of geometrical quantities.

Abstract:David Hilbert’s early foundational views, especially those corresponding to the 1890s, are analysed here. I consider strong evidence for the fact that Hilbert was a logicist at that time, following upon Dedekind’s footsteps in his understanding of pure mathematics. This insight makes it possible to throw new light on the evolution of Hilbert’s foundational ideas, including his early contributions to the foundations of geometry and the real number system. The context of Dedekind-style logicism makes it possible to offer a new analysis of the emergence of Hilbert’s famous ideas on mathematical existence, now seen as a revision of basic principles of the “naive logic” of sets. At the same time, careful scrutiny of his published and unpublished work around the turn of the century uncovers deep differences between his ideas about consistency proofs before and after 1904. Along the way, we cover topics such as the role of sets and of the dichotomic conception of set theory in Hilbert’s early axiomatics, and offer detailed analyses of Hilbert’s paradox and of his completeness axiom (Vollständigkeitsaxiom).

Indian (and of Indian origin) mathematicians have continued to do seminal work till present times, culminating in Manjul Bhargava receiving the Fields Medal last year. Abstract:This chapter is an attempt to show how mathematical thought has changed in the last two centuries. In fact, with the discovery of the so-called non-Euclidean Geometries, mathematical thinking changed profoundly. With the negation of the postulate for “antonomasia,” that is the uniqueness of the parallel for Euclid, and the construction of a geometric theory equally valid on the logical and coherence plane, called non-Euclidean geometry, the meaning of the word “postulate” or “axiom” changes radically. The axioms of a theory do not necessarily have to be dictated by real evidence. On this basis the constructions of arithmetic and geometry are built. The axiomatic-deductive method becomes the mathematical method. It will also highlight the constant link between mathematics and the reality that surrounds us, which tends to make itself explicit through an artificial, abstract language and with clear and certain grammatical rules. Finally, you will notice the connection with the existing technology, that is the new electronic and digital technology.

Nowadays, philosophy has to face with the growing, exponential ramified tree of speculative mathematical thinking. Our main (problematical) theses are: 1. In mathematics, there is no empirical automatism, and no separate, physical-like motricity. 2: The irreversible-synthetical must force to complexify the exegetical game of philosophy; numerical experiments in algebra and in number theory are a kind of letting blow up all possible problems; 4. Abstract:Many mathematicians have a rich internal world of mental imagery. Using elementary mathematical skills, this study probes the mathematical imagination's sensorimotor foundations. Mental imagery is perturbed using body position: having the head and vestibular system in different positions with respect to gravity. No two mathematicians described the same imagery. Eight out of 11 habitually visualize, one uses sensorimotor imagery, and two do not habitually used mental imagery. Imagery was both intentional and partly autonomous. For example, coordinate planes rotated, drifted, wobbled, or slid down from vertical to horizontal. Parabolae slid into place or, on one side, a parabola arm reached upward in gravity. The sensorimotor foundation of imagery was evidenced in several ways. The imagery was placed with respect to the body. Further, the imagery had a variety of relationships to the body, such as the body being the coordinate system or the coordinate system being placed in front of the eyes for easy viewing by the mind's eye. The mind's eye, mind's arm, and awareness almost always obeyed the geometry of the real eye and arm. The imagery and body behaved as a dyad, so that the imagery moved or placed itself for the convenience of the mind's eye or arm, which in turn moved to follow the imagery. With eyes closed, participants created a peripersonal imagery space, along with the peripersonal space of the unseen environment. Although mathematics is fundamentally abstract, imagery was sometimes concrete or used a concrete substrate or was placed to avoid being inside concrete objects, such as furniture. Mathematicians varied in the numbers of components of mental imagery and the ways they interacted. The autonomy of the imagery was sometimes of mathematical interest, suggesting that the interaction of imagery habits and autonomy can be a source of mathematical creativity.

Abstract:An introductory section discusses the utility of the algorithm concept in the historiographic analysis of non-recent mathematics, in particular the sense that can be given to claims that a particular mathematical culture was of algorithmic type. It concludes that the adequacy of this epithet when applied to a mathematical culture does not depend on whether texts used in teaching are built up around paradigmatic examples but on whether the production of rules or algorithms was regarded as a central activity for those whom we would count as "mathematicians" (that is, producers of mathematical knowledge). Three medieval examples of attitudes to algorithms follow. First, Jordanus de Nemore's De numeris datis is shown to develop a method to combine algorithms and deductivity, in an alternative to algebra. Second, Barthelemy de Romans' graphic schemes for organizing the complex algorithms used to solve the sophisticated variants of the problem of the "unknown heritage" are discussed. Third is considered Nicholas Chuquet's dismissal of these schemes and algorithms, in favour of the algebraic tool.

Abstract:Mathematical experimental sciences are the main elements of modern science. One of the meta-physical foundation of modern mathematical experimental sciences is pictorialization of world. The pictorial-ization of world comes from the subjective will of human being. The pictorialization of world included math-ematization, spatialization, temporalization and mechanicalization. The movement of mathematization of na-ture changed the Aristotlean physics into new mathematical physics and connected the Greek physics and mathematics. Copernican Revolution made the transmission from closed world to infinite universe. Galileo and Descartes realized mathematization of Space. Newton's absolute space became the base of modern phys-ics. The temporalized world picture of modern time was made by Christian Universalist’ s idea of one di-mension linear time, the development of technology of mechanical clock, the mathematization of time in the Scientific Revolution, as well as the emergence of idea of efficiency in Industrial Revolution. The idea of Creation and technological revolution in late medieval helped to materialize the view of nature based on me-chanical analogy. Newtonian mechanics is the model of modern science.

Abstract:My purpose is to examine some concepts of mathematical logic, which have been studied by Carlo Cellucci. Today the aim of classical mathematical logic is not to guarantee the certainty of mathematics, but I will argue that logic can help us to explain mathematical activity; the point is to discuss what and in which sense logic can "explain". For example, let's consider the basic concept of an axiomatic system: an axiomatic system can be very useful to organize, to present, and to clarify mathematical knowledge. And, more importantly, logic is a science with its own results: so, axiomatic systems are interesting also because we know several revealing theorems about them. Similarly, I will discuss other topics such as mathematical definitions, and some relationships between mathematical logic and computer science. I will also consider these subjects from an educational point of view: can logical concepts be useful in teaching and learning elementary mathematics?
