Abstract:Electrospinning is a simple and easy method for preparing nanowire fibres. The diameter of nanowires prepared by this method can be controlled between tens of nanometres and several micrometres. This paper introduces the basic principle and device for preparing nanofibres by electrospinning, and nanofibres with different structures such as solid core, hollow core, porous and ribbon, which are prepared by using electrospinning technology. The related achievements and research progress of luminescent nanofibres and optically polarised nanofibres prepared by electrostatic spinning technology, and the potential applications of such optically functional nanofibres are discussed. In order to further verify the transmission characteristics of light in nanowires, the theoretical simulations of light scattering in nanowire cross sections and nanowire propagation are performed in this paper. The results show that the scattering effect of the laser dye inside the nanowires has little effect on the random laser light; the doped particles have a greater effect on the light in the nanowires; as the diameter of the nanowires increases, the mode of light that can be transmitted gradually increases. Due to the scattering effect of doped nanoparticles, light can be transmitted in nanowires with small diameters; the introduction of surface modification enables light to propagate in irregular curved surfaces and generate many local modes. The simulation results further prove that the number of modes of light that can be transmitted is determined by the diameter of the nanowire, and from the perspective of simulation, it is explained that the scattering enhancement is the reason for the random laser generated by the small diameter nanowire.

Abstract:<p>Electrospinning, considered as a low-cost and straightforward approach, attracts tremendous attention because nanofibrous materials with functional properties prepared by it can be widely applied in numerous fields, including rechargeable batteries, filtration, and distillation. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the latest advances in developing this unique technique, which starts with a brief introduction of the advantages of electrospinning and highlights ongoing research activities, followed by its principles and progress. Afterward, the corresponding properties of electrospun nanofibers are discussed. A future vision regarding challenges and perspectives in this area is proposed at the end. It is believed that this review would provide an extensive and comprehensive reference to utilize this advanced technique to generate novel nanofibers performing in high demanding areas.</p>

Abstract:Electrospinning provides a simple and versatile method for generating ultrathin fibers from a rich variety of materials that include polymers, composites, and ceramics. This article presents an overview of this technique, with focus on progress achieved in the last three years. After a brief description of the setups for electrospinning, we choose to concentrate on the mechanisms and theoretical models that have been developed for electrospinning, as well as the ability to control the diameter, morphology, composition, secondary structure, and spatial alignment of electrospun nanofibers. In addition, we highlight some potential applications associated with the remarkable features of electrospun nanofibers. Our discussion is concluded with some personal perspectives on the future directions in which this wonderful technique could be pursued. Current research activities on the electrospinning of nanofibers (see Figure, right) are comprehensively reviewed. After a brief discussion of setups (see Figure, left), the mechanisms and theoretical models for electrospinning are presented, followed by approaches for controlling the diameter, morphology, composition, secondary structure, and spatial alignment. Some potential applications of the remarkable features of electrospun fibers are also highlighted.

Abstract:Electrospinning (e-spinning) is famous for the construction and production of ultrafine and continuous micro-/nanofibers. Then, the alignment of electrospun (e-spun) nanofibers becomes one of the most valuable research topics. Because aligned fibers have more advantages over random fibers, such as better mechanical properties, faster charge transport, more regular spatial structure, etc. This review summarizes various electrospinning techniques of fabricating aligned e-spun nanofibers, such as early conventional methods, near-field e-spinning, and three-dimensional (3D) printing e-spinning. Among them, four auxiliary preparation methods (e.g., auxiliary solid template, auxiliary liquid, auxiliary electromagnetic field and auxiliary airflow), two collection modes (static and dynamic collection), and the controllability of near-field e-spinning and 3D printing e-spinning are highlighted. The representative applications depending on aligned nanofibers are classified and briefly introduced, emphasizing in the fields of 1D applications (e.g., field-effect transistor, nanochannel and guidance carrier), 2D applications (e.g., platform for gas detection, filter, and electrode materials storage), and 3D applications (e.g., bioengineering, supercapacitor, and nanogenerator). At last, the challenges and prospects are addressed.

Abstract:Background: Photoluminescent materials have been used for diverse applications in the fields of science and engineering, such as optical storage, biological labeling, noninvasive imaging, solid-state lasers, light-emitting diodes, theranostics/theragnostics, up-conversion lasers, solar cells, spectrum modifiers, photodynamic therapy remote controllers, optical waveguide amplifiers and temperature sensors. Nanosized luminescent materials could be ideal candidates in these applications. Objective: This review is to present a brief overview of photoluminescent nanofibers obtained through electrospinning and their emission characteristics. Methods: To prepare bulk-scale nanosized materials efficiently and cost-effectively, electrospinning is a widely used technique. By the electrospinning method, a sufficiently high direct-current voltage is applied to a polymer solution or melt; and at a certain critical point when the electrostatic force overcomes the surface tension, the droplet is stretched to form nanofibers. Polymer solutions or melts with a high degree of molecular cohesion due to intermolecular interactions are the feedstock. Subsequent calcination in air or specific gas may be required to remove the organic elements to obtain the desired composition. Results: The luminescent nanofibers are classified based on the composition, structure, and synthesis material. The photoluminescent emission characteristics of the nanofibers reveal intriguing features such as polarized emission, energy transfer, fluorescent quenching, and sensing. An overview of the process, controlling parameters and techniques associated with electrospinning of organic, inorganic and composite nanofibers are discussed in detail. The scope and potential applications of these luminescent fibers also conversed. Conclusion: The electrospinning process is a matured technique to produce nanofibers on a large scale. Organic nanofibers have exhibited superior fluorescent emissions for waveguides, LEDs and lasing devices, and inorganic nanofibers for high-end sensors, scintillators, and catalysts. Multifunctionalities can be achieved for photovoltaics, sensing, drug delivery, magnetism, catalysis, and so on. The potential of these nanofibers can be extended but not limited to smart clothing, tissue engineering, energy harvesting, energy storage, communication, safe data storage, etc. and it is anticipated that in the near future, luminescent nanofibers will find many more applications in diverse scientific disciplines.

Abstract:Electrospinning is a versatile and viable technique for generating ultrathin fibers. Remarkable progress has been made with regard to the development of electrospinning methods and engineering of electrospun nanofibers to suit or enable various applications. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of electrospinning, including the principle, methods, materials, and applications. We begin with a brief introduction to the early history of electrospinning, followed by discussion of its principle and typical apparatus. We then discuss its renaissance over the past two decades as a powerful technology for the production of nanofibers with diversified compositions, structures, and properties. Afterward, we discuss the applications of electrospun nanofibers, including their use as "smart" mats, filtration membranes, catalytic supports, energy harvesting/conversion/storage components, and photonic and electronic devices, as well as biomedical scaffolds. We highlight the most relevant and recent advances related to the applications of electrospun nanofibers by focusing on the most representative examples. We also offer perspectives on the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development. At the end, we discuss approaches to the scale-up production of electrospun nanofibers and briefly discuss various types of commercial products based on electrospun nanofibers that have found widespread use in our everyday life.

Abstract:Since 2006, a rapid development has been achieved in a subject area, so called electro-spinning/netting (ESN), which comprises the conventional electrospinning process and a unique electro-netting process. Electro-netting overcomes the bottleneck problem of electrospinning technique and provides a versatile method for generating spider-web-like nano-nets with ultrafine fiber diameter less than 20nm. Nano-nets, supported by the conventional electrospun nanofibers in the nano-fiber/nets (NFN) membranes, exhibit numerious attractive characteristics such as extremely small diameter, high porosity, and Steiner tree network geometry, which make NFN membranes optimal candidates for many significant applications. The progress made during the last few years in the field of ESN is highlighted in this review, with particular emphasis on results obtained in the author’s research units. After a brief description of the development of the electrospinning and ESN techniques, several fundamental properties of NFN nanomaterials are addressed. Subsequently, the used polymers and the state-of-the-art strategies for the controllable fabrication of NFN membranes are highlighted in terms of the ESN process. Additionally, we highlight some potential applications associated with the remarkable features of NFN nanostructure. Our discussion is concluded with some personal perspectives on the future development in which this wonderful technique could be pursued.

Abstract:Electrospinning has attracted great interest from researchers as an effective and versatile method for producing nanofibers. This interest stems from the pronounced advantages of the technology in producing nanomaterials, which are characterized by diverse and sophisticated micro/nanostructures, together with their multiple functions. The wide-ranging applicability of electrospinning polymer nanofiber membranes is attributed to their high porosity, excellent flexibility, and adjustable wettability. This review provides an overview of the recent progress in electrospinning polymer nanofiber membranes, including the fundamental principles of electrospinning, techniques for structural manipulation, strategies for membrane modification, and their high-efficiency applications. The review concludes with an emphasis on the current challenges in nanofiber development, potential enhancement for electrospinning techniques, and the promising outlook for the field.

Abstract:Nanofibres can be fabricated by various methods and perhaps electrospinning is the most facile route. In past years, electrospinning has been used as a synthesis technique and the fibres have been prepared from a variety of starting materials and show various properties. Recently, incorporating functional nanoparticles (NPs) with electrospun fibres has emerged as one of most exciting research topics in the field of electrospinning. When NPs are incorporated, on the one hand the NPs endow the electrospun fibres/mats novel or better performance, on the other hand the electrospun fibres/mats could preserve the NPs from corrosion and/or oxidation, especially for NPs with anisotropic structures. More importantly, electrospinning shows potential applications in self-assembly of nanoscale building blocks for generating new functions, and has some obvious advantages that are not available by other self-assembly methods, i.e., the obtained free-standing hybrid mats are usually flexible and with large area, which is favourable for their commercial applications. In this critical review, we will focus on the fabrication and applications of NPs-electrospun fibre composites and give an overview on this emerging field combining nanoparticles and electrospinning. Firstly, two main strategies for producing NPs-electrospun fibres will be discussed, i.e., one is preparing the NPs-electrospun fibres after electrospinning process that is usually combined with other post-processing methods, and the other is fabricating the composite nanofibres during the electrospinning process. In particular, the NPs in the latter method will be classified and introduced to show the assembling effect of electrospinning on NPs with different anisotropic structures. The subsequent section describes the applications of these NPs-electrospun fibre mats and nanocomposites, and finally a conclusion and perspectives of the future research in this emerging field is given.

Abstract:Abstract Nanofibers have attracted extensive attention and been applied in various fields due to their high aspect ratio, high specific surface area, flexibility, structural abundance, etc. The electrospinning method is one of the most promising and effective ways to produce nanofibers. The electrospun nanofibers-based films and membranes have already been demonstrated to possess small pore sizes, larges specific surface area, and can be grafted with different functionalities to adapt to various purposes. The environmental applications of nanofibers are one of the essential application fields, and great achievements have been made in this field. To well summarize the development of nanofibers and their environmental applications, we review the nanofiber fabrication methods, advanced fiber structures, and their applications in the field of air filtration, heavy metal removal, and self-cleaning surface. Material modifications are achieved through physical and chemical processes, producing diverse material architectures, from laboratory to industrial scales, for conventional and emerging applications. This Primer explains electrospinning technology, encompassing principles, methodologies, equipment, materials, applications, scalability and optimization. The article begins by elucidating the working principles, providing an overview of electrospinning methods and process parameters at laboratory and industrial scales, and discussing emerging equipment. Abstract:Nanofibers have been the subject of recent intensive research due to their unique properties, especially their large surface-area-to-volume ratio, which is about 1000 times higher than that of a human hair. They also have several other remarkable characteristics, such as flexibility in surface functionality, superior mechanical properties such as stiffness and tensile strength, their capacity to be formed into a variety of shapes, and the fact that they can be produced from a wide range of organic and inorganic polymers and ceramics. These outstanding properties make polymer nanofibers the optimal candidates for providing significant improvements in current technology and for opening the door to novel applications in many research areas. Abstract:Electrostatic spinning as a technique for producing nanoscale fibers has recently attracted increasing attention due to its simplicity, versatility, and loadability. Nanofibers prepared by electrostatic spinning have been widely studied, especially in biomedical applications, because of their high specific surface area, high porosity, easy size control, and easy surface functionalization. Wound healing is a highly complex and dynamic process that is a crucial step in the body's healing process to recover from tissue injury or other forms of damage. Single-component nanofibers are more or less limited in terms of structural properties and do not fully satisfy various needs of the materials. This review aims to provide an in-depth analysis of the literature on the use of electrostatically spun nanofibers to promote wound healing, to overview the infinite possibilities for researchers to tap into their biomedical applications through functional composite modification of nanofibers for advanced and multifunctional materials, and to propose directions and perspectives for future research.

Abstract:With the depletion of fossil fuels and the pollution of environment, it is urgent to develop renewable energy technologies to replace the traditional fossil fuels and satisfy the environmental needs. Nanofiberous materials (NFMs) have been widely used in electrochemical energy storage devices in recent years and considered to be promising candidates to address these critical issues because of their excellent properties, such as extremely large surface area, high length/diameter ratio, good flexibility, high porosity, and multiple functionalities. Electrospinning is a particularly low cost, simple, and versatile method to produce nanofibers from various kinds of materials, and the improved coaxial electrospinning can fabricate nanotubes and core/shell structural nanofibers. This review highlights research into the use of electrospinning to create nanofibers for the applications in energy-related devices, mainly including dye-sensitized solar cells, fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, sodium-ion batteries, and supercapacitors. Additionally, the application of NFMs derived from electrospinning in other areas, such as hydrogen storage and lithium-air batteries, are also discussed. At last, the limitations and future prospects for large-scale applications of NFMs by electrospinning are proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, rare earth complexes have been widely studied for their unique luminescent properties, large Stokes shift, long fluorescence lifetime, and high luminescent quantum efficiency. Due to the small absorption area of lanthanide ions in the ultraviolet region, their absorption of light is weak. To enhance its luminescence, excitation can be improved by coordinating with organic ligands and subsequently transferring energy from the ligand tristate to the coordinating metal ions. Electrospinning is a processing method that combines rare earth complexes with matrix materials easily to obtain fluorescent fiber membranes with high fluorescent efficiency, high porosity, controllable morphology, and stable mechanical properties. In this paper, we summarize the applications of fluorescent nanofibers in detection, as well as in solar cells and beyond. Then, we focused on the luminescence mechanism of rare earth elements and rare earth complexes, and discussed the structure of fluorescent nanofibers based on rare earth complexes. Finally, the future direction and innovation of development of electrospinning fluorescent nanofibers are summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Electrospun nanofibers have become the most promising building blocks for future high-performance electronic devices because of the advantages of larger specific surface area, higher porosity, more flexibility, and stronger mechanical strength over conventional film-based materials. Moreover, along with the properties of ease of fabrication and cost-effectiveness, a broad range of applications based on nanomaterials by electrospinning have sprung up. In this review, we aim to summarize basic principles, influence factors, and advanced methods of electrospinning to produce hundreds of nanofibers with different structures and arrangements. In addition, electrospun nanofiber based electronics composed of both two-terminal and three-terminal devices and their practical applications are discussed in the fields of sensing, storage, and computing, which give rise to the further integration to realize a comprehensive and brain-like system. Last but not least, the emulation of biological synapses through artificial synaptic transistors and additionally optoelectronics in recent years are included as an important step toward the construction of large-scale, multifunctional systems.

Abstract:Electrospinning has been recognized as an efficient technique for the fabrication of polymer nanofibers. Various polymers have been successfully electrospun into ultrafine fibers in recent years mostly in solvent solution and some in melt form. Potential applications based on such fibers specifically their use as reinforcement in nanocomposite development have been realized. In this paper, a comprehensive review is presented on the researches and developments related to electrospun polymer nanofibers including processing, structure and property characterization, applications, and modeling and simulations. Information of those polymers together with their processing conditions for electrospinning of ultrafine fibers has been summarized in the paper. Other issues regarding the technology limitations, research challenges, and future trends are also discussed.
