Interactions of hydrogen peroxide and oxalic acid on ice films

Abstract:The heterogeneous halogen chemistry plays a critical role in the ozone depletion events in the polar boundary layers. Pathways involving the conversion from photochemically active halogens to photochemically inactive halogens are necessary to understand the nature of ozone depletion, but the processes are not fully understood. The study of the effects of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2) and oxalic acid (C 2 H 2 O 4) on the activation and deactivation of halogen compounds on ice surfaces is limited. In this dissertation, we have studied interactions between C 2 H 2 O 4 and ice on the Cu surface; interactions of H 2 O 2 and ice surfaces; and the heterogeneous reaction of H 2 O 2 and HBr and co-adsorption of H 2 O 2 and HCl on ice films. Both reflection-absorption infrared spectrometer (RAIRS) coupled with quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) and a flow reactor coupled with QMS were used in these studies. The …
