Abstract:The paper revisits the concepts of translation model, translation analysis, and translation strategy from an integrated perspective. Translation modeling is reconsidered in terms of a paradigm shift and a distinction between a process-oriented (descriptive) model and an action-oriented (prescriptive) model. Following the discourse and communication translation model, we put forward a “model – analysis – strategy” concept and a “features – difficulties – solutions” concept to reformulate a translation strategy as a flexible, variable and, to a certain extent, individual (but not unique) algorithm. We also introduce the notion of a discursive profile framed on existing discourse-related data in translation.

Abstract:At the present stage of translatology development we witness a collision of two approaches to translation: the text-focused approach and the communicative-functional approach. This paper offers arguments in defense of the communicative-functional approach and proves that this approach is a convenient tool of revealing the intrinsic nature of translation as a human activity. It is instrumental in solving traditional problems of translatology, including the problem of translation quality assessment. Translation quality is assessed in terms of adequacy defined as the conformity of the target text to the translation goal and the purposes of the activities performed by the communication actors.

Abstract:Many translation researchers, scholars and students or trainees have the tendency to use the terms ‘translation strategy’,’ translation technique’ ‘translation method’ and ‘translation procedure’ invariably, and sometimes with varying shades of meaning This paper attempts to define, distinguish and clarify these terms in a bid to give the study of translation the scientific basis it deserves, given that scientific terminology is bound to be clear and unequivocal. Employing the qualitative research method and secondary or documentary sources, the paper provides elaborate explanations of the terms using sourced and invented examples. The paper concludes that the term ‘translation strategy’ should be used strictly to refer to a global or general decision a translator takes before engaging in the translation of any text. Such a general decision could concern the issue of whether the translation would be literal, foreignized or source-text oriented; or whether it would be free, oblique, domesticated or target-text-oriented. On the other hand, the paper conclusively contends that all the other terms, that is to say, ‘translation technique, ‘translation procedure’ and ‘translation method’ should be used to refer to tools or operational measures deployed by the translator in the course of actual translation. In other words, they should be used as mechanisms for effecting general or globalizing translation strategies. Keywords: Translation, Strategy, Translation, Technique, Foreignization, Domestication.

Abstract:In modern linguistics, one of the current topics is the study of the relationships between languages, as one of the main means of transmission of meanings and the socio-cultural reality. Among the many challenges studied by the modern linguistics, an important place is the study of the linguistic aspects of cross-language speech activity, which is called «translation» or «translation activity». It is through the translation, we have access to the systems of meanings of other cultures, which with the help of translators acquire its interpretation. Translation implies a correct and clear rendering of what is expressed in one language by means of another language. Within the field of translation theory, certain notions have been researched from a wide range of perspectives and have been assigned a multitude of labels. Due to the confusing use of concepts and terms, we aim to present and define the most important ones, with which the translation theory operates, such as: translation procedure, translation strategy, translation method, translation technique and translation transformation. Also, in this paper, we discuss the types of translation, its purposes and the difficulties that translators encounter in the process of translation.

Abstract:The article presents a review of the key trends in modern Translation Studies (TS) made after thorough analysis of the most fundamental works written in various fields of TS. The review proves that not only the range of problems within TS is now more diversified, which is related to many changes in the nature of translation activity, but Translation Studies are an interdisciplinary science now and uses data from neighboring disciplines. Specific “turns” have occurred in Translation Studies, and new paradigms of translation investigation have emerged. The most important phenomena in Translation Studies include “cultural turn” and the so called “anthropocentric turn” that has given birth to communicative-functional approach to translation. This approach implies “plunging” into the communicative situation of translation, and its analysis aimed at realizing the goal of translation by the translator/interpreter. It allows a more precise formulation of tasks solved by translators in both traditional types of translation (literary translation, religious translation, interpreting) and relatively new kinds of translation activity (audiovisual translation, localization). The article proves that translation proper is the main element of any activity performed by translators while any translation activity implies cultural adaptation of the text to the perception of the source text audience. The principal feature of Translation Studies is being practice-oriented, and their focus on the study of objective laws of translation activity. It enables translation scholars to understand peculiarities of various types of translation and to realize the essence of translation as a human activity.

Abstract:Modern translation studies which are of descriptive nature mainly presuppose the opportunity of altering the function of the source text in translation, reconstruction of sense and structure in correspondence with the aim of translation. The investigation has been carried out in the framework of the communicativefunctional approach to translation which accounts for the entire spectrum of linguistic and extra linguistic factors influencing translation in the broad sense. This fact proves the relevance of the article. The translations of both narrations intended for the children’s audience exclusively conform to the ideology of the children’s fiction aimed at socialization and attraction of young addressees. It results in the loss of the worldview reflection by the originals and focusing on reproducing their fairy–tale plots. The applied readdressing translation strategy has been implemented by the following tactics: the tactic of relevant information rendering, the tactic of pragmatic adaptation of the source text, the tactic of stylistic features rendering, the tactic of the source text formal and structural features rendering. Common operations for the applied tactics have proved to be as following: search for a variant equivalent, omission, restructuring and compensation. The compensation technique has turned out to be the most universal operation within the applied translation tactics. This fact can be explained by the complex nature of transformations the source text is subjected to, the need to omit, rearrange amounts of information and to preserve the chosen genre along with its adaptation for the potential addressee.

Abstract:News translation generates texts that clearly deviate from what would traditionally be considered faithful and accurate translations of the original. This reality has attracted the attention of the academic world and numerous studies have focused on the analysis and description of the transformations that translated news goes through, showing the different strategies used to adapt the original news stories to the functional and ideological needs of the receiving news company and the new audiences. The sociological implications of this state of affairs are obvious: a significant portion of the news stories circulating on a global scale are translated news which plays a role in moulding the recipients’ opinions, actively influencing the way in which they perceive the world around them. Hence the importance of knowing what mechanisms the media use to translate information, why they use them and with what results. This chapter attempts to provide an overview of the strategies which allow the journalist-translators to reshape the source texts to cater to the needs and interests of the foreign readers and to comply with the target news companies’ ideological stances.

Abstract:The research is focused on the aspect of functional speech adaptation of language interpreters who are gaining practical experience at the initial stage in the sphere of foreign-language military-professional communication and paying special attention to the search for original speech strategies to achieve the targets of the translation process in the most efficient way. The critical objective of the article is to theorize the functional speech adaptation and underscore the need and importance to develop interpreters’ unique creative strategies in the process of their adaptive professional maturation for the due carrying out of normal and special translation tasks under the conditions of operational military activities abroad. A detailed review of the scientific sources is carried out concerning research into definitions of linguistic terms such as: “adaptation,” “speech adaptation,” “speech strategies.” The author’s definition of the core of the term “Functional speech adaptation” is given and its main differences are outlined versus the definitions of the linguistic categories “adaptation” and “pragmatic adaptation” proposed by Russian linguistic theorists earlier. The most effective strategies for interpreting are reviewed, viz.: implementation of an interpreter’s anticipation, a strategy for target text forming from the ground of precision information, and a strategy for source text segmentation into minimal translation cells. The study applies the methods of definitional analysis, comparative analysis of theoretical principles with their generalization, theoretical synthesis of the concepts’ definitions, linguistic description method and linguistic modeling. The results of the conducted research make a significant contribution to studying functional speech adaptation of military interpreters in the implementation of interpreting and translation tasks on the foreign military sub-languages material. Moreover, the results of the study can be used for future research purposes of translation studies, theoretical and applied linguistics.

Abstract:In translation studies, the role of the translator is becoming more and more conspicuous. Despite the fact that translation is a transfer from one language to another, especially a semantic one, the role of the translator is, on no account, a simple proxy of technological communication or a passive transcultural mediator. During recent years, scholars have conducted an array of researches on translation process, from the perspective of linguistics, cognitive psychology, psychological linguistics, etc. As for translation process, it is imperative that the translator take various questions into consideration, such as the characteristics of the target language, the cultural factors of the target language, the perception of the original text, the translator’s habits, etc. The English translation of Yuewei Caotang Biji by Yi Izzy Yu and John Yu Branscum has been conceived of as popular in the English world, and has achieved superb effect of transcultural communication. This translated work’s strategy of translating as editing has substantial effects in its’ success, which renders this book easily available to readers in the target culture.

Research Trends in Modern Linguistics and Literature

Abstract:The present paper examines the ways of achieving adequacy in translation. The aim of the study is to define and describe the options that the different translators choose while rendering the message of the same source text (ST) and to establish the translation adequacy conditions. The translators’ options are considered in terms of the techniques employed to achieve equivalence between the textual micro units of the original and those of the target text (TT). It is argued that the choice of the translation techniques is determined by the global translation strategy which is seen as a translator’s action plan to reach the functional identification between the ST and TT. In the course of translating the corresponding techniques are used by the translators to fit the local strategies which necessitate the specific ways of dealing with translation challenges. In order to identify formal, semantic and communicative features of the translators’ options we set out the specific task of exploring the notions of translation strategy, translation method, translation technique and translation equivalence and define their significance in achieving accuracy and/or transparency of translation and, eventually, the adequacy of translation. The study is based on the descriptive and comparative analyses of four translation cases (TTs). The examination of the English-Ukrainian correlative units intends to indicate the types of equivalents and point out their contribution to the translation adequacy. One of the important findings to emerge from the study is that translation adequacy may be measured against the TT acceptability which is considered on four levels and involves correlations between structural, semantic and pragmatic equivalents. The TT that reaches the first level of acceptability is viewed as the case of low translation adequacy; the TT on the second level of acceptability is seen as the case of near adequate translation; the TT on the third level of acceptability is termed as sufficiently adequate translation; the TT on the forth level of acceptability is defined as the case of complete adequate translation.

Abstract:There is little research available on using translation as a tool to develop students’ translation and communicative competence in foreign language programmes. This paper aims to fill this gap by reporting the results of a localized empirical study, using a functionalist theoretical framework. After a pre-translation source text analysis of three texts with EU topics, data were collected by two methods: a linguistic analysis of the student translations of these texts to identify and analyze the most common translation problems, and semi-structured interviews to explore their individual difficulties. The results show that a functional approach can sensitize students to the relationship between text and context, which can develop their cultural and textual awareness. Since the students’ translation problems stem from various individual difficulties, exploring and analyzing them can provide valuable additional information for the teacher about the translation process.

When translating any work, it is important to preserve the source text in the target language, taking into account the thoughts and positions of the author, without losing the content and meaning, and for this, the translator needs to use a large variety of strategies. Functional Approach to Training Translators for Legal Academic Writings

Abstract:The paper explores problems in translated legal academic writings and discusses solutions for a better quality of translation in legal academic writings by taking translated legal academic papers published on China Legal Science (English Edition) as subjects. There are two fundamental reasons which may account for most problems identified in this study: 1) there are some different linguistic features of English and Chinese that make literal translation unsatisfactory; and 2) there are some personal language habits that result in substandard wordings in terms of academic writing and legal language. This article, while offering suggestions for unified standards of Chinese-to-English translation in legal academic writings, aims to provide a training framework for translators from the perspective of functional approach on the basis of the identified problems. The paper also argues that functional approaches can merit legal translation and has pedagogical implications for translation training.

Abstract:It will not be an exaggeration to say that a contract is a document, which represents one of the most common types of legal texts. A translator dealing with agreements has, among other things, to be skillful in finding correct translation solutions, which suggests identifying and analyzing complicated legal-linguistic phenomena. The survey held was aimed at contributing to the development of analytical skills, essential for rendering this type of legal texts. At the first stage, it involved identifying most common challenges, such as equivalence/non-equivalence of terminology, translation of acronyms/abbreviations and phraseology, use of pronouns and some others. Then the selected fragments were offered for translation to a focus group of 12 participants. The tested skills involved both translation from English into Russian and from Russian into English. The evidence gathered was analyzed from the perspective of translation strategies. To sort out the results the statistical method was applied.Another objective of the study was to determine the educational needs of those who took part in the survey. Being a highly intellectual activity, legal translation suggests awareness in legal, cultural and linguistic fields of the source and target languages. The aim of the questionnaire, offered to the respondents, was to outline the gaps in qualification and/or experience. The results, though predictable, confirmed the necessity of cross-discipline courses, covering wide range of relevant knowledge, skills and competences.

Abstract:"Translation" yesterday (in the 1980s and 1990s) was defined in a certain context. Today, in a more globalized and digitalized world, the concept is changing, becoming more fluid while scholars in TS are becoming more nomadic (in their affiliations, and between disciplines). To avoid as much as possible a terminological inflation in TS and a monolithic and static concept of translation, we must consider the socio-cultural context in which we try not only to define our object of investigation but also to clarify the purpose of our definition(s), considering the wide range of translators and interpreters with different status and working with different e-tools.
