Abstract:
As the world's largest consumer of textiles, China is now facing a rapid increase of textile waste. Understanding consumers' clothing disposal behaviors is instructive to encourage more environmental-friendly recycling practices. Take Nanjing city as an example, a questionnaire was developed and conducted to assess consumers' behaviors with respect to their disposal of obsolete clothing. The results show that the average lifespan of obsolete clothing among Nanjing citizens is 3.75 years, differing by gender, age and income. Clothing is obsoleted mostly due to worn-out conditions, resulting in a longer lifespan than countries like UK. Despite of several alternatives for recycling, most prevailing options consumers choose are throwing away and keeping at residence, which indicates there is much room for improving disposal behaviors. Although online clothing-recycling platform (OCRP) has now emerged as a new channel for disposing of unwanted clothing, less than 10% of respondents deem the OCRP as one of their major channels to handle old clothing. However, further analysis based on an integration of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) indicates that most of consumers have the intention to adopt OCRP. Perceived usefulness (PU) has a significantly positive relationship with consumers' platform adopting intentions. Meanwhile, subjective norm (SN), perceived ease of use (PEOU), and perceived behavioral control (PBC) also play roles in explaining the variance of behavioral intentions towards adopting OCRP successively. According to the results, implications for improving consumers' clothing recycling performances are discussed.
