Abstract:The Cu-catalyzed novel aerobic oxidative esterification reaction of 1,3-diones for the synthesis of α-ketoesters has been developed. This method combines C-C σ-bond cleavage, dioxygen activation and oxidative C-H bond functionalization, as well as provides a practical, neutral, and mild synthetic approach to α-ketoesters which are important units in many biologically active compounds and useful precursors in a variety of functional group transformations. A plausible radical process is proposed on the basis of mechanistic studies.

Abstract:A copper‐catalysed (diacetoxyiodo)benzene‐promoted aerobic esterification reaction of acetoacetamides was developed for the synthesis of oxamates, which are useful precursors in synthetic organic chemistry. This practical and mild synthetic approach proceeded at 25 °C under open‐air conditions and afforded methyl 2‐oxo‐2‐(phenylamino)acetates in good to excellent yields combined with C−C σ‐bond cleavage and formal oxidative C−H bond functionalization. A mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Selective oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones under mild reaction conditions has attracted considerable interest, since alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones can serve as synthetic precursors for various downstream chemical products. The major inherent challenges with this chemical oxidation are chemo- and regio-selectivity as well as environmental concerns, i.e. catalyst recycle, safety and cost. Using atmospheric oxygen as an environmentally friendly oxidant, we found that a metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed with Mn and a tetrazolate ligand (CPF-5) showed good activity and selectivity for the allylic oxidation of olefins to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones. Under the optimized conditions, we could achieve 98% conversion of cyclohexene and 87% selectivity toward cyclohexanone. The combination of a substoichiometric amount of TBHP (tert-butylhydroperoxide) and oxygen not only provides a cost effective oxidation system but significantly enhances the selectivity to alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones, outperforming most reported oxidation methods. This catalytic system is heterogeneous in nature, and CPF-5 could be reused at least five times without a significant decrease in its catalytic activity and selectivity.

Abstract:A FeCl3·6H2O-catalyzed synthesis of β-ketothioesters from the hydrolysis reaction of chain α-oxoketene dithioacetals was carried out. Subsequently, we explored the FeCl3·6H2O-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylation of the synthesized β-ketothioesters with alcohols in CH3CN at 25 °C, affording the desired α-alkylated β-ketothioesters in excellent yields. Wide scope of the substrates, use of inexpensive reagents, high yields under mild reaction conditions are notable features of these reactions.

Abstract:A novel efficient HFIP-catalyzed synthesis of structurally diverse 2,2-difluoro-3-hydroxy-1,4-diketone derivatives from readily available glyoxal monohydrates and difluoroenoxysilanes is described. This convenient protocol is induced by the distinctive fluorine effect of the reactants and the fluoroalcohol catalyst, which represents the first application of fluoroalcohol catalysis in a Mukaiyama aldol reaction.

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:Conventional oxidation processes for alkyl aromatics to ketones employ oxidants that tend to generate harmful byproducts and cause severe equipment corrosion, ultimately creating critical environmental problems. Thus, in this study, a practical, efficient, and green method was developed for the synthesis of aromatic ketones by applying a bis(2-butoxyethyl) ether/O2 system under external catalyst-, additive-, and base-free conditions. This O2-mediated oxidation system can tolerate various functional groups and is suitable for large-scale synthesis. Diverse target ketones were prepared under clean conditions in moderate-to-high yields. The late-stage functionalization of drug derivatives with the corresponding ketones and one-pot sequential chemical conversions to ketone downstream products further broaden the application prospects of this approach.

Abstract:This paper shows a novel oxidative functionalization of α-amino ketones to yield the corresponding α-ketoamides and α-acylimidates. The reaction proceeds via oxygen delivery from water/alcohols in conjunction with an electron acceptor and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP). Mechanistic study indicates that DMAP exhibits a dual function of nucleophilic catalysis and proton abstraction.

Abstract:AbstractA novel copper‐catalyzed, multiple oxidative dehydrogenative functionalization of arylacetaldehydes leading to 2‐oxo‐acetamidine compounds has been developed. This transformation is highly efficient with dissociation of six hydrogens including two sp3 CH and one sp2 CH bond activations. This method not only provides an efficient approach to 2‐oxo‐acetamidine compounds, but also offers a valuable mechanistic insight into this novel copper catalysis.

Abstract:An simple, efficient method for the construction of an array of α-ketoamides has been described from readily available O-benzoyl hydroxylamines and diazo compounds as starting materials by the combined use of CuI as a catalyst and H2O as oxygen source. The mechanism research reveals that the O-benzoyl hydroxylamines serve a dual role as both amine source and oxidant, thereby obviating the need for additional oxidants in the transformation process. This methodology could afford a wider range of products in good to excellent yields for most substrates, and provides a new idea for synthesis of α-ketoamide.

Abstract:A novel FeCl3·6H2O-catalyzed tandem Friedel–Crafts alkylation–hydrolysis reaction between chain α-oxo ketene dithioacetals and alcohols to afford α-alkylated β-oxo thioesters has been successfully developed. The reaction is efficient in the presence of catalyst loading as low as 30 mol% in MeCN at room temperature, and a wide variety of α-alkylated β-oxo thioesters are efficiently synthesized in good yields.

Abstract:An aerobic oxidation of aldehydes towards carboxylic acids in MeCN using 1 atm of pure oxygen or oxygen in air as the oxidant and a catalytic amount of single component catalyst, Fe(NO3)(3)9H(2)O, has been developed. Carboxylic acids with different synthetically useful functional groups were obtained at room temperature. Two mechanistic pathways have been proposed based on isotopic labeling, NMR monitoring, and control experiments. The practicality of this reaction has been demonstrated by conducting several 50 mmol-scale reactions using pure oxygen or an air-flow of similar to 30 mL/min.

Abstract:When molecular oxygen is employed as the oxidant in the Baeyer-Villiger reaction, the addition of an excess amount of sacrificial aldehyde/alcohol to generate peroxyacids or peroxides in situ is the most frequently adopted strategy. In this work, we report a sacrifice-free approach to lactone/esters from ketones using molecular oxygen as the oxidant, in which cerium ammonium nitrate and N-hydroxyphthalimide were utilized as the catalysts with a good tolerance to cyclic and aromatic ketones. Experiments have shown that the presence of alpha-hydrogens in ketone compounds is a critical condition for the reaction, and the H-2 labeling experiments demonstrated that the oxidation is initiated via the deprivation of the alpha-hydrogen of ketone by phthalimide N-oxy radical (PINO), which is significantly different from the Criegee-Intermediate mechanism of traditional BV reaction. And the O-18 labeling experiment suggested that NO3- participates in the oxidation of the carbonyl compounds and NO3- could be regenerated by molecular oxygen. The redox process of cerium and the structure of the catalytic complex were also illustrated by the EPR and XRD characterization. Meanwhile, cerium ammonium nitrate was proved to be capable recycle although its reactivity was decreased after two cycles. The unprecedented mechanism for the synthesis of lactone/ester was hoped to provide a new prospect in the academic study and industrial manufacture.

Abstract:Benzoxazines are important structures in pharmaceuticals and functional molecules. We herein described an electrochemical oxidative strategy for the synthesis of benzoxazines without transition-metal catalysts and external oxidants. In a undivided cell, a series of olefinic amides can be transferred to difluoromethylated benzoxazines in up to 87% yield via oxydifluoromethylation with CF2HSO2Na as the difluoromethylating reagent.

Abstract:α‐Diazoesters belong to significantly important carbenoid precursors in synthetic chemistry. Diazomethylation‐based difunctionalization of alkenes is highly valuable but remain nontrivial. Herein, we reported a general and modular approach for the direct 1,2‐oxydiazomethylation of alkenes through visible‐light photoredox catalysis. This process exploits photocatalyzed strategy to convert alkenes to γ‐formyloxyl‐α‐diazoesters using α‐diazo iodonium salts as carbyne precursors, featuring wide substrate tolerance and broad late‐stage diversifications. Mechanistic studies suggest that the formation of γ‐carbocation‐tethered α‐diazoesters plays a crucial role in trapping DMF and H2O to allow for this transformation.
