Abstract:Recently, semantic segmentation became a pivotal role in autonomous driving systems by recognizing various objects in complex traffic environment. Nevertheless, adverse weather conditions exert a substantial impact on image quality, resulting in reduced accuracy on semantic segmentation. To address this issue, this study presents a two-stage framework aimed at enhancing the semantic segmentation for autonomous vehicles operating under adverse weather conditions. Firstly, a large-scale dataset is collected under various weather scenarios via the CARLA simulator, and then is used to train a Pix2Pix generative adversarial networks to convert camera images captured in different weather conditions into corresponding clear-sky scenes. Subsequently, a Resnet-Unet-based semantic segmentation model is exclusively trained using the clear-sky images. In adverse weather conditions, the Pix2Pix GAN is initially deployed to convert camera images into their respective clear-sky counterparts, which are then subjected to semantic segmentation using the Resnet-Unet network. Experimental results validate the efficacy of the proposed two-stage approach in achieving robust semantic segmentation in adverse weather conditions. Moreover, the images transformed by the Pix2Pix GAN offer interpretable and reliable daytime perspectives for drivers and passengers. This approach presents a promising solution to improve the safety and reliability of autonomous driving systems in challenging weather conditions.
