Abstract:An irrational toric variety X is an analytic subset of the simplex associated to a finite configuration of real vectors. The positive torus acts on X by translation, and we consider limits of sequences of these translations. Our main result identifies all possible Hausdorff limits of translations of X as toric degenerations using elementary methods and the geometry of the secondary fan of the vector configuration. This generalizes work of Garcia-Puente et al., who used algebraic geometry and work of Kapranov, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky, when the vectors were integral.

Abstract:Rationality is not a constructible property in families. In this article, we consider stronger notions of rationality and study their behavior in families of Fano varieties. We first show that being toric is a constructible property in families of Fano varieties. The second main result of this article concerns an intermediate notion that lies between toric and rational varieties, namely cluster type varieties. A cluster type $\mathbb Q$-factorial Fano variety contains an open dense algebraic torus, but the variety does not need to be endowed with a torus action. We prove that, in families of $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal Fano varieties, being of cluster type is a constructible condition. As a consequence, we show that there are finitely many smooth families parametrizing $n$-dimensional smooth cluster type Fano varieties.

Universality for tropical and logarithmic maps

Abstract:We prove that every toric monoid appears in a space of maps from tropical curves to an orthant. It follows that spaces of logarithmic maps to Artin fans exhibit arbitrary toric singularities: a virtual universality theorem for logarithmic maps to pairs. The target rank depends on the chosen singularity: we show that the cone over the 7-gon never appears in a space of maps to a rank 1 target. We obtain similar results for tropical maps to affine space.

Singular Lagrangian torus fibrations on the smoothing of algebraic cones

Abstract:Given a lattice polytope $Q\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, we can consider the cone $\sigma=C(Q)=\{\lambda(q,1)\in \mathbb{R}^{n+1}|\lambda \in \mathbb{R}_{\geq0}, q\in Q\} \subset \mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, and the affine toric variety $Y_{\sigma}$ associated to $\sigma$. Altmann showed that the versal deformation space of $Y_\sigma$ can be described by the Minkowski decomposition of the polytope $Q$. Under some conditions on $Q$, we can obtain a smooth deformation $Y_\epsilon$ of $Y_\sigma$ using Altmann's result. In this article, we consider $Y_\epsilon$ inside some $\mathbb{C}^N$ and construct a complex fibration on $Y_\epsilon$, with general fibre $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$ and finite singular fibres described using global coordinates related to the components of the Minkowski decomposition. We construct a singular Lagrangian torus fibration out of the complex fibration. This singular fibration admits a convex base diagram representation with cuts as a natural generalization of base diagrams described by Symington for Almost Toric Fibrations ($\dim=4$). In particular, we obtain a convex base diagram whose image is the dual cone of $C(Q)$. There is a 1-parameter family of monotone Lagrangian tori in each of these fibrations. Using the wall-crossing formula, we describe the potential associated with this family in terms of the Minkowski decomposition of $Q$, recovering the result of Lau, and discuss non-displaceability. We also discuss some other consequences of our results.

Abstract:Using Cayley trick, we define the notions of mixed toric residues and mixed Hessians associated with $r$ Laurent polynomials $f_1,...,f_r$.We conjecture that the values of mixed toric residues on the mixed Hessians are determined by mixed volumes of the Newton polytopes of $f_1,...,f_r$. Using mixed toric residues, we generalize our Toric Residue Mirror Conjecture to the case of Calabi-Yau complete intersections in Gorenstein toric Fano varieties obtained from nef-partitions of reflexive polytopes.

Locally Trivial Deformations of Toric Varieties

Abstract:We study locally trivial deformations of toric varieties from a combinatorial point of view. For any fan $\Sigma$, we construct a deformation functor $\mathrm{Def}_\Sigma$ by considering Čech zero-cochains on certain simplicial complexes. We show that under appropriate hypotheses, $\mathrm{Def}_\Sigma$ is isomorphic to $\mathrm{Def}'_{X_\Sigma}$, the functor of locally trivial deformations for the toric variety $X_\Sigma$ associated to $\Sigma$. In particular, for any complete toric variety $X$ that is smooth in codimension $2$ and $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial in codimension $3$, there exists a fan $\Sigma$ such that $\mathrm{Def}_\Sigma$ is isomorphic to $\mathrm{Def}_X$, the functor of deformations of $X$. We apply these results to give a new criterion for a smooth complete toric variety to have unobstructed deformations, and to compute formulas for higher order obstructions, generalizing a formula of Ilten and Turo for the cup product. We use the functor $\mathrm{Def}_\Sigma$ to explicitly compute the deformation spaces for a number of toric varieties, and provide examples exhibiting previously unobserved phenomena. In particular, we classify exactly which toric threefolds arising as iterated $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles have unobstructed deformation space.

Logarithmic vector fields and foliations on toric varieties

Abstract:We introduce a toric version of the sheaf of logarithmic vector fields along a divisor of a simplicial toric variety. The notion is also relevant for algebraically independent families of polynomials in the Cox ring. We provide a generalisation of the Saito criterion for the freeness of the toric logarithmic sheaf. We explain the relationship between this sheaf and the usual sheaf of logarithmic vector fields and the connection with holomorphic foliations on toric varieties.

Abstract:<p>Motivated by the study of the secant variety of the Segre-Veronese variety we propose a general framework to analyze properties of the secant varieties of toric embeddings of affine spaces defined by simplicial complexes. We prove that every such secant is toric, which gives a way to use combinatorial tools to study singularities. We focus on the Segre-Veronese variety for which we completely classify their secants that give Gorenstein or <span class="math"><math>Q</math></span>-Gorenstein varieties. We conclude providing the explicit description of the singular locus.</p>

Abstract:We prove a theorem relating torus-equivariant coherent sheaves on toric varieties to polyhedrally-constructible sheaves on a vector space. At the level of K-theory, the theorem recovers Morelli’s description of the K-theory of a smooth projective toric variety (Morelli in Adv. Math. 100(2):154–182, 1993). Specifically, let X be a proper toric variety of dimension n and let $M_{\mathbb{R}} = \mathrm{Lie}(T_{\mathbb{R}}^{\vee})\cong\mathbb {R}^{n}$ be the Lie algebra of the compact dual (real) torus $T_{\mathbb{R}}^{\vee}\cong U(1)^{n}$. Then there is a corresponding conical Lagrangian Λ⊂T ∗ M ℝ and an equivalence of triangulated dg categories $\mathcal{P}\mathrm{erf}_{T}(X) \cong\mathit{Sh}_{cc}(M_{\mathbb{R}};\Lambda)$, where $\mathcal{P}\mathrm{erf}_{T}(X)$ is the triangulated dg category of perfect complexes of torus-equivariant coherent sheaves on X and Sh cc (M ℝ;Λ) is the triangulated dg category of complex of sheaves on M ℝ with compactly supported, constructible cohomology whose singular support lies in Λ. This equivalence is monoidal—it intertwines the tensor product of coherent sheaves on X with the convolution product of constructible sheaves on M ℝ.

Abstract:In this paper, the concepts of binomial difference ideals and toric difference varieties are defined and their properties are proved. Two canonical representations for Laurent binomial difference ideals are given using the reduced Groebner basis of Z[x]-lattices and regular and coherent difference ascending chains, respectively. Criteria for a Laurent binomial difference ideal to be reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, and toric are given in terms of their support lattices which are Z[x]-lattices. The reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of a Laurent binomial difference ideal are shown to be binomial. Four equivalent definitions for toric difference varieties are presented. Finally, algorithms are given to check whether a given Laurent binomial difference ideal I is reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, or toric, and in the negative case, to compute the reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of I. An algorithm is given to decompose a finitely generated perfect binomial difference ideal as the intersection of reflexive prime binomial difference ideals.

Generalized Campana points and adelic approximation on toric varieties

Abstract:We introduce a general framework for studying special subsets of rational points on an algebraic variety, termed $\mathcal{M}$-points. The notion of $\mathcal{M}$-points generalizes the concepts of integral points, Campana points and Darmon points. We introduce and study $M$-approximation over number fields and function fields, which is a notion that generalizes weak and strong approximation. We show that this property implies that the set of $\mathcal{M}$-points is not thin. We then give a simple characterisation of when a split toric variety satisfies $M$-approximation, generalizing work of Nakahara and Streeter. Further, we determine when the set of $\mathcal{M}$-points on a split toric variety is thin.

Motivic distribution of rational curves and twisted products of toric varieties

Abstract:This work concerns asymptotical stabilisation phenomena occurring in the moduli space of sections of certain algebraic families over a smooth projective curve, whenever the generic fibre of the family is a smooth projective Fano variety, or not far from being Fano. We describe the expected behaviour of the class, in a ring of motivic integration, of the moduli space of sections of given numerical class. Up to an adequate normalisation, it should converge, when the class of the sections goes arbitrarily far from the boundary of the dual of the effective cone, to an effective element given by a motivic Euler product. Such a principle can be seen as an analogue for rational curves of the Batyrev-Manin-Peyre principle for rational points. The central tool of this article is the property of equidistribution of curves. We show that this notion does not depend on the choice of a model of the generic fibre, and that equidistribution of curves holds for smooth projective split toric varieties. As an application, we study the Batyrev-Manin-Peyre principle for curves on a certain kind of twisted products.

Abstract:We study certain toric Gorenstein varieties with isolated singularities which are the quotient spaces of generic unimodular representations by the one-dimensional torus, or by the product of the one-dimensional torus with a finite abelian group. Based on the works of Špenko and Van den Bergh [Invent. Math. 210 (2017), no. 1, 3-67] and Mori and Ueyama [Adv. Math. 297 (2016), 54-92], we show that the singularity categories of these varieties admit tilting objects, and hence are triangle equivalent to the perfect categories of some finite dimensional algebras.

Abstract:Let n be an even natural number. We compute the periods of any n 2 -dimensional complete intersection algebraic cycle inside an n-dimensional non-degenerated intersection of a projective simplicial toric variety. Using this information we determine the cycle class of such algebraic cycles. As part of the proof we develop a toric generalization of a classical theorem of Macaulay about complete intersection Artin Gorenstein rings, and we generalize an algebraic cup formula for residue forms due to Carlson and Griffiths to the toric setting.

Abstract:A toric variety is a normal complex variety which is completely described by combinatorial data, namely by a fan of strongly convex rational (with respect to a lattice) cones. Due to this rationality condition, toric varieties are (equivariantly) rigid since a deformation of the lattice can make it dense. A solution to this problem consists in considering quantum toric stacks. The latter is a stacky generalization of toric varieties where the "lattice" is replaced by a finitely generated subgroup of $\mathbb{R}^d$ (in the simplicial case as introduced by L. Katzarkov, E. Lupercio, L. Meersseman and A. Verjovsky). The goal of this paper is to explain the moduli spaces of quantum toric stacks and their compactification.

Abstract:For every complete toric variety, there exists a projective toric variety which is isomorphic to it in codimension one. In this paper, we show that every smooth non-projective complete toric threefold of Picard number at most five becomes projective after a finite succession of flops or anti-flips.

Abstract:In this note we propose the generalization of the notion of a holomorphic contact structure on a manifold (smooth variety) to varieties with rational singularities and prove basic properties of such objects. Natural examples of singular contact varieties come from the theory of nilpotent orbits: every projectivization of the closure of a nilpotent orbit in a semisimple Lie algebra satisfies our definition after normalization. We show the correspondence between symplectic varieties with the structure of a -bundle and the contact ones along with the existence of stratification à la Kaledin. In the projective case we demonstrate the equivalence between crepant and contact resolutions of singularities, show the uniruledness and give a full classification of projective contact varieties in dimension 3.

Laurent polynomial mirrors for quiver flag zero loci

Abstract:The classification of Fano varieties is an important open question, motivated in part by the MMP. Smooth Fano varieties have been classified up to dimension three: one interesting feature of this classification is that they can all be described as certain subvarieties in GIT quotients; in particular, they are all either toric complete intersections (subvarieties of toric varieties) or quiver flag zero loci (subvarieties of quiver flag varieties). There is a program to use mirror symmetry to classify Fano varieties in higher dimensions. Fano varieties are expected to correspond to certain Laurent polynomials under mirror symmetry; given such a Fano toric complete intersections, one can produce a Laurent polynomial via the Hori--Vafa mirror. In this paper, we give a method to find Laurent polynomial mirrors to Fano quiver flag zero loci in $Y$-shaped quiver flag varieties. To do this, we generalise the Gelfand--Cetlin degeneration of type A flag varieties to Fano $Y$-shaped quiver flag varieties, and give a new description of these degenerations as canonical toric quiver varieties. We find conjectural mirrors to 99 four dimensional Fano quiver flag zero loci, and check them up to 20 terms of the period sequence.
