Abstract:abstract The scope and purpose of this special issue is to draw interconnections between domains of strategy and strategic management research. Specifically, we initially conceptualized this special issue with two goals in mind: (1) to highlight and bridge intersections between strategy theories and bodies of scholarship; and (2) to advance and mainstream ways in which an explicit organizational dimension can be fostered in strategy and strategic management research. The papers selected for the issue capture this set of aspirations in various ways, and, as such, they collectively offer a foundation for extending strategy and strategic management research in exciting new directions. We start our introduction by providing a brief overview of the contributions provided by each paper in the context of three broad strategy themes: strategy and process; resources and organizational growth; and environment and institutional context. We subsequently discuss the potential for integration of research across these themes, and highlight the importance of what we define as bridging and umbrella constructs that are able to connect various strategy and organizational phenomena in coherent and meaningful ways. We elaborate the important distinction between these two constructs and their respective roles within theory development, and use that to drive and articulate directions for further research.

Abstract:Effective financial management is critical to the success of any organization. This review paper provides a comprehensive analysis of financial management as a network of interdependent processes that require coordinated action among investors, creditors, and managers. The paper examines the function of financial management within an organization and its role in achieving financial optimization. Drawing on extensive research, the review paper identifies the four pillars of efficient financial management: planning, budgeting, forecasting, and monitoring. It emphasizes the importance of open communication and coordinated action among all parties involved in financial decisions. By closely monitoring financial performance, financial management can guarantee that an organization is making the most of its available resources. The review paper also stresses the significance of strong leadership in financial management. Effective financial management requires skilled managers who can navigate the complex web of financial relationships within an organization. By analyzing key aspects of financial management, the review paper provides valuable insights into how organizations can optimize their financial management processes.

An Overview of Reviews: Organizational Change Management Architecture

Abstract:The current review overview attempts to create order in the overall fragmented scenario regarding output on organizational change management. Grounded on 39 selected reviews out of 113 identified, the manuscript creates a theoretical summary of knowledge and allows change determinants to emerge. Whereas the existing literature refers to a theory or an implementation model and then introduces the analysis of several patchy variables, the proposed organizational change taxonomy refines well-established models by introducing the study of nine thematic groups containing a total of 41 variables. The strategic and behavioral change variables are classified according to the role (antecedent, moderator, mediator, outcome), the direction (positive, negative) and level (micro, meso, macro) of the change phenomenon. This summary clarifying change characteristics and intrinsic complexity suggests directions for future empirical studies and practical tools for managers to design organizational change management architecture with implementation success. MAD statement Since research on change management proceeds at a dizzying pace, it is useful to periodically take stock of the situation on the state of the art. This review provides an updated overview on the current organizational change management scenario. While the manuscript presents a renewed framework, it also suggests a research agenda with new possible ways to further study the field.

Abstract:This book synthesizes a decade of research by the author into fundamental issues in organization design. The result is a novel micro-structural perspective on organizations, which aims to both expand and narrow current thinking. The new perspective takes an expansive view on the kinds of phenomena that can be studied in terms of organization design- such as cross–functional teams, strategic partnerships, buyer-supplier relations, alliance networks, mega-projects, post-merger integration, business groups, open source communities, and crowdsourcing, besides traditional concerns with bureaucratic organizations. At the same time, this approach narrows focus by abstracting away from the variety and complexity of organizations to a few fundamental and universal problems of organizing (that relate to how they aggregate their members’ efforts), as well as a few reusable building blocks microstructures (which capture common patterns of interaction between members of an organization). The microstructural approach to organizations will be of interest to researchers and PhD students in management, organization science, and strategy

Abstract:The resource‐based view is an enduring and impactful mainstay of research within strategic management and beyond. This editors' introduction to the special issue on "new directions for the resource‐based view" accomplishes two main tasks. First, we describe the contributions offered by the seven articles contained in the special issue. Second, we explain the potential value to research of incorporating into resource‐based inquiry new contexts (artificial intelligence and digitization, distributed organizations, and stakeholders and sustainability); new concepts (resource redeployment, market shaping through resources and capabilities); and new methods (text analysis and machine learning, formal models, policy capturing). The overall aim of this introduction is to help invigorate the resource‐based view by spotlighting a series of promising new directions.

Abstract:According to longitudinal study in Australia from 1982 to 1993, strategic planning systems played a significant part in the strategic management efforts of large industrial companies. But strategic planning has changed dramatically since the early 1980s as companies have made their planning systems more flexible, decentralized strategic planning divisions or business units, moved planning responsibility from the employees to managers and changed the function of corporate planning departments. In addition, companies tried to build their corporate culture by focusing more on client orientation and quality management in general. They have increased their global activity while concentrating on core business activities via acquisitions and disposals. The future is expected to increase total quality management and benchmarking, with companies concentrating more on appropriate training and recruitment procedures. As new generations rise to power, leadership and corporate cultures become more and more essential. Digital technologies and artificial intelligence in all its forms will have a major impact on the area of strategy.

Abstract:This research is a literature study that reviews strategies for improving organizational performance through optimizing organizational design. The articles reviewed are articles that discuss organizational design and organizational performance. The review method used is a systematic literature review. The search for articles begins in 2016 – 2022. All articles sought are in English. Based on the search results obtained 988 articles. After the data inclusion and exclusion process was carried out, 18 potential articles were obtained for in-depth analysis. Based on the results of the synthesis carried out, it can be concluded that the role of organizational design is very visible in improving organizational performance. In addition, organizational design encourages the emergence of organizational innovation which ultimately encourages increased organizational performance.

Abstract:Organization design is an established field of research within organization studies, focusing on different organizational forms, the array of the design strategies available to managers and their external and internal contingencies. However, our understanding of the complementary design choices available to managers of project-based organizations is limited. Building on both organization theory and design and project management literature this study identifies design choices available for the design of the project-based organization. Adopting the contingency perspective, it reviews the literature on project-based organizations to explore key factors that influence the design of the project-based organization in comparison with more traditional organizations. The resulting model offers a starting point for further studies on the design of the project-based organization. The study concludes by suggesting a research agenda in light of the results.

Many organizations come remarkably close to one of these forms, while others can be understood as hybrids of them. Nevertheless, since organizations are made up of people, every one of us different, every single organization structure must be customized through a process of design doing.

Abstract:Organization design in its verb form is explored through a study of the design practices of a major contemporary architect, Frank O. Gehry, and his firm, Gehry Partners, LLP. Through four case studies, we explore how the organization design of his architectural projects is an outcome of Gehry Partner’s design gestalt. We argue that this design gestalt is a primary source of their organization designing and is composed of an architectural vision, the tight coupling of multiple representation technologies, and a commitment to a collaborative process of design and construction. These elements of design together form a holistic, organizing pattern—their design gestalt—that is evident in all of Gehry Partners projects, both their buildings and their organizational forms. We offer three characteristics of organization designing—focus on form giving, relation to environment, and temporality. We argue that developing a design gestalt and strengthening the capacity for organization designing is crucial for firms in our increasingly knowledge- and experience-based economy.

Abstract:Self-organization -- a characteristic of complex adaptive systems (CAS) -- has been explored in organizational research, in management theory [Mihm et al. 2003; von Foerster 1984], firm internationalization [Chandra and Wilkinson 2017], organizational design [Clement and Puranam 2017], and strategic change [Foster 2015]. Newer organizational forms such as networks and zero-hierarchy companies that hold the promise of self-organization are gaining prominence [Puranam et al. 2014], and theoretical organizational modeling is a useful technique to study them proactively via simulation [Puranam et al.2015; Simon 1976]. In this paper, we introduce a nature-inspired model to understand self-organization of collaborative groups in three archetypal organizational designs: i. fully-networked, ii. siloed, and iii.dynamic, where each design controls intra-managerial communication in specific ways, and each member has reactive or perceptive behavioral tendencies.

Abstract:Since the business policy tradition began at Harvard Business School, the academic field now known as strategic management has traversed a rather spectacular journey and is increasingly growing to be more diverse in terms of both its content and methodology. In order to help researchers, veterans or novices alike, to better fathom and appreciate such a gigantic literature running the gamut of all strategic research, this paper summarizes and critiques the research contributions since the 1960s based on the broad categories of dominant paradigm, corporate strategy, business strategy, and strategy process and top management team. Given the volume and the richness of the literature, and due to space limitation, it chooses to focus on those important research topics and streams, highlighting especially those milestone achievements and contributions.

Abstract:Strategic organizational innovation is a cornerstone for sustaining competitive advantages and encouraging growth in today's dynamic business landscape. This paper provides a thorough overview and bibliometric analysis of organizational innovation, providing significant insights to both scholars and practitioners using database of SCOPUS and ABDC. This work throws light on prolific authors such as Y. L. Chong and M.A. Vonderembse, highlighting the most influential publications in journals such as the Journal of Product Innovation Management and Technological Forecasting and Social Change. Miller in Management Science 29(7),770-792, 1983, Hurley and Hult in Journal of Marketing, 62(3), 42-54, 1998, and Jansen et al. in Management Science, 52(11), 1661-1674, 2006 emerge as significant pillars with long-term effect, with annual citations demonstrating their perpetual importance. National affiliations highlight the prominence of the USA, followed by the UK and China, while institutions such as Florida State University, University of California, University of Colorado, and University of Warwick make significant contributions. Thematic outlines are defined by keywords such as innovation, knowledge management, and dynamic capabilities, which frequently resonate with conceptual frameworks such as TOE theory and DOI theory. Organizational learning, culture, human capital, technology, top management, and industry dynamics all appear as elements' driving organizational innovation. Common themes of culture, management, learning, market orientation, and human resources constantly fuel innovation across sectors such as education, software, construction, healthcare, and hospitality. The ramifications of this work stretch beyond academics, informing government policies and organizational tactics. A strong appeal to foster innovation-friendly settings resonates powerfully, with decentralization and the promotion of organizational learning as essential components. Finally, our study emphasizes the need of innovation not just as a tool, but as a requirement for firms managing contemporary issues.

Abstract:The dominant market for enterprise resource planning (ERP) vendors has traditionally been the largest of multinational corporations. Until recently, most vendors (SAP, PeopleSoft, Oracle, etc.) have promoted a “one size fits all” solution built on “industry best practices.” This approach forced organizations to either conform to the “best practices” and configurations suggested by vendors and implementation consultants or embark on extremely costly reconfiguration of their ERP package. The study reviews the concepts of control, coordination, and their trade‐offs plus Bartlett and Ghoshal’s topology of firm strategy. Human resource issues are introduced as examples of organization elements that may or may not conform to the enterprise design structure within coordination and control. Finally, the concepts of control and coordination and the Bartlett and Ghoshal topology are combined to create a firm strategic orientation which is then matched to an ideal ERP configuration or enterprise information architecture.

Abstract:<p>Review‐centric works receive increasing attention for generating insightful contributions to management and organization studies. Despite this, the literature on theory building has taken little note of their place in the theorizing process. This deserves attention, however, given the challenges reviews face in theorizing in the absence of new empirical observations. Accordingly, these works run the risk of merely summarizing 'what we have already seen', instead of 'maximizing what we see'. Drawing on the strategies of theorizing from similarities and theorizing from anomalies, we propose dialectical interrogation as a critical step in theorizing through which review scholars imaginatively engage in a back and forth inquiry between the phenomenal world of a given field and existing theory. By analyzing selected review studies from top management journals, we reveal that theorizing outcomes occur through two ways of dialectical interrogation (consolidative and disruptive). We contribute by demonstrating that review scholars can enter into powerful theorizing through the consolidative or disruptive interrogation of the review data with extant theory to detect emergence and novelty alongside puzzles, conflicts and paradoxes. Dialectical interrogation can address the shortcomings of current theorizing in review‐centric works and bears potential for advancing theories of management and organization studies.</p>

Abstract:Design thinking comprises an approach to problem solving that uses tools traditionally utilized by designers of commercial products, processes, and environments (e.g., designing a new car or the layout of a new airport). While design thinking was originally introduced as an approach that would work best when infused into the culture of an organization, most early studies of design thinking focused on identifying the specific tools and methods that might be used to solve management problems. Only recently have researchers examined how the implementation of design thinking might relate to organizational-level constructs, such as organizational culture. In this review, we examine empirical research (mostly from the past decade) that relates the practice of design thinking to the development of culture in organizations. Through this review, we identify how the use of specific design thinking tools supports the development of specific organizational cultures and vice versa. In addition, we identify how using design thinking tools produces emotional experiences and physical artifacts that help users to understand why and how specific cultures support the effective use of specific tools. Together, our review findings suggest that the experiential nature of design thinking tools and cultures (i.e., that they require people to actively engage in hands-on work) allows them to support one another. On the basis of this insight, we develop a general framework for organizing design thinking research and identify a number of avenues for future research that might advance our understanding of design thinking in organizational contexts.

Abstract:This article applies and extends the three‐part organizational framework used in the preceding article to a broad range of management innovations. After furnishing some interesting evidence of the rise and fall of management techniques such as TQM, Reengineering, Just‐in‐Time Production, and Activity‐Based Costing, the authors raise and then attempt to answer a number of questions: What explains the popularity of these management innovations? Why do they often fail to produce the expected benefits? How can managers tell if a particular technique is right for them? What can managers do to increase the likelihood that an adopted technique will be successful? The persistent, and at times seemingly insatiable, corporate demand for management innovations is viewed by the authors as a “rational” economic response by senior managers to major changes in the external business environment—changes that in turn dictate changes in business strategy. For example, when confronted with external changes such as deregulation or heightened global competition, companies often find it necessary to refocus their efforts on improving product quality and operating efficiency. And such changes in business strategy tend to require a revamping of the three critical components of organizational architecture: (1) assignment of decision rights, (2) performance evaluation systems, and (3) compensation systems. As the authors argue, innovations such as TQM, outsourcing, Re‐engineering, and JIT typically involve major changes in just one or two of these critical elements of the organization, but not all three. The failure to coordinate organizational changes in such a way that these three elements are mutually consistent and reinforcing is one important reason why management innovations can fail to meet expectations. The framework described in this article is designed to help managers considering one potentially valuable set of organizational changes to identify other facets of the organization that also require attention and perhaps complementary adjustments.

This article explores the application of principles from structural mechanics to optimize business strategies, foster resilience, and navigate the complexities of the contemporary corporate environment. The structural mechanics lens involves viewing organizations as dynamic structures, where equilibrium, resilience, and efficiency become focal points. Through this lens, strategic decision-making is guided by achieving a harmonious equilibrium, organizational resilience is fortified akin to structural integrity, and operational efficiency is inspired by the mechanics of workflow optimization. Strategic alignment and cross-functional collaboration are emphasized to build cohesive business structures, while educational evolution aims to nurture structural thinkers. The conclusion highlights the importance of applying structural wisdom to build stable and adaptable business foundations in a rapidly changing business landscape.
