Abstract:Dietary behaviour is determined by community, family and individual factors, including availability and costs of foods. Preference for sweetness starts early in life and remains throughout childhood, and starts declining to adult levels only during mid-adolescence. This explains why children are at high risk of sugar overconsumption. The empty calories of added sugar hinder the proper growth and development, due to the lack of nutrients. The relationship between added sugar consumption and possibile negative health consequences is controversial. For added sugars we mean all those sugars added to food or drinks, or present naturally in unsweetened fruit juices, honey or syrups. It does not include natural sugar found in vegetables, fruits and milk. Some investigators claim that excessive sugar consumption is associated with increased risk of caries [Paglia et al., 2016], obesity [Costacurta et al., 2014], cardiovascular disease (CVD) [Vos et al., 2017], type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In addition, obesity is the primary risk factor for the development of SDB (sleep-disordered breathing). Inadeguate sleep duration and quality in children and adolescents is associated with an increase in body weight and adiposity, decreased insulin sensitivity, hyperglycemia, and prevalent cardiometabolic risk factors. Finally, the interest in attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during childhood has recently increased. Some researchers are looking for a link between high sugar consumption over a long period and ADHD [Del-Ponte et al., 2019]. These statements have influenced organisations such as the American Hearth Association (AHA), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO), who recommend to limit free sugars intake to less than 10% of the total energy intake for adults and children, observing that a further reduction of 5% would provide additional health benefits [WHO, 2015]. The first few months of life are crucial for the flavour learning process in humans. Early experience with different tastes is very important for later acceptance of foods, especially the healthy ones. Clinicians and parents can and should support in synergy the healthy development of children's taste preference and eating behaviour.
Consumption of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages before 2 Years of Age and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Abstract:Introduction: This study examined the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption before the first 24 months of life and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Methods: A population administrative cohort study was conducted in Korea (2008-2019) using linked national insurance data and a health screening survey. The cohort included 25,305 children in the exposed group with high sugar-sweetened beverage drinks (≥200 mL) and 339,931 in the reference groups (<200 mL) at 24 months of age. The primary outcome was the development of ADHD based on the International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes. Cox proportional model was used to identify the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption during early childhood and the later development of ADHD while controlling for multiple risk factors. Results: Over a mean follow-up period of 9.2 years, the incidence rates of ADHD were 29.6 and 23.8 per 10,000 person-years in the exposed and reference groups, respectively. Compared with the reference group, children consuming high-sugar drinks were at an increased risk of ADHD (adjusted hazard ratio 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.08-1.27). These associations remained significant even after applying alternative ADHD definitions or adjusting for confounding variables. Conclusion: Children who consume sweetened beverages during early childhood are at increased risk of developing ADHD later in life.
Substituting sugar-sweetened beverages with water or milk is inversely associated with body fatness development from childhood to adolescence

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the association between different types of beverage intake and substitution of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) by water, milk, or 100% fruit juice in relation to 6-y change in body fatness.METHODS: A cohort of 9-y-old children (N = 358) who participated in the Danish part of the European Youth Heart Study was followed for development of body fatness over 6 y. Multivariate linear regression was used to examine the associations between beverage intake at baseline and change in body fatness (body mass index z score [BMIz]), waist circumference (WC), and sum of four skinfolds (Σ4SF) over 6 y with adjustment for potential confounders. Substitution models were used to evaluate various beverages as alternatives to SSBs.RESULTS: SSB intake at age 9 y, but not intake of other beverages, was directly associated with subsequent 6-y changes in BMIz (β = 0.05; P = 0.02) and Σ4SF (β = 0.86; P = 0.02). Daily substitution of 100 g water for 100 g SSB was inversely associated with changes in BMIz (β = -0.04; P = 0.02), WC (β =-0.29; P = 0.04), and Σ4SF (β = -0.91; P = 0.02) over 6 y. Daily substitution of 100 g milk for 100 g SSB was also inversely associated with changes in BMIz (β = -0.05; P = 0.02), WC (β = -0.33; P = 0.046), and Σ4SF (β = -0.79; P = 0.06). No effect was observed for substitution of SSB by 100% fruit juice.CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that SSB intake is associated with long-term changes in body fatness in children, and replacing SSBs with water or milk, but not 100% fruit juice, is inversely associated with body fatness development.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate sex-specific associations of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs), 100% fruit juices, and whole fruit intake throughout childhood and adolescence with insulin resistance and glycemic outcomes in late adolescence. Methods: We used data from Project Viva, an ongoing pre-birth cohort from eastern Massachusetts. We evaluated intake of SSBs, 100% fruit juices, and whole fruit at early childhood (median age: 3.1 yrs), mid-childhood (7.6 yrs) and early teen research visits (12.9 yrs) using food frequency questionnaires. We measured fasting blood glucose, insulin and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in late adolescence (17.4 yrs). We estimated insulin resistance with the homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). We computed sex-specific linear regression models to estimate associations of average consumption of SSBs, fruit juice and whole fruit across the 3 childhood-early teen visits with late adolescence HOMA-IR, fasting glucose and HbA1c adjusting for demographics, socioeconomic status, mother BMI, child BMI z-score, and parental history of type 2 diabetes in early childhood (model 1), and additionally for lifestyle habits and diet quality in early childhood (model 2). Results: A total of 240 girls and 215 boys met eligibility criteria and had an outcome measure in late adolescence. Greater SSB intake throughout childhood and adolescence was associated with higher HOMA-IR, fasting glucose, and HbA1c in boys only (Figure). Also in boys, greater fruit juice intake was associated with higher HbA1c in late adolescence. Effect estimates in girls were of small magnitude and centered to the null, except for fruit juice and HbA1c with associations in the same direction as boys (Figure). We did not observe any association with respect to whole fruits for either sex. Conclusion: Findings suggest that SSBs and fruit juice consumption throughout childhood and adolescence are associated with less favorable glycemic traits in boys, suggesting greater risk of developing diabetes.

Abstract:Background/Aims: This study sought to examine the associations of the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and of added sugars with total and abdominal obesity in American adults aged 20-39 years who participated in the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in the U.S. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study based on a sample of 947 adults (aged 20-39 years): 424 non-Hispanic whites, 222 non-Hispanic blacks, and 301 Mexican-Americans. Obesity was defined as a body mass index >= 30 and abdominal obesity as a waist circumference >102 cm in men or >88 cm in women. The use of sweetened beverages and added sugars was stratified into quartiles of intake. Odds ratios (ORs) for total and abdominal obesity were estimated with logistic regression models. Results: Compared to the lowest intake quartile of sweetened beverages, those with the highest intake had a higher intake of energy, added sugars, and carbohydrates, as well as a lower intake of fiber, orange juice, and low-fat milk. A greater intake of sweetened beverages was associated with a higher risk of total and abdominal obesity (p(trend) <0.02 for both). The adjusted ORs comparing 2 extreme quartiles of sweetened beverages were 2.1 (95% CI 1.2-3.7) for total obesity and 2.0 (95% CI 1.1-3.6) for abdominal obesity. Conclusions: An increased consumption of sweetened beverages was associated with total and abdominal obesity in US adults aged 20-39 years. Further investigation of the potential role of sweetened beverages and other dietary components, and of the mechanisms by which these intakes contribute to weight gain, is needed to accelerate our efforts to halt or somewhat alleviate the current obesity epidemic facing the American population. Trajectories of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake in Early Life: Evidence from a Birth Cohort Study

Abstract:Infancy and early childhood are periods of dietary transition. Early exposure to specific foods and the establishment of dietary habits during this period can shape long-term food preferences and have lasting effects on health. This study aimed to examine the longitudinal trajectories of sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) intake in Australian children from birth to age 3 years and identify early-life and socioeconomic factors influencing those trajectories. Mother–infant dyads (n = 934) from the Healthy Smiles Healthy Kids birth cohort study were interviewed on their weekly frequency of SSB intake at 4-month, 8-month, 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year age points. Group-based trajectory modelling analysis was performed to identify trajectories for SSB intake among Australian children. A multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify the maternal and child-related predictors of resulting trajectories. The intake of SSBs showed two distinct quadratic trajectories (high and low) with age. While the two trajectories remained distinctive throughout, the SSB consumption for both groups consistently increased between 4 months and 2 years of age and subsequently stabilised. Compared to low SSB consumers (75%), the high SSB consumers (25%) were significantly more likely to be living in households with three or more children (relative risk (RR): 1.59, 95%CI: 1.02–2.48), had low maternal education (left school < year 12—RR: 1.75, 95%CI: 1.09–2.81; completed year 12—RR: 1.57, 95%CI: 1.02–2.81), and resided in highly/the most socioeconomically disadvantaged areas (highly disadvantaged—RR: 1.89, 95%CI: 1.13–3.18; most disadvantaged—RR: 2.06, 95%CI: 1.25–3.38). Children's SSB intake patterns are established early in life as they transition from infancy to preschool age, and the trajectories of intake established during early childhood are strongly influenced by socioeconomic factors. Hence, interventions targeted to limit SSB intake and improve nutrition amongst children should occur in early life.

Abstract:Background: Although repetitive exposure to stressful situations is thought to habituate the physical stress responses, work stress is experienced by medical personnel in emergency and intensive care units; performance should, however, remain stable over time. Aims: To investigate the neuroendocrine reactions (reactivity during and recovery after work) in experienced emergency caregivers during emergency situations. Methods: A within subjects pre-post design was studied in the natural work environment of 20 municipal Dutch emergency caregivers. A stress protocol was developed in which the biomarker cortisol was measured in saliva at baseline, during the emergency period, and during recovery. Four scenarios were tested between subjects in which the severity of the emergency situation and the time of day were taken into account. Results: Greater endocrine reactions were shown during and after the handling of patients in direct life threatening situations during morning hours compared to the handling of patients who were not in direct life threatening situations.

Abstract:Background The intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) has been linked to an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Objectives This study aims to examine associations between SSB intake and cardiometabolic risks among Chinese children and adolescences. Methods Data from 3958 participants aged 6-17 years old were obtained in Shanghai, China, from September to October 2015. A 3-day dietary record and a food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) were applied to assess SSB consumption and frequency. Anthropometric and laboratory measurements were conducted to measure cardiometabolic indicators. Results After adjusting for age, sex, daily energy intake, pubertal stage, sedentary time, maternal education, and household income, SSB consumption was positively associated with serum total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), while it was inversely associated with systolic blood pressure (P < .05). The participants in the highest intake category (>= 201.7 mL/day) of SSB consumption had 0.10 (95%CI, 0.02-0.18) mmol/L higher total cholesterol and 0.09 (95%CI, 0.03-0.16) mmol/L higher LDL-C levels than the nonconsumption group (0 mL/day). There was a quasi-U-shaped trend in LDL-C across the categories of >0 mL/day SSB consumption. SSB frequency was positively associated with BMI (P = .04). Conclusions SSB intake was positively associated with serum cholesterol and was weakly associated with BMI in Chinese children and adolescents, independent of energy intake.

Abstract:Background: We examined the effect of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) and common drink intake on pubertal development in both sexes. Methods: Data were retrieved from Taiwan Children Health Study, which involved detailed pubertal stage assessments of 2,819 schoolchildren aged 11 years in 2011–2012. Drawings of secondary sexual characteristics and self-reported age at menarche or voice breaking were used to assess pubertal stages. Dietary intake was assessed using a detailed semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Generalized estimating equation modeling was applied to obtain odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to represent the effects of each drink on early pubertal development outcomes. Results: In boys, an one cup/day increment of a SSB was associated with earlier voice breaking (β = −0.12; 95% CI = −0.20, −0.04), whereas consuming yogurt (≥2 cups/day) was a protective factor against early puberty (OR = 0.78; 95% CI = 0.73, 0.83). In girls, SSB consumption was associated with increased risk of early puberty in a dose–response manner, and a similar protective effect of yogurt consumption and fermented probiotic drink (≥2 cups/day) against early puberty was observed (OR = 0.96; 95% CI = 0.94, 0.99). Furthermore, the intake of both total sugar and added sugar within SSBs increased risk of early puberty in girls but not in boys. Conclusions: Sugar-sweetened beverages were associated with early puberty, and probiotic drinks appeared to mitigate this link. These findings indicate that the gut–brain axis could play a crucial role in sexual maturation.

Associations between exposure to advertising of foods high in fats, salt and sugar and purchase of energy and nutrients: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Objective: To assess associations between self-reported advertising exposure to foods high in fats, salt and sugar and household purchases of energy, nutrients and specific product categories. Design: A cross-sectional design was used. Advertising exposure data were gathered using a questionnaire administered to the main shopper of each household, and purchase data from supermarkets and other stores for these households were accessed for a 4-week period during February 2019. Setting: Households in London and the North of England. Participants: Representative households (N 1289) from the Kantar Fast Moving Consumer Goods Panel. Main shoppers were predominantly female (71 %), with a mean age of 54 years (±13). Results: Linear regression models identified that exposure to foods high in fats, salt and sugar advertising through traditional mediums (including broadcast and print), but not digital, transport, recreational or functional mediums, was associated with greater purchases of energy (9779 kcal; 95 % CI 3515, 16 043), protein (416 g; 95 % CI 161, 671), carbohydrate (1164 g; 95 % CI 368, 1886) and sugar (514 g; 95 % CI 187, 841). Generalised linear models showed that individuals who reported exposure to sugary drink advertising were more likely to purchase sugary drinks (1·16; 95 % CI 2·94, 4·99) but did not purchase more energy or nutrients from sugary drinks. There was no evidence of associations between exposure to advertising for sugary cereals or sweet snacks and purchases from these categories. Conclusions: There was a strong influence of traditional advertising and sugar-sweetened beverage advertising on household food and drink purchases, thus supporting the need for advertising restrictions across traditional formats and for sugary drinks specifically.

Abstract:ObjectiveTo fully understand the sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption status among Chinese young children and to explore its association with weight gain.DesignIn this cross-sectional study, data on sociodemographic characteristics, SSB intake and weight/height were collected by means of face-to-face interviews. The intake of SSB among young Chinese children in relation to their age, different characteristics and types of SSB consumed is described, and the association between SSB intake and BMI-for-age Z-score and overweight is explored.SettingSeven large cities and two villages in China.SubjectsNine hundred and forty-six healthy children, aged 3-7 years.ResultsThe proportion of SSB intake among Chinese young children was 805 %; 34 % were daily consumers, 340 % (314 %) consumed at least once per week (month). The per capita and per consumer SSB intake was 631 9 (sd 1008) and 784 (sd 1069) ml/d. Children from rural areas consumed twice, or even triple, the amount of SSB as those from urban areas (P<0001) and great disparities existed between the types of SSB consumed by urban and rural children. An association was found between increased SSB intake and higher BMI-for-age Z-score (P<005) after adjusting for potential confounders; there was also an association between SSB intake and increased risk of being overweight or obese.ConclusionsThe consumption status of SSB in Chinese young children is of concern. There was a positive association between SSB intake and weight gain. Measures should be taken to improve the present situation of SSB consumption among Chinese young children.

Abstract:Human desire for sweet taste spans all ages, races, and cultures. Throughout evolution, sweetness has had a role in human nutrition, helping to orient feeding behavior toward foods providing both energy and essential nutrients. Infants and young children in particular base many of their food choices on familiarity and sweet taste. The low cost and ready availability of energy-containing sweeteners in the food supply has led to concerns that the rising consumption of added sugars is the driving force behind the obesity epidemic. Low-calorie sweeteners are one option for maintaining sweet taste while reducing the energy content of children's diets. However, their use has led to further concerns that dissociating sweetness from energy may disrupt the balance between taste response, appetite, and consumption patterns, especially during development. Further studies, preferably based on longitudinal cohorts, are needed to clarify the developmental trajectory of taste responses to low-calorie sweeteners and their potential impact on the diet quality of children and youth.

Home Sweet Home: Parent and Home Environmental Factors in Adolescent Consumption of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages

Abstract:Objective: Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) are key contributors to obesity among youth. We investigated associations among parental and home-related factors (parental attitudes and consumption; home availability) regarding 3 types of SSBs-soda, sports drinks, and fruit-flavored drinks-with consumption of each type of SSB in a general school-based sample of adolescents. Methods: Data were collected across 3 school semesters, from 2009 to 2011. A total of 1313 seventh grade student-parent dyads participated. Students completed in-class surveys across 9 schools in a large Los Angeles school district; their parents completed telephone interviews. Youth were asked about their SSB consumption (soda, sports drinks, and fruit-flavored drinks), and parents were asked about their attitudes, consumption, and home availability of SSBs. Results: We estimated expected rates of youth SSB consumption for hypothetical parents at very low (5th) and very high (95th) percentiles for home/parental risk factors (ie, they consumed little, had negative attitudes, and did not keep SSBs in the home; or they consumed a lot, had positive attitudes, and did keep SSBs in the home). Youth of lower-risk parents (at the 5th percentile) were estimated to drink substantially less of each type of beverage than did youth of higher-risk parents (at the 95th percentile). For example, youth with higher-risk parents averaged nearly double the SSB consumption of youth of lower-risk parents (2.77 vs 1.37 glasses on the previous day; overall model significance F22,1312 = 3.91, P < .001). Conclusions: Results suggest a need to focus on parental and home environmental factors when intervening to reduce youths' SSB consumption.

Abstract:Background/Aims: High intakes of free sugars may have negative effects on health perhaps associated with their effect on nutrient and food group intakes. The primary aim of the study was to compare nutrient and food group intakes between children with habitual high or low intakes of free sugars to identify which foods could be targeted to improve the diets of children consuming excess free sugars. The secondary aim was to assess antecedents for a child being in the high free sugars group compared with the low to identify the age at which an intervention would be most effective. Methods: The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children collected 3-day food records from children at ages 7, 10, and 13 years. Increments of 5% of energy from free sugars (%E-FS) were calculated. Two groups of children were identified: those consuming ≤15%E-FS each time (Low-FS) and those consuming >20%E-FS each time (High-FS). Their mean daily nutrient and food group intakes were compared at each age using ANOVA. Antecedents of being in these two FS groups were tested using regression models. Results: At each age, 70% of children consumed >15%E-FS with one-third >20%E-FS. Data were available for 4723 children at all three ages, and the diets of the 456 children with Low-FS intakes were compared with 330 children with High-FS intakes at each age. Energy intakes were higher in High-FS than Low-FS at each age, but protein, fat, starch, and fibre intakes were lower. Several micronutrient intakes (e.g., calcium, zinc, selenium, and retinol) were also lower. The High-FS group ate more confectionery and other sweet foods than the Low-FS group as well as six times more sugar-sweetened soft drinks (SSSD) and four times more fruit juice. However, the High-FS group consumed less bread, fat spreads, milk, and vegetables than the Low-FS group. Being in the High-FS group compared with Low-FS group was not associated with maternal education, age, or breastfeeding duration. It was more likely if the child was difficult to feed at 15 months or a picky eater in preschool years and if a dietary pattern low in nutrient-dense core foods and high in nutrient-poor discretionary foods was being consumed at 2 and/or 3 years of age. Conclusions: Children who habitually ate a High-FS diet in mid-late childhood consumed larger amounts of SSSD and fruit juice and less of some core foods than Low-FS consumers. This type of dietary pattern was already evident at 2 years of age and was associated with being a picky eater. To reduce children's intake of free sugars, support for parents to introduce a healthy balanced diet should be provided in the first 2 years of a child's life.

Abstract:Abstract <sec> Objectives Sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) have been increasingly linked to the obesity epidemic, however, the evidence on 100% fruit juice and body weight remains controversial. The objective of this research was to synthesize the available evidence on SSBs and 100% fruit juice on body weight in children and adults. </sec> <sec> Methods MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane were searched through October 11th, 2020 for prospective cohort studies (≥ 6 months) and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (≥ 2 weeks) assessing the effect of SSBs and 100% fruit juice on BMI and body weight in children and adults. Eligible trials assessed SSBs or 100% fruit juice added to the diet in adults, and reduced from the diet in children against a non-caloric control. Data were pooled using random effects models and presented as b coefficients with 95% CIs for cohort studies and mean differences (MD)s with 95% CIs for RCTs. Results are reported in compliance with the PRISMA guidelines, and the protocol was registered on PROSPERO (ID: CRD42020209915). </sec> <sec> Results Sixty-two articles were identified for SSBs: 40 in children (33 cohorts, 7 RCTs) and 22 in adults (14 cohorts, 8 RCTs), and 22 articles were identified for 100% fruit juice: 13 in children (13 cohorts, 0 RCTs), and 9 studies in adults (3 cohorts, 6 RCTs). Among cohort studies, each serving/day increase in SSB was associated with an increase in BMI in children and body weight in adults (0.06 kg/m2; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.10 and 0.47 kg; 95% CI: 0.24, 0.69, respectively). For 100% fruit juice, each serving/day increase was associated with an increase in body weight in adults (0.19 kg; 95% CI: 0.04, 0.34) while no association was found for children (0.02 kg/m2; 95% CI: −0.01, 0.05). RCTs in children indicated a reduction in BMI gain when SSB consumption was reduced (MD = −0.21 kg/m2; 95% CI: −0.42, 0.00). RCTs in adults indicated an increase in body weight when SSBs were added to the diet (MD = 0.76 kg; 95% CI: 0.51, 1.0), however no effect on weight was found for the addition of 100% fruit juice (MD = 0.08 kg; 95% CI: −0.79, 0.96). </sec> <sec> Conclusions SSB consumption promotes weight gain in both children and adults. Evidence from cohort studies indicate a positive association between 100% fruit juice and weight gain in adults and a marginal association among children. Findings from RCTs on 100% fruit juice in adults showed no effect, and there is a need for trials among children. </sec> <sec> Funding Sources None. </sec>

Abstract:Summary Background The relationship between sugar‐free beverage (SFB) intake and childhood obesity among Chinese children is unknown. Objectives To describe the status of SFB consumption among children and adolescents in China and assess the association between SFB intake and different types of obesity. Methods The study was based on the baseline data of an ongoing cohort project named Evaluation and Monitoring on School‐based Nutrition and Growth in Shenzhen (EMSNGS). Food frequency questionnaires were used to collect information on SFB consumption in 3227 students aged 9–17. Physical and clinical examinations were conducted by trained investigators and clinicians. Multivariable binary logistic regression models were performed to assess the association between SFB intake and general obesity, overweight/obesity, abdominal obesity, metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW)/metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Results The median age of the participants was 13.28 years. Among the participants, 55.2% were boys, and 66.1% were adolescents. The median SFB consumption was 16.67 mL/d. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, each 100 mL increase in daily SFB intake was associated with an increased risk of overweight/obesity (OR = 1.14; 95%CI: 1.06–1.23), abdominal obesity (OR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.03–1.23), and MUOW/MUO (OR = 1.12; 95%CI: 1.02–1.21), respectively. Stratified analyses showed that family income may have an impact on the association between SFB intake and overweight/obesity (P for interaction = 0.021) and abdominal obesity (P for interaction = 0.031). Conclusion SFB intake was positively associated with childhood obesity in Chinese children, particularly among individuals with high‐income families.

Abstract:The thermal stability of sintered NdFeB magnets can be described by the temperature coefficient of remanent flux density α only on condition that demagnetization due to rising temperature or field and oxidation of the magnets are totally avoided. This also requires the control of time-dependent demagnetization at elevated temperatures. We have studied the time-dependent polarization losses in sintered NdFeB magnets with different coercivities by determining temperature T0 for each magnet (Pc=1.1). T0 is the maximum temperature at which the total polarization loss even after 30 years of exposure is estimated to be less than 2%. Temperature T0 for four magnets produced from different materials are presented in this work. Flux losses at temperatures higher than T0 after different exposure times are also described. The estimated flux loss after 30 years is found to be roughly twice the loss after 1 h, except in the vicinity of T0. At temperature T0+10°C , it could be as high as four times the loss after 1 h.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To test the associations of sugar-sweetened beverage, artificially sweetened beverage, and pure fruit/vegetable juice consumption with visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass at baseline and follow-up and to determine whether BMI and genetic risk of VAT mass modified the associations. METHODS:A total of 203,348 participants from UK Biobank with consumption data on three beverages were included. Participants were categorized into nonconsumers and consumers with >0-1, >1-2 and >2 L/week. A sex-specific prediction model was used to calculate VAT mass. A weighted genetic risk score for high VAT mass was calculated. RESULTS:The participants with a sugar-sweetened beverage and artificially sweetened beverage consumption of >2 L/week had the greatest B values [B (95% CI): 24.02 (16.53, 31.51) and 60.81 (52.08, 69.54) in men, respectively; 10.20 (5.92, 14.48) and 24.72 (20.80, 28.64) in women]. Low and moderate intake of pure fruit/vegetable juices showed a significantly inverse association with VAT mass in men [-10.52 (-15.37, -5.67); -6.46 (-11.27, -1.65)] and women [-6.70 (-8.99, -4.41); -5.93 (-8.33, -3.54)]. Regarding changes in VAT mass, participants who consumed >2 L/week of sugar-sweetened beverages and artificially sweetened beverages had greater changes. BMI but not genetic risk modified the associations between beverage intake and VAT mass, which were strengthened in participants with BMI ≥25 kg/m2 for sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverage consumption. CONCLUSIONS:Higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages or artificially sweetened beverages was associated with greater VAT mass regardless of genetic risk. Mild-to-moderate intake of pure fruit/vegetable juices was linked to lower VAT mass.
