Abstract:The topological properties of coverings and their corresponding covering approximation operators have drawn special attention because these topological properties have important applications in rough sets. In this paper, we present some topological characterizations for three covering approximation operators. In the first part, we present certain topological characterizations for the covering lower approximation operator in an infinite universe, while the topological characterizations for the first and the second types of covering upper approximation operators are studied in a finite universe. In the second part, the relationships among three operators and the relationships among three topological spaces are established. In a word, topology theory provides useful tools to study covering-based rough sets.
Topological equivalence in the infinity of a planar vector field and its principal part defined through Newton polytope

Abstract:Given a planar polynomial vector field $X$ with a fixed Newton polytope $\mathcal{P}$, we prove (under some non degeneracy conditions) that the monomials associated to the upper boundary of $\mathcal{P}$ determine (under topological equivalence) the phase portrait of $X$ in a neighbourhood of boundary of the Poincaré--Lyapunov disk. This result can be seen as a version of the well known result of Berezovskaya, Brunella and Miari for the dynamics at the infinity, We also discuss the effect of the Poincaré--Lyapunov compactification on the Newton polytope.

Abstract:We prove that the strong convexity supporting condition is typical for an arbitrary convex compact set in . It is shown that, in a certain sense for almost all points, the metric projection onto a convex compact set satisfies the Lipschitz condition with Lipschitz constant strictly less than 1. This condition characterizes the strong convexity supporting condition. The linear convergence of the alternating projection method for a convex compact set with the strong convexity supporting condition and for a proximally smooth set is proved under a certain relation between the constant in the strong convexity supporting condition and the proximal smoothness constant.

Abstract:Given an Euclidean space, this paper elucidates the topological link between the partial derivatives of the Minkowski functional associated to a set (assumed to be compact, convex, with a differentiable boundary and a non-empty interior) and the boundary of its orthogonal projection onto the linear subspaces of the Euclidean space. A system of equations for these orthogonal projections is derived from this topological link. This result is illustrated by the projection of the unit ball of norm $4$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$ on a plane.

Abstract:For a Hausdorff space $Y$, a topological space $X$ and a map $g:X\to Y$, we present a connection between the relative sectional number of the first coordinate projection $\pi_{2,1}^Y:F(Y,2)\to Y$ with respect to $g$, and the coincidence property (CP) for $(X,Y;g)$, where $(X,Y;g)$ has the coincidence property (CP) if, for every map $f:X\to Y$, there is a point $x$ of $X$ such that $f(x)=g(x)$. Explicitly, we demonstrate that $(X,Y;g)$ has the CP if and only if 2 is the minimal cardinality of open covers $\{U_i\}$ of $X$ such that each $U_i$ admits a local lifting for $g$ with respect to $\pi_{2,1}^Y$. This characterisation connects a standard problem in coincidence theory to current research trends in sectional category and topological robotics. Motivated by this connection, we introduce the notion of relative topological complexity of a map.

Abstract:In this paper we describe projective curves and surfaces such that almost all their hyperplane sections are projectively equivalent. Our description is complete for curves and close to being complete for smooth surfaces. In the appendix we make some remarks on connections between the mentioned property of a projective variety and its adjunction properties.

Abstract:Let $A$ and $B$ be compact operators over a topological space $X$ and suppose that these operators are normal and have same distinct eigenvalues at each point. By obstruction theory, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for $A$ and $B$ to be strongly unitarily equivalent. When $X=S^1$, we also give a sufficient condition for $A$ and $B$ to be approximately unitarily equivalent with some assumption on their eigenvalues.

Abstract:We prove a conjecture of Toponogov on complete convex planes, namely that such planes must contain an umbilic point, albeit at infinity. Our proof is indirect. It uses Fredholm regularity of an associated Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problem and an existence result for holomorphic discs with Lagrangian boundary conditions, both of which apply to a putative counterexample. Corollaries of the main theorem include a Hawking-Penrose singularity-type theorem, as well as the proof of a conjecture of Milnor's from 1965 in the convex case.

Abstract:For classes of topological vector spaces, we analyze under which conditions open-mapping, continuous-inverse, and closed-graph properties are equivalent. Here, closure under quotients with closed subspaces and closure under closed graphs are sufficient. We show that the class of barreled Ptak spaces is exactly the largest class of locally-convex topological vector spaces, which contains all Banach spaces, is closed under quotients with closed subspaces, is closed under closed graphs, is closed under continuous images, and for which an open-mapping theorem, a continuous-inverse theorem, and a closed-graph theorem holds. An analogous, weaker result also holds for the strictly larger class of barreled infra-Ptak spaces.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce congruence spaces, which are topological spaces that are canonically attached to monoid schemes and that reflect closed topological properties. This leads to satisfactory topological characterizations of closed morphisms and closed immersions as well as separated and proper morphisms. We study congruence spaces thoroughly and extend standard results from usual scheme theory to monoid schemes: a closed immersion is the same as an affine morphism for which the pullback of sections is surjective; a morphism is separated if and only if the image of the diagonal is a closed subset of the congruence space; a valuative criterion for separated and proper morphisms.

Abstract:Generic smooth plane-to-plane map germs are topologically equivalent to cones of mappings of the circle. We carry out a complete topological classification of smooth stable mappings of the circle and show how this classification leads, via the result mentioned above, to a topological classification of finitely determined real analytic plane-to-plane map germs.

Abstract:We consider the set of pairs of orthogonal vectors in Hilbert space, which is also called the cross because it is the union of the horizontal and vertical axes in the Euclidean plane when the underlying space is the real line. Crosses, which are nonconvex sets, play a significant role in various branches of nonsmooth analysis such as feasibility problems and optimization problems. In this work, we study crosses and show that in infinite-dimensional settings, they are never weakly (sequentially) closed. Nonetheless, crosses do turn out to be proximinal (i.e., they always admit projections) and we provide explicit formulas for the projection onto the cross in all cases.
