Abstract:We present a derivation of a stochastic model of Navier Stokes equations that relies on a decomposition of the velocity fields into a differentiable drift component and a time uncorrelated uncertainty random term. This type of decomposition is reminiscent in spirit to the classical Reynolds decomposition. However, the random velocity fluctuations considered here are not differentiable with respect to time, and they must be handled through stochastic calculus. The dynamics associated with the differentiable drift component is derived from a stochastic version of the Reynolds transport theorem. It includes in its general form an uncertainty dependent subgrid bulk formula that cannot be immediately related to the usual Boussinesq eddy viscosity assumption constructed from thermal molecular agitation analogy. This formulation, emerging from uncertainties on the fluid parcels location, explains with another viewpoint some subgrid eddy diffusion models currently used in computational fluid dynamics or in geophysical sciences and paves the way for new large-scales flow modeling. We finally describe an applications of our formalism to the derivation of stochastic versions of the Shallow water equations or to the definition of reduced order dynamical systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we continue the discussion as done in <cit.> on turbulent channel flow described by the Navier-Stokes model and the Navier-Stokes-alpha model. We study the non-stationary solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes-α model having particular function forms. In particular, the term of sum of pressure and potential can be shown to be harmonic in the space variable.

Abstract: In a series of papers (see \cite{CDT02} and the pertinent references therein) the 3D Navier-Stokes-$\alpha$ model were shown to be a useful complement to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations; and in particular, to be a good Reynolds version of the latter equations. In this work, we introduce a simple Reynolds averaging which, due to the wall roughness, transforms the Navier-Stokes equations into the Navier-Stokes-$\alpha$ model.

On the Stochastic Least Action Principle for the Navier-Stokes Equation

Abstract:In this paper we extend the class of stochastic processes allowed to represent solutions of the Navier-Stokes equation on the two dimensional torus to certain non-Markovian processes which we call admissible. More precisely, using the variations of Ref. [3], we provide a criterion for the associated mean velocity field to solve this equation. Due to the fluctuations of the shift a new term of pressure appears which is of purely stochastic origin. We provide an alternative formulation of this least action principle by means of transformations of measure. Within this approach the action is a function of the law of the processes, while the variations are induced by some translations on the space of the divergence free vector fields. Due to the renormalization in the definition of the cylindrical Brownian motion, our action is only related to the relative entropy by an inequality. However we show that, if we cut the high frequency modes, this new approach provides a least action principle for the Navier-Stokes equation based on the relative entropy.

Abstract:We prove the existence and uniqueness of global, probabilistically strong, analytically strong solutions of the 2D Stochastic Navier-Stokes Equation under Navier boundary conditions. The choice of noise includes a large class of additive, multiplicative and transport models. We emphasise that with a transport type noise, the Navier boundary conditions enable direct energy estimates which appear to be prohibited for the usual no-slip condition. The importance of the Stochastic Advection by Lie Transport (SALT) structure, in comparison to a purely transport Stratonovich noise, is also highlighted in these estimates. In the particular cases of SALT noise, the free boundary condition and a domain of non-negative curvature, the inviscid limit exists and is a global, probabilistically weak, analytically weak solution of the corresponding Stochastic Euler Equation.

Abstract:Two cases of transient hypertrichosis of the upper extremity in young females associated with closed fractures are presented in support of the concept of the "regional acceleratory phenomenon" as proposed by Frost wherein trauma evokes increased regional blood flow and increased metabolism on the part of all local soft tissues. This abnormality which was of much concern in terms of cosmesis resolved over approximately six months.

Abstract:We study the asymtotic behavior of solutions to the two-dimensional stochasitc Navier-Stokes (SNS) equation in the small viscosity limit. The SNS equation is supplemented with no-slip boundary condition, in which a strong boundary layer shall appear in the limit due to the mismatch of the boundary conditions of the SNS equation and the corresponding limit problem. Several equivalent dissipation conditions are derived to ensure the convergence hold in the energy space. One novelty of this work is that we do not assume any smallness for the noise.

Abstract:Röckner and Zhang (Probab Theory Relat Fields 145, 211–267, 2009) proved the existence of a unique strong solution to a stochastic tamed 3D Navier–Stokes equation in the whole space and for the periodic boundary case using a result from Stroock and Varadhan (Multidimensional diffusion processes, Springer, Berlin, 1979). In the latter case, they also proved the existence of an invariant measure. In this paper, we improve their results (but for a slightly simplified system) using a self-contained approach. In particular, we generalise their result about an estimate on the L4-norm of the solution from the torus to R3, see Lemma 5.1 and thus establish the existence of an invariant measure on R3 for a time-homogeneous damped tamed 3D Navier–Stokes equation, given by (6.1). Abstract:Poincare's invariance principle for Hamiltonian flows implies Kelvin's principle for solution to Incompressible Euler Equation. Iyer-Constantin Circulation Theorem offers a stochastic analog of Kelvin's principle for Navier-Stokes Equation. Weakly symplectic diffusions are defined to produce stochastically symplectic flows in a systematic way. With the aid of symplectic diffusions, we produce a family of martigales associated with solutions to Navier-Stokes Equation that in turn can be used to prove Iyer-Constantin Circulation Theorem. We also review some basic facts in symplectic and contact geometry and their applications to Euler Equation.

Abstract:We investigate a stochastic version of the Allen–Cahn–Navier–Stokes system in a smooth two- or three-dimensional domain with random initial data. The system consists of a Navier–Stokes equation coupled with a convective Allen–Cahn equation, with two independent sources of randomness given by general multiplicative-type Wiener noises. In particular, the Allen–Cahn equation is characterized by a singular potential of logarithmic type as prescribed by the classical thermodynamical derivation of the model. The problem is endowed with a no-slip boundary condition for the (volume averaged) velocity field, as well as a homogeneous Neumann condition for the order parameter. We first prove the existence of analytically weak martingale solutions in two and three spatial dimensions. Then, in two dimensions, we also establish pathwise uniqueness and the existence of a unique probabilistically-strong solution. Eventually, by exploiting a suitable generalisation of the classical De Rham theorem to stochastic processes, existence and uniqueness of a pressure is also shown.

Abstract:The present article establishes connections between the structure of the deterministic Navier-Stokes equations and the structure of (similarity) equations that govern self-similar solutions as expected values of certain naturally associated stochastic cascades. A principle result is that explosion criteria for the stochastic cascades involved in the probabilistic representations of solutions to the respective equations coincide. While the uniqueness problem itself remains unresolved, these connections provide interesting problems and possible methods for investigating symmetry breaking and the uniqueness problem for Navier-Stokes equations. In particular, new branching Markov chains, including a dilogarithmic branching random walk on the multiplicative group (0, ∞), naturally arise as a result of this investigation.

Abstract:We consider the stationary (time-independent) Navier-Stokes equations in the whole threedimensional space, under the action of a source term and with the fractional Laplacian operator (--$\Delta$) $\alpha$/2 in the diffusion term. In the framework of Lebesgue and Lorentz spaces, we find some natural sufficient conditions on the external force and on the parameter $\alpha$ to prove the existence and in some cases nonexistence of solutions. Secondly, we obtain sharp pointwise decaying rates and asymptotic profiles of solutions, which strongly depend on $\alpha$. Finally, we also prove the global regularity of solutions. As a bi-product, we obtain some uniqueness theorems so-called Liouville-type results. On the other hand, our regularity result yields a new regularity criterion for the classical ( i.e. with $\alpha$ = 2) stationary Navier-Stokes equations. Contents

Abstract:The Landau-Lifshitz Navier-Stokes (LLNS) equations incorporate thermal fluctuations into macroscopic hydrodynamics by using stochastic fluxes. This paper examines explicit Eulerian discretizations of the full LLNS equations. Several CFD approaches are considered (including MacCormack's two-step Lax-Wendroff scheme and the Piecewise Parabolic Method) and are found to give good results (about 10% error) for the variances of momentum and energy fluctuations. However, neither of these schemes accurately reproduces the density fluctuations. We introduce a conservative centered scheme with a third-order Runge-Kutta temporal integrator that does accurately produce density fluctuations. A variety of numerical tests, including the random walk of a standing shock wave, are considered and results from the stochastic LLNS PDE solver are compared with theory, when available, and with molecular simulations using a Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a sufficient condition to guarantee the existence of a smooth solution of the Navier-Stokes Equation with the nice decreasing properties at infinity. In this way, we prove the existence of smooth physically reasonable solutions to the Navier-Stokes problem. Additionally, we show the existence of a smooth curve of entire vector fields of order 2 that extends the solution to the complex domain for positive time.

Abstract:We establish the existence of infinitely many stationary solutions, as well as ergodic stationary solutions, to the three dimensional Navier--Stokes and Euler equations in both deterministic and stochastic settings, driven by additive noise. These solutions belong to the regularity class $C(\mathbb{R};H^{\vartheta})\cap C^{\vartheta}(\mathbb{R};L^{2})$ for some $\vartheta>0$ and satisfy the equations in an analytically weak sense. The solutions to the Euler equations are obtained as vanishing viscosity limits of stationary solutions to the Navier--Stokes equations. Furthermore, regardless of their construction, every stationary solution to the Euler equations within this regularity class, which satisfies a suitable moment bound, is a limit in law of stationary analytically weak solutions to Navier--Stokes equations with vanishing viscosities. Our results are based on a novel stochastic version of the convex integration method, which provides uniform moment bounds locally in the aforementioned function spaces.
